The 6 Nations is over and it was another fantastic tournament. Super Saturday dealt up three very decent games - all going to form! As usual, I got a load of special guests to discuss everything that happened. For France vs Scotland - I spoke with Bruce Aitchison - a frustrated but proud Scotsman.  For Wales vs England - I spoke with Huw Jones and we discussed England's record win against Wales. But we start with Italy vs Ireland where I spoke with Simon Elkinson who was in a reflective mood following the culmination of another amazing tournament. A VOIR ABSOLUMENT ! Round one is done and dusted and how good is it to have the Six Nations back on our screens?! England showed some promise in the first half against Ireland, but a second-half fight back saw the hosts turn things around in Dublin—what went wrong for Borthwick's men, and how did Ireland's bench make the difference? Scotland made hard work of it against Italy but eventually pulled away, with Huw Jones stepping up in Tuipulotu's absence. Meanwhile, France absolutely dismantled Wales in Paris—are they the team to beat this year, and are we seeing any real signs of improvement from Gatland's side? We'll be breaking it all down, looking ahead to round two, and answering your listener questions—including which past England player could turn things around and which players put their hands up for each team in the first round of action. There's a great sale on right now so jump on over! What a treat we have for you all this week. We're joined by none other than Scotland Centre and purveyor extraordinaire of tries Huw Jones.Huw takes through the triple meat pie and the “it's happening again” moment when Italy drew level at 19-19. But there's a new found resilience to the Scots and ultimately they did everything they needed to do to pick up the 5 points. First banana skin avoided! We hear Huw's thoughts on what's going on inside the Scotland camp but also have a chance to beat his wild journey to the top. Some real sliding doors moments that might never have seen the dynamo Midas centre hit the highs of winning the URC or winning over 50 caps for his country. And what about the other games?Close and no cigar seems to be a recurring theme for England but this was more comprehensive. Beaten soundly by the Green machine. Ireland showing no signs of being Dads army actually accelerating through the gears in the latter stages. Ireland vs France sure promises to be an absolute blockbuster. But what of the English? What does Steve Borthwick do? all questions wonderfully answered by the boys.We also go through the Wales nadir against France in Paris. Rarely has there been a more one sided game in recent years in the six nations. What can Warren Gatland do?France through purring like a well oiled machine despite injuries and a very callow side they blew the Welsh away!We also hear from the lads Max gives us his take on being destroyed by an almost entire Wallaby side as Bristol are taught a heavy lesson against the Queensland Reds. Silver lining though… Max scored a try! It's another blast with the boys enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Definitely a contender for coolest enterprise on the podcast so far, despite its non-profit status. Not because it's particularly high tech, and not because of the numbers of people impacted, even though the potential is huge. I like it for it's philosophy and, on one level, simplicity. Here's a problem causing a lot of unnecessary suffering, and here's a solution. But Virtual Doctors' ultimate aim is to pass on the expertise and knowhow of (currently) UK doctors to clinicians in remote parts of Africa, so that they become self-sufficient. So the impact is contagious and enduring. Huw Jones and I went to school together way back in the day, and I'm delighted to have reconnected for this interview.. It's reawakened my love of Africa while also reminding us all of the serious problems much of the continent faces. Huw has had an enviably-interesting career to date, but of course not without its challenges. He's done a phenomenal job of building a meaningful and sustainable social platform by inspiring people in both the UK and Africa into action, with the support of the board of trustees. Virtual Doctors is a UK charity whose mission has been focused on Zambia and is now being recognised or piloted in other countries in sub Saharan Africa. And there's even interest in deploying the tech in the UK - which would be a real breakthrough. What the business really needs is substantial and regular funding from benefactors who really want to help Virtual Doctors achieve its full potential. I'd love to facilitate that by bringing this fantastic charity to wider attention, so please share this episode as far as you can! Thanks! www.virtualdoctors.org

Your London Legacy

Shoreditch in the East End of London has an incredibly rich and varied history. From theatre and Shakespeare in Elizabethan times, to the wealthy traders and French Huguenot silk weavers of the 17th Century to the decline of the furniture industry in the late 19th century when the area was one of the worst slums in London. The illustrated London News in 1863 described the terrible living conditions in the 'Old Nichol' as ‘one painful and monotonous round of vice, filth and poverty, huddled in dark cellars…teeming with disease and death’’. Today, Shoreditch must be one of the trendiest and most fashionable places in London and this is the location of today’ guest excellent recent book ‘The Last Director of Shoreditch’. Huw Jones day job is Europe Regulation Correspondent at Thomson Reuters and he’s never known such fascinating times with the advent of Brexit and Covid 19 back to back. But as lover of London and social historian, Huw’s fast-paced novel spins between the Postie gang of Shoreditch in the 1950’s and what he calls the modern day siliconeaster, latte sipping tech start up millennials. Enjoy this fascinating insight into one of the jewels of London past and present. This is Your London Legacy. “You’re just like 2 degrees removed from history wherever you go here. It’s amazing.” 21:25 Huw’s book follows a group along two parallel timelines: the 1950’s when one of the characters, Frank who was the fixer for the Postie group—and the timeline now after the property empire has risen and they get a bit bored and try and ditch what they worked for. Many of the details in the book were based off of the reality of Shoreditch. For instance, in the 50’s and 60’s Shoreditch was an epicentre of furniture production—and the Director uses the industry there for their deeds, after all, old warehouses are indeed a good place to start your criminal fraternity. 26:16 Shoreditch was likely the first municipality in Britain to have a “dust destructor” which is essentially a facility to burn rubbish to create electricity. The facility in Shoreditch is now the National Arts Centre for Circus, interestingly enough. But again, what better place to “fix” a problem than a facility meant to incinerate—again as Huw says, you don’t even have to make it up.  “You realize it’s not going to get written until you sit down and do it.” 30:45 I’m always fascinated by the creative type and how books come to be. Huw’s style is interesting, as he didn’t quite write the chapters in order – and he felt his character Frank took over the story. But it is a push and requires sacrificing perfection. But it is an all-consuming task and one you must embrace when it wakes you up in the early morning with some sliver of idea you have to jot down. The concept of siliconeaster too is inspired by going out in Shoreditch and seeing the hip young millennial tech startupers with their lattes and how they’ve influenced the area in modern day. While a book is most certainly written in a chair, the ideas often come from going out and exploring the world—and what better locale to influence you than London and the wonderful, never ending microcosms within. The lads discuss Ireland's performance against Wales and whether Garry Ringrose is the right player to replace the injured Chris Farrell. After Jacob Stockdale improved his try-scoring record to eight in seven tests, Will asks Luke about his own try-scoring record and whether the ability to cross the whitewash is a skill. England's stuttering display against Scotland, Wales' cause for optimism and Huw Jones' potential is also up for discussion.
