A wintry collage from one of 2024's breakout stars. As far as crossover electronic success goes, Barry Can't Swim's 2024 scorecard would take some beating. His singles have racked up hundreds of millions of streams, he bagged a Mercury Prize nomination and has the range to both pack out festivals as a DJ and sell out tours worldwide with a string-accented live show. Barely 12 months on from the release of debut album "When Will We Land?", it's fair to say Josh Mannie is one of the most in-demand artists working in dance and electronic music right now, with a follow-up LP nearly done, he says. For RA.968, he pulls in the complete opposite direction from any of that. Sure, there are nods to Mark Leckey and late-night jazz haunts throughout his catalogue, and the ruminative clouds drifting across his signature golden-hour glow do suggest an artist with a sharp grasp on meteorological melancholy. But a beatless collage featuring Suso Sáiz, Slow Attack Ensemble and Lorenzo Senni? It's a surprise, and a welcome one at that. Speckled with exclusive airings of brand-new ambient material, Barry Can't Swim's RA Podcast charts a path from This Mortal Coil to Ryuichi Sakamoto, with a detour through some Linkwood and Anthony Naples deep cuts we've not heard for a good while. (He even includes a Stars of the Lid favourite which namechecks Fulham's home ground, an act of mid-table grace for the diehard Everton fan). RA.968 has the crackle of a frosty night walk set to tape—a holiday gift from one of the most popular acts in the game. 'Tis the season. @barrycantswim Read more at ra.co/podcast/968
Our guest today is Lorenzo Senni, an Italian musician whose beat-less trance shook the electronic music word in the 2010s, and who has worked on film soundtracks for The Challenge, You Will Be With Us in Paradise and, most recently, Atlantide, a brilliant 2021 film about speed boat culture in Venice. We talked about his favourite soundtracks, unfashionable trance, being a gabber voyeur and what comes next. Thanks to the Curtocircuito festival of cinema in Santiago de Compostela for helping with the interview.

Diya Vij started her new job as Associate Curator of Creative Time just last fall, in the midst of the pandemic. She has since announced the first Creative Time Think Tank cohort, which includes La Tanya S. Autry, Caitlin Cherry, Sonia Guiñansaca, Namita Gupta Wiggers, and a number of other engaged voices of the art community. This new initiative invited people to submit proposals for an open call, drawing 200 individual or group applicants. The selected cohort will meet regularly for the next 10 months to reflect on the realities around us and imagine a way forward for the cultural sector.Vij has built a reputation over the years for her work at the Queens Museum, High Line, and in the Commissioner’s Unit of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, where she created the Public Artists in Residence program. She joins me to discuss this unusual think tank and what the collective hopes to accomplish.Music is Lorenzo Senni’s “Move in Silence (Only Speak When It’s Time to Say Checkmate)” from Warp Records.Subscribe to Hyperallergic on Apple Podcasts, and anywhere else you listen to podcasts.

Welcome to our latest guest Alberto Guerrini, known as the powerhouse Gabber Eleganza. DJ, Producer and all-round creator, Alberto started Gabber Eleganza by blogging and reporting about Hardcore and the Rave Culture of the 90s that had engulfed through his teenage years. Fast forward to present-day and Alberto finds himself running his own imprint “Never Sleep” as well as “The Hakke Show”, a performance that has already graced a long list of events such as Berghain, Horst Arts festival and Rye Wax to name a few. In this podcast we discuss the beginning of the first Italian hardcore events as well as the Italian rave scene from strongholds Rome to Bergamo. We discover Gabber Eleganza’s main aim that has taken the gabber culture into very different contexts: shifting public perception of hardcore by offering a different and closer perspective from the inside. We also hear of Alberto’s story and progress from the early days right to the lockdown obstacles, how he met and befriended Lorenzo Senni and Mino Luchena, and insight into his way of living the music he loves. Lorenzo Senni is an experimental musician and visual artist: he’s been described by The Guardian as a “rave poet”. We chat with him about the cover of his latest album "Scacco Matto", out on Warp Records, which shows a picture from John Divola’s "Zuma" series (1978): Lorenzo tells us why he picked that very shot, talking about his main cultural influences and sharing some great anecdotes on his Californian adventure with the legendary photographer.

Legendary electronic artist Suzanne Ciani welcomes Marie Davidson, Sui Zhen, and Lorenzo Senni. Suzanne is based in San Francisco and has been nominated for five Grammy Awards. She was the first woman to score a major Hollywood film, and was the first female voice to be used on a computer game. Marie Davidson is a French-Canadian musician, and one of the world’s most exciting electronic producers. Her most recent record, Working Class Woman, considers “the stresses and strains of operating within the spheres of dance music and club culture”. Lorenzo Senni is a Milan-based electronic music producer, composer and visual artist, and has composed for cinema and theatre. He has even created an installation designed to comfort people in the intensive care unit of a hospital. And Sui Zhen is an experimental pop and performance artist from Melbourne, Australia, whose work focuses on the intersections between human life and technology. Joining from different timezones across the planet, they’ll dicuss what it’s like to release an album, the importance of human interactions with machines, and how they first discovered their beloved synths.

Teki Latex: "Deconstructed Trance Reconstructed is me messing with the concept of tools in electronic music. After falling in love with Lorenzo Senni's brand of drum-less Trance, i assembled some tracks in the same vein, as well as synth-based drum-less Grime tracks with Trance influences and naked synth lead loops from proper Trance tool albums. Then on the other side i collected hard hitting drum tracks from all genres, all totally devoid of melodies in order to stick them on top of the drum-less Trance parts. Then it was like playing a musical construction game and re-contextualizing these synth-based pieces by giving them totally different and unpredictable rhythmic identities. The result is meant to be perceived as one long piece of music with several melodic motifs coming in and out." ------------------------------------------------------------- TRACK LISTING Lorenzo Senni - Elegant, and never tiring Zoltan - Carnet Pearson Sound - Figment Martel Ferdan - Spot on Moleskin - Grand Ballet Matthias Zimmermann - Reginald Mauxtik - Tool 16 MATRiXXMAN - Protocol Jones & Stephenson - The First Rebirth 99Letters - Lazer Beam Ellen Allien - Sehnsucht Randomer - Percussion Workout 2 Slackk - Kit & Holly Massacooramaan - Toxoplasm Patrick Seeker - Tool 13 Wiley - Ice Rink Truncate - Dial MikeQ - The Ha Dub Rewerk’d Patrick Seeker - Tool 12 Mike Midnight - Shanked up Lorenzo Senni - Superimpositions Rabit - Thug Rotorvator Crime Mob - Ellenwood Area Girl Unit - Club Rez Patrick Seeker - Tool 15
