Join Oliver as he chills with actor, comedian, musician and writer Chris Candy! He hosts his own weekly radio show called 'Neüz Pollution' on Los Angeles' KXLU and co-hosts a podcast called 'Bumper 2 Bumper' with filmmaker Rick Darge. In addition to his many talents, he is also the only son of legendary actor John Candy! Things kick off with talk about the Crackup Comedy Festival here in Ottawa, where Chris was bestowing this year's Candy Awards upon standup comic Big Daddy Tazz and SCTV alumni Robin Duke. Oliver learns about Chris' musical endeavors, as well as his longstanding friendship with ska/punk icon Mike Park. The conversation later covers some of the very entertaining short films that Chris has been involved with and the importance of following your own path. Which leads to chatting about his Dad's remarkable body of work and Chris reflecting on actor Ryan Renolds' extreme admiration for John. The Jagged Baptist Club hail from Los Angeles, USA. The band consists of musicians Blake Stokes, Morgan Ponder, Josh Boyd, and CJ Ramsey. Their debut album, Reptile Super Show, was released in summer of 2019 on Chain Letter Collective. November 2021 saw the release of their album “Temptation Death House” which was immediately championed by Radio Stations such as KCRW, KXLU, BBC Music, XS Manchester and Radio X. Having been compared to Primal Scream and Depeche Mode, with influences including Blur, Public Image Limited, The Birthday Party, and Division of Laura Lee, their music and live show have garnered positive response from audiences and critics alike. They recently toured Europe, Eire and The UK, which is where we caught up with them when they played at the amazing, The Handyman in Smithdown Road, Liverpool. I managed to get some time with Lead Singer, Blake Stokes, before the band went on stage to play their fantastic set.

Jason Bentley ’92 says his stint as general manager of KXLU, LMU’s independent radio station, occurred during “the golden age of college rock.” Bentley went on to greater fame as a KCRW DJ and music director. Here he talks about his days in the KXLU studios and his new podcast, The Backstory, featuring interviews with artists.
Further was originally a Quartet and then for awhile it was just the three of us. Towards the end we started moving away from low-fi records, trying to make our sound a little bit better. There was a time we didn’t even have a bass player, it was just three guitars and drums. We knew we needed a keyboard player and bass player. I saw this kid at the radio station one day, he was kind of like a punk rock/emu kid. I said, “can you play any instruments?” He said, “I can play guitar.” I said, “do you think you can play bass?” He said, “I can try.” I said, “do you want to come to practice Thursday?” That guy was Chris Gunst. I left Further to do a project with Sony and eventually after Further dissolved, they started a new band called Beachwood Sparks. That’s when Farmer Dave came in. There was a radio show that a couple of the guys from Beachwood Sparks had on KXLU, the local indie station out here (SoCal), they actually got in trouble, and almost got kicked off the air, because in the middle of the punk rock/indie rock, they would play David Crosby and Gram Parsons, and that was a big no-no. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

We are taking this episode to catch all our listeners up on what we have been up to recently and chat about a few things on the top of our minds. We run through the new movie about Mötley Crüe and Sourdough's experience meeting Jeff Tremaine, the man behind the Jackass franchise. From there, the conversation turns to photography, cameras and early experiences of taking analog photos. We look back at a history of racking film and cologne and the profitable way you could make these work for you as a young graffiti artist with some industry. We also discuss what sex positions our parents might have been in when we were conceived. After which, we turn to hip hop, music, and cultural development in the last 30 years. We discuss the art of sampling and how this opened up a universe of music for hip hop heads and lament the current state of hip hop and why it's impossible to stay up to date with everything these days. For this and a whole lot more, join us today on the Not Real Art Podcast! Key Points From This Episode: New mics in the studio! Jeff Tremaine of Jackass, Mötley Crüe and The Dirt. First cameras and photography practices these days. Racking film and developing photos of illegal activities. Making a living from stealing cologne. Favorite sex positions and imagining your own conception. The overlap between metal and hip-hop fashion. Music tastes growing up and coverage on TV. Discovering artists through hip hop samples. The art form of sampling and mainstream appreciation. Families that twerk together stay together! Staying relevant, in-the-know and the newest music on Soundcloud. Hip-hop we loved and hated over the years. Art's relationship to the time and zeitgeist. The resurgence of vinyl, personal soundtracks and living in a bubble. And much more! Deep Tech Mix for 88.9FM KXLU 5/19/13 by DYLA
I was invited back onto KXLU 88.9 FM "In A Dream" w/ Mystic Pete in Los Angeles. This was a 2 hour live set & interview with Pete on the air.
In 1992 I was a few years into hosting Reggae Music Forward, a weekly reggae radio show on KXLU Los Angeles. The program focused on new dancehall and modern roots music, with some foundation and old cuts in thrown in as well. But 1992 was also a turning point for reggae in general; it was a peak moment of the newly ascendant dancehall era and major American labels had been on a dancehall and reggae artist signing binge for a few years. Tiger, Mad Cobra, Supercat, Shabba Ranks and others all cut major label deals and their music began being remixed and merged with other urban genres. Hence, a good portion of this broadcast features reggae-hip-hop remixes that were popular at the time. These tracks are mixed back to back, using the station’s rudimentary belt-drive Techniques turntables. The blends are not all perfect, but live mixing was an innovation back then, especially on college radio. The set was recorded to cassette and I have edited out the breaks and back announcing. I believe this set is a good representation of not only the prominent styles of the time, but also the strong ties with hip-hop. It’s amazing to think that “Murder She Wrote” – which is possibly the world’s most recognizable dancehall anthem -- had only just come out. Bogle-dance rhythms like Shabba’s “Ting A Ling” were dominant. At the same time, roots singers like Cocoa Tea and Garnet Silk were starting to revive the dormant melodic reggae scene. All in all, this is a snapshot of ragga 92-style, blasting from the Los Angeles nighttime airwaves. I hope you enjoy this radio selections, and I plan to bring a few more from this era forward this year.
