Korean car maker Kia had a remarkable year last year – climbing to No. 3 on thesales chart behind Mazda and market leader Toyota, overtaking sister companyHyundai in total sales for the first time. And of course, successfully sponsoringthe Australian Open Tennis, a platform to launch one of its latest models, thisyear, the high-performance electric Kia EV6. I've seen Kia grow over a long timeand for the most part it has an impressive model range. Late last year itintroduced a second-generation Niro, a rather funky roomy small front drive SUVwhich comes as a hybrid or pure electric. The hybrid Niro comes in two variants, the S and the better equipped GT-line which I drove – teaming a 1.6-litre 77kWpetrol engine with a 32kW electric motor and six-speed automatic– it's not a plug-in hybrid, thankfully, but a closed loop hybrid that harnesses electric energy onthe run when coasting or braking. It works a treat, a great drive experience and Imanaged just 4.5 L/100 with city driving. And it uses cheaper 91 RON petrol. Butthe cost is around $55,000 drive-away – certainly highly equipped yes, but a lot ofmoney for a small SUV. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Driving Kia's second-generation small Niro Hybrid SUV – I drove the better-equipped GT-line, a roomy, highly featured and somewhat funky small SUV,visually appealing, teaming a 1.6-litre 77kW petrol engine with a 32kW electricmotor and six-speed automatic. Importantly, this is not a plug-in hybrid but aclosed loop hybrid that harnesses its electric energy on the run, when coasting ofthrough regenerative braking. Much the same principle that Toyota use on theirCamry hybrid sedan and RAV 4 SUV. What is impressive, the small lithium-ionbattery weighs just 34kgs, a lot lighter to many plug-in hybrid batteries. Withmainly city driving I managed economy of just 4.5L/100. But the Kia Niro HybridGT-line will set you back around $55,000 drive-away, a lot of money for a smallfront-wheel drive SUV. Having said that its very highly equipped, the driveexperience in a somewhat roomy cabin front and rear, appealing, smooth andquiet – the electric and petrol motors working in real harmony. Some nice interiortouches, like twin 10.25-inch infotainment and instrument cluster displays. Itcomes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating and Kia's welcome 7-year/unlimitedkilometre warranty, however, the battery disappointingly only warranted to150,000 km during the 7-year period. Show #486 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 29th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. FREMONT FACTORY BEING PREPPED FOR TESLA MODEL Y PRODUCTION, MODEL S REFRESH "Tesla is expected to produce the new Model Y at the Fremont factory according to a CNBC report" says CNBC: "Tesla officially hasn't announced where it will produce the Model Y. The automaker says it's considering both the Tesla Factory in California and Gigafactory in Nevada. Because Model Y shares a lot of parts with the Model 3, Fremont could be a wise choice, although the factory is getting cramped. Unofficial sources say that Tesla "has barely begun to place orders for new equipment to manufacture the Model Y. In 2019, Tesla would like to deliver at least 360,000 cars, compared to around 245,000 in 2018." https://insideevs.com/news/352061/fremont-tesla-model-y-production-model-s-refresh/ TESLA HAS CATCHING UP TO DO "Tesla Inc has “a lot of catching up” to do in order to achieve a record quarter, news website Electrek reported on Wednesday, citing Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk’s leaked email to employees." says REuters: "“While our demand is strong, we have a lot of vehicle deliveries to catch up to in order to have a successful quarter,” Musk wrote in the mail. “We also need to address the total cost of getting a car from our factory to the customer. Last quarter, there were many expedites fees and routing inefficiencies that led to higher than expected delivery costs. This makes it much harder for to* break even. “Per my earlier email, if we execute well, Q2 will be an all-time record for Tesla vehicle deliveries and an awesome victory!!” https://electrek.co/2019/05/29/tesla-demand-deliveries-catch-up-record-quarter-elon-musk-leaked-email/ EV CHARGING SITES OUTNUMBER PETROL STATIONS FOR FIRST TIME "New figures from Zap-Map reveal the extent of the UK’s electric vehicle revolution, with the number of public charging locations now surpassing petrol stations for the first time. Data from Zap-Map shows that as of 22 May, there are 8,471 charging locations across the UK, hosting a total of 13,613 charging devices. In contrast, as of the end of April, there are currently only 8,400 petrol stations in the UK, a figure which is continuing to decline. There has been huge growth in the UK public EV charge point market in the past 12 months, with the number of locations increasing 57% in that time. https://www.zap-map.com/ev-charging-sites-outnumber-petrol-stations-for-first-time/ CHINA-MADE TESLA MODEL 3 PRICE ANNOUNCEMENT EXPECTED ON FRIDAY "Bloomberg reports that Tesla is expected to announce prices of the China-made base Tesla Model 3 on Friday, May 31." reports InsideEVs: "The base Model 3 will be produced at the Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, which allows it to avoid the 15% import tax and catch onto Chinese subsidies for New Energy Vehicles. Currently, the cheapest Model 3 in China starts at 377,000 yuan (≈$54,542). Bloomberg says that the new price could be 300,000-350,000 yuan (≈$43,400-50,634) before subsidies. The pricing announcement could be related to the surprise scheduled for May 31, but as everyone knows the Model 3 produced locally will be cheaper than imported, it's hard to say what the surprise really will be." https://insideevs.com/news/351910/china-made-tesla-model-3-price/ GM PLANS OWN LARGE EV CHARGING NETWORK "GM confirmed today that it plans to its own large electric car charging network with thousands of fast-charging stations in the US, but the automaker apparently can’t be bothered to invest in it itself." writes Fred for Electrek: "The American automaker confirmed today that it is teaming up with Bechtel, the largest construction company in the US, “to build thousands of electric vehicle fast-charging stations” across the United States as part of a new charging network." CNN reports: "The American automaker confirmed today that it is teaming up with Bechtel, the largest construction company in the US, “to build thousands of electric vehicle fast-charging stations” across the United States as part of a new charging network. Neither company plans to put money into this project, though. The two companies will create a separate corporation to build the charging network and other companies are being invited to invest in it. Neither GM nor Bechtel would name potential investors while discussions are still ongoing.”" https://electrek.co/2019/05/28/gm-ev-charging-network/ ROLEC, EV.ENERGY UNVEIL NEW SMART CHARGER AND MOBILE APP UK: "Rolec EV is launching a new range of smart home EV chargers that allow drivers to manage charging through an app. The EV HomeSmart chargers will be integrated with the EV.Energy cloud-based backend, and are eligible under Office for Low Emission Vehicles' (OLEV) grant scheme." reports Current NEws: "Drivers will be able to programme the charger to charge at specific times, with the EV.Energy app also integrating with a homeowner's electricity provider to charge at the cheapest rate. Charging history will be available to see through the app, including live charging status, electricity used in kWh, energy costs and carbon savings. The chargers are enabled at speeds of 3.6kW or 7.2kW and are being launched as part of the WallPod EV charging portfolio. It’s the second addition to the portfolio announced this month, with a range of solar powered chargers also being launched." https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/rolec-ev-energy-unveil-new-smart-charger-and-mobile-app TESLA MODEL 3 GETS CERTIFIED IN AUSTRALIA, ORDERS SHOULD OPEN SOON CleanTEchnica says: "On Friday, Tesla received notification from the Australian Government that the company’s application to sell Model 3’s in Australia was approved. From looking at the application, Tesla only applied for the 1726 kg and 1856 kg weights, which correspond to the Long Range Rear Wheel Drive, Long Range All Wheel Drive, and Performance All Wheel Drive models, so the Standard Range and Standard Range Plus won’t be coming to Australia right yet — probably in a few months after they work through the backlog of orders for the higher-end models." USED EV PRICES INCREASE IN UK "Prices of second-hand electric and hybrid vehicles are soaring as demand outstrips supply" says InsideEVs: "electric vehicles - also known as EVs - are rocketing in value, with prices growing 11 percent. In contrast, the average price growth rate for all vehicles has slowed to 1.5 percent - the lowest rate for almost two years." KIA RELEASES REVISED NIRO HYBRID MODELS IN EUROPE "Kia has now started selling the revised versions of the Niro Hybrid and the Niro Plug-in Hybrid that they presented at the Geneva Motor Show." reports electrive.com: "The 2020 models of the two hybrid models can be ordered in the UK from 1 July, where prices start at £24,590 for the Niro Hybrid and £31,945 for the Niro Plug-in Hybrid. The cosmetic changes to Kia’s hybrid models include a revamping of the interior and exterior designs so that the hybrids look more like the fully-electric e-Niro. In Germany, prices start at 26,990 Euro (Niro Hybrid) or 33,990 Euro (Niro Plug-in Hybrid) and will be available from dealers at the end of July." CARLOS GHOSN RELEASED ON BAIL "An an unusual move in Japan, former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn was released on bail Wednesday after 108 days in jail, according to a report in Automotive News." Says Green Car Reports: "Ghosn, who is known as the father of the Nissan Leaf for his work championing the car's production, was arrested in November on charges of allegedly misusing company funds and underreporting his compensation for 10 years. In Japan, criminal suspects are routinely held without bail, and prosecutors can file new charges against jailed suspects to extend their detention, as they had with Ghosn." “I am innocent and totally committed to vigorously defending myself in a fair trial against these meritless and unsubstantiated accusations,” he said in a statement following his release. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121916_japanese-judge-releases-former-nissan-chairman-ghosn-on-bail SUPERCHARGER V3 CHARGES AT 1000 MILES PER HOUR V3 is a completely new architecture for Supercharging. A new 1MW power cabinet with a similar design to our utility-scale products supports peak rates of up to 250kW per car. At this rate, a Model 3 Long Range operating at peak efficiency can recover up to 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes and charge at rates of up to 1,000 miles per hour. Combined with other improvements we’re announcing today, V3 Supercharging will ultimately cut the amount of time customers spend charging by an average of 50%, as modeled on our fleet data.Supercharger stations with V3’s new power electronics are designed to enable any owner to charge at the full power their battery can take – no more splitting power with a vehicle in the stall next to you. With these significant technical improvements, we anticipate the typical charging time at a V3 Supercharger will drop to around 15 minutes. On-Route Battery Warmup New Supercharging infrastructure isn’t the only way we are improving our customers’ charging experience. Beginning this week, Tesla is rolling out a new feature called On-Route Battery Warmup. Now, whenever you navigate to a Supercharger station, your vehicle will intelligently heat the battery to ensure you arrive at the optimal temperature to charge, reducing average charge times for owners by 25%. This combination of higher peak power with V3, dedicated vehicle power allocation across Supercharger sites, and On-Route Battery Warmup enables customers to charge in half the time and Tesla to serve more than twice the number of customers per hour. Additionally, we are also unlocking 145kW charge rates for our 12,000+ V2 Superchargers over the coming weeks. By increasing the number of vehicles we’re able to charge at each Supercharger in a day, the investment we’re making in our network will go significantly further with every V3 station deployed. Paired with other savings, these efficiencies will translate to an increased pace of investment for Superchargers moving forward, with a continued focus on getting to 100% ownership coverage across all regions we operate. We will increase Model S and X charging speeds via software updates in the coming months. V3 Supercharging will roll out to the wider fleet in an over the air firmware update to all owners in Q2 as more V3 Superchargers come online. Our first non-beta V3 Supercharger site will break ground next month, with North American sites ramping in Q2 and Q3 before coming to Europe and Asia-Pacific in Q4. So we need to see all of this in the context of the Model Y, the Semi Truck and the Roadster. PORSCHE TAYCAN DEBUT AND LAUNCH INFORMATION UNVEILED? “We may finally have some much-anticipated information about the Porsche Taycan reveal and deliveries.” “Porsche’s first all-electric car is coming, and many people are extremely excited about its potential. So much so, that orders are already sold out for at least the first year. Reports say that Porsche plans to build about 40,000 cars initially, however, it seems they’re all spoken for at this point. Hybrid Cars were apprised of some information on the Taycan EV Forum. The site came across a tweet from a user whose Porsche rep leaked some new details about the upcoming performance EV’s timeline.” “It claims that the Taycan will be unveiled this coming September, with deliveries starting in January 2020. As Hybrid Cars points out, the Frankfurt Motor Show is in September, so this might be the case.” Per my Porsche rep, Porsche has closed down its Deposit program for the US due to high demand, Sep 2019 unveil confirmed, 1mo prior to unveil build out for orders to open up, Jan 2020 deliveries Dennis C. (@ClarkDennisM) https://insideevs.com/porsche-taycan-debut-launch-information/amp/ KIA BRINGS E-SOUL TO EUROPE, UPGRADES NIRO HYBRID AND PHEV Kia used the Geneva International Motor Show as the platform to introduce the battery-electric e-Soul to Europe, as well as to reveal new upgrades to the Niro Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. Every Kia vehicle on show in Geneva employs the brand’s mild-hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle technology. The e-Soul makes its European debut with a choice of two electric powertrains. Now in its third generation, the Kia e-Soul’s new-generation battery packs—either 64 kWh or 39.2 kWh in capacity—are up to 30% more energy efficient than Europe’s current best-selling electric vehicle. The car is offered in Europe without the option of an internal combustion engine. The new e-Soul goes on-sale in select European markets from the end of the first quarter of 2019, sold as standard with Kia’s 7-year, 150,000-kilometer warranty, which also covers the car’s electric motor and battery pack. ALL-NEW PEUGEOT E-208 LOOKS DYNAMIC IN GENEVA "The all-new Peugeot 208 with the all-electric e-208 version shown in Geneva in GT trim, raised a lot of interest. The new French subcompact brings to the table completely new dynamic styling." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "In the current specification – especially with the 50 kWh battery, WLTP range of 340 km (211 miles) and 100 kW electric motor – it could be the tamer of the Renault ZOE, but there is one doubt. In several months, ZOE will get major upgrade in the form of a second generation version, which should make both cars at least competitive. Orders will be accepted from late summer 2019 on, while the launch is expected in the fall of 2019." https://insideevs.com/peugeot-e-208-debut-geneva-photos-videos/amp/ CURRENT BMW I3 TO GET REVAMP RATHER THAN ALL-NEW MODEL “The BMW i3 is entering its seventh year of production, but the electric car will continue to be produced with further updates planned. The BMW i3 will last beyond the usual seven-year model cycle and get further updates, according to the boss of BMW i Division." Reports John McIlroy for AutoExpress: "The electric city car recently received its second battery upgrade, taking the capacity to 120Ah (42.2kWh) and the real-world range to around 160 miles. However, speaking to Auto Express at the recent Geneva Motor Show, i Division chief Robert Irlinger said the latest battery tweaks would not be the last upgrades in the i3’s life - and stressed that the car is not bound by conventional life cycles." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/i3/106240/current-bmw-i3-to-get-revamp-rather-than-all-new-model NISSAN TO INTRODUCE E-POWER MODELS IN EUROPE Nissan unveiled the IMQ concept crossover, equipped with its award-winning e-POWER system, and announced it will launch the electrified powertrain technology in Europe. The technology will debut in European markets by 2022, Roel de Vries, Nissan corporate vice president, said at the Geneva International Motor Show. e-POWER has been a hit with consumers in Japan, where it’s helped make the Nissan Note the country’s best-selling registered car. Combining 100% electric motor drive with a gasoline engine that charges the battery, e-POWER cars give customers instant, smooth acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency. Introducing the technology in Europe will reinforce Nissan’s leadership in electrified vehicles in the region, where the Nissan LEAF is already the best-selling electric car. Building on the success of LEAF, e-POWER will be among a suite of new technologies coming to Nissan’s best-selling vehicles in Europe in the coming three years. By 2022 sales of electrified Nissan vehicles will increase five-fold, and by the end of that year will be double the market average. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 1st March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER it’s ANTHONY CARROLL from Seattle, and thank you CHARLES HALL for increasing your support. More on the Tesla news from Tom Randall at Bloomberg: "The top-line performance Model 3 price declined to $58,000 from $60,900. That’s $20,000 cheaper than when it was first released last year. It’s also a bit quicker, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and having a top speed of 162 mph. Musk told reporters that making these final price cuts has been “excruciating,” and there will be no future price reductions to the Model 3. He declined to answer a question about the base model’s profitability. Tesla also reintroduced a lower-priced Model S sedan, which now starts at $79,000 with 270 miles of range. There’s also a long-range version starting at $83,000 with a 335-mile range, and a performance version starting at $99,000." NISSAN REVEALS U.S. PRICING FOR LEAF E-PLUS: COSTS MORE THAN MODEL 3 "Nissan has just revealed U.S. pricing for the 62-kWh version of the LEAF. Unfortunately, pricing seems a bit too high following yesterday’s $35,000 Tesla Model 3 announcement." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "There’s a lot to like with this new LEAF. Its 62-kWh battery provides a range of up to 226 miles. Had it not been for Tesla shocking the world last night with the Model 3 base price announcement, we’d be rather excited for the LEAF. However, all versions of the LEAF e-Plus check in at a higher price than $35,000. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2019 Nissan LEAF PLUS are: LEAF S PLUS $36,550 USD, LEAF SV PLUS $38,510 USD, LEAF SL PLUS $42,550 USD" Inside EVs Forum user Bloggin: "$35k gets you the standard Model 3, but who wants a Tesla without Autopilot?? Add the $3k and it’s $38k. Want a color other than black and now it’s $39,500. Want wheels other than black, now it’s $41k and well equipped and still below the Leaf SL at $42,550." And user Brian: "Leaf still qualifies for the full tax credit whereas Tesla only gets half. In four more months, Tesla will only get a fourth of the credit. By the time the Leaf loses the credit, Nissan will have put cash on the hood. So the e-Plus will always cost less than even a base Model 3." https://insideevs.com/nissan-u-s-pricing-leaf-e-plus/ PEUGEOT BRINGS FULLY ELECTRIC STAND TO GENEVA PEUGEOT will be showcasing its new plans for an electric future at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, unveiling the all-new 100% electric PEUGEOT e-208 alongside the all-new PEUGEOT 208 petrol and diesel variants and hybrid 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED Concept. Joining the new models will be a Plug-in Hybrid range and a revamped electrified version of the iconic PEUGEOT Lion. PEUGEOT will be unveiling the all-new PEUGEOT 208 model, which will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains along with a zero emission all-electric derivative, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208. Powered by a 100 kW motor, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208 will be the first electric model available from PEUGEOT’s new electric range. The 5-door hatchback features a 50kWh battery, positioned under the floor to maintain interior space, which provides a range of up to 211 miles (WLTP) from a full charge. The all-new PEUGEOT e-208 comes with three driving modes: Eco, to optimise range, Normal, tuned for comfort, and Sport, which puts the emphasis on performance. Customers can choose from a range of charging methods for the all-new PEUGEOT e-208, including 100 kW rapid charging, capable of 80% charge in 30 minutes. http://www.peugeotpress.co.uk/releases/1726 AUDI STAND AT GENEVA WILL BE EXCLUSIVELY ELECTRICELECTRIC/HYBRID "The Audi stand at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show will be exclusively occupied by electrically powered models, including the world premiere of the Audi Q4 e-tron concept and the European presentation of the Audi e-tron GT concept." according to Robin Whitlock for Renewable Energy Magazine: "In all, a total of four all-electric cars will headline for the brand, all of which will have been rolled out in series production form by the end of 2020. In addition four new plug-in hybrid models will also make their debuts, and the world of Formula E racing will be represented by the latest Audi e-tron FE05 racing car. Deliveries of the Audi e-tron, the first member of this new quartet of electric vehicles, are set to begin soon. The series-production version of its coupé equivalent, the Audi e-tron Sportback, will be introduced later in 2019. Another electric car – the Audi Q2 L e-tron - will be presented in a few weeks in China and will reach its first customers in that market in 2019. Two further series-production debuts will then follow in 2020: the Audi e-tron GT and Audi Q4 e-tron. Concept cars on the stand in Geneva provide a look at these two future models." https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/audi-stand-at-geneva-will-be-exclusively-20190228 SEAT SHOWS VW MEB-BASED EL-BORN EV IN GENEVA "We've already seen spy photos of the production version of Volkswagen's new Golf-sized fully electric car, alternatively referred to as the I.D. or the Neo. As an intent to show that the MEB platform underpinning the Volkswagen will be utilized on other Volkswagen group cars, Seat, the Spanish carmaker, has released images of its own take on the MEB architecture." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen will bring the I.D. electric hatchback to market first, instead of using Seat to test the waters. But the Seat is hardly a second banana, as its figures are convincing enough: the 62-kWh battery pack gives it a range of 260 miles (on the WLTP cycle), and its 204-horsepower electric powertrain takes it to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. With 100-kW DC charging, the battery reaches 80-percent capacity in 47 minutes. The VW version's production is slated to begin in November 2019." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/01/seat-el-born-ev-vw-meb-geneva/#slide-7533531 JAGUAR I-PACE NAMED UK CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019 The Jaguar I-PACE has emerged victorious at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2019, after a closely fought battle with three other manufacturers. Having been named the Best Executive car when the category winners were announced in February, the Jaguar was pitted against the 11 other triumphant new cars to fight it out for the top honour. The UK Car of the Year Awards judges were quick to praise the attributes of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle. TV presenter Jonny Smith said: “Few traditional manufacturers can match the I-PACE for ground-up groundbreaking design and tech. A wonderful combo of unique design, spirited driving behaviour and useful EV range/rapid charge capability.” WHY HONDA BOSSES WEREN'T CONVINCED ABOUT THE E PROTOTYPE "The project manager of the Honda e prototype has admitted that the development team had to overcome opposition from company management before the car was confirmed for production." says Autocar: "The retro-styled electric-powered machine, whose styling closely resembles that of the Urban EV prototype, is a compact city car with a range of around 125 miles. Kohei Hitomi said Honda management was not initially convinced by the car's styling, small size and limited range. " He said: "“The positive feedback for the Urban EV concept car was certainly a breakthrough to convince internally that a small-size EV would make sense and be appreciated. I also tried to convince people that an EV is meant to be used in urban conditions, [where] the [small] size of the car is the most important aspect. That's where it makes most sense. From that perspective, the small size is the most important aspect, so that was how we tried to convince people. The concept helped the production car to get approval, and the production car helped the concept to look like what it looked like." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/why-honda-bosses-werent-convinced-about-e-prototype KIA TO DISPLAY UPGRADED HYBRID NIRO MODELS AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW "Kia has announced that refreshed versions of the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will be make their public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Both models now come with an exterior design in-line with the all-electric e-Niro, an improved interior finish and new tech features." says Jack Healy for CarKeys: "The South Korean marque has given the Niro hybrid models new front and rear bumpers, redesigned headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and new alloy wheel options. Inside, Kia has made significant tech upgrades in the form of the optional 10.25-inch widescreen touchscreen and seven-inch instrument cluster display, which can be fitted instead of the standard eight-inch infotainment screen and 4.2-inch instrument panel. Both versions of the Niro use a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is teamed with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Hybrid pairs the combustion engine with a 1.56kWh lithium-ion battery pack, while the PHEV comes with an 8.9kWh unit." https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/kia-to-display-upgraded-hybrid-niro-models-at-geneva-motor-show COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. UPDATE ON CHINA 2018 SALES From Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt "788,000 pure electric passenger vehicles sold in China last year or just over 3% mix of the passenger car market. Just under 200,000 pure electric passenger cars were registered in Western Europe during the same period according to own provisional data." MERCEDES-BENZ IS PLANNING SMALLER SUV EV THIS YEAR Greg Kable at Autocar is full of the speculation, but is he right? "The upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLB SUV will feature a pure-electric EQ B version alongside petrol, diesel and petrol-electric hybrid powertrains. The EQ B, sitting underneath the recently revealed EQ C, promises a range of up to 310 miles and will feature an aerodynamically optimised GLB-based body, according to factory insiders. The new Mercedes-Benz SUV, which goes under the internal codename X247, has been conceived as a direct rival to the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Lexus NX. It will be priced and positioned above the existing GLA crossover hatchback when it goes on sale in the UK early next year, following a planned unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show in September." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-mercedes-glb-suv-feature-all-electric-eq-b-version UPDATED BMW 7 SERIES GETS GIGANTIC GRILLE The drivetrain you'll be interested in: The turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder and electric motor with a combined 389 hp (745e) a plug in hybrid. "To celebrate its fifth birthday, the current-generation BMW 7 Series went out and got a nose job for the 2020 model year. The automaker claims the twin-kidney grille on its flagship sedan encompasses 40 percent more surface area than before, and it's likely the only thing people will discuss regarding the 7 Series" according to Cars.com: "The plug-in hybrid 745e, meanwhile, swaps last year's turbocharged four-cylinder for a turbo six-cylinder, which pairs with a transmission-integrated electric motor for maximum system output of 389 hp and 442 pounds-feet of torque. The motor gets power from a higher-capacity battery, now rated at 12.0 kilowatt-hours versus the outgoing 740e's 9.2 kwh. That may increase the 745e's all-electric range versus the 740e's EPA-rated 14 miles, and it should doubtless raise the car's eligible plug-in federal tax credit versus its current $4,668. As of this writing, both the range and tax credits on the 745e have yet to be published." https://www.cars.com/articles/heres-lookin-at-you-kidneys-updated-bmw-7-series-gets-gigantic-grille-1420757031373/ PORSCHE STARTS PREPARING ITS ZUFFENHAUSEN SITE FOR TAYCAN "Porsche is setting the stage for the ramp of one of its most important vehicles to date — the Taycan — the veteran carmaker’s first all-electric car." reports Simon Alvarez for Teslarati: "The Taycan is expected to start production sometime in 2019, and to ensure that its facilities are ready for the vehicle, projects are now underway in Porsche’s Zuffenhausen facility, which will house the manufacturing line for the electric sedan. The company describes the construction of the structure as a balancing act, considering that the facility must be completed while the production of the 911, Boxster, and Cayman are continuing their usual output. As noted by Porsche CEO Olliver Blume, for one, the company has logged almost 3,000 Taycan reservations in Norway alone. That’s a country where Porsche sells about 600 vehicles per year on average." https://www.teslarati.com/porsche-taycan-production-ramp-zuffenhausen-site/ VW CONSIDERING ELECTRIC LAND ROVER RIVAL "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said in Autobild’s interview that the company is considering an all-electric true off-road capable SUV, which would be similar to the Land Rover Defender. Jost notes that there are no production models in such segment. The designers were apparently commissioned to draw sketches now." according to a Mark Kane piece for InsideEVs.com: "We must add that off-road ready vehicles will appear on the market in the near-future, as the electric drivetrain is a perfect solution for such driving (provided you can afford a huge battery). Rivian R1S or Bollinger B1 are just examples of what’s coming. Volkswagen probably will be able to build a big SUV using its general MEB platform in top configuration (over 100 kWh battery and dual motor all-wheel drive drivetrain). Having a universal platform not only enables VW to consider such cars, but even incentives to do it, as the development costs will spread out over more models." https://insideevs.com/vw-considering-electric-land-rover-rival/ KIA PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN EUROPE SURGE TO 4.4% OF TOTAL VOLUME Sent to me by listener Tom Rafferty. "Kia happily announced its tenth consecutive year of growth of car sales in Europe by 4.7% to 494,304. The year 2018 was especially good for electrified models (including hybrids), which closed with 58,029 sales (up 36.0% year-over-year) at a share of 11.7% (1/8 of total volume)." and all thanks to InsideEVs for keeping their eyes on the sales numbers: "Kia Niro PHEV & e-Niro. Thanks to electrification, Kia Niro became the 5th best-selling model in 2018 for Kia in Europe. Among 45,255 sales (up 33.6%) over 22% were plug-ins: Niro Hybrid – 34,642. Niro Plug-In Hybrid – 9,951. e-Niro: 662 (introduced in December 2018). The Kia Soul EV is awaiting upgrade in 2019 to the new longer-range generation. In 2018, Kia sold a record 6,402 Soul EVs (up 12.0%), which is more than the gasoline and diesel Soul combined." https://insideevs.com/kias-plug-in-car-sales-europe/ VOLVO INVESTS IN HIGH POWER WIRELESS CHARGING Finally from electrive: "The Swedes’ financial arm, the Volvo Group Venture Capital AB, say they made an investment in Momentum Dynamics and their high power inductive charging technology. The start-up of Philadelphia is working towards 200+kW to charge heavier electric vehicles with no connection needed." "Moreover, Momentum Dynamics apparently has now opened the order books for the second generation of their system that is capable to deliver 300 kW. In reply to our request for comment, Stefan Söderling [Investment Director at Volvo Group Venture Capital] specified the technology as “designed to offer 75 kW per module” so that four models generate said 300 kW. He added though that “we can at this stage not comment if it (inductive charging) may be used in future products or applications” by the Volvo Group." https://www.electrive.com/2019/01/15/volvo-invests-in-high-power-wireless-charging/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
