One of our favorite interviews from 2024 (originally airing during Banned Books Week) ..... Karl Weber, author and editor of "Why Books Still Matter: Honoring Joyce Meskis: Essays on Books, Bookselling, and Publishing." Joyce Meskis was the founder of the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver, CO - one of the most famous independent bookstores in the country, and a business that helped revolutionize the public's notion of what a great bookstore could and should be. The interview also includes considerable discussion about the phenomenon of book banning - and how the practice of book banning tends to be detrimental to the health of a democracy.

Peter Grindrod talks with Karl Weber
Audio Introduction offers brief backstory on this series and the star that played "Dr. Sixgun," Karl Weber. This series was only heard during 1954, a time when that instrument of immediate mass media, aka "Television" was decimating the listening of radio dramas. The Golden Age of Radio had just about ended. This track will be found in the Playlist "Westerns" on the Soundcloud.com originating podcast.
The physician at Frenchman's Ford, a fictional western town, Dr. Ray Matson, was as quick with a pistol as he was with a helping hand. He was "the symbol of justice and mercy in the lawless west of the 1870s." The doctor, known as "friend and physician to white man and Indian alike" set an example of tolerance as all kinds of people made their way to Frenchman's Ford -- including a Chinese gambler, a Jewish gun-slinger, and a mail order bride! Karl Weber starred as Dr. Ray Matson as the gun-carrying, wandering doctor known far and wide as Dr. Sixgun. His story was told through the doctor's constantly inebriated companion, a gypsy, named Pablo, played by Bill Griffis…. Pablo also has a talking Raven by the name of Midnight. The Show, which was produced in 1954, when television was decimating the audiences who listened to radio, only lasted one season. Dr. Matson helped people where he could whether it was with medicine, a friendly ear, or with a gun… Dr. Sixgun. This track will live in the "Westerns" Playlist on Soundcloud.com podcast.

Karl Weber is Pete's guest today
Only 1 season of programming produced as this series was up against the blossoming popularity of television and the loss of radio drama audiences. However, it was a unique show starring Karl Weber as a Dr. who roamed the western territory in 1870's helping anyone who needed his help... He would offer them his medicine, time to have someone to talk with, or if need be, use his pistol... Dr. Sixgun! This program is in my "Western" playlist
