In 2010, Justin Maurer's band CLOROX GIRLS fell apart and he found himself living in his uncle's attic and working as a dental supply salesman in Long Beach, California. He was inspired after seeing James Carman's band IMAGES play a killer set at notorious longshoreman dive Harold's Place in San Pedro.  Harold's bartenders were known to deal trucker speed from behind the bar as well as brandish a sawed off shotgun if any of their patrons got out of line. Being the diviest of Pacific Avenue's drag of working class dive bars, they allowed locals to throw their own punk shows.  Justin made the pilgrimage across the Vincent Thomas Bridge to check out one of these shows and was blown away by IMAGES, a local band who took equal inspiration from late 70s LA punk as well as poppier UK punk like THE BUZZCOCKS.  The vocal harmonies were great and a particular lefty drummer who played his snare and floortom with his arms crossed - one James Carman - was singing lead vocals and backing vocals and harmonies in a way that caught Justin pleasantly off guard.  A few weeks later Justin bought a round of $1 beers for the IMAGES boys at Fern's, one of Long Beach's diviest on East 4th Street, but before taking their first sip they were chucked out by the doorman because every single member of IMAGES was all under 21.  Justin soon produced a music video for the boys (“Frustration”, directed by Vim Crony), and also asked James if he would be up for joining a new band.   Back in Long Beach, Justin and another new friend Cezar Mora, who had played in local bands THE SWITCHUPS and THE BAD MACHINE, were working on a project called LOS LONG BEACH BOYS, a Beach Boys cover band that sung in Spanish.  They hoped to rake in the big bucks at swap meets and lowrider car shows.  Translating and harmonizing an entire Beach Boys set in Spanish proved to be quite the challenge, and Justin and Cezar decided to write originals instead.   James invited his childhood friend Johnny Reyes to audition on bass at LA DRUGZ' first band practice at his parents' house in Carson.  The guys liked his yellow BUZZCOCKS t-shirt, his sense of humor and his mod hairstyle, so he was in.  They celebrated with homemade pancit and lumpia from James' mom. At practice, James mentioned that the best music was like a drug and the name LA DRUGS was pitched.  They looked it up and it seemed there was already a band called LA DRUGS from Boston. And they sucked. The boys decided to differentiate themselves by spelling it with a Z as an homage to THE PLUGZ.  LA DRUGZ began to gig around the South Bay, Orange County and Los Angeles playing spots like The Redwood, The Continental Room, Harold's, The Observatory, Alex's Bar and Vince Lombardi High School (VLHS). They recorded the OUTSIDE PLACE EP with Kid Kevin of CALIMUCHO  in San Pedro and approached Tim and Mark Janchar at HOVERCRAFT RECORDS in Portland, Oregon about releasing it.  The brothers dug it and said yes!  A westcoast tour was promptly arranged around the release of the record and would take the boys north to Sacramento, Oakland, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.  In Seattle, Kurt Bloch of THE FASTBACKS joined them onstage for a raucous cover of “You're Gonna Miss Me” by 13th Floor Elevators.  The following year of 2015 took the boys out on the road with London's FAT WHITE FAMILY where they kicked off at storied L.A. Venue The Troubadour,  and toured all the way out to  Austin, Texas.  After ripping it up at the final show of their tour at The Chapel in San Francisco, both bands' vans were broken into at the Travel Lodge Motel on Market Street and Valencia where over $20K of gear was stolen along with both bands' suitcases of clothing.  FAT WHITE FAMILY flew back to the UK all wearing LA DRUGZ t-shirts which was the only clean item of clothing each member now owned.  The ALL BURNED DOWN EP was the followup and all things were quiet on the western front UNTIL NOW.   James Carman formed THE REFLECTORS,

It's been called the most shocking American youth movement in history. When it stormed out of the gates in the 1970s, punk rock told the world that the way things are is unacceptable. The people that defined the scene spit in the face of conformity and the social order, and they did it with humor, irreverence and musical brutality. The punk scene in Los Angeles was (and still is) home to some of the most iconic personalities of the genre, and was led by bands that defined it as they was simultaneously transcending it. Here in TOP TEN L.A. Tony Marsico is a true rock n roll legend. The outstanding bass player and songwriter moved from Philadelphia to Los Angeles and it didn't take long for him to find himself in The Plugz, a band that was part of a blossoming punk scene in the late seventies. When The Plugz spilt up, he stayed with fellow members and formed Cruzados, who were signed to Arista Records by the great Clive Davis. He went on to play with Matthew Sweet for ten years and has played with numerous bands and on numerous records with multiple artists, including his own lounge band, The Martini Kings, who have released 25 albums. He has also written four books and produced two films and did we mention that Tony reformed Cruzados and they sound as great as ever. Fun guest with a true rock n roller, enjoy! Good morning from Chinatown NYC, where there are no avocados in my 42-square foot (including counters and all appliances, listen, it's like walking a gang plank) kitchen, just a COVID test in-progress and some excellent coffee from Panther Coffee, based out of Miami. The owners, Joel and Leticia Pollock, are friends from the iteration of my life after Los Angeles, we met them in Portland, from whence they decamped for Miami, to open a coffee roasting business.“Nency, Nency, can you write something for us?” This is Leticia - and here I am badly botching her Brazilian accent - asking back in 2009 that I write to the local licensing bureau explaining what coffee roasting was, the idea being totally foreign and apparently causing officials to think someone was trying to burn down the city. I did; Panther opened in 2010 and now has something like four million locations in Miami (okay, six). You should go. We are going back further today! To 1990, when my daughter was less than a year old and I saw two young women my age pushing baby strollers past my house on the street that led up to the Hollywood Reservoir. Stay to the end for a sweet addendum. Two corrections: Charlie's first band was the Plugz. (The Cruzados were second.) And toward the end I accidentally say “mash the garlic” when of course I mean, mash the avocado. Also: COVID, negative.Episode notes: Charlie Quintana, whose first and only job besides as a drummer was delivering flowers for one day in his native El Paso. He was sixteen when the band he formed and The Plugz (video) became successful. Charlie went on to become part of the Cruzados, The Havalinas and other bands, and toured and/or recorded with Bon Dylan, Social Distortion, John Doe, Cracker, Joan Osborne and, if I am not mistaken, the Gin Blossoms. I remember (though I am finding no confirmation of) this because sometimes when Charlie played in Los Angeles he would nab me some tickets, and when the Wallflowers played at the Greek Theater, lead singer Jakob Dylan announced (I am not kidding here), “This goes out to Nancy,” before launching into, “One Headlight.” (I had told Charlie I loved the song.) Maybe I'm wrong! But that's my story and I'm sticking to it.Well lookie here, I found some audio of “Meet the Neighbors.” (Or you can read it.)“Charlie Quintana, drummer for the Plugz and Social Distortion, dies at 56,” by Randy Lewis (Los Angeles Times)“Taking My Ex Back In (for His Own Good),” by Nancy Rommelmann (New York Times Modern Love)Guacamole, adapted from Charlie Quintana* 5 ripe avocados* Salt* One-half yellow onion, chopped small* 2 - 3 jalapenos, chopped small, leave some seeds* Handful of cilantro, chopped* Juice of 2 - 3 limesMash the avocado and salt. The Plugz fusionó el espíritu del punk y la música latina. La banda se formó en 1977 y fue contemporánea de las bandas que aparecen en la película The Decline of Western Civilization.

In this interview, we discuss how this project came to be and dive into some of the famous stories from Bob's time in London in the ‘60s, like his infamous on-camera argument with folk-singer Donovan and the time he was called a “Judas” for going electric. We discuss Bob's return to London in the early ‘90s for the World Gone Wrong album, and then we move to New York for a few stories, like his legendary 1984 appearance on Late Night with David Letterman with the punk rock band the Plugz. Back by popular demand (and we don't use the word demand lightly-you know who you are) we've returned from hiatus to bring you another season of fascinating guests and a look at how we're navigating current conditions, as we continue on our mission to keep rock ‘n roll alive. As the pandemic drags on, we ride the roller coaster of emotions and discuss plans for our next writing/recording sessions...if we can just book some studio time. Meanwhile, we're pleased to share our conversation with a guy who has worn many hats during his long music career. Tony Marsico grew up in a family of sandwich makers just outside of Philadelphia. His biggest influence might be his older brother Frank, a virtuoso jazz drummer. Tony's taste however ran more toward the Ramones and after cutting his teeth in many a Holiday Inn playing covers, he made the move West in 1980 and entered the burgeoning LA punk scene in the seminal band, The Plugz. The group evolved and became The Cruzados, releasing two successful records on Arista and touring extensively around the world, including epic arena support slots with Fleetwood Mac and INXS. When the ride was over Tony became a much sought after sideman, thumping his bass for legends like Dr. John, Neil Young, Roger Daltry and a singer/songwriter called Bob Dylan, on an iconic TV appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. He has also led a working band in the Socal area for years, a swinging little jazz outfit called the Martini Kings. He's an author, composer, hustler, survivor and a friend who was gracious enough to appear on our Rock-a-thon and again with us here. Join us as he tells his tales and offers sage advice from the road. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/7HorseNation/support

Beginning in March of 2020, while most of the world was in lockdown mode due to COVID, Daniel Romano did something truly remarkable: He began releasing an album nearly every week on his Bandcamp page. On this week's Fretboard Journal Podcast, we talk to the Canadian musician about his prolific output this year: from a track-by-track re-creation of Bob Dylan's Infidels album played as if the Plugz were Dylan's backing band, to his British folk-inspired Alias Ensemble album, and all points in-between. We hear about some of the self-imposed rules he gives himself when recording, his current gear of choice, his forthcoming (ninth) album for 2020, 'How Ill Thy World Is Ordered' (out Sept. 18, 2020 on You've Changed Records) and a lot more. Romano is one of our favorite musicians and it was great to get a peek at his creative process. THE BRAT "Pledge Of Allegiance" Pledge Of Allegiance Burger Records (2019) https://burgerrecords.11spot.com/the-brat-pledge-of-allegiance.html The Brat was a Chicano punk rock ensemble originating from the barrios of the East Los Angeles, California. Its three core members consisted of lead singer Teresa Covarrubias, lead guitarist Rudy Medina, and alternate lead & rhythm guitar player Sid Medina. From their conception in 1979 to their eventual break-up in 1985, The Brat contributed to the customization and inter-meshing of multiple musical and cultural models that culminated in a distinct East Los Angeles, Chicano punk sound. Hard-working and politically-conscious, The Brat nurtured a DIY punk scene, which in East L.A. was defined by unofficial venues and backyard shows because the wealthier West L.A. club owners controlled the popular Westside market. By the time the famous Club Vex was founded in 1980 by Los Illegals frontman Willie Herron, who desired an official venue to host East L.A.'s numerous underrated bands, who were mostly Chicano, The Brat had become one of the best known acts in the area. In late 1980 The Brat was signed as the flagship band to Fatima Records, an upstart new label launched by another local punk group, The Plugz. This collaboration resulted in The Brat's only recorded album, the EP Attitudes, a five-song collection of some of their popular originals featuring Covarrubias' aggressive, yet melodic, punk vocals critiquing social inequality and Rudy Medina (aka "Rudy Brat") and his urgent guitar hooks played over a reggae pop-punk beat. The Brat never found breakthrough success and remained an underground East L.A. Chicano act until breaking up in the late '80s. This cassingle features three tracks; one new song, one old, and one remix.
