POPULARITY
Everyone has a Batman opinion. Inside your imagination is a definitive Batman: a Batman who should behave this way, and a Batman who should not behave that way. Your tight grip on your Batman is why Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's carefully considered Absolute Batman works so damn well. They fully understand and appreciate how the character has congealed over the last eight decades into a rock-solid idea. For the last eight months, alongside collaborators like Gabriel H. Walta, Marcos Martín, Frank Martin, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles, Snyder and Dragotta have chipped away at the quintessential Dark Knight. They've altered elements of his origin, removed his social position, and rearranged his relationship with his rogues. Their Absolute Batman is a Bruce Wayne in motion, moving toward the impenetrable idea in your head, but struggling to match it. Here is a character growing into something, evolving into a recognizable hero for 2025. After confronting Mr. Freeze in issues seven and eight and facing the final days of Matches Malone, Bruce Wayne must reassess his war on Gotham City crime. What lessons did he learn from that awful day at The Zoo? Do his nights as Batman honor his father's sacrifice? As he fights to find himself, a grotesque demonic doppelganger appears - Bane, the nineties sensation who once broke a bat from another universe. FOC for Absolute Batman #9 is today (5/19/25)! Tell your retailers to order a copy for ya. With this comic, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta have cooked an undeniable banquet. As the best alternate reality stories should, they've weaponized your knowledge of these characters against you, subverting in radically compelling ways, while delivering what should never be manipulated. Today's podcast features two conversations. Up first, Scott Snyder joins us for a lengthy look back at the last eight months of Absolute Batman. We discuss Bruce Wayne's continuing development into the Dark Knight, his complex relationship with Joe Chill, his father's killer, and why Bane had to arrive sooner rather than later. Secondly, Nick Dragotta pops in for a conversation about his ultra chonky Bane design, and how what we've seen so far is only a hint of his true monstrosity. Absolute Batman #9 will finally arrive in stores, courtesy of DC Comics, on June 11th. Follow Scott Snyder on Bluesky and Instagram, and subscribe to his Substack. Follow Nick Dragotta on Bluesky and Instagram. This Week's Sponsor We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticAnalytic Dreamz dives into "Batman: Arkham Shadow," released on October 21, 2024, as a sequel to Arkham Origins. Set in Gotham's Blackgate Penitentiary during a Fourth of July crisis, the game features The Rat King as the main antagonist leading a chaos-spreading cult. Experience classic Arkham combat adapted for VR, with gesture-based attacks, stealth, and detective mode through Metroidvania-style exploration. Unique gameplay includes switching between Batman and Bruce Wayne's undercover persona, Matches Malone, in a first-person perspective. The voice cast includes Roger Craig Smith as Batman, alongside Troy Baker, Elijah Wood, and Tara Strong. Exclusively on Meta Quest 3 & 3S, developed by Camouflaj with Rocksteady's support, it's free with Quest 3/3S until April 30, 2025. Despite some launch bugs, it's celebrated for its VR immersion, selling over a million copies by February 2025, and receiving an 87/100 on Metacritic. However, exclusivity and technical issues have sparked controversy. Analytic Dreamz discusses the game's impact on the VR market, potential future titles, and whether it sets a new standard for VR gaming. Everyone knows that Batman is also billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne. But what most people outside of Batman comics fans don't know is that Batman has another alter ego: two-bit mobster Matches Malone, an identity Batman uses to infiltrate the mob. This week, we're reading three stories where Batman uses the Matches identity: an arc that brings a character in from the Animated Series universe to the main DC Comics canon, a three issue story where one of comics' most celebrated modern writers takes on Batman, and a story set in the animated series universe that leaves a dangling plot thread we wish had been picked up. Lock-Up (Detective Comics V.1 # 697-699) Close Before Striking (Batman V.1 # 588-590) Playing With Matches (Batman Adventures V.2 # 5-8) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

The Good Brothers once again return to the future aka "50 years from now, whenever now is" as they pick up where they left off in their Batman Beyond reviews. Season 2 of the Future Dark Knight's show wraps up with the origins of Bruce's four-legged best friend and protector, Ace in the episode "Ace In The Hole." The hosts discuss a myriad of things including steroid-infused canines, the nuances of Kevin Conroy's brilliant performance, how the music for Beyond stands out after a long layoff of Beyond reviews and a new debate over whether this is actually a Christmas episode. Plus hear the hosts chat about the poetry of Bruce finding a companion in the place where he had experienced his greatest tragedy, a sneaky easter egg for a future episode of the series and an attempt to name Terry's disguise counterpart to Matches Malone. A highlight of my year, the Rhode Island Comic-Con is a place to meet some of the best area creatives—fantasy and sci-fi writers, comic creators, and cosplayers. Joining me was Ben Chou, my co-pilot for these events. Kicking things off is Stevie Oaks, whom I met at last year's RICC. He was just starting out, and has had one hell of a year! We talk about his TikTok channel and the amazing response he's had, working at other cons, and plans for the next year. After that, it's author M. Z. Medenciy for her recently-released book “Island Eight.” It's a cool story with a main character that takes a page from M.Z.'s life and an epic world we get to explore together. If you've been to any of the New England cons, you've likely had the pleasure of meeting Matches Malone, who's been cosplaying as the Dark Knight for 30 years. We talk about how he got into the role, and people he's met, and working with all sorts of area charities. To close out this episode, here's an interview I did with author Debra Zannelli. We talk about her five-part realistic vampire series, with themes of family and abuse, and the work that went into it.
Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
We're back with another Character Corner episode and this time we're talking about the character Moon Knight. Or should we say the characters Marc Spector/Steven Grant/Jake Lockley. Moon Knight is an interesting character to cover. First appearing in 1975 in Werewolf By Night, its pretty clear that early Moon Knight was Marvel's answer to DC's Batman. There's so many obvious comparisons. Early on in Moon Knight stories, Marc Spector wasn't suffering from mental illness. Rather his three personalities were actually cover aliases for him. Interestingly enough, all his aliases also seem to line up with aspects of Bruce Wayne. You have the Billionaire playboy Steven Grant. The highly skilled mercenary Marc Spector. Then there's the seedy Jake Lockley that is clearly based off of Matches Malone (who first appeared in 1972 in Batman comics). Then there's the Moon Knight concept itself. Dressed in all white (versus the all black of Batman), a hero of the night that looks at himself as the "spirit of vengeance" and taking out those criminals that prey on the weak. But then Marvel started to put some space between the characters by introducing Khonshu, the Moon God that took Marc Spector has his priest (or fist depending on how you look at it). Instead of some internal drive to make criminals fear him because of the murder of his parents, Spector is driven to fight crime because his God commands it. Or is it that he's just insane? Or both? Later comics definitely show that Khonshu is a very real (and petty and vengeful God). And it's Khonshu that has pretty much driven Marc insane. But it makes for a really interesting character and some very good comics to read (except for the Bendis run. Don't do that to yourselves). Joe Corallo and Eric Breen join Wes to talk about the introduction of classic Batman villain Ra's al Ghul. Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams introduce the villainous leader of the League of Shadows in Batman #232. It as almost a full year before Batman readers see Bruce Wayne and Ra's al Ghul face-off again in Batman #242. Ra's isn't the only memorable introduction, readers also meet Talia al Ghul and the infamous Lazarus Pits. There's also a fun running joke concerning longtime Batman character Matches Malone, who appears to die early in the story but keeps reappearing. Once again we braved the horrifying winter weather to cover Arisia, Boston's long-running (30 years!) science fiction and fantasy convention. We were there for you. (We were also there because we're huge geeks.) This year's report features: A weird new hotel! Why Kornflake couldn't be there! Kevin's panels (about comic books, 1980s nostalgia, Pulp Fiction, GLOW, and the Star Wars Holiday Special)! Other panels (about Clerks, Sesame Street, Batman, and the Great Molasses Flood)! Performances we wanted to see, but missed, including Jim's Big Ego and Minusworld! Performances we actually saw, including Dr. Horrible and harpist Sara Henya! Cosplay figure drawing! How to play the theremin! Matches Malone! Robolar from Mars! And even more! 'Twas a lovely weekend, and we hope to return next year, assuming we've thawed by then. Also: Seth Green's birthday, the dangers of Powerpoint, the soft rock of Bread, the truth about Mr. Belvedere, and the Fantasy Island riots of 1983.

Did we just find out who was behind the Wayne Murders? Check our our Gotham S02E18 Pinewood Podcast where we discuss this along with our top five points about this episode from the return of completely sane Babs to Jim Gordon cracking skulls, a mission for Mr. Freeze and some hints at animal experimentation by Professor Strange. Synopsis of Gotham S02E18 Pinewood Podcast Directed by: John Stephens Written by: Robert Hull and Megan Mostyn-Brown As Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) and Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) renew their investigation into the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne they come across a reference to Pinewood Farm on Wayne's now fixed computer. Their enquiries lead them to a remote cabin where they find a genetically altered, former inmate of Blackgate Prison called Karen Jennings (Julia Taylor Ross) who was experimented on at Wayne Enterprises by a scientist known only as the Philosopher. At the same time Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), with a little assistance from Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) who is attempting to make amends with Jim, discovers that the person who contracted Matches Malone was also the Philosopher. Jennings offers to identify the mystery man just as Hugo Strange (BD Wong) sends a newly suited Victor Fries (Nathan Darrow) to kill her in order to cover up his illegal experiments. Meanwhile Lucius Fox makes a shocking revelation that the Philosopher is one of Thomas Wayne's former friend's from project chimera. Jim instantly identifies him as Hugo Strange. However unnatural tests are coming to fruition under Indian Hill, as Hugo Strange's resurrection project finally begins to work and an unexpected someone rises from the dead affirming the name Azreal, Azreal, Azreal.
