Parental discretion is strongly advised.IN THIS EPISODE: A 1930s art deco swimming pool is not the first place you think of when people mention the most haunted places in the country. So why is this 85-year-old building bursting at the seams with spirits and specters? The answer to that is not any easy one to give. (The Haunted Smethwick Baths) *** They look strange, there's a weird otherworldliness to them, when encountered people often find the've lost hours of time with no memory, and the beings are often known to abduct people in the middle of the night. It sounds like I'm describing alien abduction – but the same, all of it, can also be said of fairie folk in European legend. Is it possible there is a connection? Could the mythical fairies of old actually be the extraterrestrials we tell stories about today? (The Extraterrestrials Want Twinkies) *** Elsie Eiler pays taxes... to herself. She grants her own liquor license to herself for the tavern she owns – which is possible when you are the mayor… and bartender… and law enforcement, and even the librarian. You see, Elsie Eiler is the sole resident of Monowi, Nebraska – but that doesn't mean she's alone. (Monowi, Nebraska – Population One) *** They don't try for a perfect likeness. They have to suppress their creativity. They even find help from birds nests. We'll look at some of the trade secrets used by forensic artists. In the final episode of 2024, Amanda is inspired by a conversation with her friend Janelle to explore board games that teach children (and adults) the “winner takes all” aspect of late stage capitalism and/or reinforce the message that success=stuff. We'll take a journey through the history of board games, with a deep dive into the Game of Life. We'll check out the shopping focused games of the 1980s and 90s, including Mall Madness. We will touch on some other games that just seem agonizing for adults to play, like Payday (too real). And we'll explore the origin story of Monopoly, along with all of the other games that (accidentally or otherwise) seem to reinforce dumb ideas like the bootstrap myth.Amanda also talks about what a "no buy year" means to her (and somehow ties into board games, because why not). This episode also includes an audio essay from Eleisha of SHIFT, a refillery in Narberth, PA. From Candyman to Slenderman, we'll look at a few of the most terrifying urban legends that are based on true tales, and we'll look into what it takes to create an urban legend of these magnitudes. (The True Stories Behind Terrifying Urban Legends) *** Unidentified Flying Objects have been around much longer than Roswell. Four centuries ago, before flying vehicles were known to even be possible, ancient Russia had quite a shock when they looked into the sky. (The Robozero Lake UFO of 1663) *** In St. James Episcopal Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia there is a grave that people say began to weep tears of blood when they got too close. (The Halloween Legend of Mary Meinert's Grave) *** A man believes he hears the sound of a car crash – but it shouldn't be impossible from where he lives. (The Unexplained Sound of a Crash) *** While serving a life sentence for the murder of 14-year-old Mary Ellen Deener, Lester Eubanks was granted a trip to an Ohio mall — then he vanished without a trace. John and Craig explore the counterfactuals of Hollywood history — the relatively small moments that, if the coin toss had gone the other way, would have massive ramifications on the world as we know it. What if Edison was allowed to keep his monopoly on motion pictures? What does our industry look like without the Paramount Consent Decree? What if George Lucas died in his car accident? Would superhero movies have dominated our culture if Iron Man had bombed? What studios would have gone down if Titanic had sunk? And what if Netflix had stayed with its DVD-only model? In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Craig talk capitalism and solve its problems once and for all. Some of y'all may be too young to remember, but in the days before email, getting a handwritten letter in the mail was fun. Somebody had taken the time to write out a message just for you and sent it through time and space. It could be from an old friend, a lost love, or a secret admirer. You couldn't wait to get inside and discover what was so important that it needed to be personally drafted for your eyes only. But when school bus driver Mary Gillispie opened an envelope addressed to her in 1976, she had no idea that it would mark the beginning of a bizarre campaign of terror that would dominate her life for decades. One that would include blackmail, obscenity, harassment, threats against her family, attempted murder, and letter after letter, drafted to disturb in the most intimate ways imaginable. And it wouldn't stop with Mary. The hysteria spread through the sleepy town of Circleville, Ohio like a plague. Secrets were exposed. Threats were made. Sometimes there were toxic powders in the envelopes, too. When the TV show Unsolved Mysteries got involved, they got their very own threatening letter—don't air the episode, or else. When Benjamin Franklin died in April 1790, his last will contained an unusual codicil, leaving 1000 pounds sterling each to Philadelphia and Boston, to be used in a very specific way that he hoped would both help tradesmen in the two cities and eventually leave the cities, and their respective states, with fortunes to spend on public works 200 years later. At a moment when it wasn't clear whether the United States would survive at all, Franklin made a gamble on the American spirit. To learn more about the fascinating tale of Ben Franklin's will, I'm joined by Michael Meyer, Professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh, and author of Benjamin Franklin's Last Bet: The Favorite Founder's Divisive Death, Enduring Afterlife, and Blueprint for American Prosperity. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. Four centuries ago, before flying vehicles were known to even be possible, ancient Russia had quite a shock when they looked into the sky. “THE HAUNTED SMETHWICK BATHS” and More Strange But True Tales! #WeirdDarknessIN THIS EPISODE: A 1930s art deco swimming pool is not the first place you think of when people mention the most haunted places in the country. Between the years of 1978 and 1996, the place to spend hot Jersey summers was at a place known as action park, it was high adrenaline, high stakes, and with low-security and almost zero safety features it was a park that allowed the rider to be in control of their experience. And though mixing high stakes rides with loads of alcohol and then hiring a bunch of teenage employees may sound like a good idea...wait no it doesn't…but it does sound like the blueprint for one of America's worst water parks….
