Kishore Mahbubani is widely regarded as one of Asia's most well-known diplomats, commentators, and strategic analysts. Having grown up in poverty in Singapore in the 1950s, however, there was nothing preordained about Mahbubani's success. But over the course of the second half of the twentieth century, he would go on to become one of the most recognizable and revered diplomats of his generation.Mahbubani served in Cambodia, Malaysia, and the United States. He was Permanent Secretary at the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs and twice served as the country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He later served as founding dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.Mahbubani chronicles his life journey in a new memoir titled, Living the Asian Century: An Undiplomatic Memoir.Mahbubani's journey mirrors Singapore's own metamorphosis and the book sheds equal light on Mahbubani's life as it does the Asian country's own improbable evolution. To talk more about the book, Kishore Mahbubani joins Milan on the podcast this week. They discuss Kishore's childhood poverty, his “Indian soul,” and his lifelong interactions with former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Plus, Milan and Kishore discuss the explosion of cultural self-confidence in Asia and what this means for the emerging world order.Episode notes:1. We welcome back to Kopi Time Kishore Mahbubani, distinguished diplomat, academic, and writer on geopolitics. Our conversation, recorded in Mumbai, kicks off with India’s promise and challenges vis-à-vis the US and China, with the former turning increasingly protectionist and latter facing a myriad of domestic and external challenges. Mahbubani sees no room for emotion in geopolitics, expecting to see India follow its pragmatic instincts to pursue industrialisation with capital and technology from both superpowers. We then discuss Trump 2.0, the future of multilateralism, and Asia’s place in the great power rivalry. Always sharp and insightful.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If the 20th century was the American Century then, for Kishore Mahbubani, the controversial Singaporean writer and diplomat, the 21st century is the Asian Century. In his new memoir, Living the Asian Century, Mahbubani - Singapore's longtime permanent representative at the United Nations - offers what he calls an “undiplomatic memoir” of Singapore's rise from an impoverished outlay of the British empire into the world's wealthiest country. It's quite a story and Mahbubani tells it in his own bluntly undiplomatic way. Kishore Mahbubani is a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS). Mr Mahbubani has been privileged to enjoy two distinct careers, in diplomacy (1971 to 2004) and in academia (2004 to 2019). He is a prolific writer who has spoken in many corners of the world. In diplomacy, he was with the Singapore Foreign Service for 33 years (1971 to 2004). He had postings in Cambodia, Malaysia, Washington DC and New York, where he twice was Singapore's Ambassador to the UN and served as President of the UN Security Council in January 2001 and May 2002. He was Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Ministry from 1993 to 1998. As a result of his excellent performance in his diplomatic career, he was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Gold) by the Singapore Government in 1998. Mr Mahbubani joined academia in 2004, when he was appointed the Founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKY School), NUS. He was Dean from 2004 to 2017, and a Professor in the Practice of Public Policy from 2006 to 2019. In April 2019, he was elected as an honorary international member to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which has honoured distinguished thinkers, including several of America's founding fathers, since 1780. Mr Mahbubani was awarded the President's Scholarship in 1967. He graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Philosophy from the University of Singapore in 1971. From Dalhousie University, Canada, he received a Master's degree in Philosophy in 1976 and an honorary doctorate in 1995. He spent a year as a fellow at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University from 1991 to 1992. He has achieved several “firsts” in his two careers. He was the Founding Dean of the LKY School, the founding Director of the Civil Service College, the first Singapore Ambassador to serve on the UN Security Council, the first Singaporean to publish articles in globally renowned journals and newspapers like Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the New York Times and the Financial Times and co-authored articles with distinguished global thought leaders like Kofi Annan, Klaus Schwab and Larry Summers. Mr Mahbubani has never shied away from taking on new challenges. He is also a prolific author, having published nine books: Can Asians Think?; Beyond the Age of Innocence; The New Asian Hemisphere; The Great Convergence; Can Singapore Survive?; The ASEAN Miracle (co-authored with Jeffery Sng); Has the West Lost It?; Has China Won?; and The Asian 21st Century, an open access book which has received over 3 million downloads. His memoir, Living the Asian Century, will be released in August 2024. Mr Mahbubani has received significant international recognition for his many accomplishments. The Foreign Policy Association Medal was awarded to him in New York in June 2004 with the following opening words in the citation: “A gifted diplomat, a student of history and philosophy, a provocative writer and an intuitive thinker”. He was listed as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines in September 2005, and included in the March 2009 Financial Times list of Top 50 individuals who would shape the debate on the future of capitalism. He was selected as one of Foreign Policy's Top Global Thinkers in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, he was described as “the muse of the Asian century”. He was selected by Prospect magazine as one of the top 50 world thinkers for 2014.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In this episode, we're pleased to have had the opportunity to talk to Kishore Mahbubani, a Singaporean former diplomat who was Singapore's representative to the UN in the 1980s and 1990s, and later Dean at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at National University of Singapore. Mahbubani is the author of ten books on Asia and the world, most recently Living the Asian Century (2024).Though the book has a broad scope, we focused more generally on China in this conversation, given our remit. Mahbubani talked about the legacy of colonialism in Asia; how Singapore became a success story; China's model of non-interference in the region; its peaceful intentions overseas and at home; and anti-China bias in the West — though we pushed back on all points in a lively discussion. The China Books Podcast is a companion of China Books Review, a project of Asia Society's Center on U.S.-China Relations and The Wire, a digital business platform that also publishes The Wire China. Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore, returns to Kopi Time to give his take on China-US relationship, the war in Ukraine and its many facets, and where Asean and India stand in all this. The ever erudite former career diplomat pulls no punches, pointing out poor national strategies, short-term oriented decision making, and hypocrisy on foreign and economic policy across industrialized economies.  He worries about US presidential elections next year, although he sees little course correction on US policy toward China, regardless of the outcome. The conflict in Ukraine, however, could be profoundly affected by the US election outcomes. Mr Mahbubani also weighs in on China's geo-strategic response so far, room for cooperation on climate change, the expansion of Brics, and the outlook for Aaean.  We end with a a prognosis on Singapore. Abstract: Studying long-term biological processes such as the colonization of aging epithelia by somatic mutant clones has been slowed by the lack of suitable culture systems. Here we describe epithelioids, a facile, cost-effective method of culturing multiple mouse and human epithelia. Esophageal epithelioids self-maintain without passaging for at least a year, recapitulating the 3D structure, cell dynamics, transcriptome, and genomic stability of the esophagus. Live imaging over 5 months showed epithelioids replicate in vivo cell dynamics. Epithelioids enable the study of cell competition and mutant selection in 3D epithelia, and how anti-cancer treatments modulate the competition between transformed and wild type cells. Epithelioids are a novel method with a wide range of applications in epithelial tissues, particularly the study of long term processes, that cannot be accessed using other culture models. Kishore Mahbubani, veteran expert on geopolitics and presently Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, talks about the urgent need for constructive engagement with China to avoid the risk of a lose-lose outcome for the world. A pragmatic, trade-off oriented strategy to deal with China would help achieve peace and prosperity for all, while ideologically-driven confrontations would only keep escalating matters, in his view. As always erudite, Mahbubani spans global history and geography to draw in lessons for policy makers and non-government observers alike.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After a hiatus, we return with a brief introduction to the thought and influence of JA Hobson, whose 1902 work "Imperialism" forms the intellectual pivot around which Pettis & Klein's "Trade Wars Are Class Wars" (2020, Yale University Press) presents its central thesis: inequality within countries intensifies trade conflicts between nations. This is the first in a multi-part discussion on Pettis & Klein's thoughtful book, a polemical take on the roots and dangers of global trade imbalances. Connecting this research to our last discussion on Mahbubani, we ask: How does the macroeconomic picture painted by Pettis & Klein contribute to our understanding of the growing rivalry between the US and China? Jason King provides the music you hear in After the 'End of History.'  After the 'End of History' is part of the Hawks & Sparrows project.

Tudo muda no mercado imobiliário. Menos os franceses que continuam a apostar na pedra da casinha, um refúgio inestimável sobretudo nestes tempos de pandemia, nota, L'OBS.

Episode XVIII takes a detour from Mahbubani's "Has China Won?" and looks closely at the military side of the burgeoning strategic conflict between the American hegemon and its rival to the East. Focusing on three texts by a group of naval experts, we discuss how Alfred T. Mahan has been central to China's grand strategy for the Pacific and how its military planners' view of the First Island chain, a simple but unfortunate geospatial reality, forms a critical aspect of their conception of China's place in the world. Finally, to Mahbubani's question, "Can the US make U-Turns?" we test the question against military expenditures on outdated platforms and weapons systems in the Pacific. We head into our final discussion on "Has China Won?" by sharing some thoughts on how these military-strategic works have reframed our earlier, perhaps overly optimistic view of China's successes. On the next episode, we'll continue exploring that question through the lens of economics, centrally focused on Pettis and Klein's "Trade Wars are Class Wars." Works under discussion: Michael J. Holmes: Red Star Over the PacificJerry Hendrix: At What Cost a Carrier?  Thanks for listening. Jason King provides the music you hear in After the 'End of History.'

Part II drills into Mahbubani's discussion of "how other countries will choose" in the coming showdown between China, a burgeoning regional hegemon, and the United States, the ostensibly failing empire. From there we review last year's debate between Mahbubani and John Mearsheimer which took place virtually, in the midst of the pandemic's first wave, at the Center for Independent Study. We're particularly interested in how each thinker frames his views on military conflict, counterbalancing and alliance building. We also share some thoughts on who won the debate, noting the stark differences in outlook -- somewhat panglossian in Kishore's case; hardcore realist in John's -- and revisit the ideas of our old friend Christopher Layne, whose recent work in Foreign Affairs sheds classical neorealist light on the debate. Join us next week for a discussion on Pettis and Klein's "Trade Wars are Class Wars." Jason King provides the music you hear in After the 'End of History.'

Episode 16: Sacred Cows, Institutional OrthodoxiesKishore Mahbubani, author of last year's "Has China Won? The Chinese Challenge to American Primacy," is an academic and diplomat, serving as Singapore's delegate to the UN for over ten years. On this week's episode of After the 'End of History' we introduce his work on the stakes of China's rise, which presents an "inevitable but avoidable" clash vis a vis American hegemony. It should be clear by the end of this week's discussion -- the first part of three -- that he answers his title's question with a resounding yes, challenging the institutional orthodoxies of American foreign policy thought. Mahbubani believes that America lacks the strategic vision necessary to engage an undeniably rising China in a rational and geopolitically productive manner. But, perhaps more damning, it also behaves inflexibly, failing to temper its ingrained "exceptionalist" thinking to concede a second-place or even equal position of economic, military and political power in the world. This failure to make "U-Turns," among other problems in American foreign policy with respect to China, provides the basis of our discussion this week. Our material for this series of conversations also includes a debate between Mahbubani and John Mearsheimer. The third part will consider the recent economic work of Pettis & Klein, whose acclaimed "Trade Wars are Class Wars"  helps makes sense of the rise of inequality in the age of globalization, a question that places China's steady integration into the international market front and center. Thanks to Jason King, who provides the music that you hear on After the 'End of History.'

Vivek then moves on to provide some much needed context on the months-long protests in Hong Kong, dubbed the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (Anti-ELAB) movement. This explanation includes how it started, what his participation in the protests has been from its beginning, the historic scale of the demonstrations, and the overall character and spirit of the resistance Hongkongers are actively engaging in against their government (both locally and from mainland China). Vivek does a spectacular job sussing out the nuances of this movement, as Western media tends to overly-simplify and flatten the nature of this movement in countless ways, with outside supporters and detractors of this protest movement focusing on very specific details that only serve to reinforce each of their respective narratives on the aims of the movement. As someone who understands and speaks fluent Cantonese and English, Vivek is able to more fully explain how this leaderless movement continues to organize itself, including how tactics have been developed to effectively counter increasingly violent and intrusive police repression, as well as what to make of the seemingly pro-American and pro-British displays by demonstrators within the protests. Vivek ends this discussion by elaborating on the recent District Council election on November 24th, in which "pro-democracy candidates swept aside their pro-establishment rivals in a political tsunami." (http://bit.ly/2Yu1NBb) What does this election mean for the future of the movement? Vivek gives us an indication what that may be in this interview.  Vivek Mahbubani is a Hong Kong-bred bilingual stand-up comedian performing in both Cantonese and English. Having been crowned the Funniest Person (in Chinese) in Hong Kong in 2007 followed by his victory in the English category at the Hong Kong International Comedy Competition in 2008, Vivek has had the opportunity to take his sense of humor all over the world including Hong Kong, China, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Australia, Canada and USA.  Episode Notes: - Learn more about Vivek: https://funnyvivek.com - Read his article ‘How comedy and protests helped me find my Hong Kong identity’: http://bit.ly/2YuKWOP - Vivek sent me this photo timeline of the protests in Hong Kong: http://bit.ly/38kDJW8 - Read more about the District Council election: http://bit.ly/2Yu1NBb - The songs featured in this episode are “Cbtw” and “Froov” by Dr. Doppler from the album Flips & Bumps. Kishore Mahbubani is a living legend when we deal with Southeast Asia, India, and ASEAN. He is one the brightest mind, and I had the honor of having him in my podcast. Kishore Mahbubani has been a supporter of a significant role of India in ASEAN, but the issue, according to his judgment, is very delicate. There are problems in the short term and great opportunities in the long term. In the short term, ASEAN got disappointed towards India because it didn’t join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. India is domestically preoccupied with various challenges, and it can’t divert its attention to other goals. However, the history showed us that, until the 18th century, the biggest economies in the world were China and India, and only in the last two centuries the West has taken off the two Asian nations. China has come back very fast, and India will come back slowly but steadily. In 2050, China will be the first economic power, and India will be number two. Professor Mahbubani also speaks about ASEAN and how, routinely, it has been considered as a failing and declining organization. Two years ago, when Indian outperformed China, western media were jubilating. This year, despite ASEAN has slowed a bit, is performing better than India. No western media took note of it. Despite regular ups and downs, ASEAN forward trajectory has not stopped. Professor Mahbubani considers ASEAN as the second most successful international organization in the world while he believes the EU the best one. ASEAN and EU, according to Mahbubani, have a natural partnership. However, there is a caveat: EU must treat ASEAN with respect. The case of the palm oil and the various sanctions EU is targeting ASEAN countries are the brightest examples of a western organization trying to patronize over different political and economic cultures.

#K008TREPRENEUR #AskKongtrepreneurShow #Kongtrepreneur

In his new book The Great Convergence: Asia, the West, and the Logic of One World, he argues that the world has seen more positive change in the past 30 years than in the 300 that preceded it. The global middle class is growing. Poverty levels have fallen;  major wars have decreased and people are better educated and better informed. The world is connected in new ways.
