She incorporates film, printmaking, photography and poetry to construct installations in which she explores themes of dual heritage, migration and cultural dissonance. Her practice is deeply inspired by narrative structures built within folklore, mythology and cinematic spaces, exploring this through her own dual identity to reclaim and re-imagine the pre/post-colonial world. Her film Spicy Pink Tea has been selected for BAFTA qualifying festivals and won Best Dance Film at Aesthetica Film Festival and was nominated for the Young Scottish Filmmaker prize in Glasgow Short Film Festival. Arif was selected to undertake the 20/20 residency by UAL's Decolonising Arts Institute: a 15-month residency at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum leading to her first solo exhibition, Anam Ki Almari (The Trophy Cupboard) and 20 new permanent acquisitions in 20 UK public art collections. In 2023, she was awarded the Platform: Early Career Artist Award as well as the RSA Morton Award. She has also been nominated for the major national touring exhibition, Jerwood Survey III, launching at Southwark Park Galleries in March 2024 and touring in Cardiff, Sheffield and Edinburgh. https://www.aqsaarif.com/ OUR WEBSITE - www.persistentandnasty.co.uk Persistent Pal & Nasty Hero - Pals and Hero Membership Support In The Room - https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/in-the-room Email – persistentandnasty@gmail.com Instagram - @persistentandnasty Twitter - @PersistentNasty Coffee Morning Eventbrite - Coffee Morning Tickets LINKTREE - LINKTR.EE Resources Samaritans - Rape Crisis Scotland - Rape Crisis UK ArtsMinds - BAPAM Freelancers Make Theatre Work Stonewall UK - Trevor Project - Mermaids UK Switchboard LGBT+ - GATE PLANNED PARENTHOOD DONATE - DONATE ABORTION SUPPORT NETWORK UK - ASN.COM- DONATE WeAudition offer: For 25% off your monthly subscription quote: NASTY25 Backstage Offers: Get a free 12 months Actor Subscription: https://join.backstage.com/persistentnasty-uk-12m-free/

My Quest in Spain

I've just returned from my second hike of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I had such fond memories of my first trip in 2019, I wanted to go back since the day I returned. On the first trip I had gone not knowing anyone on the trip who then became my friends. This time I wanted to return to show friends the beauty and romance of the Spanish landscape and its people. One thing I missed on my first trip had become a quest. Over twenty years ago, I began reading books and poems by St. John of the Cross. St. John of the Cross was born in 1542 in a Spanish town close to Ávila. In 1567 he was ordained a priest and worked with Teresa of Ávila to reform the Carmelite order to bring it back to its primitive roots. His most familiar poem, Dark Night, describes how God purifies the soul passively and brings the theological life to perfection. There are two fundamental conditions in the spiritual process. There is the painful passage through the dark night and then the unspeakable joy of encountering God. I experienced that “dark night” on my first Camino in 2019 when I was walking the longest day of 18 miles. It wasn't so much the physicality of the walking that became the dark night, but it was my inability to keep my mind occupied. It was only when I concentrated on Christ that I was able to overcome the darkness. St. John was noted for his writings and teachings, but he also produced a small drawing of The Crucifixion around 1575 when he had a vision at the Monastery of the Incarnation in Ávila. We were unable to go to the Monastery on my trip in 2019 but it became an obsession of mine to see this small drawing. My quest was realized this year. This sketch was revolutionary that anyone could claim to be so united with God that he would view the crucifixion from God's perspective. This tiny drawing spurred a painting by Salvador Dali in 1951 that is in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. My quest is fulfilled. The drawing is breath-taking. Blessings, my friend, Agatha

Welcome back, listeners, to another exciting episode of "Exploring the World's Cities." Today, we're talking about how FD Capital now covers the whole if the UK and it's most vibrant cities and towns. I'm thrilled to talk about the diverse cities and towns of the UK and share some fascinating insights with our listeners. So, let's jump right in. When we talk about the largest cities in the UK, which ones come to mind? When it comes to size, the largest cities in the UK are London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, and Leeds. These cities not only boast impressive populations but also offer unique cultural experiences, historical landmarks, and vibrant communities. Let's start with London, the capital city. What makes London such a remarkable place? London truly is a global powerhouse. It's a city that seamlessly blends rich history with modernity. From iconic landmarks like the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and the Houses of Parliament to world-class museums like the British Museum and the Tate Modern, there's no shortage of things to see and do in London. The city also offers a thriving theater scene in the West End, vibrant markets like Camden and Borough Market, and a diverse culinary landscape. London sounds like a must-visit destination. Moving on, what can you tell us about Birmingham? Birmingham, often referred to as the "Second City" of the UK, is a bustling metropolis located in the West Midlands. It's known for its industrial heritage, vibrant arts scene, and diverse cultural offerings. The city is home to impressive landmarks like the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Cadbury World (a paradise for chocolate lovers), and the National Exhibition Centre. Additionally, Birmingham's canals, which played a significant role in its industrial past, provide a picturesque setting for leisurely walks. Host: Fascinating! Now, let's head north to Manchester. What sets Manchester apart from other cities in the UK? Manchester is renowned for its rich musical heritage, thriving sports scene, and vibrant nightlife. It's the birthplace of iconic bands like Oasis and The Smiths and boasts a legendary music venue, the Manchester Arena. The city also hosts two of the most successful football clubs in the country, Manchester United and Manchester City. Beyond that, Manchester offers excellent museums such as the Science and Industry Museum and the Manchester Museum, as well as the popular shopping district, the Trafford Centre. Manchester seems like a city full of energy and cultural significance. Now, let's head to Scotland and explore Glasgow. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, is known for its distinctive architecture, vibrant arts scene, and warm hospitality. The city is home to stunning Victorian and art nouveau buildings, including the iconic Glasgow School of Art designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Glasgow's cultural scene thrives with world-class museums and galleries such as the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the Riverside Museum. The city is also famous for its music festivals, including the annual Celtic Connections. Glasgow sounds like a city with a unique character. Lastly, let's talk about Leeds. What makes it worth a visit? Leeds, located in West Yorkshire, is a vibrant city that blends history, culture, and a thriving shopping scene. The city is home to stunning architectural gems like the Leeds Town Hall and the Victorian Quarter, which houses boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. Leeds is also known for its cultural institutions like the Leeds Art Gallery and the Royal Armouries Museum. And let's not forget the city's vibrant nightlife and the buzzing Leeds Festival, one of the UK's premier music events. Leeds seems like a hidden gem with a lot to offer. Well, that wraps up our exploration of the largest cities and towns in the UK. FD Capital are the leader when it comes to FD and CFO Recruitment.

In 1923, African American author Jean Toomer published the novel Cane. It wasn’t a best seller at the time but is now held as a modernist classic and a central work of The Harlem Renaissance. A new radio adaptation is to be broadcast on Radio 4. We speak to playwright Janice Okoh and score composer, soul singer Carleen Anderson. Today is Bloomsday, when Dubliners celebrate James Joyce’s Ulysses, the novel about Irish newspaper advertising salesman Leopold Bloom wandering round the city. As Ireland is emerging from lockdown events are moving online and for Zoomsday actor Seán Doyle is MC-ing a Joycean Punk Cabaret with an alternative presentation of extracts, songs, poems as well as Joyce’s saucier love letters. Seán joins us from Dublin just before the event begins. Lockdown came quickly and affected arts organisations around the country with barely any warning. Venues closed their doors and hung up the “closed until further notice” signs. But what’s happening behind the closed doors? We speak to Joanna Meacock from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow and Anna Renton from Penlee House in Penzance. For one week only Alison Brackenbury is Front Row’s poet in residence. The colsure of museums during Coronavirus has inspired Alison to write new poems about some of those she has visited. Every day this week we will be hearing one of her Museums Unlocked poems. In today’s Alison takes us to Aghanistan via a painting in the Museum of Somerset in Taunton Castle. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Julian May Studio Manager: John Boland

Follow Sally Coffey on Instagram and Twitter or see what she's up to on her website sallycoffeywrites.com. TIPS FOR VISITING SCOTLAND Edinburgh is a must see when visiting Scotland. The West Coast of Scotland is another great area to visit, with the Isle of Skye being the most dramatic. Scotland can get quite crowded in the summer months, but the weather is also the nicest. Places like the Isle of Skye is best to visit in the summer, whereas Edinburgh you can enjoy year round. If you are visiting Edinburgh in August, keep in mind that you will be competing for hotel rooms and in lines for attractions with those attending the Fringe Festival.  Keep that in mind when you are planning your trip. Edinburgh is the ideal spot to start your trip. The city has lot to offer, with a medieval feel and cobblestone roads of Old Town, as well the gardens and buildings of New Town. Plan on spending at least three days in Edinburgh. The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are the ideal time to visit to avoid the crowds. New Town in Edinburgh has a lot of museums and galleries that you can explore. If you like J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, there are quite a few locations in Old Town that seem to have inspired characters/locations of the books. Including the Greyfriars Kirkyard which is a graveyard where some of the characters may have been inspired from. Edinburgh is very walkable and pretty. There are taxis and other transportation, but that can get pretty expensive. Glasgow offers loads of great museums and a lot of outdoor areas, which comes in handy if you have younger kids that like to run around outside. The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is really great and right outside there is a nice green area to have a picnic after exploring the museum. Traveling by train is a great way to get around Scotland and it is not too expensive. The Jacobite steam train is the train that the train in the Harry Potter films was based off of along with the track it takes. If you can get a ride on that train you will see some really fantastic views. The Isle of Skye has really fantastic views and natural beauty. You can take a train there but then you will need to rent a car to explore. The island has some great hikes where you can walk for a long time without seeing anyone. If you would like, you can catch a short boat trip to see dolphins or even to the other smaller islands nearby. You should really spend at least 3 days on the Isle of Skye or you might miss things if you are rushing around trying to see everything. If you can, you should try to stay a week to really get to explore the whole island. There are some areas that you will need exact change when you are buying anything so do exchange some dollars for British pounds. Don’t be afraid to talk to locals. They can have some really great insight into spots to visit. Keep an open mind and don't be afraid to take a look at some suggestions. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Sally loves to wear jeans along with her hiking boots. She also likes to keep a waterproof jacket handy for when she is walking around outside in Scotland! “THE BEAST MUST OCH AYE MAIR LIKE IT!” With The Family Beast busy pitching a Netflix series to cash in on the ecstatic reactions to Mini-Beast’s debut vocal track, and Illogical Volume hunched over an inter-dimensional toilet seat with time to kill, today is the day where we get to find out whether SILENCE! can survive a sudden influx of vile Northern nationalism! It’s also the day where Illogical Volume gets himself banned from the nationalist dance party and for Dundee for mistakenly saying “Glaswegian” when he means “Scottish”, but no one ever said access to the Reviewniverse came cheap! Who is the nicest Mindless? A hint: he’s not on this podcast! Since he’s mysteriously lacking in sponsorship deals from Dave’s Comics of Brighton, Illogical Volume takes a punt on his local library instead. Somehow this devolves into Mssrs Lactus and Volume blethering on about how dead relatives can give you totally meaningless power – a “redeeming fart” is also mentioned but not heard. In a section that he didn’t remember to call SILENCE! at the Art Gallery, Mr Volume enthuses about the Frank Quitely: The Art of Comics exhibition currently running at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow and recommends that SILENCE! listeners from all dimensions take the opportunity to really immerse themselves in all those footery wee lines and brilliant panel layouts. After that’s done with the boyce head over to the Reviewniverse for a nice wee trudge through the wheat fields of comics. Shirtless Bearfighter, Shaolin Cowboy, Stray Bullets, Kathryn Briggs’ Magpie and Triskelion (which you should totally buy!), Al Ewing’s Ultimates 2 (which Illogical Volume should totally read!), Douglas Noble’s The Dreadful Work and After The Sessions (with Sean Azzopardi), Helena Crash, Justice League of Captain America and more. In “I Recky-Mend” Mssrs Lactus and Volume somehow manage to spoil the plot of the new Bladerunner movie without even seeing it, and Mr Volume gibbers on about Darkcell’s Nightmare Document part 1, which he totally didn’t buy after seeing John Darnielle big it up the other day…
