S15 suspension in a 240Z—good idea or nightmare?Joel Dimmack's 1971 Datsun 240Z is no ordinary drift car. Running a VR38DETT swap with Garrett GTX3071R mirrored turbos and making 600-700hp, this 1100kg wet monster blends old-school styling with modern competition-ready tech. But is an S15 suspension transplant really the best setup for drifting?Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inWe dive deep into the Parts Shop MAX kit, chassis stiffening by Pace Innovations, and the MoTeC M150 ECU tuned by Nick Ashvin at NA Motorsport to see what it takes to make this build work. Plus, we break down the Albins 6-speed sequential gearbox, R32 GTR diff & axles, and the challenges of running an S-chassis suspension on a shorter wheelbase.Braking is handled by R33 GTST calipers with Project Mu pads and rotors, along with a twin-caliper rear handbrake setup—a must for a competition drift car. This is one of the wildest Z builds around, and it has presented Joel with some lessons and aspects he would do differently the second time around, but that is precisely what a build like this is all about and how ideas are built into skills.

This 1973 Datsun 240Z (S30) is an excellent example of modernising an older vehicle for competition motorsports, and still driving it home afterwards complete with aftermarket ABS!Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inWith double the stock horsepower via a 3L Nissan L28 with custom pistons, rods, cam, and a ported N42 head care of Datsun Spirit Inc, Darren Garvin's 240Z (aka Nissan Fairlady Z) was a standout from the crowd at the 2022 OPTIMA street car challenge. An Electromotive electronics package has been utilised to help take the car from its factory 150hp (at the crank) carbed output to 300hp at the wheels, with the ATI harmonic damper holding a hall effect trigger setup and the TPS and MAP sensors being used as load inputs and a Jenvey Dynamics 50mm ITB setup on intake duty. Also discussed are other considerations around a carb to EFI conversion.A faster car needs better brakes, with the factory setup, including drum brakes on the rear, being retired in favour of an Arizonzacar brake package that includes Willwood 4 piston callipers and 12.5" rotors. The car also utilises an ABS system from an E46 M3 BMW, and Darren runs us through the requirements, including yaw, pressure and speed sensors. The drivetrain sees a 240SX gearbox mated to a 280Z bell housing, Quaife diff and CV axles to put the power to the ground, and a shortened driveshaft and Techno Toy mount kit to help get and keep it all in place. With most owners ditching their L series in favour of an RB26 or LS V8, it's nice to see this 240Z chassis simply modernised vs radicalised and with 40-50hp more as planned, this car is undoubtedly going to be even more of a weapon on track.

00:00 - Don't Let The Good Ones Get AwayIn this episode, I talk about some of the cars and trucks I've missed out on and how I would approach those potential purchases differently if I had a do-over. 01:05 - Recent Missed Opportunity to Buy a Great Jeep Wrangler TJI missed out on an opportunity to test drive and purchase a 2004 Jeep Wrangler TJ Unlimited (or LJ). I put off going to see the car for over a week because I really wasn't ready to part ways with my existing cars (I'm not Leno, so I can have only one or two cars at a time). Now I regret that decision, and next time a good car comes along, I will have to be ready let something go to free up space and money for a different used car. 08:00 - Should Have Bought an E30 3-Series BMW Before Prices Went Up! Over the years I have test driven multiple examples of BMW's E30 3-series cars in an effort to find one I wanted. I drove the various 325is models and also several E30 M3s, but never found the right combination of condition and price. Even a few years ago, the 325i and is models were still affordable, but they have moved a couple of price categories and now good ones cost more than I want to spend on a car like that. The M3 is even worse. If I had purchased one of the M3s I looked at in the $12K to $15K range, it would have been worth four to five times as much. 14:05 - The Datsun 240Z and the Nissan Z32 300ZX are two more cars I missed out on. I have driven many 240Zs over time and was never moved enough to purchase one of those cars, but today the price for a driver-quality 240Z is about $30,000, and since there are a lot of interesting cars in that price range, I may never get one. But the bigger regret for me is a 1996 300ZX I missed out on that was priced at $6900 when it should have been double that. Today, that car is probably worth closer to $20,000, and all I had to do to buy it was pick up the phone and call, but I wasn't ready to make that purchase. 23:00 - How Would I Approach These Types of Purchases Today? I would review the 5-simple rules to buy a cool used car from Better Than New's episode 2 and episode 40, and I would pay particularly close attention to rule #5, which is "be ready to buy". 26:10 - Don't Make The Mistakes I have Made When I Comes To Being ReadyMake sure your have your money or financing in orderMake sure you have cleared it with your spouse/partnerMake sure you are mentally ready to give up one car for anotherAnd take action when you find a used vehicle that meets your needs27:00 - Close/Wrap-up
The 240Z is an automotive legend. Now, 50 years later there's a 7th generation- the Nissan Z (no more numbers) and it pays homage to the best of what came before. It's powered by a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3-liter V6 and can be had with a 9-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. And well equipped, it's priced at around $41,000 (with shipping, naturally). Tom Voelk offers up full driving impressions of a Performance model (no teases) from outside of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Datsun Z Cars In this episode, I cover the first generations of the Datsun Z cars. The first of these, the 240Z, or Fairlady Z in Japan, was an affordable high-performance car based on the successful rally car, the Datsun 510. Not only did the 240Z offer an amazing driving experience but it was also offerable, costing a little more than the MGB GT. The engine size would increase leading to the 260Z and the 280Z. Unfortunately by the 280ZX generation the car had become a luxury car with a sloppy suspension and had lost its high-performance identity. Luckily a turbocharged version was looking to change that and bring the z car back to its former glory. Thanks for Listening. Music: Finally by Loxbeats https://soundcloud.com/loxbeats? In this episode, Jason and Derek contemplate a recent BringATrailer auction where a 1971 Datsun 240Z sold for $315,000 ($310,000 plus fees.)It’s a well-known thing in the collector car world that rarity is often a multiplier for any inherently desirable car’s value. It’s simple supply and demand. It follows, then, that cars produced in extremely limited numbers, like the Toyota 2000GT, would be expensive, but mass-produced common cars like the Datsun 240Z wouldn’t. Except for one factor; cars that were once common and cheap often suffer from high attrition rates; and when they reach collectible age, nostalgia puts a big price premium. In the case of this 240Z, Derek Tam-Scott postulates that the difference between this car’s rational value (at max, $150,000) and its actual sale price (double that) is due to that effect.Additionally, as Hagerty pointed out in a recent meeting, Japanese cars were largely ignored by Baby Boomers, and as Gen X and Millennials gradually begin to drive collector-car prices, Japanese cars are poised to do well. Jason Cammisa agrees, and adds that cars prevalent in video games (like the Cosworth Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo II and Nissan Skyline) will experience huge values because of their presence there. The boys also discuss cars similar to the 240Z, such as the Nissan Fairlady Z432, a Japanese-market Z with the Prince S20 racing engine from the original Hakosuka Skyline GT-R, the Jaguar E-Type and its Lightweight variants. And Jason recounts a recent story of his Scirocco 16V gathering attention on the streets because it once was such a common shape but disappeared so slowly that people don’t realize the hole in the heart — until they see one and the flood of memories come back. Long story short: despite this unexpected auction result, a car’s value is still related to rarity. But we can add “scarcity” to that for cars that were once common but are now rare. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with. Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them. Brian Jump discusses how to deal with the inevitable- PDR failure and how to make the most of a bad situation. Sung Kangs 240z is an incredible restomod with a skyline engine and wide body accents like no other Z car.
