Nevernight Chronicles by Jay Kristoff, Early Departures by Justin A Reynolds, Scout is Not a Band Kid by Jade Armstrong, Epic Story of Every Living Thing by Deb Caletti
A Touch of Darkness is a retelling of the Greek story of Hades, the God of the Dead, and Persephone, the Goddess of Spring. Persephone had been hidden from the world by her mother, Demeter, but eventually convinced her to let her live a more mortal life in New Athens, where she's attending college. Her best friend Lexa convinces her to go to a local club, Nevernight, to celebrate getting an internship at New Athens News. Nevernight is a luxury night club owned by Hades, who uses the club to make bargains with mortals who willingly enter into these games. Persephone plays a few rounds of poker with Hades (but she doesn't know it's him until the game is over) and loses, so she must fulfill a bargain with him or spend eternity in the Underworld. She has six months to create life in the Underworld. In the process, they come to understand one another and fall in love. But not without some obstacles to their love…namely Demeter, Aphrodite, and Hades' personal assistant, Minthe. Were we familiar with the characters of Persephone and Hades and their stories before reading this? What popular romance tropes did we recognize in the story? How did this novel overthrow the misogynistic and patriarchal undertones of Greek mythology? Join us as we discuss these questions and more in episode 24 of our spoiler-filled podcast.Questions: The questions discussed in this episode were pulled from previous romance episodes we've done and from our discussion on Circe.Great music huh?! This week your hosts discuss Jay Kristoff's best seller Nevernight! After her father is executed as a traitor and her mother and brother are taken away Mia vows revenge. To do so she must train to be a Blade at the Red Church. She will be tested in unimaginable ways but if she succeeds she will have the knowledge and resources to avenge her family. Her competition is ruthless and trusting anyone is dangerous, especially because she has a rare power. In the Quiet Mountain no one is what they seem. Can she survive the other acolytates and achieve her dream or will she fail like many have before her?
Listen to my host dreams come true as I have an amazing chat with New York Times Best Selling author Jay Kristoff!! The incredible author of the Nevernight chronicles, the Aurora Rising series and upcoming Empire of the Vampire among other series, talks about all things writing, reading and the fun stuff in between. We discuss the smut in his work (22:28) and how hot fellow author Pierce Brown is (23:35). We touch on his unorthodox writing styles (43:30), those infamous footnotes (44:08) and his advice for trying new ideas of your own (45:48). Jay explains more about his extensive world building (48:45) and the intricacies of his new main character, Gabriel (36:02) and the questions of faith and religion that appear in the book (39:54). Whatever time you listen to the ep, grab a cup of something and sit back for just over an hour of fun and laughter with some gems thrown in for my indie authors who may be in need of some writerly advice (53:08). Welcome to Jon’s Author Diary for the week ending September 1, 2019…yes, September. I’ve had a productive week. If you’ve been receiving my newsletters for a while, you now that I've been telling myself not to start new projects until I clear the backlog of ongoing projects. Well, I failed that this week. I’ve been working on a new prequel for The Ravenglass Chronicles. It’s set about nine months before the events of The Magician, and gives some more insight into Kat’s life and how she first met Hans. I have a first draft complete and will be working on a second draft over the next week or so. Those of you who on my Patreon page will get a first look at this as I post the unedited chapters as soon as the second draft is ready. The rest of you will have to wait! But, fear not, it’s going to be a freebie to say thank you for supporting my work. The prequel will be called… *drumroll* The Fool. “Wait! Didn’t you already release The Fool?” Yes. The story I originally released under the title The Fool is now combined with The Magician. Amazon would not let me have a book 0 (The Fool is card 0 in the tarot) linked to a series. This meant readers missing out on the first episode of the series. So, The Fool as a title was unpublished and there will be a new version. I’m not going to make this available on Amazon, only to my newsletter subscribers. So, look out for the new version of The Fool coming at some point in the near future. Black Death update I have now compiled the Black Death series into three novels. It is now with my co-author, Lynn, so it's out of my hands for a while. I hope that it will get done in the not-too-distant future. TOOL has a new album! I was excited this week to see that one of my favourite bands TOOL released a new album for the first time in 13 years. And it did not disappoint. It is a great album. This will probably sound pretentious, but TOOL’s doesn’t write ‘songs’—they are more like musical experiences, hypnotic stories that take you on strange journeys. The Wasteland series re-write I continue to post chapters from the new, improved version of Wizard of the Wasteland every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on my Patreon page. I’m about twenty percent through reworking Knight of the Wasteland—I forgot just how much I loved writing this story. As soon as I’m done posting chapters from Wizard, I’ll go straight onto this. And, of course, I’m posting these in addition to short stories, podcasts, and exclusive articles. You can access all of these for as little as $1 per month. Please visit: patreon.com/joncronshawauthor. Assassin novels I’m currently on a bit of grimdark fantasy assassin kick. I’ve recently read Andy Peloquin’s Darkblade Assassin and have moved onto Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. Do you have a favourite assassin novel or series you think I should read?

Ep 135: Grimalkin, Mogget and Mr Kindly - Cats in Speculative Fiction There is possibly no animal so ubiquitous both in fiction and in real life as the domestic cat. (The term domestic is used with a large pinch of salt!) Popular pets, affectionate companions, independent hunters and cunning predators, the common moggy has traded little of its wildness in exchange for a comfortable home and regular meals - and it still carries an aura of mystery. This week the dragons look at the cat in myth and legend, in their personal experiences and in how the creature slinks into fiction. On the slab this week: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff, Abhorsen by Garth Nix and Gobbolino, the Witch's Cat by Ursula Williams, and many more. Join us for a purr-fect episode. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic
