I finally have the opportunity to feature one of the coolest small businesses in the Lake Norman area - in fact, one of the coolest small businesses anywhere! Davidson Provision Company is located in the heart of downtown Davidson right on Main Street. Owner Matt Santos founded Davidson Provision Company after leaving a successful career in technology and investment banking. The self-proclaimed “corporate refugee” (I love that term, by the way - my new favorite) had a deep-seated desire to live AND work in the town that he and his family loves. In this conversation, Matt and I talk a lot about his definition of success and how it has evolved in his life. He'll tell the story of how a question posed to him at an off-site seminar during his corporate years and his subsequent answer started him on the journey of entrepreneurship. He shares how the concept of Davidson Provision Company was inspired by something a friend told him at a cocktail party (love that story), and how it was the Davidson Community that has ultimately curated the inventory for his amazing shop on Main Street. Matt gets honest and candid about his mindset around the time of leaving a successful, safe, and lucrative corporate career. Perhaps what I love most about this conversation is Matt's curiosity about how to best guide this beautiful small business, and willingness to fully admit that he has not figured it all out - yet. As an entrepreneur that struggles most days to figure out where to guide his own business ventures, I personally related to so much of what he had to share. I've gone on long enough. Friends, this is a very inspirational and rewarding episode 68 of The Best of LKN podcast. Welcome boys and girls to a fun and long Reel Film Nerds podcast!  Mr. Mike Talent is not here today. He is out of country fulfilling his obligation for MI6.  Luckily Matt is good at blackmailing people and was able to find a guest host for today, Mr. Mile High Show himself Matt Santos!  The film they attempt to review today is Hondros a documentary on war photographer Chris Hondros. Topics include obviously lots and lots and lots of talk about photojournalism, downing Nyquil, and the Oakland A’s. Both the Matt’s agree Hondros is an incredible doc on an amazing photographer that you can go watch right now on Netflix.  Mr. Mile High Show is not a big fan of movies especially documentaries on photographers but he loved this one. He especially enjoyed the interviews of Chris’s mother about her son growing up with a camera in his hands.  RFN Matt really enjoyed the film as well. He especially liked how the documentary was not just about Chris’ life but 3 of his most impactful images and the stories behind them. Matt Santos gives Hondros an amazing rating of 4 out of 5 Reels.  RFN Matt goes a little bit above and beyond with 4.5 out of 5 Reels. He really loved this movie not just because it is about photography but it is a really great documentary in it’s own right. Mike Talent will continue to be out of the country for our next pod this Thursday so Matt again is calling in a favor, a huge favor for our very special 100th Episode!  Who you may ask is joining him well you will have to tune in on Thursday to find out. After receiving an unexpected call from the Australian consulate, Matt Santos becomes aware of a painting that he believes was looted from his family in Hungary during the Second World War. To recover the painting, he must repair his strained relationship with his harshly judgmental father, uncover his family history, and restore his connection to his own Judaism. Along the way to illuminating the mysteries of his past, Matt is torn between his doting girlfriend, Tracy, and his alluring attorney, Rachel, with whom he travels to Budapest to unearth the truth about the painting and, in turn, his family. As his journey progresses, Matt’s revelations are accompanied by equally consuming and imaginative meditations on the painting and the painter at the center of his personal drama, Budapest Street Scene by Ervin Kálmán. By the time Memento Park reaches its conclusion, Matt’s narrative is as much about family history and father-son dynamics as it is about the nature of art itself, and the infinite ways we come to understand ourselves through it. Of all the questions asked by Mark Sarvas’s Memento Park—about family and identity, about art and history—a central, unanswerable predicament lingers: How do we move forward when the past looms unreasonably large? Joining Sarvas in conversation with Janet Fitch, author of  the novels White Oleander, an Oprah Book Club selection, Paint It Black, and most recently The Revolution of Marina M.

WARNING our podcasts are SPOILER RIDDEN!!  Welcome to a super special bonus episode of the Reel Film Nerds!  Matt was invited by his good buddy Mr. Mile High Show, Matt Santos to a special screening of the independent film Little Pink House at the Prescott Valley Harkins 14.  Mike was not able to make the screening for obvious reasons.  This is the first solo cast for Matt so go easy on him.  Little Pink House is an incredible film that you really should see. If you want more information on the film, please visit the Little Pink House Facebook page.  No Marvel Cinematic Universe on this one folks, sorry.  It is Mike’s segment and Matt might make him figure out it out next week when we review Avengers: Infinity War!  This is a quick podcast at 15 minutes so give it a listen you will enjoy it.  Matt loved Little Pink House and gave it 4 out of 5 Reels.  The acting was amazing, the sets were spot on, and the story is incredible!!  The cinematography was lacking in his eyes and he wanted more backstory on some of the characters in the film.  Moral of this review is to go out and see this movie now! Episode 9 is a bit of a format change for us.  Mike is away working and attending a wedding, so Matt brought in our first guest and host of sister podcast The Mile High Show, Matt Santos.  Coincidentally it is also the first in our Legacy series of podcasts.  What’s Legacy you say well I will tell you.  Legacy is any film not currently in the box office at the time of the that episodes recording.  Typically, it will be at least a few years old but not always.  What was our pick for the first Legacy cast a nice gem of a classic Pee-wee's Big Adventure! Did we really talk almost an hour about Pee-Wee, no.  When the two Matt’s get together things typically get off topic very quickly.  Topics included baseball, photography, drive-in’s, Matt S’s Mom, and Citizen Kane.  This was a fun one to record but might not be a fun one to listen to.  If you skip it, we would understand. Matt S. gave Pee-wee's Big Adventure a 3.5 out of 5 Reels and your lone host and Matt gave it a 4 out of 5 Reels because he is super nostalgic.  Remember our podcasts are SPOILER RIDDEN!!         If you have a film you would like to hear Matt and Mike review please Facebook message us, Instagram message us, or email us at nerds@reelfilmnerds.com  Our little show can be found anywhere Podcasts reside such as iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Player FM, etc. While you are there like, subscribe, rate, and review us if you can too! It's Thanksgiving week and what better topic is there than giving thanks to the person who blazed the podcasting trail for the East Bay Citizen Show.  Hayward born and raised Matt Santos drops in from Prescott, Ariz. to chat about his podcast and we walk down memory lane to reminisce about...Wait a minute. Santos is really on the show to talking about me! About the time I ran for the Chabot College student president while serving as the newspaper's Editor-in-Chief, my rousing campaign speech, the college's fry cook/bookie and his advice for taking the Cowboys even though back-up QB Gary Hogeboom was subbing for the great Danny White, or was it Randy White? Also, in the news, what's might happen to Oakland Councilmember Desley Brooks after an allegation was reported last week that she assaulted former Black Panther icon Elaine Brown at a restaurant in Oakland? Probably nothing, but the allegation brings to light Brooks' notorious behavior over the past 14 years in office.

Magic Words to Penetrate the Filter, Erase Suspicion and Lower the Guard  It was exactly 10 years ago. I was on the telephone with an 87 year-old man I had been hunting for several weeks. I needed this man's permission to publish a private letter he had written to America's Chief of Naval Operations back in 1963. The man's name was William Lederer. “Where you calling from young man?” “Austin, Texas.” “I was there recently. Nice town.” “What brought you to Austin sir?” “I was there to bury my best friend Jim.” “I'm sorry to hear that.” “You would have liked Jim. Everyone did. He once gave me some advice that changed my life.” “What was it?” “William,” he said, “the public is more willing to believe fiction than non-fiction.” Mr. Lederer now had my full attention. Our bodies contain approximately 100 million sensory receptors that allow us to see, hear, taste, touch and smell physical reality. But the brain contains 10 thousand billion synapses. This means we're roughly 100,000 times better equipped to experience a world that does not exist, than a world that does. The first step in persuasion is to entice your target to imagine doing the thing you want them to do. Four and a half years ago in the summer of 2004, a screenwriter named Eli Attie began creating a persona for a new fictional character that would appear on The West Wing. Matt Santos (played by Jimmy Smits) would be a young congressman, new to Washington, a working-class member of an ethnic minority. Prior to running for public office, our fictional character Santos had been a community organizer in a major city (Houston.) Screenwriter Eli Attie admitted to The Guardian, a British newspaper, that he was inspired in 2004 by a young Illinois politician – not yet even a US senator – by the name of Barack Obama, a community organizer from Chicago. As a result of Attie's attraction to Obama, the 2006 television season showed us a glittering, fictional candidate for the presidency, a happily married, young minority male with 2 children who would run against a moderate Republican opponent from a western state. The imaginary Republican senator, Arnie Vinick (played by Alan Alda,) was unpopular with his conservative base due to his moderate views. His principal opponent in the fictional Republican primary was the Rev. Don Butler, a Christian preacher. Keep in mind these West Wing episodes aired 18 months before the nomination battle between John McCain and Mike Huckabee. But wait, it gets weirder. Ten years ago, Aaron Sorkin admitted that he based The West Wing's Josh Lyman on Rahm Emanuel, who served in Bill Clinton's White House. Both Lyman and Emanuel are Jewish. Both are brilliant. Both mail dead fish to opponents who make them angry. In the 2006 season of The West Wing, seasoned White House staffer Josh Lyman serves as campaign manager for the long-shot, minority candidate. When his candidate wins, Lyman is named Chief of Staff. Two years later Rahm Emanuel, the real Josh Lyman, will become Barack Obama's Chief of Staff. Was it all a plot? Don't be ridiculous.  It's just an example of how we tend to act out the things we've seen in our mind.  By the way, here's the end of the Lederer story: “How did Jim's advice change your life Mr. Lederer?” “Well, I had written a few books but none of them sold very well. So in 1958 I showed Jim the manuscript for my newest book and he told me to go back and fictionalize the name of the country, the characters, everything. ‘The public is more willing to believe fiction than non-fiction.'” “How did it turn out for you?” “Well, that book, The Ugly American, stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 78 straight weeks and sold more than 3 million copies in its first year. Marlon Brando starred in the movie. But of course that's nothing compared to what Jim did.” “What do you mean?” “Jim wrote...
