Big Big Train has been building momentum in the progressive rock world for years with their brand of quintessentially English, pastoral prog, but the sudden and tragic death of lead vocalist David Longdon dealt the band a huge blow. The band is about to release its first album without David on March 1 through Inside Out Music. New vocalist Alberto Bravin isn't Longdon, but his voice is well suited for what Big Big Train does well. Founding member Gregory Spawton was kind enough to discuss the new album with me, as well as such topics as his musical origin story, how the band got its name, how the band navigated the loss of Longdon and ultimately found Bravin, finally becoming a full-time career musician in his 50s, and much more. Held at our Shifting Landscapes exhibition in December last year, this panel discussion, moderated by Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee, brought together environmental justice activist and Climate in Colour founder Joycelyn Longdon, award-winning Cambodian-American filmmaker Kalyanee Mam, and folk singer, song collector, and author Sam Lee to consider how we might rekindle awe and reciprocity by remembering ourselves as extensions of the changing Earth. Centering narratives of kinship amid the uncertainty of our time—and inviting the surprise of spontaneous, emergent song—each share ways in which their work opens spaces of connection with the living world. Why We Care
How can technology be used in service of both nature and people with Joycelyn Longdon, Founder of Climate In Colour and PhD researcher at Cambridge University

In today's episode I'm chatting with Joycelyn Longdon, a PhD researcher at Cambridge University and the founder of Climate in Colour, an education platform dedicated to making climate conversations more accessible and diverse for the climate curious.Joycelyn works at the intersection of technology, ecology, sociology and racial justice. So there was a lot to cover in this episode! She describes bioacoustics and the technologies she works with for her PhD research as ‘Shazam for nature', which I think is fascinating – she explained how by listening to the sounds of nature we're able to monitor the health of ecosystems and enhance conservation work. We also spoke about the ethical implications of technology and how it can be used in service of nature and people, rather than against them. Another really important aspect of her work is participatory design, so she explained how she's working very closely with local communities to reduce racial and climate injustice by involving them in the process, getting their insights and feedback.Want to dive deeper?Subscribe to the Climate in Colour newsletter - https://climateincolour.substack.com/subscribe?utm_medium=web&utm_source=subscribe-widgetWatch Joycelyn's TED talk - https://tedxlondon.com/tedxlondon-countdown/programme/Come say hi!Climate in Colour on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/climateincolour/Joycelyn on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/joycelynlongdon/Why We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it. This is going to be a tough conversation because offense usually comes from hurt. First I would like to say that we can not and will not try to deny your pain or hurt from someone. Your feelings are real and I acknowledge them! SOmetimes we are hurt intentionally and sometimes not but regardless we need to deal with that hurt and it's what we do with those feelings that counts. We have to remember that God is our judge and defender. And even though he may not deal with things like we would want we have to trust that He will take care of it for us. Healing only comes when we can forgive and move on. AND not expect anything in return from the person you were wounded by. SO let's dive into some ways to get rid of offense so you can walk in more freedom friend!Check your expectations- sometimes our expectations …Don't hold on to things for too longDOn't assume negative intentAcknowledge your hurt and bring it to God             Which means dont' go running to others without first taking it to God and letting Him teach and guide your next steps. It's fine to have ONE mentor or close confidant but don't let it go further than that.                                                                                                        Matthew 5:23-24 The Message (MSG)If you enter your place of worship and, about to make an offering, you suddenly remember a grudge a friend has against you, abandon your offering, leave immediately, go to this friend and make things right. Then and only then, come back and work things out with God.5. Forgive- even when you don't feel like it- When we give it to God and let Him take over we can be FREE in Him.      Ephesians 4:31-32- Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.      James 1:19-20- Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.6. Pray pray and pray some more :) One thing to remember when we talk about offense is that the enemy want to keep us trapped by offense. If we are caught up in thinking about what someone has done to us then we can start allowing bitterness and resentment to take over…and when we are operating in those things we are not able to walk in all that God has for us! We heard how the assault of Two Sisters and Mount Harriet went last episode, both  were taken within 2 and a half hours – but 3 Paras attack on Mount Longdon was a different proposition. It's a steep sided hill about a mile long running almost west to east, it's main ridge above 600 feet in places and overall, about 300 feet on average above the surrounding ground. This hill formed only a small part of the Argentinian 7th Regiment and its commander Lieutenant Colonel Ortiz Gimenez overlooked the sector named Plata – or silver. It stretched from Mount Longdon eastwards as the northern Arm of Stanley Harbour nearly seven miles away. The Argentinians did not build deep defences here, and 7th Regiment was stretched along its ridge. The Summit of Mount Longdon was held by only one company – Bravo – with three platoons – but behind them was another platoon of the 10th Engineer Company which was fighting as infantry. There were also eight heavy 12.7mm machine guns manned by marines. The British later claimed there were commandos amongst the Regiment, but this is wrong. So 3 Para moved quickly to the rising ground, when a corporal of 3 Company stepped on a mine. It shattered his leg but he survived, while the Argentinians realised they were being attacked and opened fire. 3 Para had expected to find a single company protecting Longdon, but as we heard there were four. The first troops in action on the 13th were 30 men of the headquarters company of the Scots Guards, commanded by Major Richard Bethell. He was a 32 year-old former SAS officer, and looking forward to the action. His role was to create a diversionary attack along with the Blues and the Royals, south east of Mount Harriet. Bethell had already survived a mine blast after his land rover triggered one on a road during the previous days patrols. They advanced in the dark towards Tumbledown. It is a rocky ridge about a mile and a half long but very narrow, and 750 feet high at its most prominent point. It dominated the area of open ground and was the key to unlocking Stanley – and probably the end of the war.  Get bonus content on Patreon Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. The three platoons of B Company each approached the mountain silently, treading carefully through a series of defensive minefields. But following an explosion fighting quickly escalated with shocking speed and severity, resulting in some of the harshest close-hand fighting experienced by British troops since the Korean war. Climate change is a reality that every single one of use will have to deal with. There is a universality to it, a global truth, that in theory, should transcend all the things that divide us. But it doesn't and it hasn't. In huge part, because the people who are already feeling the impacts of climate change are mostly people of colour or are from parts of the world with significantly less power than the largest polluters. Climate change is doing a version of what we saw with the pandemic this year, instead of being a great equaliser in suffering, it is only deepening already existing inequalities. This week's guest is Joycelyn Longdon, the founder of Climate in Colour, which brings together conversations and information around the intersection of climate change and race, not only in the UK but around the world. Blyth Power special with Joseph Porter in conversation Blyth Power are a British rock band formed in 1983 by singer and drummer Joseph Porter, formerly of Zounds and The Mob. Blyth Power's music shows strong influences from punk rock and folk music, and the band members have described their sound as a cross between The Clash, Steeleye Span and The Rubettes. Established in 1983 and named after a railway locomotive, the one constant in an ever-shifting lineup has been drummer, vocalist, and songwriter Joseph Porter (real name Gary James Hatcher, born 21 February 1962 in Templecombe, Somerset). The band's lyrics often deal with episodes from history, ranging from the Trojan War to the Cod War — as well as aspects of English culture such as cricket, village life and trains. Porter is an avowed trainspotter, and in August 1998 the band appeared on the LWT television programme Holy Smoke! in a slot in which musicians discussed their individual religions — with trainspotting cited as his religion. Since 1993, Blyth Power recordings have been released on their own label, Downwarde Spiral. Since 2000 they have cut back on their touring schedule due to various personal commitments, but they have organised an annual mini-festival, the Blyth Power Ashes. The festival takes place in August of each year, and combines live music with a cricket match featuring band members and their associates. From 2011 the event moved to The Plough, in Farcet Fen near Peterborough due to its ever-increasing popularity. From 2015 The Ashes takes place at The Hunters Inn in Longdon, near Tewkesbury. Joseph Porter has also been involved with various side-projects, such as doing solo guitarist/vocalist performances and collaborating in two other bands, Red Wedding and Mad Dogs & Englishmen.
