Why can't my dog live as long as me?

As we enter our teenage years, many of us feel like life is just getting started. But for dogs, celebrating a ‘teen' birthday is a sign of old age, entering a phase when things start slowing down. Listener Susan was besotted with her beloved corgi Copper John and wants to know why our furry companions rarely live as long as us. We investigate what accounts for the huge differences in lifespans across animal species. From fish that live a few weeks, to sharks who can survive for 500 years, what are the factors that affect the ticking on our biological clocks? Central to this field is the idea of ‘live fast, die young', with some animals burning more quickly through their ‘life fuel'. But is this rate set in stone?Presenter Anand Jagatia find out how animals' growth, reproduction and anti-ageing methods contribute to the length of their survival. Dr Kevin Healy, a macroecologist at the University of Galway, discusses some of these theories, explaining how the dangers and luxuries faced by animals during their evolution shape their speed of life. One example of extreme slow living is the Greenland Shark. John Fleng Steffensen, Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Copenhagen, describes how he helped figure out how old they really are, and how their cold living quarters increase their lifespan. Alessandro Cellerino, physiologist at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, finds the key to the sharks' longevity in their DNA.Anand also goes on a hunt on the west coast of Ireland for a creature that lives fast but surprisingly, dies old. Noel Fahy, research student at the University of Galway, is his guide, while Dr Nicole Foley, Associate Research Scientist at Texas A&M University, reveals the life-extending secrets of this creature. And geneticist Trey Ideker, Professor at the University of California San Diego, busts the myth that one dog year is seven human years. But how much is this misconception off by?Presenter: Anand Jagatia Producer: Julia Ravey Content Editor: Cathy Edwards Studio Manager: Sarah Hockley Production Coordinator: Ishmael Soriano(Photo: Copper John the Welsh Pembrokeshire Corgi, by listener Susan)

Trending extinctions: How do we react when we hear of animal becoming extinct?

On hearing the news of Lonesome George's death, the last Pinta Island tortoise, most people are likely to think it is sad and noteworthy news. But do we really care? As the world experiences what experts describe as the sixth mass extinction researchers have studied how people react to the news of animals, such as Lonesome George, disappearing from the planet for good. The team, led by University of Galway in collaboration with UCD and Maynooth University, turned to big data and the world of culturomics to measure how we react to the demise of animals and plants and whether we mourn their loss or if we are numb to the effects. The full study has been published in the journal Animal Conservation and is available here. Dr Kevin Healy, School of Natural Sciences and the Ryan Institute at University of Galway, said, "Culturomics is an approach where we gather large amounts of online data to understand cultural patterns. In our study we tracked changes in tweets, and Wikipedia page visits before and after the extinction of eight species ranging from Lonesome George, the last Pinta Island tortoise, to more obscure species such as the bean snail." The research team analysed data of more than two million Wikipedia page visits and more than 100,000 tweets and retweets on Twitter between 2007 and 2023, relating to eight species now extinction species including the Pinta Giant Tortoise; the Christmas Island Whiptail-skink; the Bramble Cay Mosaic-tailed Rat; the Alagoas Foliage-gleaner; Captain Cook's Bean Snail; the Oahu Treesnail; the Rabb's fringe-limbed treefrog and the West African black rhinoceros, to test if people increased engagement after the extinction and how global it was. By measuring interactions on both X and visits to Wikipedia, the researchers were able to gauge how people engage with the more immediate world of social media in comparison to the expected slower paced world of an online encyclopaedia. The study showed that while tweets, retweets and posts on X relating to a species increased after its extinction, this was only a short-lived phenomenon. In contrast, visits to Wikipedia pages relating to an extinction had longer lasting engagement. Dr Susan Canavan, School of Natural Sciences, University of Galway and lead author on the study, said, "Overall, we found that people mentioned a species on twitter more often directly after its extinction, however this increase was quite short lived. However, when we looked at Wikipedia page visits the increase in page visits after an extinction was sustained for far longer." The researchers also found that the most commonly used words are strongly associated with sadness and that for a brief moment even those relatively obscure species found in highly localised parts of the world are mourned across the globe. Dr Canavan added, "Overall, it does look like people care and are saddened by the news of extinction. We see words like 'RIP' and 'lost' commonly appear, and that the location of tweets expand from close to the species range, to across the globe after extinction." However, while people display a sense of caring on hearing news of extinction, where they hear it from, or how they hear it, was found to be an important driver in how they engage with it. The researchers found that a small cohort of "influencers" drive the majority of engagement on X. For example, engagement on X after the extinction of the West African black rhinoceros were heavily influenced by posts from the comedian Ricky Gervais. And while people respond to the news of extinction on mainstream media, there was no noticeable increase in engagement or page visits associated with official extinction announcements from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Dr Healy said, "From a conservation point of view, these results show that we can do better in communicating species extinction by more clearly linking in with media outlets and engaging with particular parts of social media. According to our unscientific office poll, the annual changing of the clocks has all the popularity of a root canal. With few exceptions, people described the shift to and from Daylight Saving Time as disorienting, arbitrary, and unwelcome. On a more existential level, winding the clocks back and forth reminds us that no matter how concrete minutes and hours may feel, the way we perceive time is fluid. Time flies when you're having fun. A watched pot never boils. So to celebrate (or perhaps protest) another year setting back the clocks, the Outside/In team has uncovered four mini-stories that will poke at, stretch, or even obliterate your perception of time. From “time expansion experiences,” to time-space synesthesia, to the slow-motion life of a fly, prepare for a totally different type of time warp.Featuring Steve Taylor, Rhitu Chatterjee, Kevin Healy, Katherine Akey, and Patricia Lynne Duffy.

Former iOS developer Kevin Healy first found fame when he released a video on YouTube called “What is Ethereum?” Published in 2016, in the video, Kevin shows developers how to build on the Ethereum blockchain. Despite thousands of views and some revenue he received from the video, Kevin removed it from his YouTube channel as he was worried about some of the dodgy ads that appeared alongside it. It is now back on the channel, clearly labelled as out of date and “posted for historical purposes”.   Kevin is now part of the education team at the Bitcoin Association, a non-profit organization that aims to advocate and support the adoption of BSV blockchain technology worldwide. As he tells Charles Miller on this week's episode of CoinGeek Conversations, his more general concerns about Ethereum grew after the spat between Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin and Dr. Craig Wright broke out in 2018 at the Deconomy Conference. In the midst of the controversy, Kevin felt the need  to “pick a side”. Then he release another successful video. Again, it received thousands of views. But this time, Kevin explains why he believes Dr Craig Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto. Despite anticipating some negative responses, Kevin went on to defend the man he believes to be the inventor of Bitcoin.    At the start of his developer career, Kevin created apps for Apple's App Store. His exposure to investments and technology while growing up led him to a career in technology: “My dad is a wealth advisor - a portfolio manager - and so I've always been comfortable trading stocks. Part of the reason I was obsessed with Apple is because we bought a lot of Apple stock when I was young,” he says. Kevin remembers owning his very first iPhone in high school and thinking “how do I learn to program this thing?” This thought process eventually led him to focus his studies on computer science. Kevin says that his early obsession to Silicon Valley success stories drove him to use the same business model as Facebook and Snapchat while building apps. Looking back, he says “it was a silly thing to do.”As the app industry evolved, Kevin realized the chances of making millions as a single developer became slim to none. As he explains, “in those early days there were people that were making millions as a single developer but as the app platform matured, then it was more companies and you needed venture capital, and the labor for building apps became really expensive.”At present, Kevin speaks of the advantages of Bitcoin technology based on what is written in the Bitcoin White Paper. At the recent London Blockchain Conference, Kevin focused on how to solve problems using Bitcoin. As he points out, the ability of Bitcoin to do micropayments solves many issues we encounter on the Internet today: “If you want to do small casual payments, then you can't do that with a trusted third party because they have to be able to reverse the transactions and they have fees. It's just too expensive to do it that way. If we want to do micropayments, then we need to get rid of it [third-party involvement] or we need a model without them.”  Kevin refers to a valuable takeaway he got from one of Dr Wright's interviews where the nChain Chief Scientist spoke about mercantilism. After watching the interview several times, Kevin says he realized that “money comes second, it's the goods and services that really is the wealth of society.” He relates this form of economic policy to the Bitcoin economy saying “money gets people's attention and the fact that the other tokens have gotten so much money, they've gotten so much attention and there's something sad about that, but at the same time too, it's also been a great filtering mechanism because now everybody inte

City Limits this week pays tribute to and explores the legacy of Union leader Jack Mundey, who died on Sunday 10th May 2020, aged 90.Mundey was the state secretary of the NSW Builders and Labourers Federation in the 1970s, during which time the union implemented 40 green bans - a type of strike where members would not work on projects it viewed as socially or environmentally destructive.City Limits hosts Kevin Healy and Meg Kimber are joined by guest Dave Sweeney from the Australian Conservation Foundation to dive deeply into the ways workers struggles have, and still do, intersect with environmental action and other issues of community, equality and empowerment. Kevin Healey, who knew Mundey personally, said “Jack played a key role, not just in that environmental consideration, but also, the union itself under Jack broadened out incredibly - it became a supporter of gay rights, it became a supporter of women’s rights, it fought to get women into the industry”Dave Sweeney noted that Mundey was a former vice-president of the Australian Conservation Foundation and “a very long-term and very active NSW counsellor because he saw that as an important next step to the industrial activity and action that he and the BLF took under his leadership to protect, and make, living cities.”
