Ricky's career journey started as a teenager in Kennywood's food and beverage department, selling hot sausages and hot dogs. This early role ignited a passion for food that would shape his career. After gaining experience at Idlewild and Sandcastle Waterpark, where he also led a multimillion-dollar rebranding project, Ricky returned to his roots at Kennywood, bringing full circle a lifelong connection to the park. In this interview, Ricky talks about treating every interaction like an interview, keeping history in every decision, and the Potato Patch Fries secret menu. Treating Every Interaction Like an Interview  "You have to treat every interaction as if it's an interview. No matter what... you're putting your best foot forward, you're selling yourself, you're selling your passion."   Ricky emphasized the importance of always being "on," whether interacting with consultants, park guests, or colleagues from other parks. He learned early in his career that these interactions build reputation and recognition. This mindset helped him grow from an entry-level food service role to becoming a general manager. Persistence and passion were key, as he constantly sought to be visible to leadership while maintaining a genuine love for the park and industry. Ricky's philosophy underscores the importance of professionalism in even the smallest encounters. History in Every Decision “Our history is in every decision we make, no matter what. Every project we do, we're thinking about the history of Kennywood."   At Kennywood, a park steeped in 126 years of history, every decision honors its past. Ricky spoke about how projects, whether a new ride or renovations, are always made with consideration for Kennywood's legacy. He shared examples like the installation of a modern ride that paid homage to the long-gone Swing Around, and the creation of Jeter's Pub, a nod to a mascot from the 1970s, which doubles as a museum filled with park memorabilia. This commitment to blending the old with the new ensures Kennywood remains relevant to both nostalgic long-time visitors and younger generations. The Potato Patch Fries Secret Menu “If you're feeling a little excited, you go, I just say like a tablespoon, that's all you need, of the gravy... the hidden way to do it."   Ricky shared his personal favorite way to enjoy Kennywood's famous Potato Patch Fries—seasoned salt, cheese, bacon, and just a tablespoon of gravy. This combination, he explains, adds a subtle richness without overwhelming the dish. Although this unique twist isn't officially on the menu, Ricky humorously suggests it could be considered part of a "secret menu." His love for food and attention to small details shine through as he shares this insider tip with pride.     To learn more about Kennywood, visit www.kennywood.com. The podcast delved into the remarkable journey and ongoing success of Primanti Bros., a renowned restaurant known for its iconic sandwiches since 1933. Golomb shared valuable insights, shedding light on the brand's expansion, virtual brands, technology integration, and his personal experiences.Primanti Bros., now celebrating its 90th anniversary, began its journey in Pittsburgh back in 1933. Today, the chain has grown significantly, with 41 open restaurants across four states and four more under construction, projecting 45 locations by year-end. Golomb emphasized the brand's fame, owing to its signature sandwich: a combination of choice meats, coleslaw, French fries, tomato, and provolone cheese, all packed between two fresh-baked Italian bread slices. When discussing how Primanti Bros. ensures its long-standing brand remains attractive and relevant, Golomb emphasized the importance of staying true to their core identity while expanding the menu to cater to a broader audience. In addition to their renowned sandwiches, the restaurant now offers freshly baked New York-style pizza, spicy wings, salads, and burgers, acknowledging the diverse preferences of their customers. Golomb also highlighted their digital-first approach, utilizing technology to drive the business and adapting rapidly during the pandemic.During the podcast, Golomb highlighted Primanti Bros. introduction of three virtual brands—18th Street Pizza, Wing Nut, and Get Loaded. These concepts diversify the menu and have become top-selling items alongside the famous sandwiches. The hosts inquired about the performance and demand for these virtual brands, to which Golomb expressed the positive response from consumers. However, he also acknowledged the challenges posed by third-party delivery companies, which often resist including virtual brands on their platforms. Golomb emphasized the need to find solutions that maintain sales and navigate the evolving landscape of the delivery market. The conversation also touched upon Primanti Bros. limited-time offerings (LTOs), which occur every six to eight weeks. These LTOs introduce new cycles of culinary creations, keeping the menu fresh and exciting. While they previously experimented with monthly LTOs, operational challenges led them to adjust the frequency to ensure smooth supply chain management. Adam Golomb unveiled the current LTO at Primanti Bros., Hot Honey. This unique and enticing offering further exemplifies the brand's commitment to innovation and delighting their customers with distinct flavors.Additionally, Golomb shared breaking news during the podcast, announcing Primanti Bros. first-ever amusement park location at Pittsburgh's renowned Kennywood Park. He expressed the brand's excitement about the venture, which involves remodeling an existing concession stand to celebrate both Primanti Bros. 90th year and Kennywood Park's 125th anniversary. The conversation also touched upon Primanti Bros. strategic use of technology and their commitment to being a digital-first company. Golomb discussed their complex tech stack and the importance of selecting best-in-breed solutions that integrate seamlessly with their existing systems. The goal is to enhance sales, improve guest experiences, and streamline operations. The CEO emphasized their openness to exploring new technologies and evaluating their impact on driving sales and benefiting the team and customers.Golomb further engaged in the segment of the podcast, where “Two Truths and a Lie” about his past were shared. Schatzberg and Frischling made their guesses, so be sure to tune into this episode to get the answer. On this episode of the Steel City Nation podcast I’ll interview “Pittsburgh Dad” Curt Wootton. Wootton’s inspiration for his character of “Pittsburgh Dad” came from his own father while growing up in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. While working on the set from a previous series called “Mercury Men”, Curt would do his impression of his father by “yelling” at the cast members focusing on insignificant things like a western Pennsylvanian father would. The premise for the show was to highlight growing up in the PIttsburgh area and how you were raised and was only intended for those who had a close tie to Curt and his friends originally. Once word caught on about “Pittsburgh Dad” around the globe and people could make the clear connection between their father and Curt’s character, his celebrity, “Pittsburgh Dad”, escalated. With millions of views and thousands of subscribers on Youtube, Curt has created a brand that connects generations of Pittsburghers. We will talk with Curt about growing up in Pittsburgh, raising his family, being a fan of the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers. He will talk about his experiences with local lore around Pittsburgh including restaurants, Kennywood Park and of course Pittsburgh’s very own, Mr. Rogers. The ride will be open on their campus from April 12-14, 2019 for CMU's annual Spring Carnival with free admission. The Old Mill is a new spin on the classic ride, taking guests on a journey through a CMU building that has been transformed into “a museum of steel worker history that was erected in a 20th-century steel mill”. Guests will board tour vehicles with a guide that will walk them through the ins and outs of steel production. Along the way, guests will have exciting encounters with blast furnaces, industrial machinery, and other relics of Pittsburgh's past! Kennywood's Oldest Ride The Old MIll opened at Pittsburgh's Kennywood Park in 1901. It was a slow, “tunnel-of-love” boat ride through spooky scenes. Eventually, The Old Mill was rethemed into Garfield's Nightmare, based on the eponymous orange cat in the comics, to mixed reception from guests. The ride still remains Kennywood's oldest ride, but its conversion into Garfield's Nightmare spawned several petitions for restoration to its original theme, garnering tens of thousands of signatures. To this day, The Old Mill is beloved by Piitsburghers who remember its campy brand of fun. Carnegie Mellon's “Fungineers” Carnegie Mellon University is known for its academic prowess and emphasis on interdisciplinary education. Roly Garcia, a junior in Information Systems and long-time Disney fanatic, had dreamt of building a real ride his whole life. He soon discovered that one of his team members had begun the Theme Park Engineering Group club, full of students also looking to achieve their dreams in the theme park industry. The two groups merged their manpower to make Garcia's idea a possibility. History Reborn With their newfound members, the team began brainstorming ideas for their ride, which would be the first fully-functional ride built by students in the entire world. Garcia and his “fungineering” group searched left and right for their inspiration, which eventually came from their local amusement park, Kennywood. To show their love for the rich history and culture of Pittsburgh, the team chose the classic boat ride as the frame for their story. They would add a rich story to The Old Mill by bringing guests into the fictional Garfield Steel Works Museum, which told the story of the people who worked the (also fictional) Garfield Steel Works during its golden age. The museum intends to begin its grand opening with a new, automated guided tour system. However, the system seems to be acting haywire when guests decide to board, sending them on an exhilarating journey through the old mill. Once they had their concept, Garcia (now the official director of the project) went to work acquiring approvals and funding. Within several weeks, Garcia went from having a team of five to having full funding, university approval, and even an official state ride inspector! Be sure to visit The Old Mill when it is open, April 12-14, 2019!

Creative Director Scott Simmons and Katie “Dudders” head to Kennywood to chat with their Director of Public Relations and Social Media, Nick Paradise. They discuss year round marketing of seasonal businesses, innovating while remembering your roots, the value of engaged fan base, and Pittsburghers’ unique bond with Kennywood Park. Operating a seasonal business now requires year round marketing. Kennywood is adding a new daytime Halloween attraction, Happy Hauntings. Running a business is like running a household, you may want to add a big addition, but you still have to pay the bills. Amusement parks are known as much for their food as their rides. Kennywood was founded in 1898, the park officially opened in 1899. Balancing nostalgia with the contemporary in a theme park. Innovating while remembering your roots. The value of an engaged fan base. Pittsburghers feel a unique bond with Kennywood which is both a blessing and a curse. Kennywood has one of last running Noah’s Ark fun house in the world. Nick talks about it’s renovation and bringing back the squishy tongue. Nick and Dudders appreciate their super fans on social media. New things at Kennywood this summer: Lego Movie 4D (highly recommended by Nick, Scott, and Dudders), VR on Sky Rocket, and Potato Patch poutine. The guys had planned on producing a regular show this week, but Mike came down with a pretty bad case of the flu. So, after some thought, they decided to enlist the help of Clint Novak from The Coaster Crew and dig out an episode of the show that has never been heard on our podcast feed before! Let me explain.... Back in 2007, after Coaster Radio 1.0 had gone off the air, Mike, Flava and Mario formed a team to compete in the first ever "Single Riders Marathon" at Kennywood Park. Now, the marathon had nothing to do with being single.  Instead, it meant that each marathon rider would fill an empty seat on a coaster and complete as many laps as possible during the day. People would then pledge a certain amount of money for every coaster lap counted. As part of this event, Flava , Mario and Mike produced an episode of "The Coaster Crew's Guide to the Midway" on-location at the park. We thought this show was lost forever, but Will Holder was able to dig it up out of the archives this week! So, since Mike is sick, we decided to play this show for the first time ever on OUR podcast. For all of you who have missed Flava and Mario... this one's for you. For all of you who have missed Flava and Mario... this one's for you.
