Marina DelVecchio, PhD, launched her memoir, Unsexed: Memoirs of a Prostitute's Daughter after ten years of being unsexed in her marriage and getting divorced, because of trauma and mixed messages she received about sex for women. In this episode, Marina talks about writing her book to understand why she was so touch-averse, patriarchal effects on sexuality, and how trauma trickles into how we parent our children. "I clear tables when I talk about women's issues," Marina says, of her frankness on such subjects. Unsexed examines the role that sex plays in the life of one woman with two mothers who introduce her to polarized frameworks of female sexuality. Born in Greece to a violent prostitute and then adopted at age 8 by a cold and unloving virgin from New York, Marina inherits a sexual identity steeped in fear and shame—one that, as she grows older and becomes a wife and mother, trickles into her marriage and the parenting of her children. Without the tools needed to understand her complex mothers or to unpack the lessons they taught her, Marina relies on self-erasure to survive relationships that silence and define her—until she finally becomes fed up with those old patterns and begins to stand in her own power. A memoir that unearths the layered emotional and sexual lives of women and exemplifies the satisfaction that comes when they assert their voices and power, Unsexed speaks to millions of women who have different narratives but face similar struggles in reclaiming their voices, bodies and sexuality. Marina is a former high school English teacher with 20 years' teaching experience in literature, creative and academic writing and research. She has acquired an MS in English and Secondary Education from Queens College in New York, thirty credits towards her Doctorate at St. John's University in New York, specializing in Gender Studies, 19th and 20th Century American Literature, and Feminist Criticism, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the Queens University in Charlotte. She has also completed a Certificate in Women's Studies from the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth and teaches writing, women's studies, and literature as a full-time Professor at a community college in North Carolina. She has received several awards for her writing from The Writer's Digest Annual Writing Competition (2011-2015), and her work has been published by The Huffington Post, The New Agenda, WE Magazine for Women and BlogHer. She has worked as a contributing book reviewer of women's literature for Her Circle Ezine and as Assistant Editor of Poetry and Non-Fiction for QU Literary Magazine (2014-15). In print, her work has been published by Cengage Learning's anthology on Media and Violence Against Women (2013) and She Writes' collection of essays titled Three Minus One (2014). She was a finalist in the 2015 Tiferet Writing Contest, and her craft essay on writing immersion memoirs was published by The Tishman Review in June 2016. Her other book publications include Dear Jane (2019), The Professor's Wife (2021) and The Virgin Chronicles (2022). Currently represented by the Keller Media Literary Agency for a nonfiction project related to music and female sexuality, Marina has established a strong online presence via her writing on empowering girls and women through education, positive female role models and writing as an act of resistance. Marina teaches college students women's studies and literature through the lens of bibliotherapy, guiding her students to connect with literary heroes who write for power and self-assertion. She lives in North Carolina with her children and three feral cats.  Learn more about Marina and follow her: https://marinadelvecchio.com https://www.facebook.com/marinadelvecchio727 https://www.instagram.com/marina.delvecchio/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/maria-leonard-olsen/support

(Conversation recorded on April 24th, 2024)   Show Summary:  Engaging with the human predicament requires new ways of understanding the world - novel perspectives that are rooted in a more holistic and interdependent mindset than those dominant in the industrialized society of the past few centuries.  Today's conversation with philosopher and social scientist Jonathan Rowson dives into the emerging ways of being that could serve us as we move toward a post-growth world, including what he has found particularly helpful in his decades of work studying the metacrisis.  In a world of (often siloed) hyper-specific experts, how would valuing the role of the “expert generalist” both change the face of academia and help us understand the world from a more holistic systems perspective? How does metamodernism merge the best of modernism and postmodernism to create a more comprehensive and constructive view of reality? How do we find and embrace our calling in the context of the metacrisis in order to take purposeful action forward?  About Jonathan Rowson: Jonathan Rowson is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive of Perspectiva, a publishing house and praxis collective based primarily in London. Perspectiva describes itself as an urgent one-hundred-year project to improve the relationship between systems, souls, and society in theory and practice. Jonathan is a philosopher and social scientist by academic training and has degrees from Oxford, Harvard and Bristol Universities. He has written extensively on the idea of metacrisis as our multifaceted delusion, and he is increasingly focused on experiments in community and spiritual praxis to help shift socio-economic immunity to change. He is an Open Society Fellow and a Fellow at The Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity at the University of Surrey. In his prior role as Director of the Social Brain Centre at the Royal Society of Arts he authored influential research reports including A New Agenda on Climate Change, Money Talks, and Spiritualise. He is also a Chess Grandmaster and three-time British Champion (2004–6) and views the game as a continuing source of insight and inspiration. His book, The Moves that Matter – A Grandmaster on the Game of Life was published by Bloomsbury in 2019.   For Show Notes and More    Watch this video episode on Youtube

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday expressed deep concerns over the situation in Gaza, reiterating his call for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages.Speaking at a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York, the UN chief underscored the need for “real, visible, concrete steps” towards a two-State solution based on UN resolutions, international law and previous agreements.“Repeated bloody hostilities and decades of tensions and occupation have failed to provide a State for the Palestinians or security for Israelis,” he said.“In the Middle East and around the world, we need peace in every sense," he said. "Our world cannot afford to wait."Peace, the common threadRecalling his address to the General Assembly yesterday, where he presented his priorities for 2024, the UN chief highlighted raging conflicts, geopolitical divisions and escalating polarization within communities and stressed that peace is the “common thread” connecting the multifaceted challenges faced globally.“Yesterday, I presented a clear-eyed, sober assessment of the world. This is no time for pulling punches,” he said.Addressing the several “existential challenges” facing the world – from nuclear danger to the climate emergency and the risks posed by unchecked artificial intelligence – requires much more to be done across the board.“It will require a serious conversation between developed and developing countries, between rich and emerging economies, between north and south, east and west,” he stated.Reforms neededThe Secretary-General called for institutional reforms, starting with the overhaul of the Security Council and the Bretton Woods Institutions – the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).Acknowledging the shift from a unipolar to a multipolar world, he emphasized the need for renewed, inclusive mechanisms of multilateral governance to prevent multiplying risks.Looking ahead, Mr. Guterres highlighted the upcoming Summit of the Future in September, noting the importance of the New Agenda for Peace, the SDG Stimulus and the UN's Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence. He also emphasized the need of aligning institutions with the present times and preserving principles such as respect for the UN Charter, international law and international humanitarian law.Situation in GazaIn addressing immediate crises, Mr. Guterres expressed particular concern for ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and in Gaza, where “the situation just keeps getting worse” and UN humanitarian operations continue to face denials of access, delays and dangers – including live fire.“Let's be clear: Denial of humanitarian access means denial of humanitarian relief for civilians,” he stressed. The Secretary-General also expressed deep concerns over reports that the Israeli military intends to focus next on Rafah.“Half of Gaza's population is now crammed into Rafah. They have nowhere to go. They have no homes – and they have no hope,” he said, calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, unconditional release of hostages and concrete steps towards a two-State solution in line with UN resolutions and international law.Peace is indispensableMr. Guterres concluded by stressing that peace, in every sense, is indispensable for the Middle East and the world. He emphasized the urgency of action, asserting that the world cannot afford to wait for the necessary changes.

In a massive new policy proposal that he called ‘Agenda 47', President Trump laid out his plan to restore a little known presidential power which was quite literally lost about 50 years ago. Specifically, this is the executive power known as impoundment – something that President Nixon (while he was embroiled in the Watergate scandal) signed away. This was a power that was used as far back as the days of Thomas Jefferson, allowing the office of the President of the United States to limit the amount of money that is spent by the federal government. President Trump is saying that the signing away of that authority was unconstitutional. He would attempt to regain that authority for the executive office. And then, once it was regained, he would use it to fight the “deep state”, as well as to curb the federal bureaucracy. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy's annual letter to shareholders this week delivered a dual message: while the company might not be done streamlining its operations, it's also not scaling back its ambitions for future growth. Jassy outlined the company's strategy to expand further into generative artificial intelligence, healthcare, satellite broadband and other sectors, even as he hinted that the company might continue to cut costs in other areas. He also made it clear the company isn't backing down from its push to get employees back in the office for at least three days a week starting in May. GeekWire's Todd Bishop and John Cook share some of their key takeaways from Jassy's shareholder letter and talk about the future of the tech giant on this episode of the GeekWire Podcast. Interview with Award-Winning Journalist, Senior Editor-in Chief at the Jewish News Syndicate, Jonathan Tobin, to discuss his recent columns, including on the Biden Administration abandoning Israel on a crucial UN vote on the UNRWA support for the Palestinians, from a column titled: Biden's neutrality on infrastructure of the war against Israel A U.S. abstention on a resolution supporting the UNRWA refugee agency that fuels Palestinian demands for a “right of return” demonstrates the administration's misunderstanding of why the conflict continues. We also discussed the recent trip to Israel organized by the far left anti-Israel J Street - bringing Democrat members (only) of Congress to meet with Israeli leaders, while indoctrinating them even more in support of the Palestinian narrative. Congressional members on the trip included Barbara Lee CA-13, Mark Pocan WI-2, and Jamaal Bowman NY-16, all of whom have horrific records on Israel. Jonathan discussed the further lurch left by the ADL who has voiced support for Critical Race Theory, which would lead to further antisemitism from ideological progressives. Lastly, we talked about AIPAC, and whether they can still be relevant as a pro-Israel bipartisan group when bipartisanship is fading away in Washington.
