The addition of the suffix "-ies" (or in the singular form, "-y") converts the word into a diminutive. Literally: "little pants." .... Spend 30 engrossing minutes in the company of the award-winning US poet Shane McCrae and Review editor Emily Berry as they discuss Sylvia Plath's ‘Lady Lazarus' as the trigger, when he was just 15, of McCrae's poetry career; John Keats and the Gothic; George Herbert; and McCrae's conversion from free verse to metrical verse. ‘I can only recommend that everyone abandon the way they've been writing and see what happens if they write in a different way,' he says. Fascinating on the ‘productive panic' of building a collection, McCrae also gives wonderful readings of his poems published in the autumn 2021 issue of The Poetry Review: 'Explaining My Appearance in Certain Pictures', 'The Fungus Called Dead Man's Fingers' and 'The Dead Negro in the Modernist Long Poem'.

Sylvia Plath is one of the most well known and admired poets of the 20th century. She is celebrated for her contribution to literature, the confessional poetry movement and feminist writing.   Her works such as “Daddy”, “Lady Lazarus” and her semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar normalised female anger and unapologetic expression. In her work she explores the concepts of patriarchy, power, sexual double standards, the quest for identity and mental health in the 1950's.    She is often defined by her tragic death. Whilst Jussy attempted to tell her story outside of this lens we acknowledge that it is a heavy episode that may trigger our listeners.    If this episode has brought up anything you are struggling with please call lifeline on 13 11 14 or 1800 RESPECT.    Our recommendations this week were; Jericho Road Clothing (yes - again) It's Been a Pleasure Noni Blake by Claire Christian Jussy's mates cyclone cocktail recipe James Hillier (aka: Nordacious)  Chole was late to the party with Google assistant    As always if you love what we create each week then give us a little love by writing a review or rating the pod.    This episode discusses themes of severe depression, suicidal ideation and suicide, and domestic violence. Heather Clark, Professor of Contemporary Poetry at the University of Huddersfield and author of the award-winning biography Red Comet, joins the Slightly Foxed team from New York to dispel the myths that have come to surround Sylvia Plath's life and art. Tired of the cliché of the hysterical female writer, and of the enduring focus on Plath's death rather than her trailblazing poetry and fiction, Clark used a wealth of new material – including juvenilia, unpublished letters and manuscripts, and psychiatric records – to explore Plath's literary landscape. She conjures the spirit of the star English student at Smith College who won a Fulbright scholarship to Cambridge University and who brought her enormous appetite for life to her writing and relationships. We follow her life from the ‘mad passionate abandon' of her thunderclap meeting with Ted Hughes, rebellion against genteel verse and her creation of a dark ‘potboiler' in The Bell Jar to her belief that a full literary life and a family unit can coexist and the outpouring of first-rate poems fuelled by rage in her final days. She introduced female anger and energy into the poetic lexicon with ‘Lady Lazarus', ‘Daddy', ‘Ariel' and more; poems that were considered shocking at the time, but which are now regarded as masterpieces. And there are more biographies to be found in our round-up of reading recommendations – of renegade anthropologists and female abstract expressionists – as well as a relationship between a father and his young son told through illustrated letters that leap off the page in Letters to Michael, with wonderful readings by the actor Nigel Anthony. Andrew Altschul discusses his latest novel, The Gringa, with host Richard Wolinsky. The Gringa tells the story of an American activist who goes to Peru in the early 1990s and becomes involved with a radical group who is eventually charged and incarcerated with terrorist crimes, based loosely on the real-life story of Lori Berenson. Paralleling that story is one of Andres, an American writer living in Peru years later, who must cope not only with his own feelings about politics and American influence around the world, but with the notion of American exceptionalism. Andrew Altschul is the author of two earlier novels, Lady Lazarus and Deus Ex Machina. The post Andrew Altschul: “The Gringa.” appeared first on KPFA.

B. W. Powe is a Canadian poet, novelist, essayist and professor at York University, in Toronto. His work, though it covers an immense range of topics from politics and poetics to magic and technology, proceeds from a mystical apprehension of the universe as the locus of magical operations, the site of experiments in cosmic becoming. In his various books and essays, Powe continues a uniquely Canadian form of the visionary tradition whose luminaries include his former teachers Marshall McLuhan and Northrop Frye. In this episode, he joins JF and Phil for an exploration of the meaning, potency, and danger of the visionary in art and literature. A reading of Sylvia Plath’s Poem, Lady Lazarus

The History of Literature

Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) was born in Boston in 1932, the daughter of a German-born professor, Otto Plath, and his student, Aurelia Schober. After her father died in 1940, Plath's family moved to Wellesley, Massachusetts, where her mother taught secretarial studies at Boston University and Plath embarked on a path that she would follow the rest of her life: she was a gifted student, she wrote poetry and stories, she won awards and prizes and scholarships - and she began to suffer from the severe depression that would ultimately lead to her death. Plath's life, including her incendiary marriage to British poet Ted Hughes, will be discussed in a separate episode. In this episode, we focus on Plath's poetry, as superfan Mike Palindrome, President of the Literature Supporters Club, selects five poems to introduce Plath: The Applicant, Lady Lazarus, Morning Song, The Colossus, and The Stones. – Sugarman | Maria Callas – Ave Maria von Franz Schubert | The Dø – Travel Light Aufführungen: 22. / 23. ¡Bienvenidos a nuestro vigésimo-cuarto programa! 0:00'00 ------- Previously. 1:28'21 ------- TV: Sandwich King. 1:34'17 ------- Promo de Droidcast. 1:36'19 ------- La sobremesa. 1:52'11 ------- Despedida y formas de contacto. 1:52'45 ------- Disclaimer.
