Award-winning author Jessie Kanzer's UNLOCKING YOUR INNER ZELENSKY: Lessons We Can All Learn from an Unexpected Leader , draws on Volodymyr Zelensky's words and actions to show how to improve how we lead, and how we live.   Early praise and more info are below, and a list of possible interview/discussion questions is attached. Jessie Kanzer, a half-Ukrainian child of the USSR who had a small part in Zelensky's first major film, sees Zelensky as "a spiritual leader for our times."  As a native Russian speaker (like Zelensky himself), she picks up on the deep philosophical ramifications behind his words. Rich and yet easy-to-read, the life lessons in UNLOCKING YOUR INNER ZELENSKY are accessible and wise, and are more about starting where you are than about war. Each chapter begins with a key piece of wisdom drawn from Zelensky's words, along with advice for implementing it in our own life. Readers will see how Zelensky handled his much-criticized background as a comedian when he came into elective office.  Topics include: Speak Truth to Everything Unstick Yourself Decide with Courage Use Your Energy Wisely Tips include spreading graciousness, and acknowledging that it's not "all about you" to erase differences in backgrounds. Kanzer is a self-described "spiritual nerd" who followed Zelensky long before he stood before a blue and yellow backdrop on the national stage. She writes, "What is so incredible about our man Volodymyr is that his belief in himself stems not from seeing himself as special, but from seeing himself as ordinary and from knowing there is great power in this ordinariness."   About the Author JESSIE ASYA KANZER is the award-winning author of Don't Just Sit There, DO NOTHING and Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky. She was born in the Soviet Union and left at age eight. A former reporter and actress, she once found herself on the set of a Zelensky film and has been following his story ever since. Kanzer's writing has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, the Washington Post, and many other publications. She's been interviewed on podcasts and TV programs across the country. Jessie Asya Kanzer is the award-winning author of Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky and Don't Just Sit There, Do Nothing. She was born in the Soviet Union and left at age eight. Jessie shares that ‘what is so incredible about our man Volodymyr is that his belief in himself stems not from seeing himself as special, but from seeing himself as ordinary and from knowing there is great power in this ordinariness. His belief, in other words, is in the abilities of each ordinary individual.' Jessie Kanzer is a former reporter and actress. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, the Washington Post, and many other publications. She's been interviewed on podcasts and TV programs across the country. She lives with her husband, two daughters, and two cats in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.JessieKanzer.com Book: Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky by Jessie Kanzer The Movie I was in a movie with Zelensky. He was one of three main characters. The movie was either called “Love in the Big City” or “No Love in the City,” depending on the translation. I had a small part in the movie. At one time, I struggled and eventually gave up on acting, moved on with life, had kids, and started writing. I've had moments where people I worked with in movies or TV shows became successful, but nobody became a president before. Zelensky sent me the link to the movie in 2019, even though this movie was made back in 2009. It was a unique experience to see someone I knew from the entertainment world become a president. My Zelensky The book I wrote about the Tao Te Ching that I talked to you about last year had a chapter about Zelensky in it. The chapter was called My Zelensky and it was the Taoist principle I was talking about. The chapter talked about the Taoist principle of using whatever life gives, regardless of what circumstances you're given. It says do not waste anything. And so I had Zelensky as an example then, and he had been born into the Soviet Union as I had. I left, but he had an immigration of sorts of his own where that tyrannical rule fell. The country was trying to break through and be free. He was a person who actually was able to really enact change. What is Different About Zelensky? Zelensky has changed the history of his nation, his people, and millions of people. I think he changed the trajectory for Europe, maybe for the world. And so I started following him out of that intuition that something is different about this person. When he emerged on the world stages as he is now, I started to see why I was pulled towards studying him. He always said I'm just an ordinary person. He said. I'm not a politician. When he was first elected, he said, I'm just a simple person who has come to break down the system. One of the lessons is about his PR skills. It was his job to really get other parts of the world to understand the importance and value of Ukraine. This includes Europe, neighbors of Europe, and especially North America. Ukraine is the producer of a lot of food, and specifically a lot of bread. I learned significant PR skills from Zelensky including public relations skills and the ability to communicate. I'm still learning. Thus the reason for the title, Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky. Jessie Kanzer has been on this podcast before with her book on the Tao Te Ching. In fact, we did an event together earlier this year on that same topic. She is a great author and so fun to speak with. Her latest book comes out this week. It's called Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky. She was inspired by her own connections to the president of Ukraine, including being in a movie with him. You'll get to hear more about that in this episode. She uses his life as an example of spiritual concepts that we can all use to empower, inspire, and make the most out of our lives. There is a lot of unrest in the world today but I truly believe that anything we can do to help us get back to our spiritual center will make the world a better place. I hope that you are all well. I hope that you and your family are safe. May Jessie's message today remind you that an ordinary person can rise up and make a difference. HOW TO DO NOTHING with JESSIE KANZER     “The Tao is simple… It is our human nature, I think, to complicate things where they need not be complicated.” – Jessie Kanzer       Episode Summary:   Does life seem more hectic than it was even before the pandemic?   Today we talk with Jessie Asya Kanzer, whose story begins as an child refugee from the Soviet Union seeking asylum in the US with her family. A descendant of Holocaust survivors living in a communal apartment with four households, one toilet, and a rickety old bathtub in the middle of the kitchen -- her family finally made it to Brooklyn in 1989.    As an 8-year-old refugee who only spoke Russian, Jessie (or “Asya” then) yearned to fit in. She changed her name and much about herself. She experienced depression, bulimia, anxiety and lost herself pursuing the American Dream.   Until she stopped.    In Tao Te Ching she rediscovered herself, found her innate power, and she learned to chill. Her book, “Don't Just Sit There, DO NOTHING”, will help you do the same.    Listen in to hear about Jessie's struggles and triumphs through the lens of the 6th century philosophy Tao Te Ching, which she calls “the world's oldest self-help book”.       Topics We Discuss:   [3:18] How Jessie's story -- from losing identity as a child refugee from Russia with Eastern Europe roots, through renaming and reinventing herself in America, struggling bulimia, and being physically broken after suffering a car crash -- steered her toward a deep dive into Tao Te Ching, and ultimately going within spiritually.   [15:42] Tenets of 6th century philosophy Tao Te Ching: simplicity, patience, compassion.  We consume more information in a single day than people did in their entire lifetime in just a few hundred years ago.   [27:46]  Creativity comes with unscheduled time.    [31:01] What the paradox of “do nothing” means to Jessie.     [41:30] Amy's speed round questions: What is spirituality? What is something people don't know about you? What is one thing you're looking forward to right now? What's one thing you're deeply grateful for? What book in on your nightstand? About Jessie Kanzer: Jessie Asya Kanzer is the author of Don't Just Sit There, DO NOTHING: Healing, Chilling, and Living with the Tao Te Ching — a book that combines ancient philosophy to help us live in the midst of current chaos. Born as Asya Bronfman in the Soviet Union, Jessie emigrated to the U.S. at age eight after surviving a holocaust. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, New York Daily News, Wall Street Journal, The Independent, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Ravishly, and Romper. She lives in Dobbs Ferry, New York, with her two daughters and husband. She considers herself an expert in Doing Nothing. In this episode, Adam and Jessie discuss:Expressing your emotionsDon't just sit there, do nothingReinventing your identityFly your freak flagPeace begins with you. Key Takeaways:Journaling, or doing whatever comes naturally to you in terms of expressing your emotions, is a crucial part of getting through your difficulties.Stillness, or just a moment of getting quiet while deep breathing and connecting to the present moment is the key to healing and transformation. There's nothing wrong with creating a new identity or reinventing yourself. Everyone has their own issues and labels that they wish to unlearn from the world, and if changing their identity or unlearning all they believe they know is how they deal, then let them.Allow yourself to not be ashamed of your own wicked personality and stop attempting to conceal some aspects of yourself or your past. People will undoubtedly judge you, but keep in mind that we aren't designed to fit into some preconceived idea of normalcy. If you want peace in the world, start with yourself. Be the change you want to see in the world. Change is inevitable, but taking steps in improving yourself to rise to the occasion and grow as a person will help to spread peace. "Life is always a moving journey, you're not actually done. Effect on Emotions Mindfulness taught me that there's more than one of me. There's the one that feels the emotions that react and the observer part of myself. Because I'm able to observe myself and watch myself, I've become much less reactive. That doesn't mean I judge my emotion, or I hate my emotion or anything like that. But I'm able to come back to the center much quicker because I see it. I feel it. I work through it if I need to work through it, but I don't react to it anymore. I mean, I should say most of the time. Thoughts on Breathing I love breathwork. I don't do it daily; sometimes I do breathwork instead of meditation. I am amazed at how breathing in certain ways can help you enter almost a different dimension. That is why for me, breathing really gets me out of my monkey mind. The Soviet Union divided people very weirdly, like on their passports. On my passport, it just used to say, Jew. That sounds crazy to people when I say that, but that's what it said. And then my family; half of them from Latvia, half from Ukraine. But our language was Russian because often these geopolitical shifts are affected, individual people. And I was one of those people.  Therefore, I came from this war-torn family that suffered a lot under Stalin under the Nazis, and finally made it to America, the land of the free, but unfortunately, mindfulness was not taught, at least not the way it is now. A lot of kids were pretty mean when they heard my Russian accent. First, the Russian language, because they had watched movies like for instance, Rocky Five, these movies where the Russians were always the evil people. So there was a lot of making fun of, and you know, I remember I'd be stopped, in the middle of the stairway,  they would laugh and say, Where Are you Russian, Russian. As a result, all of these things I internalized because I was a very sensitive child. Bullying did not exist in the Soviet Union. The socialistic ideas that formed this country, a lot of them did not work clearly. But this kind of unity, versus individualism in the classroom, made everyone be really nice to each other. Can wisdom from the past still ring true today? Do you sometimes need help returning to your center when life gets busy? Do you know how to properly “do nothing”? MEET JESSIE KANZERAs an 8-year-old refugee who only spoke Russian, Jessie (or “Asya” then) yearned to fit in. Having arrived in America, she changed her name and much about herself. Later though, she experienced depression, an eating disorder, and all sorts of existential problems. She pursued Hollywood fame, men, and the American Dream, but always fell short - until she stopped.  With the help of the Tao Te Ching she rediscovered herself and her innate power, and she learned to chill. Her book, https://www.amazon.com/Dont-Just-Sit-There-NOTHING/dp/1642970352/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= (Don't Just Sit There, DO NOTHING), will help others do the same.  Visit https://jessiekanzer.com/ (Jessie Kanzer's website) and connect with her on https://web.facebook.com/JessieAsya/?_rdc=1&_rdr (Facebook), https://www.instagram.com/jessiekanzer/?hl=en (Instagram), and https://twitter.com/JessieKanzer (Twitter). FREEBIE: https://jessiekanzer.com/free-for-you (Read the first two chapters) of Jessie's book for free! IN THIS PODCAST:About the Tao Te Ching How to be an expert in doing nothing Let go of the “all or nothing” mentality About the Tao Te ChingThe Tao was written in the 6th century BC. It is amazing to me how human nature has changed very little. Our surroundings may have changed but our needs [are very much the same]. (Jessie Kanzer) Human beings at their core have been much the same throughout human history. People throughout centuries have struggled with: Comparing themselves to others Searching for external validation Following outside messaging for fear of stepping into who they are And so the Tao always brings us back to our center … brings us back to quietude, and encourages us to connect with our inner selves. (Jessie Kanzer) How to be an expert in doing nothingHave an activity that you do that centers on stillness: this can be meditation, yoga, meditative running, walking, breathwork, spending time in nature, and so forth. Seek stillness physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Focus on building the connection to your inner voice. Schedule time into your calendar: write “DO NOTHING” for 1, 2, 5, or 10 minutes in your daily activities. Enter your flow state: try activities once a day or week that help you to enter your flow state where you forget about time passing, and focus wholly on one thing. Let go of the “all or nothing” mentalitySometimes you need to be honest and real with yourself and push yourself to do the things that you have been avoiding getting to. However, when it comes to practicing stillness, you cannot beat yourself up about struggling because the struggle is a part of the process. Each time it does not go well, try again. I always tell people, and I say this in the book, do what you can. Do what you can for yourself … you start with little moments of stillness. (Jessie Kanzer) Consistent small actions that grow over time are far more sustainable than forcing yourself to try something completely new and then beating yourself up if you fail. Ep#095 How can a book written in 400 BC be a powerful guide for how to live today?  The Tao Te Ching a classic of Chinese philosophical literature, reminds us that spending less time trying to manipulate situations, people and circumstances to get what we want  and more time aligning ourselves to the natural flow of things  is the way to a joyful existence.    The central concept is that deep self awareness when cultivated gives us the ability to have a more genuine experience of reality which gives way to making empowering choices in our lives with ease.  Today's guest is author, speaker and fellow mom on a spiritual journey Jessie Kanzer.   Jessie Asya Kanzer was born in the Soviet Union.  At the age of eight, she emigrated with her family to Brooklyn.  Her intense personal struggles put her on a spiritual journey during which she discovered the Tao Te Ching, an ancient text that reminds us that there's great power in slowing down in our lives.   It forever changed her life.    We dive into her critically acclaimed book, which comes out next month:   DON'T JUST SIT THERE, DO NOTHING: Healing, Chilling & Living with the Tao Te Ching.  Jessie gives practical actionable insights on how we can use this ancient philosophy to help us thrive amidst our modern chaos. Visit her Website:  https://jessiekanzer.comFree Webinar Book Launch 3/1:  https://jessiekanzer.com/events/dont-just-sit-there-do-nothing-web-launch

Not many have the privilege of knowing who they are from the start.  For most of us, life is a journey of reflection and self-discovery.  Jessie Kanzer, actress and reporter turned author, joins us today to share her journey as a Russian Immigrant feeling lost in an alien world to her discovery of the Tao Te Ching that set her on the path to becoming the person she is meant to be. Listen to her grounding message that will not only benefit each of us personally but our loved ones as well.  Do not miss these highlights: 02:10 - A look into Jessie's book, Don't Just Sit There, DO NOTHING: Healing, Chilling, and Living with the Tao Te Ching, and an explanation of what Tao Te Ching is about. 6:21 - How these teaching influenced her coming from an “achievement-based” culture 9:05 - Connecting and trusting your inner voice and begin listening to our intuition, especially when it comes to parenting our children 14:55 - Realizing that stepping into our awareness requires vulnerability and that authenticity does not come in a form of perfection 17:22 - Jessie summarizes the Tao Te Ching to three concepts; simplicity, patience, compassion 23:15 - A look at how losing your identity can be a gift to find yourself again. 28:07 - A discussion about labels and the hindrance they bring to self-discovery 32:12 - The importance of helping our children to fully understand what they are feeling and put a name to it.  36:05 - “When somebody else questions their identity, it almost becomes a mirror. And if you have never faced the nuances within yourself, including nuanced emotions, that is very uncomfortable.” 39:33 - How The Tao can cure you of perfectionism 41:11 - The importance of embracing stillness About the Guest: Jessie Kanzer was born in the Soviet Union. At the age of eight, she emigrated with her family to Brooklyn. She is a writer, former reporter and actress. For years, Jessie felt like a failure, unable to hustle hard enough to "make it" either as an actress or in the rat race. Her childhood as a Russian immigrant in post-Cold War America heightened her insecurity and threatened her identity, desperate as she was to fit into a culture that was alien at best and hostile at worst. This loss and eventual reclamation of her sense of self sent her on a spiritual journey during which she discovered the Tao Te Ching, which changes everything for her. The Tao taught her that there was power in stillness and that all struggles come bearing gifts if you know how to recognize them. Her message will connect with listeners desperate to find grounding as we move into a new year filled with trepidation and no guarantees of a return to normalcy.   https://www.facebook.com/JessieKanzer (https://www.facebook.com/JessieKanzer) https://instagram.com/jessiekanzer (https://instagram.com/jessiekanzer) https://twitter.com/jessiekanzer (https://twitter.com/jessiekanzer) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI0_lGiZPq31VJ5w7hg7NuA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI0_lGiZPq31VJ5w7hg7NuA) https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessiekanzer/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessiekanzer/)

In her book, DON'T JUST SIT THERE, DO NOTHING: Healing, Chilling & Living with the Tao Te Ching Jessie Kanzer shares how perfecting the art of doing nothing can offer wisdom, healing, and grounding–and possibly be the most productive thing you have done in a while. For years, Kanzer felt like a failure, unable to hustle hard enough to “make it,” either as an actress or in the rat race. Her childhood as a Russian immigrant in post-Cold War America heightened her insecurity and threatened her identity, desperate as she was to fit into a culture that was alien at best and hostile at worst. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, Wall Street Journal, The Independent, the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Ravishly, and Romper. Jessie lives with her two daughters and husband in Dobbs Ferry, NY. During my interview with Jessie, you will learn: * How to trust your intuition and inner voice whenever doubts creep in * How losing sight of your true identity can be a gift (as long as you find it again) * How the Tao can cure you of perfectionism and people-pleasing tendencies * Why it's important to continue to embrace stillness, even amidst a push to return to “normal” following the pandemic * The Tao's wisdom on parenting, especially how the act of letting go can be the ultimate form of love * How the Tao can teach you to value yourself and not give your power away in romantic relationships. In a culture that insists on constant motion and self-improvement, the Tao Te Ching's philosophy reminds us that there's power in slowing down and making room for stillness in our lives. Don't Just Sit There, Do Nothing (now available where books are sold) offers practical actionable insights on incorporating its wisdom into your everyday life. And she has one of THE BEST presentations of "The Way" - The Tao Te Ching.  I was so excited to read this book. I hope you find that it resonates with you as Jessie is an incredible light for many of us who need to connect with our power and innate wisdom to heal.  You can find the book and lots of goodies on her website at www.jessiekanzer.com Get the book and when you're done write a review, as she has so much to share with the world!! More about Jessie Kanzer: Jessie was born in the Soviet Union as Asya Bronfman—a little Jewish girl living in a communal apartment with four families, one toilet, and a rickety old bathtub in the middle of the kitchen. Her grandparents had survived the Holocaust and her parents continued to struggle under anti-Semitic policies. They sought asylum in the U.S., waiting in Italy and in Austria, and finally made it to Brooklyn in 1989. As an 8-year-old refugee who only spoke Russian, Jessie (who was still “Asya” then) yearned to fit in. She changed her name and much about herself. Later though, she experienced depression, an eating disorder, and all sorts of existential problems. She pursued Hollywood fame, men, and the American Dream, but always fell short. Until she stopped. In figuring out how to better herself and her life, Jessie picked up a bucket-full of tools that she now shares with others—including the Tao Te Ching, which she's studied for years and which inspired her upcoming book. Though the #MeToo movement is not at the forefront of our minds anymore, its reckoning continues, as we deliberate on what responsibility the enablers carry for crimes they helped perpetrate or cover up (i.e., Ghislaine Maxwell and Chris Cuomo) and whether or not a longtime offender should go free (Bill Cosby). We're in muddy waters at this point, confusing waters, even—and those are the ones that author Jessie Kanzer knows all too well. She's a rape survivor who didn't acknowledge that she was a rape survivor until many years after the fact, being that hers was a date rape, murkier than a clearcut assault but non-consensual nonetheless, with power dynamics at play that she later recognized made her a clear victim.Still, “I didn't want to be a victim,” she says, “I still don't, which is why I wrote about my shame-spiral of an experience with the hope of helping others in my forthcoming book, Don't Just Sit There, DO NOTHING: Healing, Chilling, and Living with the Tao Te Ching. Since I was sexually assaulted by a supervisor at a film production company with close ties to Harvey Weinstein, I had to grapple with the fact that I was yet another fly in the never-ending Weinsteinesque net.”Jessie says she continued to put up with lascivious men as an actress, describing hilarious but damaging scenes in her book, including having to film a pilot with a bare bottom that a male producer photographed with his phone, just for fun.She has reckoned with her past, though, and now as a middle-aged mom, she has advice for other women navigating their way in a not-yet-safe world.

Do you ever feel like you need a break from the constant go, go, go? We know we do. And what's better than taking a break to do nothing? It sounds counterproductive, but when was the last time you just sat around and let your mind wander? Probably not recently, if at all. We're so busy nowadays that taking a moment for ourselves is a rarity. But it's so important. So on this episode, we are joined by Jessie Kanzer to discuss her new book, The Art of Doing Nothing, what that actually entails, how her book parallels the “Great Resignation”, the pandemic, and share some mindset tips to combat overwhelm. You are going to end this episode with a new mindset and the inspiration to get you out of that rut you're in! Get ready to relax and de-stress! Jessie Kanzer was born in the former soviet union. She set out on a spiritual search after losing everything and starting over. Traveled to various countries at eight years old before coming to the United States. She bottled up and buried emotions at an early age. This soon manifested into an eating disorder. She discusses how she tried to change and reinvent herself and it didn't work. She pushed on and graduated from college in an area she could have cared less about, but Summa Cume Laude of course.  Her turning point…a major car accident. She picked up the Tao Te Ching from her bedside table. An ancient Chinese philosophy and reinvented herself following the car accident.  Jessie discusses how hitting rock bottom is an opportunity to begin again. She tells her story, invites us to read her book, and will leave you feeling hopeful and inspired to take on that next challenge or to simply navigate this chaotic time we all find ourselves in.  Discussed in this episode: The Great Resignation. How her book is helping people through a period of major change in their lives. What is the Tao Te Ching? Jessie puts this book into perspective and makes it relevant to moms in the modern-day who need help with the day-to-day overwhelm and stress.  Mindset shift best practices.  Jessie's childhood in the Soviet Union and the parallel to the hustle culture we live in today.  The lessons the pandemic has taught us. Leveling up and accomplishing goals. How to change from within to effect change in society.  How Jessie's new book fits the mold of Christianity and other religions.  We are bringing various angles, ideas, and takeaways to this week's episode. We want to hear from you! Tell us what you liked, didn't like, or maybe what you would like us to continue in a future episode. Millions of people went to see John of God in Brazil for healing. Dr. Wayne Dyer famously spoke about a remote healing experience that he had. (In my last episode, Miraculous Healing, I share the details of that story.) But last December, after hundreds of women came forward, John of God (João Teixeira de Faria) was convicted of sexual abuse. In this episode, I speak with Jessie Asya Kanzer, a woman who went to see John of God and has grappled with the aftermath of his crimes. She wrote about her experience in an article that was published on Huffpost titled, 'I Found Healing With A Famed Spiritualist. Then He Was Arrested As A Sexual Predator.' Is it possible to separate the healer from the predator? We dive into the story of this Brazilian faith healer and explore the truth behind spiritual healing. www.nadiadelacruz.com
