It's a simple truth: 'business as usual' simply doesn't apply anymore... and not just because of the pandemic. In today's episode of The Greatness Machine, Darius chats with Jay Wilkinson, entrepreneur, author, speaker, angel investor, CEO of Firespring, and self-proclaimed "geek with social skills" about the rapidly shifting world of business. Hailing from Nebraska, the "middle of everywhere," Jay realized at a young age that he simply wasn't suited to taking instructions from others and became an entrepreneur, starting eight businesses by the time he left college - most of which failed. Undaunted, he took the lessons from those failures and, in 1986, helped launch Campus Connection magazine in NYC which caught on, eventually expanding to 350 college campuses.  You'll discover how Jay realized he was 100% unemployable, and how that set him on the path to becoming an entrepreneur. You'll learn about B Corps - what they are and how they're changing the way business is done by focusing on making a positive impact in the community and even the world. You'll discover why businesses need to expand their worldview and focus on a "stakeholder capitalism" mentality if they're going to survive the next decade.  You'll also learn about the Do More Good Movement (of which Jay is the founder) and its mission to educate, empower and amplify companies and business leaders doing more good. Join Darius and Jay for a fascinating conversation about making a positive impact through business and why Jay believes that, in its highest form, capitalism can be a force for good. Topics include: Jay's path to becoming an entrepreneur growing up in Nebraska and why he felt he was "100% unemployable” The definition of a B Corp, as well as the strict standards that must be met to become certified Why Jay believes that businesses must develop a 'stakeholder capitalism' mentality in order to survive the next decade and beyond The origins of the Do More Good Movement and its goal to inspire purpose-based businesses and reclaim capitalism And other topics… Connect with Jay: Website: https://jaywilkinson.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaywilkinson Connect with Darius: Website: https://therealdarius.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dariusmirshahzadeh/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whoompdarius/ YouTube: https://therealdarius.com/youtube Book: The Core Value Equation https://www.amazon.com/Core-Value-Equation-Framework-Limitless/dp/1544506708 Learn more about your ad choices. We are all about getting results... and getting results fast. That would be an unhealthy way to do it. It's a good idea to lose weight and look after your well-being, but if the process makes you unhappy and you're doing something just to lose weight, you would lose appeal to what you are doing. And most likely, relationships and social interactions suffer. That would never get you far down in your journey to reach your goals. Because the stress of sticking to what you think is the only thing that will make it a success for you could be your downfall.  Diet mentality is made of this stuff, making you look perfect when it should never be like that.  What the body wants is gentleness and compassion. And it's about giving yourself permission and an empowered choice to eat what feels good for you at the moment.  That way, you feel good about yourself and how you relate with people you care about the most. And that's what matters. Jay Williams is a Co-Owner, Founder at Hale Fitness. Back when he found CrossFit in 2007, Jay was 315 lbs and couldn't do a push-up or a pull-up. Even though he used to be a decent athlete and enjoyed going to the gym, he got fat and sick after sitting behind a desk for so many years…he had to do something, or he was headed to an early death…. In this episode, Jay shares his journey from a 300+ pound guy to someone a hundred pound lighter. He shares tips and strategies on how you can teach yourself to stretch your timeline of reaching the goal but still do what's necessary. He also shares what intuitive eating looks like for him. And how it's never about rigidity and sticking to perfection but feeling good about yourself and your body and making yourself present with the people that matter to you the most. "The number one key to me being successful is just, or any success I've had is just little wins that I can celebrate every day. And the less focus I have on the goal and the more focus I have on the process, the happier I am and the more success that I find." - Jay Williams   What you will learn from this episode: 07:01 - Looking back at his childhood years and the turn of events in his school life, and the injury that contributed to his weight gain 10:29 - Initially making progress at first but fell off the tracks again 12:57 - A big support system makes a huge difference 15:52 - How he met his wife and what unconditional support she's getting from her since they began dating till they get married 18:25 - The realization of doing something better for his health 21:04 - What keeps him continue doing what he is doing for his health now 24:29 - Three reasons why people want to lose weight [depending on their truth] 29:31 - Doing what makes you happy 33:48 - Eating the way you've set yourself to eat but with permission to eat anything you want in that moment 34:54 - Giving a glimpse of his intuitive eating 38:46 - How feeling bad about yourself never helps and sharing a strategy to help you get successful 42:01 - The idea of tracking and how you can win 46:58 - How to turn your focus out of those 'downs' in life   Connect with Jay: Website: https://halefitness.com    Connect With Leslie Thornton: weightlossalbany.com E: Leslie@LeslieMThornton.com Facebook Twitter LinkedIn

It is not surprising, during an entire lifetime, most people will experience some form of trauma. In the developmental years, trauma can affect the development of the brain and in adulthood it can rewire processing. When trauma is left untreated, it can have a significant impact on us at unexpected times in our lives. Left untreated, trauma can compound and form into complex trauma. Veterans are at a significantly higher risk for complex trauma.  In this episode Part 2, Donna and Jay continue their discussion with Dr. Connie Siciliano Avila (aka Dr. Connie) to talk about trauma, levels of trauma, trauma responses, treatment for trauma and how family and friends can support their loved ones dealing with trauma.  Bio Dr. Connie is a Texas Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor: She has experience in clinical and nonclinical settings, such as a psychiatric hospitals, independent practice, and health & wellness center. In this episode, I host a race recap with Team Odlaw, Outlaws from the RAGNAR Bourbon Chase Road Relay from Clermont to Lexington, KY October 15-16, 2021.  The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a collection of bourbon whiskey distilleries located in Kentucky. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail features 37 distilleries and  began in 1999 as a way to bring tourism to Kentucky.    The RAGNAR relay is a running event in which teams of 12 crazy people run roughly 200 miles—from point A to point B—on city streets, country roads, sidewalks, and bike paths. Teams run day, and night, and day again, sleeping (ha ha) in vans, grassy fields, or perhaps a high school gym.    Each teammate runs three separate legs of the race, with downtime in between, for a total of 11 to 24 miles per runner (twice that for ultra teams).    We recap our experience, conduct and After Action Review, and what lessons learned from an event like this can be applied to your daily life.    Questions I asked:  Why do you do these types of events?    What was the most difficult moment for you?    What lesson learned from this could you apply to your day to day life?    What equipment did you wish you would have brought?   If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Are you happy with your life? Let's reflect.  This is a series of questions to help you determine what parts of your life are happy and what may need some focus.      What makes you happy?   Be honest.    Think about all areas of your life.    What makes you happy at work?  What makes you happy at home?  What makes you happy with friends and family?  What makes you happy when you are by yourself?    What do you love to do?    What would you do with your life today if you were not afraid of failure?    What is not working in your life?  What are you currently doing that prevents you from experiencing joy?  What is working in your life?  Who is not working in your life?  Often there are people in our lives who don't add value.    In fact, they subtract from our life's joy.  Be honest.    Who right now in your life is subtracting value from your life and adding misery to it?    Can you fix any of these relationships or should you let them go out of your life?    What relationships are working in your life?    Just as there are people who don't work in our lives, there are people in our lives who do.  They bring value and joy to you.    The clearer you are about why these people bring joy into your life, the easier it will be to appreciate and enjoy your relationships with them—and attract more people like them into your life.    If we were getting together one year from today, what would have to happen for you to be able to tell me that you now have more joy in your life?    What is the single most important thing you've learned about yourself as a result of answering these questions?   If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/ITunes? Your feedback is important to me and it would also take less than 60 seconds and make a difference in getting those hard to get guests as we expand our reach.   Connect with Jay: Website:www.jaytiegs.com Facebook:www.facebook.com/sjtiegs LinkedIn:www.linkedin.com/in/jay-tiegs YouTube:www.youtube.com/user/jaytiegs Instagram:www.instagram.com/jaytiegs

In this episode I take you with me on the 2021 March to the Arch event in St. Louis which took place on Saturday, 09/11/2021.     The March to the Arch is a 21-mile memorial walk, founded by Bo Drochelman, that has become an annual tradition since 2002.   The march begins in West St. Louis County and concludes at the base of the Gateway Arch. The walk begins at 9:11 a.m. on every September 11th.   I interview participants on where they were on 9/11, how their life has been affected, and why they participated in this event.    During the march we visited the Flags of Valor display.  Flags of Valor is a weeklong event held at Art Hill in Forest Park to honor the victims of 9/11, the first responders, and service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe fighting the War on Terror since 9/11.    The March to the Arch: http://www.marchtothearch.com/ Flags of Valor: https://flagsofvalorstl.com/ The podcast references a book by Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas. The name of the book is: “You Can Do It!” and is the vision of Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, a heroine of United Flight 93 and a woman who was an inspiration to all who knew her. Lauren's dream was to create the ultimate self-empowering resource, a book to help women of all ages realize their dreams. How To Regain Your Motivation

In this episode, I describe why we lose our motivation when pursuing our goals.   Have you ever known deep down that you should be eating better, maybe you should be exercising more?    Have you ever thought that maybe you should be spending more time with your kids?  You know you should be spending mohard-to-geth your partner...  but you don't?      Your actions don't match what you are doing?    Maybe you feel that your career has flatlined, you are in a plateau?  You worked hard and then flatline...  You find you haven't driven anymore.      Why does this happen?     Why do we lose motivation to do things?   Most people wait until it's too late to find out what is NECESSARY.  Their partner leaves them, so now they want to shape up.   People go to the doctor and get a health scare so NOW they want to exercise.    People wait until the very last moment because it's much easier to be COMFORTABLE than to TRY.     We got into a comfort zone and we started thinking about our ambitions from this place of comfort and lose connection with our why and the reason is NECESSARY.  The world's highest performers connect necessity with their pursuits and you can too.    If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes?
