Also learn about Steve and Greg's new book, Pinnacle: Five Principles that Take Your Business to the Top of the Mountain. --- Deploy a Custom Business Operating System with Greg Cleary Our guest is Greg Cleary, the founder and the Yoda of the Pinnacle Business Guides organization and the guide himself. And, Greg is also my co-author of our brand new business book, called Pinnacle, Five Principles that take your business to the top of the mountain. Most gracious, I don't know how to say that. Welcome to the show, Greg. Great to have you here. Thank you, Steve. It's really good to be here with you as well. It's very exciting. We are launching this book. So when you're listening to this podcast, the book is going to be either imminent or already out. So we're talking about the Pinnacle Business Guides organization and we're talking about the book. So Greg, let's start me with the question. You have described your entrepreneurial journey. How did you get here? How do you end up founding the Pinnacle Business Guides organization? Steve, how long is this podcast? I have a long journey. You can cut out the ones that I don't like. So listen, I started my entrepreneurial career, I went to a Brian Tracy seminar, and Brian Tracy had a program called the Psychology of Selling and the Psychology of Achievement back in 1985, so I'm dating myself a little bit, but it just turned on the lights for me. I just had never seen a seminar like that where you could just go and learn so much about a specific topic. And so I asked him for a job and I became one of his reps actually out selling his training. And I moved up through the regs, became the national sales manager, peak performers network, where we had Harvey McKay, Jim Rose. I just want to butt in here. I can't resist it. I love that. And I started my kind of entrepreneurial discovery through Brian Tracy when I was still in Hungary. I bought the CDs, the psychology of selling, the psychology of achievement, all that stuff. So it's amazing in the 90s. So sorry, carry on. We've been on the same path, Steve, as you know, until we recently came together a few years ago. So our journeys were similar. And from there, National Sales Manager, Jim Rohn, Harvey McKay, Tommy Hopkins, create a great network where people would buy a membership and come every month to different speakers. And as the business evolved, then they became mega events, right, with lots of people, thousands of people. And then training changed. We went to a train-the-trainer models, right, where you certified in-house people. That was called TeamTrack. I co-founded that company with a gentleman, Tom Winiture, and very successful. And then 2001, the towers came down and I was like, I have to get off the road. And I hung up my shingle to be a sales coach. So I'd heard about all these trainers. I'd been flying and listening and going to seminars, you know, for a long time, 16 years. And it was just time for me to do my own thing. And so I took a few clients and what I would do is I'd write the sales process. And then I said, listen, I'll go prove it to you. I'll go out and ride with your salespeople. And at any time in the sales presentation, they can just say, hey, Greg, do you have any questions? Whenever they got in trouble. And so from there, that took me to 2010. And one of my clients said, have you read the book Traction? And I said, no, I haven't. They knew I was a huge reader like you, Steve, look at all these books behind you. And I read it and I wondered if Floyd Wickman was in a relationship to Geno. And I had worked with Floyd on our lineup at Peak P...

This episode of the CFO Playbook features an interview with Chitra Balasubramanian, CFO at CircleCI, a continuous integration and continuous delivery platform that can be used to implement DevOps practices in the cloud or on private infrustructures. With more than 20 years of experience accelerating business growth through data analysis, Chitra is best known for scaling technology startups. As the current CFO, and one of two C-suite females, at fast-growth unicorn CircleCI, she's led the company through major wins to establish it as a leader in the space. Chitra has been critical to the company's fundraising alongside CircleCI's CEO, Jim Rose. She has led the company through multiple rounds of financing, raising more than $215 million throughout her tenure. In this episode of the CFO Playbook, Chitra talks about her interest in being involved in technology forward finance, which led her to the startup world. She speaks about using data to identify and model the impact of change to a business, how her company increased its global employee headcount amidst a pandemic, the importance of remaining agile as a CFO, and why you need to remain empathetic and ensure open communication with your company and investors.Take The CFO Playbook Listener Survey to help us improve the show. How can we think about what's really best for the company over the long term, but also make sure to invest in a way where we can remain nimble over the course of the shorter term time horizon, where there's a little bit more global uncertainty around us.”“I think it's important to be proactive. You should be a leader that educates your teams and provides guidance in an advisory role to the CEO. In this type of market for CFOs and other finance leaders, you don't necessarily know what are the right questions to ask, how to make sense of what's going on in the market, or how to navigate through these cycles. But, financial leaders are really in the best spot one because they have access to the information and that analytical horsepower. They've got a team with that economic mindset and can understand different business relationships.”--------Timestamp Topics:01:20 Career Path 06:00 Comparing Crises and their Effects07:50 Changing of Tech Sector Capital Markets 10:05 Navigating Current Market 13:20 Managing Investor Relations and Expectations 16:20 Leading Teams Through Change 18:20 Maneuvering the Market and Employment 20:20 Being a Partner with the CEO 25:50 Hiring, Retention, and Networking 28:20 Use of Technology--------Sponsor:This show is brought to you by Soldo, the brighter way to manage business spending and expenses. We know the secret to SaaS is technology that scales, but what about the people? Effective collaboration between go-to-market and R&D teams is critical, and it all starts with understanding how the other side operates. Product-led organizations are made up of “builders and sellers,” two parts of your organization who inherently approach their work differently. To get the entire organization on the same page, a different playbook is required. From introducing more effective communication practices to finding shared purpose in disparate operating models, there are required shifts that need to be made at each stage of growth. In this talk, 20+ year SaaS entrepreneur and CircleCI CEO, Jim Rose, will share: Understanding what product-led growth really means and how to find harmony during rapid expansion How to build and use a data-driven engine to get R&D and GTM teams speaking the same language How to look for the key signals that drive critical decisions at various stages of growth Full video: https://youtu.be/39NqdMTKUC8 Want to join the SaaStr community? Few businesses have grown as unconventionally as CircleCI. CircleCI, a CI/CD platform, experienced numerous product pivots at its beginning, saw key merges with other dev teams, and grew as a small engineering team adopting management and operational roles. On top of that, CircleCI was already a remote environment by the time COVID forced other companies to do the same, and so it went through its own separate set of challenges as the rest of the world shifted. CEO Jim Rose joins Scott Britton and Andrei Newman on the Built by Humans Podcast to offer his unique ideas on facing the problems of in-person vs. remote work, building out good software, and seeing the startup world as a journey. Here are some quick takeaways: Transitioning both into and out of a remote working environment can present cultural challenges that weren't addressed before. Accept that you'll make mistakes along the way and learn from them as you go - you can't always please everybody, so it's important that people trust you to have good intentions for them. Often, the idea you start a business on won't be the one you end up going with. Especially in the early stages, be open to pivoting focus until you find an idea with good product-market fit. When building out software, keep in mind that many of your problems have already been efficiently solved by other teams. Don't feel like you have to do everything from scratch - instead, use your needs as opportunities to work with, integrate, and possibly acquire others' solutions before you resort to building internally. Don't assume that an employee's performance issues are their own fault. Instead, view the problem systematically, and keep open communication with them to figure out what role they would work better in. Many times subpar work is simply the result of someone working on the wrong problem. The startup world can be seen as a collection of journeys. While finding early product-market fit and making profit are priorities, having the mindset that it's all ultimately about the people can be rewarding: without a good team and good friends, even a profitable journey might not feel worth it.

Zaki Hasan of The San Francisco Chronicle joins me to discuss a first for The X-Files...COMEDY! Well, not necessarily, but in any case this is the first darkly humorous and deeply strange episode to be written by Darin Morgan, brother of Glen Morgan. Zaki and I discuss the sociocultural impact of the series as a whole and try to place it in a modern context, before diving into the ins and outs of this episode, which is basically a whodunit that is rather easy to figure out... Though it doesn't really matter because you're really here for the compassionate sideshow spectacle that features actors playing people with deformities or enhancements, as well as actual people with these characteristics - such as 90s alternative superstars Jim Rose and The Enigma...as themselves...kind of. Almost no business is immune from the need for quality software development. The act of building quality software, and shipping it quickly, has become the core engine of value creation in companies across all industries. CircleCI allows teams to rapidly release code they trust by automating the build, test, and delivery process for both mobile and web apps, either in the cloud or on their own private server. Thousands of leading companies, including Samsung, Ford Motor Company, Spotify, Lyft, Coinbase, PagerDuty, Stitch Fix, and BuzzFeed, rely on CircleCI to accelerate delivery and improve quality. CircleCI was named a Leader in cloud-native continuous integration by Forrester in 2019 and has been named to multiple Best DevOps Tools lists. CircleCI is the first CI/CD tool to become FedRAMP certified and processes more than 30 million builds each month across Linux, macOS, Docker, and Windows build environments. Jim Rose returns to the Tech Talks Daily podcast for catchup after the recent $100 million Series E funding round. He also shares his thoughts on the recent acceleration of DevOps and CI/CD. CI/CD is a practice that has moved from "bleeding-edge" to mission-critical. If there's a screen between you and a customer, there's a piece of code needed to be maintained to keep the interaction alive. Jim also shares how they are helping businesses accelerate their delivery of value through software. This might be through working with Facebook on their open-source machine learning library, Pytorch, or with a non-profit creating low-cost ventilators to help COVID-19 patients in the developing world.

Will Gottlieb of Bleacher Report then joined the show to discuss the Bulls' hiring of Arturas Karnisovas as their new executive vice president of basketball operations and more. Later, Holmes listened to a portion of veteran Chicago television reporter Jim Rose's appearance on his House of L podcast in which Rose shared memories of covering the 1990s Bulls and Michael Jordan.
This week’s show featured Jennifer Hall describing the case of Ron and Kim Hernandez – two tireless workers for veterans’ care who now need assistance themselves. We've always wanted developers to use our platform irrespective of whether they're going to pay us, because we think, in a very community-oriented fashion, that a rising tide raises all the ships. The more developers can get familiar with more advanced technologies and more advanced approaches it's just good for everyone, including their consumers” — Jim Rose Production and music by Derek Bernard - www.haberdasherband.com/production Host: Trent Lapinski - https://trentlapinski.com https://hackernoon.com/ https://community.hackernoon.com/ https://contribute.hackernoon.com/ https://sponsor.hackernoon.com/ https://podcast.hackernoon.com/ https://twitter.com/hackernoon/ https://facebook.com/hackernoon/ P.S. Jim Rose would like A.G. Moos to consider today's "Rosie Did-ya-Knowsie" as he makes this decision!
Rita Watson grew up during the Jim Crow segregated south in Durham, North Carolina. She was the first black person to work at Woolworth’s Five and Dime store in Durham and continued to advance in her career as the climate improved for African Americans in the United States. In 1965, Rita moved from the south to the rural West after her husband was transferred to F.E. Warren Airforce Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The first time she and her husband drove into Cheyenne, she asked him to show her downtown. “This is it!” he proclaimed. Certain they would only stay for a couple of years, Rita began her tenure with the state of Wyoming and became active in the community. Cheyenne’s been home for Rita and her family for over half a decade. Rita began her employment with the state of Wyoming in November 1969 in the Department of Health, Vital Records Services, then transferred to the Department of Education in 1974. Since then, Rita has been the most constant presence within the Wyoming Department of Education, assisting the past eight Wyoming Superintendents of Education, beginning with Dr. Robert Shrader in 1974. From there, Rita worked with Lynn Simons from 1979 to 1991, Diana J. Ohman from 1991 to 1995, Judy Catchpole from 1995 to 2003, Dr. Trent Blankeship from 2003 to 2005, Dr. Jim McBride from 2005 to 2011, Cindy Hill from 2011 to 2014 and current Wyoming Superintendent of Education, Jillian Balow, since 2014. Rita also worked for two interim superintendents between the years 2011 and 2014: Dr. Jim Rose and Richard Crandall. Rita, quite simply, loves her job; she loves to make a difference in education and in the lives of others. Rita is also active in the community, volunteering and organizing many charitable causes. She’s a founding member of the Love & Charity Club, most well-known for organizing the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march in Cheyenne since 1982. When I asked Rita about wanting to make it a few more years at the Department of Education (Rita is almost 80), she adamantly proclaimed, “At least! I love what I do. I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do. . . other than work!”
"The media regurgitated a narrative that fit what they want to believe." --Jim Rose, KFAB's Morning News
In this podcast Shane Hastie, Lead Editor for Culture & Methods, spoke to Jim Rose of Circle CI about building a great engineering culture in a distributed, remote team. Why listen to this podcast: • Hiring engineers is a difficult task • Working in a completely remote organisation takes a particular type of person • It’s crucial that the engineering teams understand and empathise with their customers • You won’t find new and creative ways to solve problems unless you experiment and try new things, and some of those things won’t work • Ensure that your recruiting and hiring practices match the values of the company and that the onboarding process reinforces this • Ensure there is no “in vs out” – ensure everyone has the experience irrespective of where they are located More on this: Quick scan our curated show notes on InfoQ https://bit.ly/2PB0oHh You can also subscribe to the InfoQ newsletter to receive weekly updates on the hottest topics from professional software development. bit.ly/24x3IVq Subscribe: www.youtube.com/infoq Like InfoQ on Facebook: bit.ly/2jmlyG8 Follow on Twitter: twitter.com/InfoQ Follow on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/infoq Check the landing page on InfoQ: https://bit.ly/2PB0oHh
For almost 40 years, Jim Rose has been at Channel 7. That's AMAZING! It's weird, his name came up in the episode with Michael Kim, so I thought it would be a good idea to talk about Jim's career. It's a quick interview, but it's really good. Jim Rose was synonymous with the Jordan Bulls and we talked about that. Also, in this episode, I share, why I'm taking a much needed break...
CircleCI is the leading platform for software innovation at scale. With intelligent automation and delivery tools, CircleCI is used by more than 25,000 engineering organizations worldwide, including Facebook, Spotify, GoPro, Blue Apron, Bleacher Report, and Coinbase to radically reduce the time from idea to execution. The company also hit the headlines earlier this year for raising $31 million in Series C round of funding. But, I wanted to find out more about the secret of their success. Hiring the right people is really hard. Estimates put the true cost of recruiting the wrong employee anywhere from $250,000-$850,000 when you factor in hiring, onboarding, compensation, severance, and legal fees. Not to mention that most tech companies are still dramatically uneven with 70% men. Today I have a great story about how six-time founder and CircleCI’s CEO Jim Rose is tackling these challenges using data-first evaluations and opening up about how they think about hiring differently. CircleCI CEO, Jim Rose reveals how he completely reshaped the company's hiring process to weed out unconscious bias, decrease staff turnover, improve diversity, and most importantly make sure the right person for the job gets hired. We also discuss how technology helped him create a diverse and inclusive culture that transformed CircleCI.
QUICK NOTE: The online recording software we used for Matt's interview did something wonky to our audio for a moment. Pascual spent the last few hours making it sound better (believe us, it sounded worse) and we think it's good enough for the few short questions that it affects. Thank you for bearing with us on this. This week, the boys bring Susan Gerbic in to chat about all things skeptical, but most importantly, her organization "Guerrilla Skepticism on Wikipedia", a great group of people whose mission is to improve skeptical content on Wikipedia. But first, we have a fun conversation about "The Condom Challenge" with friend of the show Matt "The Tube" Crowley. You may know him from the Jim Rose Circus and might have caught him on Lollapalooza in the early 90s (as one of our hosts may or may not have).
