Ep 34: Second Act Solutions

In this episode, we tackle the "messy middle" of the second act. One of the solutions we offer involves a series of Try Fail cycles, where the protagonist encounters a carefully designed obstacle course that tests their resolve and pushes the plot forward. Ines emphasizes the importance of a structured approach to these cycles, suggesting that each cycle should include a plan, an obstacle, a setback, a scene of growth, and a regrouping phase to maintain narrative momentum and character development. While Leslye insists the best way to get out of the middle is with the "Yes, But" or "No, And" formula. This method ensures that each scene contributes to escalating the stakes—when a character succeeds ('Yes'), there's a complicating factor ('But'), and when they fail ('No'), the situation worsens or changes direction ('And'). This episode is packed with practical advice and approaches to help authors refine their storytelling skills, keep readers engaged through the mid-point of their books, and effectively develop their narratives towards a satisfying climax.    Sign up for author Nalini Singh's newsletter to receive fan service here: https://nalinisingh.com/ Want the official Psy-Changeling Reading Order? So, I considered adding it to that episode but soon discovered that the final version of the episode would be too long. That's why I created this, hopefully, short bonus show where I discuss what is a story beat. The mirror moment in a story is when the main character experiences a moment of clarity that pushes them to change direction. It is the turning point. That moment of clarity is when your character experiences an ah-hah moment. Most often, it is the unveiling of a truth about—themselves, the world, what they must do if they hope to survive, or what they must do to be "save the world," regardless of the price. Your homework for this episode is to read https://www.amazon.com/Write-Your-Novel-Middle-Approach-ebook/dp/B00IMIXI6U/ (Write Your Novel From The Middle: A New Approach for Plotters, Pantsers and Everyone in Between) by James Scott Bell. The question of the week is: What is your favorite "mirror moment" in a book, play, or movie? Leave your answer at https://www.writingpursuits.com/podcast/43/ (writingpursuits.com/podcast/43). Be confident! What if you had a resource to help you figure out the strengths and weaknesses of your first chapter? An objective, informative rubric to go by? If your first chapter doesn't work, then you have probably lost a customer for life. Or a chance to sign an agent or get a publishing contract. Don't leave things to chance. This rubric will help you identify the problem areas in your first chapter and figure out how to fix them. Be ready for queries. Be ready for readers. Get the results you dream about. This is the second episode in a three-part series of episodes on how to write a query letter. In it, Abigail teaches writers how to write the second paragraph of the query letter, otherwise known as the blurb or back cover copy. The back cover copy is the most important section in a query letter. Abigail shares important details writers need to make it stand out, some including: 3 Key Details Needed in Every Back Cover Copy: Character: Who is the main character? What do they want? What makes them ironic or the least likely hero for the story? Central/Main Plot: What is the main plotline? How does the character's choices impact the plot and vice versa? How can you whittle this down so it's concise and catchy? Hook: What makes your story different from others in the same genre? ***Jessica Faust and James McGowan list and describe these in their awesome Bookends Youtube video. Check out their channel for more amazing writing tips and advice on all things publishing*** James Scott Bell's 3-Sentence Method to Write a Back Cover: Name the main character, their vocation, and their situation when the story opens (also include what they want). But + “when this happens”: Think of the inciting incident of your story, what throws your character's norm off course. Now + “death stakes”: What are the main stakes in your novel—physical, psychological, or professional? How are they spotlighted in your back cover, and why will they be raised as the story moves towards its climax? The Secret: Great to include in your back cover! Example: Abigail analyzes some back cover copy examples to model how a strong back cover includes the details and strategies discussed in this episode. When you buy things through this site, we may earn an affiliate commission.I was thrilled to welcome prolific author Tracie Peterson to the episode this week. We chatted about her book, Along the Rio Grande, about how Christian fiction has changed but still influences people around the world, and about what it's like to coauthor a book. Along the Rio Grande by Tracie PetersonIs her compassion doing more harm than good?  Recently widowed Susanna Jenkins has decided to follow her family to the booming town of San Marcial, New Mexico, for a fresh start and to aid in her family's sudden change in fortune. They are tasked with managing her uncle's new Grand Hotel, and it takes all her patience to try to help her parents see the good of their circumstances and relinquish their sense of entitlement. She's hopeful when her brother becomes determined to get a job and make his own way, and she feels drawn to his kind boss, Owen Turner, who works as a boilermaker for the Santa Fe's train shops in town. But the hard work only seems to fuel her brother's anger, and his rough new friends give her pause. When misguided choices put Susanna's family in an even more precarious situation, she worries her help has only made things worse. Leaving her family to fend for themselves seems like the best option, but how can she walk away from the true friendships--and love--that she's found?Get your copy of Along the Rio Grande.Preorder the next book in the series, Beyond the Desert Sands.Tracie Peterson gave her life to Jesus at the age of six. Tracie knew at an early age that God was calling her to ministry, and writing for Him has allowed her to offer the Gospel message and encourage people to hope in the Lord. Her motto in writing, as well as all other aspects of life is Soli Deo Gloria—For God Alone the Glory.Often called the “Queen of Historical Christian Fiction,” Tracie Peterson is an ECPA, CBA and USA Today best-selling author of more than 110 books, most of those historical. This week’s episode is an invitation to explore conflict, embrace conflict, and even revel in conflict. Grant and Brooke cite authors—like Vladimir Nabakov, James Scott Bell, and Dean R. Koontz—who will help you feel less conflicted about conflict. This week’s guest, Melanie Abrams, has a lot to share about conflict, from how she’s handled it in her own books, to how she grapples with it as a parent who writes (or a writer who parents), to the formula she urges her students to consider in their own writing: Desire + Danger = Drama.

EPISODE 180I Today's guest is bestselling and award-winning author (https://amzn.to/2vsPSJx) . From the first book, Jim talks about the Ahhh and the Uh-Oh types of endings. There can be a satisfying ending where it all works out for the protagonists, or at the end, when things seem to have worked out, the reader glimpses some little thing that says something bad might still happen, like at the end of Stephen King’s (https://amzn.to/38omBhT) . There are genre conventions for some books like the happily ever after in romance, but there are all kinds of shapes to endings. As an author, you need to find the right trajectory for your ending. Not having any idea what it is can lead to a lot of rewriting or a less than satisfactory ending for readers. (https://amzn.to/2vsPSJx) is a reference book to find the problem you’re having with your story and some suggestions on how to fix it. Jim has so many creative suggestions for writing books - this is a great episode for any level of writer! EPISODE 172I Interviewing the lovely Patricia Bradley was an exercise in paradoxes. Hearing this sweet Christian woman pronounce in her soft, Southern drawl, "Oh, I love to talk about murder. It's just fun" was just the beginning of my mind bending to look at things differently. :-D But I should have expected nothing less after I read the tagline for her website: Where love and faith cross paths...with murder. Patricia writes romantic suspense and says that murdering your characters is a great way to kill off your anxieties. (I think I'm going to try that! :-D ) What follows is a fun conversation about how she writes - an encouraging look at writing for pantsers! My biggest takeaway was when I realized that Patricia writes the scenes with the murderer or psychopath's point of view without knowing who the bad guy is - so it's just "he or she" - and later she'll have an ah-ha moment about who that person is in her story. I can't wait to try this! Patricia has a lot of great stuff on her blog, and she also suggests several other blogs/websites including: Suspense Sisters: https://suspensesisters.blogspot.com/... Mel and Abby continue their discussion of Don Maass’ workshop and talk strategies on getting your deadlines done on 3 days of no sleep (or doing anything on no sleep, like finding your way around the Vegas airport at 12:30 AM..).Trying to get your page count done while on “vacation” (or professional development) can be rough, but it’s important to accept what you can do and appreciate your own effort, and not get down on yourself about word count or page count.“I didn’t beat myself up for it…so what, you wrote eight pages. That’s eight more than I had before!” – AbbyMaking readers care – Don Maass says that when the protagonists care themselves, we care about the protagonists. In Abby’s story, her protagonist is in the middle of her journey – she had a goal and failed, she feels like she can’t make a friend and she abandoned the friend she had, and she doesn’t know who she is anymore. This is her “mirror moment” (James Scott Bell, her turning point. Now, she’s going to do the impossible, but it has to feel impossible first.Kemlo points out that even though Abby had heard about this particular moment in the hero’s journey before, sometimes you need a bunch of different tools in your toolbox before something clicks – this particular moment in Don Maass’ workshop happened to be the moment it clicked for her.Abby and Kemlo work on deepening Bernadette and Logan’s friendship – Logan’s actions need to be just vague enough for Bernadette to have some inner conflict, to wonder if he really is her friend. Abby wonders if this could be a take-charge moment for Bernadette, an opportunity for her to claim some agency over what happens to her. This is what Don Maass calls “static energy vs kinetic energy”. Static energy is just sitting back and letting things happen to you, and kinetic energy is standing up and taking charge of your fate. Even a small defiance along the way is better than no defiance at all.Kemlo says that now Abby needs to bring it full circle. How do these events affect Bernadette? How do they make her change her plans, or not?“Maybe I need to go back to the beginning of this chapter…where she realizes she’s a bad friend and she wants to change, but maybe now she starts with Logan. ‘This is the one kid that’s been nice to me, maybe that’s where I need to start’.” - Abby

[Ep 189] When I feel my writing getting a little stale, I start looking around for a teacher. Now, I don't mean I'm looking for a class with an instructor, although that's certainly another way to learn and grow as a writer. I mean I start looking around for an author and text that has something to teach me. In this way, I can continually improve my skills as a writer. Develop a Customized Course of Study A lot of writers feel a strong urge to enter an MFA program to do this. If you feel compelled to pursue that, by all means, research it and see if that's the best next step for you. But you don't have to embark on a pre-planned course of study. You can develop your own path to establish a writing foundation, to build on an existing set of skills and experience, or to refresh your techniques after falling into a writing rut. Without spending a dime, you can invent an efficient, customized writing course using resources readily available online or at your local library to build your skills and style. By including reading, study, analysis, and practice pertaining to your biggest areas of struggle or weakness, you can write to discover the skills and techniques you're lacking and integrate them into your work. Discover New Skills the Ben Franklin Way Novelist James Scott Bell wrote an article about how to strengthen your fiction the Ben Franklin way.1 He explains how Ben Franklin came up with his own self-study course to grow in virtues. Franklin made a grid and evaluated whether or not he was successful in his pursuit of a given virtue each week. In The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, the Founding Father concluded he did not attain perfection, as he had hoped, but “was, by the endeavor, a better and happier man than I otherwise should have been if I had not attempted it.”2 James Scott Bell proposes the fiction writer identify key areas to develop into a stronger writer much as Franklin identified his list of virtues. Bell calls these key areas “critical success factors,” or CSFs.3 He explains: Business and sales folk have been using Franklin's system for decades to improve their own performance. Not via Franklin's virtues, but by determining their own areas of competence. These are called critical success factors.4 Bell goes through each CSF a fiction author would want to develop and points to related resources: if the reader wants to learn about scenes, voice, or other aspects of fiction, Bell provides links to articles or books that can address each of those. By tapping into these resources, the writer develops his own self-study course.5 You can do the same. Discover Your Critical Success Factors You can make a list of what you feel are your personal CSFs related to the writing you do. In this way, any of us can identify an area to improve in and find instruction and models pertaining to that exact skill or technique and we can learn from them. For fiction, you could check out James Scott Bell's list in that article, where he cites the seven key elements a fiction writer could focus on: plot structure characters scenes dialogue voice meaning (theme).6 You could make a list of CSFs for nonfiction writers. This might include research, idea development and organization, sentence fluency and word choice, grammar skills, or something as focused as transitions. Find Mentor Texts Find some “mentors,” or more accurately, some “mentor texts” you can study and learn from—mentors who excel in the areas where you feel you're weak. Some of these mentor texts may be instructional, explaining how to do things. Others may simply serve as models. When you find a mentor text like that—that's a model—it's time for close reading. And I've found that close reading is achieved easily with a practice we normally think of for children: copy work. Any adult ready to develop stronger skills can practice copy work. It forces close reading.

Hey there Word Nerds! I’m so glad you’ve joined me for this episode. Today I am so thrilled to be  interviewing someone who I have honor of calling a mentor and friend: James Scott Bell. Jim is the author of the #1 bestseller for writers, Plot & Structure, and numerous thrillers, including his Mike Romeo series: Romeo’s Way. He is also a wonderful teacher who has taught writing at numerous conferences and I’ve had the pleasure of hearing him speak about writing at several events. Each time I come out learning a valuable new technique that I can apply to my work right away. As a teacher, his superpower lies in the way he explains plot and story structure. Whenever I have questions about how to structure a book or plot a story, I always look first to his books or the notes I took in one of his conference sessions. So get those pens and notepads ready, people because you are going to learn a LOT during this episode. Today Jim and I talk about what is perhaps one of the most important, and yet most often overlooked elements of your story: the midpoint. In this episode Jim and I discuss: The difference between plot and story The midpoint (or mirror moment) of your story and why it’s important How to use the middle of the story to make the beginning and ending make sense Pre-story psychology of your main character Using Scrivener to help structure your story Plus, Jim’s #1 tip for writers. More about James Scott Bell: JAMES SCOTT BELL is the author of the #1 bestseller for writers, Plot & Structure, and numerous thrillers, including, Romeo’s Rules, Try Dying, and Don't Leave Me. In addition to his traditional novels, Jim has self-published in a variety of forms. His  novella One More Lie was the first self-published work to be nominated for an International Thriller Writers Award. He served as the fiction columnist for Writer's Digest magazine and has written highly popular craft books including: Write Your Novel From the Middle, Super Structure, The Art of War for Writers, and Conflict & Suspense. Jim has taught writing at Pepperdine University and at numerous writers conferences in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara where he studied writing with Raymond Carver, and graduated with honors from the University of Southern California Law Center. Voice is one of the most important aspects of writing well, whether you’re writing fiction or non-fiction. Yet it’s also one of the most elusive things for a writer. What does it mean exactly, when you talk about “voice”? And what can you do to cultivate a voice that will grab readers and not let them go until they’ve hit the end of your story? This is exactly the topic that James Scott Bell tackles in his latest book, Voice: The Secret Power of Great Writing. In his book, James reveals the true source of voice, and what any writer in any genre can do to capture it for their own work. I had the privilege of speaking with James about the methodology he’s developed over the years as a novelist to create a distinctive voice. In our conversation, James breaks down the steps he goes through as he develops his characters, and shares the process and techniques he uses as he writes. He also talks about the writers who had the biggest influence on his career. James is an award-winning author of bestselling thriller novels, and he’s published more than half a dozen bestselling books on the craft of writing. He’s also a frequent contributor to Writer’s Digest and Kill Zone, a popular writing blog. James is also known as one of America’s most acclaimed writing coaches. This is the inaugural episode of the Irish Writers Podcast, where three unpublished writers discuss their writing, their journey towards publication and interesting topics for writers. In this episode Kate, Cathy and Maire introduce themselves and their writing.   Reference is made to a George R.R. Martin quote : “I think there are two types of writers, the architects and the gardeners. The architects plan everything ahead of time, like an architect building a house. They know how many rooms are going to be in the house, what kind of roof they're going to have, where the wires are going to run, what kind of plumbing there's going to be. They have the whole thing designed and blueprinted out before they even nail the first board up. The gardeners dig a hole, drop in a seed and water it. They kind of know what seed it is, they know if planted a fantasy seed or mystery seed or whatever. But as the plant comes up and they water it, they don't know how many branches it's going to have, they find out as it grows. And I'm much more a gardener than an architect.”   And to James Scott Bell’s book ‘Write your novel from the middle” which I read, not wrote, clearly.   Presented and produced by Cathy Clarke, Kate Mulholland and Máire Brophy.
