Meet Sen. Bob Duff, Senate Majority Leader in Connecticut

Senator Bob Duff is a state senator from Connecticut and has been the Majority Leader since 2015.  Bob's Norwalk family ties go back five generations. His passion for public service began at the age of eight. That's when Bob voiced his concerns for the future of Duffy Field to then-mayor William Collins. Today, we still have Duffy Field — now renamed Veterans Park. Since joining the legislature, Bob has been a tireless advocate for job creation in Connecticut. Bob has also earned a reputation as a consumer watchdog. As Chair of the legislature's Housing Committee, he created the state's first Housing Trust Fund to build more affordable housing in Connecticut. As Chair of the Banking Committee, Bob worked to safeguard Connecticut homeowners from the ravages of predatory lending by creating a package of first-in-the-nation reforms to reduce the number of home foreclosures in the state. Included was the foreclosure mediation program, Mortgage Crisis Job Training Program (the first iteration to the federally recognized and nationally acclaimed Platform to Employment program) to help those unemployed or underemployed avoid foreclosure and a law that provides tools to municipalities ensuring lenders maintain their vacant properties.  Bob's consumer advocacy continued as he went on to Chair the Energy and Technology Committee. As Chair, Bob championed two major pieces of energy legislation which taken together implement a new comprehensive energy strategy for Connecticut: restructuring support for renewable sources of electricity to provide for cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy for consumers and businesses. Bob also supported the nation's first cybersecurity report by a state government relating to safeguarding our electric grid and water utilities.  In addition, the Senate Democratic caucus with Bob has achieved numerous legislative victories. Most recently, the caucus passed legislation standing up for DREAMers, the National Popular Vote, net neutrality, data privacy, health care access, Time's Up, gun safety, LGBTQ rights, equal pay for equal work, raising the minimum wage and Paid Family Medical Leave. Bob has also been involved with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) serving on both the Foundation Board and Nominating Committee and active in their leadership programs. Throughout his legislative career, Bob has been honored by The Workplace Inc., AARP of Connecticut, the Lockwood-Matthews Mansion Museum, the Save Cranbury Association, Side-by-Side Charter School, the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, Greater Stamford Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Women's Business Development Council, the Maritime Aquarium, the Norwalk NAACP, the Norwalk Marching Bears, Inc., Action for Bridgeport Community Development and the Norwalk Public Schools Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee. After graduating Norwalk Public Schools, Bob earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Lynchburg College in Virginia. There, Bob honed his political skills as a student senator, campus leader and intern for then-U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT). Bob, his wife, Tracey, and their two children live on Toilsome Avenue in Norwalk with their rescue dog, Molly.

Diamondback terrapins, a species of small turtle along the coastline and marsh of Long Island Sound were once near extinction, but they've made a great comeback in our state. This tenacious little guy is the only turtle that lives in brackish waters - a mix of fresh and saltwater. And we are right in the middle of their migratory season. Andrew N. Mais was nominated by Governor Ned Lamont to be Connecticut's 33rd Insurance Commissioner. Mais is President-Elect and has served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners since 2021. He currently serves on the International Relations, Property & Casualty, and Financial Regulation Standards committees. He also serves on the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) Macroprudential and Executive Committees and on their Insurance Capital Standards Task Force. The IAIS is the international standard-setting body responsible for developing and assisting in the supervision of the insurance sector. Mais has led discussions in several forums on race, diversity, and inclusion at the state level and within the insurance industry and in insurance practices. He has also joined the efforts led by Governor Ned Lamont and Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz to address social inequities in Connecticut, including the Council on Women and Girls and cultural competency initiatives. Mais is also Co-Chair of the NAIC's Special Executive Committee on Race and Insurance, charged with conducting research and analyzing issues of diversity and inclusion within the insurance sector. Mais previously was a member of Deloitte's Center for Financial Services, providing industry-leading thought leadership and insight on US and international regulatory affairs. Prior to that, he was a Director at the New York State Insurance Department. There he served four governors as part of the Department's senior leadership team through numerous events including the financial crisis of 2008 and major state and federal changes in health insurance regulations and laws. Even outside the government, Mais dedicated much of his life to public service. He most recently served as chair of the Council on Ethics for the town of Wilton, CT, where he lives. Other recent service includes the Maritime Aquarium of Norwalk; the American Red Cross; the Board of Finance of the Town of Wilton; and the Rotary Club of Wilton.  Highlights from the Show Commissioner Mais opened with the mentality that they are open at the Department, and that we are all in this together across the industry He believes we do not do a good job marketing ourselves as an industry and how much it has to offer people He has been on the regulator side through some major challenges in the industry, including the Great Financial Crisis and COVID Thinking about how to be innovative and supportive of change, you have to start at the core mission of regulators to protect consumers and the industry to protect people and help them recover from loss Regulators also have to protect competition and health in the market, and that takes innovation A precursor of innovation is a willingness and appetite to fail He's seeing a movement to reduce friction, like easier Life insurance pre-underwriting processes to a move to risk mitigation like we're seeing on Cyber The Department in Connecticut is keeping this in mind as they consider the flexibility they need to support these efforts Connecticut has been very collaborative and supportive of innovation in the industry, which Commissioner Mais sees as a function of a number of things, including the level of education in the state, the amount of insurance activity in the state, decisions of the administration to collaborate across departments and with business, etc Climate Change is on his mind, given that CT has the second highest concentration of coastal insured property in the country, so he's not just looking at access to insurance but also efforts to reduce exposure through smarter building decisions, mitigating actions, etc. States, being independent of each other and not part of a federal regulatory system, are all experimenting, trying things, and sharing their experience with each other As President-elect of the NAIC, Commissioner Mais sees the federated model of state regulation being a big contributor to the health and strength of the industry He leaves with the idea of Collaboration and working together as central to the future of the industry; an us vs. them mentality will not work That means every party needs to come together – consumers, companies, regulators – and see how we can get to Yes on ideas that are of genuine benefit in helping people get protected This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance Volume III. The Wild and Wonderful World of Mammals Mammals may be the most diverse group of vertebrates that have ever lived. (Don't tell the mollusk enthusiasts over at Cephalopod Week.) Many people share their homes with another mammal as a pet, like a dog or cat. The largest creatures on earth are mammals: Ocean-dwelling blue whales are the biggest animals that have ever lived, and African elephants are the biggest animals on land. And lest we forget, humans, too, are mammals. The history and diversity of mammalians is the subject of a new book by paleontologist Steve Brusatte, “The Rise and Reign of the Mammals.” Steve joins Ira to talk about why mammals have been so successful over the years, and why extinct mammals deserve as much love as the beloved dinosaurs.  A Squid-tastic Night Out  How do you fossilize a squishy squid? Do octopuses see in color, and do they have arms or tentacles? Which came first, the hard-shelled nautilus or the soft-bodied octopus, squid, or cuttlefish? And what does ‘cephalopod' mean, anyhow?   This week, Ira ventured to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut for a special Cephalopod Week celebration. He was joined by experts Barrett Christie, the director of animal husbandry for the Maritime Aquarium, and Christopher Whalen, a postdoctoral researcher and invertebrate paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.  They also discussed the challenges of caring for cephalopods in an aquarium environment, some of the amazing abilities of these animals, and what it's like to discover a previously unknown cephalopod genus and species in fossilized material stored in museum archives. Together, they tackled audience cephalopod questions large, small, and multi-armed.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Nia's love of marine science continued on through college and a gap year working at the Maritime Aquarium in Connecticut, and now she studies stress tolerance in corals in Palau.  Some of things we talk about in this episode include how to identify a good mentorship network, the importance of prioritizing your own well-being, how being the first Black graduate student at Hopkins has influenced Nia's experiences in grad school, and how creating one's own definition of success can help us not compare ourselves to others as much, and thereby lead to greater satisfaction and more happiness.
