Sal Fish, the Godfather, is back for his second conversation on Slow Baja. This time, we met above the beach at his place in La Paz. We picked up where our previous conversation ended around 1969. At the time, Sal worked for Petersen Publications as the Publisher of Car Craft and later Hot Rod Magazine. One day, while visiting Revel, the model company, with Bob Weggeland, his advertising salesman, the company's owners asked Sal and Bob to race the Baja Bug in the NORRA Mexican 1000. He knew the adventure would be a good story (and ad sales) for the magazine and leaped at the opportunity. Sal competed in the 1969, 1970, and 1971 races. Racer and entrepreneur Mickey Thompson recruited Sal as a partner soon after he created SCORE International in 1973. By 1974, Sal and Thompson were hosting the Baja 1000. Sal used his people and publishing skills to rapidly grow the organization and soon bought Thompson out. In the process, Sal realized Thompson's vision to make off-road racing as big as NASCAR. Sal sold SCORE in 2012. Active and fit, he enjoys living in Malibu and spending time with his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara. The couple has a second home in La Paz, where Sal enjoys kayaking and entertaining his friends.  Sal is a 2006 inductee of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. Her articles jumped off the page with a unique voice that made the reader feel like they were right there, driving around in the featured car or behind the scenes at events like Pike's Peak and Baja.Since Hot Rod, Elana has worked as a freelancer, written a book with Don Prudhomme called Don "The Snake" Prudhomme: My Life Beyond the 1320, and made her way back to a magazine staff position, this time as Senior Features Editor at Car and Driver. In her current gig, Elana gets to drive around in brand new cars, comparing and contrasting with her ever-growing fleet of vintage drivers. She still works plenty of the clever storytelling and automotive adventuring that we've come to expect from her into her copy.Be sure to check out Elana and Tom's YouTube channel (Challengeher) and follow her on Instagram @challengeher.

Hot Rod Blues, Episode 15, George Poteet The Hot Rod Blues guys managed to corner hot rodder and ten-time Speed Week Hot Rod trophy winner, George Poteet, to talk about his history. Poteet grew up in Mantachie, Mississippi, where he was introduced to his love of cars at nearby Fulton Dragway. He ended up going to college at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), graduating with a degree in Business. From there, he went on to work for a company developing home water filtration systems that he helped design from a unit found in a trash bin in Canada (you can't make this up!). His success lead to other successful endeavors, which allowed him to start buying the cars he coveted as a kid. Over the past two decades, Poteet has been one of the most prolific benefactors of hot rod shops across the country. He was the first paying customer of several well-known builders who have gone on to build some of the most iconic custom cars taking some of the most prestigious awards in the car hobby. Through his love of hot rods and street rods, he remembers looking at the pages of Hot Rod Magazine and wanting to see the Bonneville Speedway. After joining the Memphis Street Rods, Poteet got his first introduction to the Bonneville Salt Flats when his friend Paul Kosma invited him to watch him run. He's had "salt fever" ever since after buying a car on that fateful trip. If you know anything at all about land speed racing, you'll recognize George Poteet's name as the driver of the Speed Demon, a twin-turbo LS-powered streamliner that has won the Hot Rod trophy an astounding ten times. The trophy is presented to the car with the highest speed at the Bonneville Speed Week in August. Poteet holds numerous land speed records in Speed Demon with a multitude of powerplants. In the process, Poteet has gone over 400 mph (on the ground) than any other person on the planet. The Speed Demon is the fastest piston-powered vehicle on the planet and the team is shooting for 500mph at this year's meet. Poteet gives the guys a rundown on the whole story of how it all came to be. He is a humble man who is uncomfortable speaking about his accomplishments and rarely does interviews. The Hot Rod Blues crew extends a sincere thank you to Mr. Poteet for sitting down with us and telling us his story. One of our goals with the Hot Rod Blues podcast is to document Memphis hot rodding history, and that cannot be done without knowing more about George Poteet. It was an extreme honor for us to sit down with him for as long as he did. We hope you enjoy the interview and share it with your friends! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hot Rod Blue Podcast is co-hosted by Shawn Brereton of Auto Enthusiast Network, Mike Abbott of Steel Rose Metal Co, Javier Augustine of Bomber Steel Customs, and Shawn Young of Kingfish Metal Works. Revisiting things a few years later can be perilous and More American Graffiti is maybe a very good example of this. Even lacking most of the creative team from the first movie American Graffiti still manages to spawn a weird alternate reality sequel to American Graffiti (1973) that comes out a year later called The Hollywood Knights. Knight Time is the Right Time Of the two, The Hollywood Knights is the much more beloved. In writing this episode description I finally cracked the code. I was shocked that an uncredited writer for Two-Lane Blacktop and Aloha, Bobby and Rose would end up making this movie however Floyd Mutrux worked at Second City and, realistically, The Hollywood Knights feels like a very produced graduation improv show where they find a story somewhere in there among all the antics. This movie 100% has Hot Rod credentials. I mentioned Project X and I had known it mostly as a Hot Rod Magazine car because Popular Hot Rodding was on the decline but it, indeed, was the car of Popular Hot Rodding for some time. All of these brands have been eaten up by Motortrend, it seems. The T bucket "rail job" was a cool and very authentic car that rarely shows up in movies. More Isn't Better I wish it was, though. There was some heart and thought put into this movie but I think that the hand of Lucas weighed heavily on the steering wheel of development and production. We can, in hindsight, see that it was inevitable as we've seen the saga of Star Wars but it's unfortunate that it had to be that way. Bill Norton didn't have a prolific credited writing career but was a journeyman TV director. He wouldn't necessarily show up on the list of people who would push back on that as More American Graffiti was at an early point in his directorial career. In a weird tie-in to car movies in general, Monte Hellman was assistant director to Bill Norton on Cisco Pike (1971). Milner was racing what we, today, call a "sling shot" and wearing those masks to not die from the nitromethane fumes was definitely an eye-catcher. Racing was wild back then but these racing scenes, for the most part, are very staged and slow. Other movies have done racing much better (even American Graffiti) but I guess they saved it up for that one last shot. Filming everything for Milner at the track makes it basically a "bottle episode" so I guess that was one way to save some money. Music Matters So the commonality here is the music. A ton of hits. An actual ton. More American Graffiti definitely goes into the later protest songs and hippy movement music while The Hollywood Knights stays in the pockets with The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean (the other The Beach Boys), The Four Seasons, The Chiffons, The Supremes, etc). I think THK shows a bit more range, culturally, than More American Graffiti (which very dedicated to Vietnam and its protests) especially when Newbomb Turk farts "Volare". Interestingly, and I hope it was intentional because I, in my head canon, really want this connection to be real and strong, The Hollywood Knights ends with Martha & The Vandellas' "Heat Wave" and More American Graffiti opens with Martha & The Vandellas' "Heat Wave". For the Audio Enthusiasts Used the WA-47 Jr (cardioid pattern) on the UA Volt 276 with the compressor and vintage modes on. No additional compression was used on the main part of the episode (there was limiting on the whole thing but it was fairly conservative). Stereo section was Rode M5s into a Zoom F6. There was severe wind noise so I cut out a lot of the low end. I did need to run a little bit of voice de-noise because I guess I wasn't speaking very loud and the noise levels around me were wild. The errata part was a Rode VideoMic Go II and I did get rid of some room tone on that one as well. Thanks for listening. Rate, like, and bell that smash for subscribe.

Five-and-a-half years after launching this show with Mike Finnegan we have finally landed his (one time) boss, mentor, adventurer, and Roadkillinginly cool buddy David Freiburger! David has become a staple in the automotive media landscape having spent 20-plus years in print before he ever came to YouTube and Television. He just recently penned his final piece for the February 2022 edition Hot Rod Magazine and last year filmed 61 individual episodes for various shows on the Motor Trend platform (Roadkill, Roadkill Garage, Engine Masters, etc.). In this discussion you'll learn what we all really wanted to know about living life in the fast lane, working a seemingly endless schedule, and never getting the chance to completely finish any project. Like us, David grew up believing that 1968 and '69 Chargers were it when it came to the all invulnerable muscle car, as powerful as it is cool looking, as desirable to others as it faithful to its owner. He enjoyed the Chargers of The Dukes of Hazzard (and has stories to tell), Dirty Marty Crazy Larry, and others, but his favorite is the one that he and Finnegan built together: General Mayhem. If you've followed that car over the years you know it has gone from a motorhome powered drifting underdog to a Hellcat powered drag car. David loved the first iteration of it and he's just recently put it back to it's original glory. Patreon Peeps, the year 2021 will be an important one for Patreon specifically, and if you'd consider jumping up to the $5 level it would sure help. The $10 level will remain and we now have a brand new $20 level as well! An engineer and manager at General Motors, Mark has been called the "Godfather" of the Pro-Touring movement, and he still builds cars out of his garage. "To me, a pro-touring car is just kind of taking an older car that you like the esthetics of and you harden it...to perform better and be more reliable," says Mark.  "You can do things with it like go on cross-country drives or to track events." Mark speaks with Larry about building a career that dovetails with his passion. He talks about racing at One Lap of America in a ’69 Camaro, and how he found the car in the pre-internet days for $2500, which launched his hot rod career. The car ended up on the cover of Car Craft Magazine. Hot Rod Magazine voted it one of top 10 cars of 1993.  Mark also provides tips on buying and rebuilding cars.

Ryan Brutt is a writer and photographer who exudes enthusiasm about muscle cars. His interest is overtly apparent in his new book, Muscle Car Barn Finds. It details the art of automotive scavenger hunts. Brutt, self-described as an Automotive Archaeologist, lives in Chicago. The contributing rider to Hot Rod Magazine is our guest on Episode 34 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss the book and Brutt's trials and tribulations as he travels through several states on his mission to discover hundreds of often abandoned rarities. Consider Brutt's premise: You're driving along a country road in Alabama and something bright orange in nearby field attracts your attention. It's parked near an old barn and partly covered in mildew. You pull into what remains of the driveway in the abandoned lot and your hunch is correct. It's a 1966 Mustang Fastback. It looks neglected. But a good washing later, it's presentable, and another vintage muscle car has a new life. The same scenario could involve a station wagon in Michigan, a Mercedes-Benz in Florida or a long-forgotten pick-up truck in Texas. They're all known by the automotive colloquialism, Barn Finds. It's the sub-set of muscle car barn finds Brutt honors in his new book of the same name. Sub-titled “Rusty Road Runners, Abandoned AMXs and Camaros and More!” (Motorbooks, $35), the 160-page hardback details the author's treks to uncover muscle car enthusiasts' dream machines. “These old warriors aren't dead, just resting,” reads a segment of the book's promotional material. “A drive in the country or through a small-town back street will reveal them lurking under tarps, hidden behind garage doors and stashed behind fences from prying eyes.” While traveling in eastern Tennessee, Brutt finds what he had long heard about but couldn't believe until it appeared through some roadside hedges. Past a few roads of project cars in various shapes, sizes and degrees of disarray, a storage shed was home to an array of first-generation Corvettes. “In all my travels, I had never seen such a collection of really early Corvettes,” he writes. “There were three rows of them with three or four cars per row.” Brutt also details a no-so-pleasing occasion when he faced the wrath of a husband and wife, who, let's say, didn't exactly provide a warm welcome. He is an editor at Speedhunters, a contributor to Hot Rod Magazine, the premier photog for the Formula Drift series and the designated heavy hitter behind the camera for events such as the Gumball 3000 and Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Larry is also a man with an insane work ethic and during his conversation with Kyle, he outlines his rise from being a nerdy California kid with a camera to the giant he his today. Larry and Kyle also get into Larry's fleet of project cars including his super internet-famous Datsun 240z, "Ole Orange Bang," and his daily driver manual-equipped FJ Cruiser. They also touch the nature of print magazines in the US vs Japan and the weird microcosm that is Japanese car culture. This is a rare look at the mind of someone who has made it his life to seek out car culture wherever it lives, whether that's Barbados or Gatebil or Laguna Seca. He's one of our favorite photographers working today and it was an honor to sit down and pick his brain for 45 minutes. This is a fun one!
