Leon Lolishvili a.k.a. Boyd Schidt is a pioneering Georgian electronic producer and DJ, better known as a half of the long-running techno duo Greenbeam & Leon As a solo artist, Boyd Schidt's career dates to 2010, with releases on Sonic Groove, KHIDI, Front Record, Mo's Ferry, Emote Music etc. In 2014, he released "Mornig Utopia" as a part of Studio R°'s "Various 003", alongside Mike Parker, Brendon Moeller, Zadig, Exercise One, followed by next 12", "Structure EP" on Waveform. Emerging as Phase Fatale in 2014, Berlin-based DJ, producer and label owner, Hayden Payne is rewriting the discourse of Techno with his cross-pollination of gnarly basslines, sensual narratives and mind-control mechanics. Demonstrating his vision through an authentic, highly curated sonic-lens of techno, Payne's rhythmic excursions draw on both his roots in the New York and Berlin underground as well as his reputable experience performing to dancefloors globally. Exemplified by long-standing tenures as a resident for esteemed institutions such as Berghain as well as KHIDI in Georgia's capital Tbilisi, Payne demonstrates a resolute understanding of harnessing club synergy across his productions and DJ sets.  With three full length albums under his belt, including the 2020 sophomore release ‘Scanning Backwards' on Berghain's Ostgut Ton, Payne's sonic signature pushes the boundaries of techno sensibilities and reflects the zeitgeist whilst staying true to his own vision. Wasting no time since his solo project's inception to showcase his expert sonic ability, Payne has toured globally performing at renowned clubs and festivals worldwide, releasing numerous records on labels including Jealous God, Ostgut Ton, and his own label BITE.  Payne co-launched the BITE imprint in 2018 as a means to platform cutting-edge sound production across a diverse roster of international artists. "Dancing is never just dancing." The Tbilisi-based DJ talks about nightlife politics, the Left Bank collective and Eastern European club culture live from ICKPA Festival. Tbilisi has been experiencing a club music renaissance over the last few years, with clubs like Bassiani and Khidi opening their doors to top tier DJs from around the world and simultaneously heralding an era of world class nightlife. While techno has reigned supreme at these venues, they left a gap that the relatively new space, Left Bank, has aimed to fill. Opening in 2021, it's provided a platform for what it calls "wildly diverse electronic sounds" beyond four-to-the-floor, and it's kicking off its new record label with a thirteen-track V/A, "Stop What You're Doing," this week. Ash Scholem has been a member of the Left Bank collective and social space since its inception, and in this episode of the RA Exchange recorded live at ICKPA Festival—an event co-run by contingents from the Georgian and Ukrainian dance music communities—he speaks with the Exchange's senior producer, Chloe Lula, about his involvement with the venue. He also brings his background in political science and sociology to bear, shedding light on how Eastern European socioeconomics affect nightlife; the ways in which revolutionary ideals have become ingrained into Georgian nightlife culture and how people party; the fight for queer rights and drug policy reform in Tbilisi and broader thoughts on the role dance music plays in politics and legislative change during times of crisis. Today's premiere features Dutch duo Abstract Division with their track ‘Graveyard Shift' from their debut album, Midnight Ensemble. The full album is expected to release on September 23rd. Featuring a host of Detroit and dub techno, alongside some ambient and electro sounds too for good measure. Paul Boex and Dave Miller boast over 30 years of experience under their belt within the music industry. The Abstract Division duo are seasoned DJs and music producers who have played in the likes of Berghain, Tresor, Shelter and KHIDI over the course of their music partnership. Those who have followed the duo since their early days of playing DJ-sets together, know that it's hard to define their style anywhere beyond techno or even electronic music, as it is ever evolving and always dependent on the time of the day or night. When listening to this album, the resemblance between their unpredictable selection behind the decks and the eclectic range of subgenres on this album is more obvious than ever before. ‘Midnight Ensemble' could be interpreted as an ode to nightlife; a reminiscence of all that happens between dusk and dawn, captured and compressed into about one hour of music. An hour in which they so delicately time their changing of styles and tempos, always reading the room and always being one step ahead of the crowd. Graveyard Shift consists of experimental breaks and is accompanied with eerie undertones to keep the listener guessing. Extracting such a dark and murky energy that can be felt throughout the recording, concluding with an all-nighter vibe. The uplifting upheaval towards the end makes you feel a sense of satisfaction, yet flustered at the same time and eager for more. Our first premiere of the week comes from Ctrls on DJ Stingray's imprint, Micron Audio. Ctrls experiments electro and bass heavy tracks on this release to great effect. The Danish producer unpicks the deepening complexity brought on by our pervasive digital lives. The Ctrls project came to life in 2012 and the Danish artist immediately made his mark on the techno scene. His fast paced and futuristic techno based sound has now been well established with a stream of respected music on labels such as Token Records, Earwiggle, and Key Vinyl. The Danish artist has held it down at a number of high-profile venues throughout the world, including Tresor, Fold, Berghain, Khidi, Fabric, Kit Kat, Fold, and Club Drugstore, as well as a residency at Ved Siden Af, Copenhagen's purest electronic dance music club. For his next release the formidable techno artist releases on DJ Stingray's imprint Micron Audio as it opens its doors to an external artist for the first time. Across four tracks, the Danish producer unravels a dark and funky electro core, taking inspiration from the rapidly intertwining codependence between technology and society. As digital twins, metaverses or humanoid robots lodge themselves deeper into our surroundings, Ctrls unpicks the deepening complexity brought on by our pervasive digital lives. Encouraged by Micron Audio boss Stingray to delve into the darker productions as a means of exploring a contemporary electro sound, Ctrls fixes a hypnotic heft with fresh industrial sound. ‘Subroutines' is a dark and heavy bass exploration, as Ctrls experiments with sub heavy drums and glitchy synths. Having been involved with Regal's Irish debut back in 2016, five years later we see the producer thriving in the dance scene, with countless releases, his own label, remixes, club shows and festival appearances, to now releasing his debut album. Regal’s genre-bending sound has been capturing the hearts and minds of ravers and industry heads since 2012. His staunch productions have garnered support from techno’s well-established vanguard, including noted collaborations, projects and remixes with Amelie Lens, Hadone, Nina Kraviz, Ellen Allien, Emmanuel Top and Len Faki. Regal’s sound graces clubland with full-throttle impact – whether at the legendary Berghain, Awakenings, Possession or his residency at Khidi in Tibilisi. Alongside his own productions, Regal’s imprint Involve has become established for delivering sharpened 303 infused acid sounds. The imprint has welcomed artists including Boston 168, FJAAK and Alignment and is now also the home for his debut album this June. “The concept has changed a few times over the past few years” says Regal. Christoph Heinze, better known as Inhalt der Nacht joins us for our next exclusive Home of Sound podcast. Berlin-born, his sound has been shaped by influences from cold wave and new wave, blended seamlessly with elements of the rock music that he was exposed to in his younger days. Having already established his name as one of the most progressive DJ’s in his genre, Christoph has pioneered his own label: Lebendig from which he pushes fellow Dj’s and artists’ productions alongside his own. 2019 saw Christoph’s track “Dosis'' spread through the underground scene of Berlin like wildfire after it appeared on the compilation album “The World of Monom Black” put out by the illustrious Dax J and his eponymous label . Christoph’s eminence nowadays has granted him residency to some of the biggest clubs across Germany including Griessmühle Berlin, Khidi Tbilisi and Rote Sonne Munich In this chat Christoph talks us through his experiences playing and producing techno and also his experimental explorations with theatre scoring in Cuba and eventually in Germany. We delve into Christoph’s past, recounting his first experiences with the underground scene as well the music that influenced him and provided the foundations to his raw and unbound resonate that we know today. We also look at labels and how artists are nurtured around them, and we get first hand insight into how he became resident of Rote Sonne, Griessemhule and Khidi and get a sense of the ever evolving drive of this artist toward fresh and non conventional sounds. Bside Incoming: Levi Love Disco This week we continue our international quest, this time venturing through the Black Sea to the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi. Here we find Levi Berishvili, better known as Levi Love Disco - a young emerging selector from the the Mountain region of Racha, paving his way into the ever exciting Georgian music scene. At the age of 21 he has had an impressive run with his DJing, spinning his records in clubs and festivals of high caliber; Club Der Visionare , Khidi , Mountain festival , and his 3 year long residency in 2018 with Ezo festival. As his name suggests, his true passion is collecting and sharing disco records from all time periods. However like most of us, he enjoys playing a wide range of music. When playing in clubs and festivals he speaks of taking influence from house DJs such as Ron hardy and Jeremy Underground, fusing disco and house sounds to create the energy and excitement his sets deliver. For his Bside podcast however he starts by taking us on a tour of his favorite jazz records, spanning from calming clarinets and vocals, to eerie trumpets and snares.
