Join us for some group therapy! Naomi and Alex welcome back 38Degrees CEO and former Obama campaign staffer Matthew McGregor with some first impressions of Trump's low-energy inauguration speech, his high-energy overflow speech, Melania's get-away-from-me-energy hat and Musk's chemically-enhanced-energy salute. ***SPONSOR US AT KO-FI.COM/QUIETRIOTPOD*** "So much of it was about him. So much of it was about how he's the best and how he's suffered and how he's the victim. Contrast that with 'ask not what your country can do for you'. It was an extraordinarily self-centered inauguration speech." "Once he was in the other room, he gave the speech he really wanted to. He wanted to talk about January the 6th. He wanted to open up old wounds. He will never ever let go of the injustice that he perceives happened to him back in 2020.” "We should be outraged. We should stay angry. And we should be up for resisting what Donald Trump is going to try to do to America. But there's no point in pretending that he is a novice, an idiot, someone who is deranged. He knows what he's doing." “John McCain said it's always darkest just before it goes completely black. I'm glad to be, experiencing the pain, with you both, in a group therapy setting.” CALLS TO ACTION To find out more about (and donate if in the US) to Planned Parenthood click here. My Future Business Show Interview With Matthew McGregor #mobileapps #22APPS #matthewmcgregor Hi, and welcome to the show! On today's My Future Business Show I have the pleasure of spending time with founder, CEO and brainchild of his mobile app business ‘22APPS' Mr. Matthew McGregor. After spending 5 years in the internet marketing space, Matthew came up with the idea for 22APPS on a ski trip, thinking to himself “Why do people still use websites instead of apps?” During the call, Matthew explains that although there's a long list of drag and drop website builders around today, there were almost no drag and drop mobile app builders…at least until now. Now, as a point of perspective, not only has Matthew contributed funding to help grow 22APPS, he's also successfully partnered with the amazing Mike Filsaime who was so impressed with what he saw in Matthew and 22APPS, that he invested heavily into the business. This is an easy-to-use mobile app. platform that will not only transform how you communicate and connect with your clients, customers and patients across any industry you can think of, it will forever change how you monetize your business in ways you didn't think possible. To set up your own 22APPS mobile app, or contact Matthew directly to find out more, click the link below.

Maze Prison was seen by many as Europe’s most secure prison. It was a prison within a detention centre within an army camp, and believed to be completely impenetrable by any one prisoner. That was until September in 1983, when the IRA successfully pulled off the largest prison escape in British and Irish History. In this final episode of our Heroes of the Resistance series we review some of the most powerful parts of our previous interviews. Matthew McGregor discusses the story that most resonated with him, that of the Ulma family, who attempted to rescue a family of Jews, but were denounced. Anthony Silkoff of the Board of Deputies of British Jews reads his article on the Ringleblum archive, a collection of documents that was produced by the captives of the Warsaw ghetto.

Matthew McGregor spoke with Rosie Carter regarding her work in tracking the changing attitudes during the Corona virus outbreak. Far from what you would expect in this gloomy period, Rosie's polling found a rise in optimism, at at time of desperate economic outlooks. Amidst rolling news coverage of the disastrous pandemic, certain key indicators have actually improved. But what's behind the numbers? HOPE not hate's measure of these attitudes, and our analysis of their direction is something with which every antifascist should be concerned.

Two murders this year have sent shocking echoes of Northern Ireland past: that of Lyra Mckee, attributed to the “New IRA”, and the other of Ian Ogle attributed to the UVF. With Brexit approaching the risk that Northern Ireland’s painful past could be back in the present is on the rise. Matthew McGregor talks with Matthew Collins about his recent interview with East Belfast figures close to the leadership of the UVF in East Belfast. These figures are in a position to give a real insight into the group’s motivations and plans. The two Matthews discuss how Brexit is uniquely placed to drive a wedge between communities.
It seems like Boris Johnson can’t go anywhere without a barrage of heckles or angry confrontations. As the parties get into election mode, is what the Conservatives felt was their most-loved asset a problem with the electorate? Hope Not Hate campaigns director and former Labour adviser Matthew McGregor and Ryan Shorthouse, chief executive of moderate Tory Think-thank Bright Blue join Arj and Paul to discuss elections, conference season and whether the Lib Dem surge is tangible. The fallout from 2016's historic vote to leave the EU has changed the UK’s political landscape. Over the last 8 years, HOPE not hate’s Fear and Hope reports have sought to understand Britain’s different ‘tribes’, groups of people with similar worldviews, and what drives those groups. Brexit’s turmoil has sparked a huge change in those groups, driven to a great extent by political distrust, which itself is also driving new spikes in intolerance. Rosie Carter's long-term research into the views of the nation reflects this by updating our 7 ‘tribes’ to better reflect the landscape of the UK. Matthew McGregor talks with Rosie about her findings and asks if there are ways to find Hope amidst the fear and the loss faced by so many today.
In a new essay commissioned by the Government's Commission for Countering Extremism, HOPE not hate's senior research Dr. Joe Mulhall argued that there is a new threat from the far right - the fact that they have modernised and moved into the mainstream. His essay is a must-read for antifascists who want to understand the changing nature of the threat posed by the far right. In this episode, Joe and Matthew McGregor chatted about some of the key themes in the piece.
Joe Mulhall and Matthew McGregor discuss new polling HOPE not hate commissioned from YouGov into Conservative party members attitudes towards Muslims. The results were shocking, but perhaps not surprising in that they reflect an older, overwhelmingly white, and middle class base in a society where Islamophobia is widespread. Gordon Brown makes a cameo appearance from an interview we recorded just after his recent speech on the rise of the far right.

Twenty years on, HOPE not hate Chief Executive Nick Lowles reflects on the co-ordinated nail bombings by neo-Nazi David Copeland, the similarities between people caught up in extremism then and today, and the police failure to take far-right terrorism seriously.
HOPE not hate's Matthew McGregor talked to Mike Katz, the newly elected chair of the Jewish Labour Movement. Mike talked about the Jewish community's "absolute horror" about antisemitism in the Labour party, the personal impact it has taken on Jewish members of the party, and what he - and the JLM - want to see happen to tackle it.Because Mike talked candidly about the nature of the antisemitic abuse Jewish Labour members have received, quoting from abusive messages they have been sent, this episode contains offensive words and phrases.

The one and only Owen Jones talks with Podcast regular Matthew McGregor about his work going into at-risk schools and teaching critical thinking skills as a shield against extremist ideas. We want to extend Owen's work far beyond its current reach in the new year, this Christmas think about sharing the pod, and donating to our fund to help build HOPE in schools.https://donate.hopenothate.org.uk/page/contribute/christmas-2018
We interrupt regular podcasting to discuss the hilarious and tragic leaks that HOPE not hate received over the weekend. Emails, messages and other evidence that Milo Yiannopoulos is outspending his earning powers and teetering on the brink of an embarrassing bankruptcy. Milo owes $20,000 to employees, and well over a million dollars to his own company, and has been forced to return his own Cartier wedding ring to settle a debt at the Jewelers. While it is a good time of year to revel in some heartwarming schadenfreude, the scale of Milo's earnings gives cause for concern, even if hubris has proved his personal undoing. Matthew McGregor and Joe Mulhall discuss the massive earnings and the ongoing fall of Milo, a far-right celebrity that is dangerously in debt.
We caught up with Lisa Nandy MP for an interview in parliament ahead of a launch event for our new research - The Fear, Hope and Loss report. This groundbreaking research tracks the changing attitudes to migration in the post-Brexit landscape, insights that are crucial for anyone who wishes to mend fractured communities and build bridges between constituents.Lisa draws on her own experience as MP for Wigan to contribute to a lively interview covering a range of relevant topics with our very own Matthew McGregor.
Stephen Yaxley Lennon, is not the messiah, he’s a convicted criminal, far-right activist, and Islamophobic extremist. This long read (by the Right Response team, and read by Matthew McGregor) explains exactly why he’s earned those labels. [this podcast was recorded earlier this year, prior to Stephen Lennon’s arrest and appeal]
We join Joe, Safya, and Matthew for a chat about the party conferences that they have all looked at in recent days, and the warm, white wine and white supremacy that greeted many of their attendees. Katie Hopkins recently addressed the For Britain conference alongside Ingrid Carlqvist, a known Holocaust denier. Safya assesses Katie's slow sink into the murky depths of the far right. Joe talks about UKIP becoming a home for the far right, including a crowd of extremist gamers with bizzaro names such as 'Sargon of Akkad' and 'Count Dankula', following the resignation of their MEP Lord Dartmouth over homophobia and Islamophobia. Finally, Matthew talks about the Labour party conference, the fantastic meeting held by HOPE not hate’s Rosie Carter there, and HOPE not hate's new campaign - 'We Want the Final Say' which seeks a referendum on the final deal for the Brexit negotiations. The three discuss all this plus Tommy Robinson and more, in a great roundtable chat.
Rosie Carter, HOPE not hate's Policy Officer, discusses the surprising outcomes of her major research into attitudes to immigration. The National Conversation on Immigration is the largest ever public engagement on immigration. Rosie interviewed 20,000 people in the last 18 months and her findings (in conjunction with Jill Rutter at British Future) mapped attitudes to migration and drilled down into the complex feelings that different people have across the UK. Have a listen, and read the full report at: http://nationalconversation.uk/
