Eamon de Valera served as Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) four times, and as Irish President between 1959 and 1973. The most significant figure in the independent country's century-long history, de Valera was a key figure in securing and moulding Irish independence for six decades. His long public life has led to a popular image of de Valera as austere, pious, and as representing the economic and cultural stagnation that gripped Ireland for much of the 20th century. My guest for this episode is Diarmaid Ferriter, lecturer in Irish history at University College Dublin.

Richie is joined by Niall McEvoy and Ben Gilroy. Niall McEvoy has represented the Irish National Ice Hockey Team for over 13 years. On Friday last, Niall emailed his team mates and his coaches to tender his resignation from the team. In the emotional email, Niall said that he “can no longer represent a country that has approved of the discrimination and segregation between vaccinated people and unvaccinated people.” His email went viral. Niall discusses his resignation and more with Richie.Ben Gilroy is the founder and former leader of Direct Democracy Ireland. For years, he has been a tireless champion of the Irish people. Ben took multiple court actions against Irish banks for wrongful evictions. Last week, the Dáil voted to impose vaccine passports on the Irish hospitality industry. If the Irish President signs the bill into law, people will need to prove that they have been vaccinated against covid, to eat indoors at a restaurant. Ben is leading a campaign to convince the Irish President Michael D. Higgins to reject the bill. Do not miss this show.

Although many consider the Irish Presidency a largely ceremonial role, one significant constitutional power which the President has is the right to refer bills to the Supreme Court to check their constitutionality before they are made law. One such case considered whether a law requiring property developers to sell up to 20% of their new houses to the state for use as social housing. We discussed the merits of this case and the pitfalls of letting the President get involved.

As the Coronavirus hits the Native Americans hard, Irish people have taken the chance to repay a 173-year-old debt. A fundraiser to help the Navajo and Hopi Nations fight one of the worst Covid-19 outbreaks in the United States has taken off in Ireland. Donations have been flooding in, in tribute to an act of kindness during the Great Hunger in Ireland that has never been forgotten. In the worst year of the famine, 1847, the Choctaw people raised what they could and sent it to Ireland as aid. It's not the only example of solidarity between Irish and Native American people throughout history. In this bonus episode made specially to thank our Patreon supporters, Naomi O'Leary traces the history of links between Ireland and Native Americans. Did you know that during the struggle for independence, the Chippewa-Ojibwe people made future Irish President Éamon de Valera an honorary chief? H.E. Mr. Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of the Republic of Cuba and Mrs. Lis Cuesta Peraza undertook an Official Visit to Ireland on 21 October 2019. The visit by President Díaz-Canel Bermúdez came in return to the State Visit to Cuba by President Michael D. Higgins in February 2017, the first State Visit by an Irish President to Latin America. The visit commenced with a formal welcoming ceremony at Áras an Uachtaráin, followed by a meeting between both Heads of State. After the meeting, and in keeping with tradition, President Díaz-Canel Bermúdez was invited to plant a tree in the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin, as a symbol of the friendship between the two countries. President and Mrs. Higgins hosted a luncheon at Áras an Uachtaráin in honour of the visit by President Bermúdez.
This week's guest is Mary Robinson (never to be called Mrs. Robinson), a lawyer and diplomat who served as the 7th President of Ireland. Kevin and Mary talk about how her early life as the only girl of four siblings ignited her desire for gender equality and how in her own words ‘she learned how to use her elbows'. A former High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary talks in a refreshingly frank way about the social justice implications of climate change, her admiration for Greta Thunberg and how Nelson Mandela taught her to listen to both the locals and young people for insights. She tells us all about her position as Chair of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders working together for peace, justice, and human rights, founded by Mandela. Not one for shying away from controversy, Mary also discusses her struggles closer to home while fighting for political change in Ireland and how she's proud of the Ireland that exists today. Irish law in an international outlier in its restrictions on where its its citizens can vote. The franchise is limited to those resident inside the boundaries of the 26 counties of the republic, with almost no provision for early, postal or overseas voting. Ahead of a planned referendum to extend the right to vote for president to all Irish citizens, including in Northern Ireland and overseas, Naomi O'Leary and Tim Mc Inerney explore the political implications of the current voting system and weigh the arguments for and against change. We hear the case for reform from Irish people from the north, and from people who travelled back to Ireland in the famous 'Home to Vote' movements. This episode features a report from the campaign launch of Votes for Irish Citizens Abroad by contributor Michael Lanigan, as well as the voices of ordinary people in Dublin on their hopes and concerns about the proposal. March 8th marks international women's day, an annual celebration of the achievements of women across the globe. And this year's campaign is: Be Bold For Change. To discuss climate change and equality, and how it intersects with the role of women worldwide, our new Elephant producer and co-host Charlotta Lomas spoke with a woman who has herself been bold for change - Mary Robinson who was the first female President of Ireland from 1990-1997. She now leads the Mary Robinson Foundation: which is devoted to climate justice and she is also the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate Change.
