Eamon de Valera served as Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) four times, and as Irish President between 1959 and 1973. The most significant figure in the independent country's century-long history, de Valera was a key figure in securing and moulding Irish independence for six decades. His long public life has led to a popular image of de Valera as austere, pious, and as representing the economic and cultural stagnation that gripped Ireland for much of the 20th century. My guest for this episode is Diarmaid Ferriter, lecturer in Irish history at University College Dublin.

Before Maeve and Mary’s new podcast series can truly begin, Maeve’s got a confession to make; she doesn’t really, properly, understand what the Paris Climate Agreement actually is.   Luckily her co-host, the former Irish President, is more than happy to take her to school.   Let Maeve’s pain be your gain in this punchy Paris primer... Subscribe at mothersofinvention.online and follow the series on all social media using @mothersinvent to find out more, support the women in the series and get your hands on bonus material throughout the season.

March 8th marks international women's day, an annual celebration of the achievements of women across the globe. And this year's campaign is: Be Bold For Change. To discuss climate change and equality, and how it intersects with the role of women worldwide, our new Elephant producer and co-host Charlotta Lomas spoke with a woman who has herself been bold for change - Mary Robinson who was the first female President of Ireland from 1990-1997. She now leads the Mary Robinson Foundation: which is devoted to climate justice and she is also the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate Change. We reached Mary Robinson by phone in Dublin. Custom Artwork by Krista Lai
