Germany's parliament blocked the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Turkey earlier this month. This decision follows the arrest of Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, and comes amid reports that Turkey is pressing the US to lift CAATSA sanctions and sell it F-35s. Sinan Ciddi, a non-resident senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and an expert on Turkish politics, and Bradley Bowman, senior director of the Center on Military and Political Power at FDD, join Thanos Davelis as we break down why Germany's move is significant and whether it should serve as an example to the Trump administration. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:‘Attack on Democracy': Germany Blocks Eurofighter Sale to Turkey for Imprisoning Opposition LeaderTime For a New Policy Toward ErdoganFinMin sends message of recovery from IMF Spring MeetingsGreece announces 1 billion euros in financial benefits after posting 1.3% budget surplus
Rapidement, on constate plusieurs incohérences.

What do the Sea Harrier, F-15B Eagle, X-32 JSF contestant, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Hawk all have in common?Well, not much, actually, except that they have all been flown by this week's guest, retired Royal Navy Commander Paul "Pebbles" Stone. As an Empire Test Pilots' School graduate, Pebbles flew all these aircraft and many more and spins quite a yarn about them with guest cohost Paul "Tremors" Tremelling.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-fighter-pilot-podcast/donations
Many of us who follow aerospace and defence pay a lot of attention to the war in Ukraine, and particularly new tactics and capabilities. Our episode today is an effort to discuss the transformation that the Ukrainian Air Force is making from former Soviet Union or Russian aircraft to western fighter aircraft.Ukraine has been defending themselves against Russian forces since they invaded Crimea in 2014, and then re-attacked in early 2022.At the start of the war Ukraine had around 125 warplanes. Reports indicate that have lost around 80 jets, but numbers of aircraft have been bolstered by the donation of similar types of aircraft from some of the former Soviet states. There is no doubt that Ukrainian pilots have performed heroically against overwhelming odds. With that said, the Ukrainian Air Force has faced significant challenges with aging fleets of aircraft and sustainment issues which make their fleets increasingly difficult to field.Ukraine has therefore spent many months lobbying for western combat aircraft, especially F-16's, which they believe will help them better defend their country.A number of countries like Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands and Norway, have pledged F-16s to Ukraine; and Ukrainian Air Force pilots have been training in a number of countries to get proficient on flying the western jet, with Denmark being one of those countries. For this episode, I thought it would be informative to get a sense of what Ukrainian pilots are experiencing as they transition to a new platform like the F-16.To do this I am pleased to introduce a wonderful friend to me and to this podcast, fighter pilot Nick Graham, who flew the Tornado F3 and the Eurofighter Typhoon in the Royal Air Force (RAF), and also the F-16 when on exchange in Denmark.I've asked Nick to participate in this chat because his experience of learning to fly the F-16 in Denmark provides excellent insight on what Ukrainian pilots are experiencing as they shift from MiG and Sukhoi aircraft to the F-16.I am very thankful to Nick for taking the time to share his professional fighter pilot experience, and his insight and perspectives on this topic. We wish Ukraine success in their fight to defend their country!Go Bold!

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Operation Allied Force, the NATO aerial bombing campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the Kosovo War. The air strikes lasted from 24 March 1999 to 10 June 1999.Joining for this episode is retired Lieutenant-Colonel Billie Flynn, who served in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for 23 years. In 1984 Flynn was selected to be a pipeliner for the RCAF's new CF-18 Hornet fighter, and ultimately rose in the ranks to become the Commanding Officer of 441 Tactical Fighter Squadron.During his time as Commanding Officer, Colonel Flynn also served as the Commander of Task Force Aviano, the unit of the Canadian Armed Forces that implemented Operation Echo in support of Operation Allied Force; it was there that he led the formation of the "Balkan Rats" and flew combat missions over Kosovo and the former Republic of Yugoslavia. The Task Force Aviano combat unit received Battle Honours from Queen Elizabeth II, the first such distinction for a Canadian fighting unit since World War II.Flynn's 40+ year flying experience includes fighter and test pilot service with the RCAF, the United States Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and NASA. After retiring from the RCAF, Flynn flew as a civilian test pilot for the Eurofighter Typhoon, and later flew as a Senior Test Pilot for the F-35.In this episode you will hear Colonel Flynn's first hand perspective about the RCAF's large fighter force (18 CF-18 jets) which conducted combat operations during Operation Allied Force. He describes the genesis of the "Balkan Rats" and how he and the RCAF fighter force executed on their taskings, and all told flew on 10% of all bombing missions. Flynn also shares his memory of being in the Combined Air Operations Center during the rescue of Vega 31, the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter (actually an attack aircraft) that was shot down on 27 Match 1999.It's a fascinating first-hand perspective on the RCAF's fighter force during Operation Allied Force. We publish this episode to commemorate and honor their service.Go Bold!

Hatta Türkiye İsveç'in üyeliğine onay verdiğinde ABD'nin F-16'lar konusunda adım atıp atmayacağı bile soru işareti. Son tahlilde ABD Senatosu Dış İlişkiler Komitesi Başkanlığı'nı Türk düşmanı Menendez'den devralan Senatör Ben Cardin F-16 satışı için tek meselenin İsveç'in NATO üyeliği olmadığını söyledi. Sonra sayıyı 40'a çıkarmak.

This time we are talking about the future of speed in the air. What is the difference between supersonic and hypersonic travel, what speeds might we reach in the future and how can engines achieve this? Since the grounding of Concorde there has been no supersonic commercial air travel – but with new start-ups appearing globally, is that all about to change? And what are the implications of hypersonic speeds for global security? Helen is joined by Conrad Banks. Conrad is the Chief Engineer for Defence Future Programmes and Research and Technology for the Aerospace division of Rolls-Royce plc., where he is responsible for new propulsion system technology for future military aerospace requirements. An aeronautical engineer, Conrad's career is based on engine performance and controls, and he has held various roles in engineering and management at Rolls Royce, which have included projects such as engines for the Harrier and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, and propulsion for the Taranis Unmanned Combat Aircraft. In order to replace their legacy F/A-18 Hornets which have been flying for the Finnish Air Force or FAF since 1995, the Ministry of defence initiated a replacement program known as the HX challenge back in 2015. The goal of the HX challenge was an ambitious one: procure new multi role fighters while maintaining the FAF's current numerical strength of 64 and do this with an allocated price cap of 10 billion Euros. These new fighters must be able to endure low temperatures along with harsh weather conditions common to Finland while still performing a diverse range of missions including air superiority, air to ground, anti-ship, reconnaissance, and the ability to conduct deep strikes to deter potential foreign attackers. Upon choosing a new fighter, the legacy hornets would be phased out between 2025 and 2030, with the new fighter being expected to serve into the 2060s. The ramifications of the F35 selection are significant for fighter aircraft manufacturers. Finland joins the ever-growing group of nations that are adopting the F35 over sometimes more geographically closer options such as the Saab Gripen, the Dassault Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon. After several hi-octane podcasts celebrating the magic of the Merlin-powered Avro Lancaster, and the roar of the mighty Eurofighter Typhoon, we're back with, not so much a bang, but definitely not a whimper either, in fact more of a whoosh. This week the TLG team goes gliding. None of us knew quite what to expect ahead of our gliding debuts, but, as you'll hear in our Full Flaps episode, we loved it! We hope this episode will open your eyes, as it did ours, to the glory of gliding, and the thrills it brings. It's about far more than just genteelly floating through the air enjoying the view, although if that's what you want it is one of life's great airborne experiences. But it provides drama and excitement too, and as we discovered courtesy of our exuberant and generous hosts at Trent Valley Gliding Club at Kirton-in-Lindsey (www.tvgc.org.uk), there are things you can do in a glider you might never have thought possible. #gliding #trentvalleyglidingclub #avgeek #avglider

The TLG Quiz is as fiercely contested as ever with some top notch whingeing from both Jez and James. Please do join us for our latest podcast and be catapulted into the glorious world of gliding.
What happens when on a family holiday to Florida, you pop into the Kennedy Space Centre as a sixteen-year-old and there and then decide that you want to go to space? In Sophie Harker's case, you come back and get your head down to achieving academically what you are capable of. A love of Mathematics led to a Masters Degree course at Nottingham, where she met the first British astronaut, Helen Sharman. In conversation, Sophie was advised that engineering could be her route to space. And the rest is pretty much history. Sophie joined the BAE Systems Graduate Scheme, consisting of four engineering placements across various platforms and products, including the Eurofighter Typhoon. Sophie is currently embedded in the Team Tempest project working on advanced technologies for flight control systems. Sophie is one of the youngest engineers to have achieved chartered status at the age of only 25. In 2016 she became the BAE Systems Technical Graduate of the Year; SEMTA made her their Graduate of the year in 2017; in the same year, she was featured in the Daily Telegraphs Top 50 Women in Engineering. In 2018 Sophie was awarded the Bee Beaumont Award - Awarded to 'newly qualified engineers who have made an outstanding contribution to the business in the early stages of their career'. Also, in 2018, Sophie won the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year and more recently was awarded the Sir Henry Royce Medal, which recognises her research in developing future technologies for the aviation history. By Sophie's own admission, she did not set out on a mission to win these awards; in fact, when I mentioned them on the podcast, she was slightly embarrassed; these awards sprung from a career doing something that she loves to the very best of her ability. This podcast was an absolute joy to record. I am generally not a gambling man, and as Sophie points out, the odds of getting to space are stacked against her, yet I would have a few sneaky pounds on Sophie Harker following the same footsteps trod by a certain Helen Sharman. Sit back, pour a drink and be inspired. Designed for Life - In conversation with Sophie Harker.
We're continuing with our trip to Lincolnshire, Bomber County, where we've been focussing on the Avro Lancaster. But in this episode we move right up to date with our visit to RAF Coningsby, one of the RAF's Typhoon bases where our host for the day, Flt Lt Nick Callinswood, gave us incredible access as we explored and sat in an operational Typhoon, and gave all four of us instruction in the Typhoon flight simulator. So we've divided the full flaps episode into two parts as there's so much great stuff: the tour around the aircraft will be part one, or the leading edge slat, the flight sim experience part two, the trailing edge. In the studio, James is interesting again when we ask him a question, and tells us that a Typhoon is faster than a Puma. We also talk about personalised aircraft registrations; and Ron Goodwin's estate benefits nicely from Jez's Typhoon Quick Facts which were so long, the entire Battle of Britain them tune had to be played twice. The ever popular, ever brilliant but testing quiz turns typically niggly, with more needle than you'd find in your grandmother's sewing kit, as Jez and James continue to try and stitch each other up. But we think the clip in the Typhoon hangar at RAF Coningsby will make the pain of listening to all that other nonsense worth your while. Please enjoy. We did.
It's official, Switzerland has chosen the Lockheed Martin F35A Lightning II as its newest fighter plane. In a 5.5 Billion Dollar deal that adds a 15th nation to the growing base of F35 users, the agreement also comes alongside an additional 2.1 Billion dollar deal to buy the surface to air Patriot missile defense system. Switzerland's decision to procure the F35 has sent shockwaves throughout Europe. The Lightning II beat out the Dassault Rafale which is produced in France, the Eurofighter Typhoon which is jointly produced by Germany, Italy, the UK and Spain, and even the Boeing Super Hornet. Additionally, Swiss voters decided to remove the Saab Gripen from Switzerland's fighter competition some seven years ago. Looking back at a career dominated by the use of flight simulation as a tool for operational training, Wg Cdr Eastman gives personal insights into flight simulation from the viewpoint of an RAF pilot, a commander of a training unit and a purchaser for the Ministry of Defence using the Public Finance Initiative. Eastman also shares his experiences of the technology used to train pilots to fly many of the aircraft used by the RAF in the last half of the twentieth century, including the BAC Jet Provost, Hawker Siddeley Nimrod, SEPECAT Jaguar, BAE Systems Hawk, the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, and ending with the Eurofighter Typhoon. The lecture concludes with Eastman making predictions on the future of his topic and the lecture is threaded with tributes to the pioneer of flight simulation, Edwin A. Link. Wg Cdr Dick Eastman OBE gave the Royal Aeronautical Society’s 2012 Edwin A. Link Memorial Lecture, organised by the RAeS Flight Simulation Group, on 30 May 2012. The lecture was introduced by Gordon Woolley FRAeS and the podcast was edited by Eur Ing Mike Stanberry FRAeS.
BAE Systems is one of the world's leading global defence, security, and aerospace companies. The company recently announced an Applied Intelligence spin-out, cybersecurity venture called SOC.OS. The announcement is considered another milestone in what has been an eventful and remarkable few years for its CEO, David Mareels. David is a graduate of BAE Systems' demanding SIGMA leadership programme. His journey with the company has taken him from project engineering management in Portsmouth, to a Eurofighter Typhoon program in Warton, before settling in Applied Intelligence in 2018. During this time, he became involved in the corporate incubator programme, taking a lead role at SOC.OS. SOC.OS is a SaaS product and can be thought of as embedding an extra analyst into the team, one who can remember every interconnected relationship between every alert produced from each security tool, even if generated weeks and months apart. SOC.OS continuously operates, analyzes, triages, and prioritizes the most important incidents before escalating it to the IT security team for further review via a graphical user interface. I invited David onto the podcast to learn how technology is transforming multiple industries. But also learn more about David's journey from engineering graduate to CEO.
If someone asked you about the modern, delta-wing European fighter jet with canards, you might rightly respond, “which one?” To be sure, the Dassault Rafale ( https://www.dassault-aviation.com/en/defense/rafale/introduction/ ) , Eurofighter Typhoon ( https://www.eurofighter.com/ ) , and Saab Gripen ( https://saab.com/gripen/ ) all share similar features. Why is that? And how do we distinguish between them? On this episode, German Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Lorenz “Enzo” Schaffelhofer shares how to distinguish his favorite, the Eurofighter Typhoon, from the other aircraft and why he feels it is the superior fighter. Hold on tight while we describe the amazing performance of this cutting-edge fighter and how, with a more capable missile than the AIM-120D AMRAAM ( http://www.deagel.com/Defensive-Weapons/AIM-120D-AMRAAM_a001164006.aspx ) , it could be even more lethal. During the listener question segment, Jell-O and Sunshine discuss military aircraft lots versus blocks, thoughts on a choice for Canada’s CF-18 Hornet replacement, some broad ideas on how to succeed in ROTC, and differences between East and West Coast Navy squadrons. British Aerospace’s first Typhoon pilot and then Director of Flight Operations for BAe’s Military Aircraft Division, Chris Yeo, gives an insight into the development of the multi-role combat aircraft when it was about to start its flight demonstration programme and eighteen months after the first flight of BAe’s Development Aircraft 2. Then known as the Eurofighter 2000, Yeo tells his audience what had been achieved in the first two phases of the project by the three flying prototypes, together with a brief history of the aircraft, a description of the operational systems, aerodynamic shape, structure, flight control systems and cockpit control systems. He also discusses the long series of research programmes that led to the Typhoon, before going onto show the importance of the requirements produced by the four customer air forces and how the aircraft design evolved to meet those requirements. The podcast concludes with a question and answer session. The Lecture took place on 5 September 1995. The podcast was edited by Mike Stanberry FRAeS and it was digitised thanks to a grant from the Royal Aeronautical Society Foundation.

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is a multi-disciplinary field investigating the boundary between man and machine. With the advent of electronic interactive technologies during past decade, the field turns ever more relevant and important. This talk will present HCI issues for a few special cases where conventional interactive devices and user interfaces do not work. The use cases will include people with severe physical impairment, farmers in India and pilots of Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft. The talk will introduce a concept called user modelling, that helps to personalize user interfaces for people with different range of abilities and contexts of use. The personalization feature is further augmented with intelligent interactive systems where users can control electronic interfaces simply by looking, gesturing and talking to it. The talk will conclude with a few demonstration videos of our recent multi-modal adaptive systems.
