On Episode 123, we're finishing up our NYC Air Play series but this time giving you the college radio version. Last episode we had plenty of G-Unit, Dipset, D-Block, Terror Squad and The Roc, but this episode we're giving you Non Phixion, Screwball, Wee Bee Foolish, D.I.T.C., Juggaknots, Bumpy Knuckles, El-P and J-Live to provide the perfect balance NYC had to offer in the 2000's. Unfortunately, Trugoy passed away during the recording of this episode and if you've been a long-time listener of Take It Personal, you know just how much De La Soul means to us. David Jolicoeur was an amazing lyricist and responsible for so many great moments in hip-hop, so needless to say we're back in the lab working on a very necessary tribute to him. Enjoy episode 123 and stay tuned prepare to drop our next episode where we pay respects to Plug 2. www.takeitpersonalradio.com Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonal Online store: https://take-it-personal.creator-spring.com/ (enter Win25 for 25% off) Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal
On Episode 122 we're going back to NYC circa 2000-2005, where mix show radio dominated the airwaves. Where clan's, posse's, crew's and clik's peaked with G-Unit, Dipset, D-Block, Terror Squad, Ruff Ryders, Murder Inc and The Roc. This was fresh-off the Nas and Jay-Z battle, when NYC was thriving again and when a kid named Justin Smith completely changed the game. Justin Smith aka Just Blaze went on to produce more hit records than any other hip-hop producer during this time. I can't stress this enough, but before there was Kanye West, there was Just Blaze. There also was no bigger artist than 50 Cent. He wasn't just big in music, he was internally known with every major corporation for his undeniable charisma, street anthems and fashion. And speaking of fashion, remember the oversized white tees? How about Mitchell & Ness jerseys? You also had to have a fresh pair of Tims and white Air Force 1's. Who could forget those gaudy Canal Street watches we wanted to pass-off as Jacobs? We may have lacked self-awareness in fashion but we definitely can acknowledge the incredible music to come out of this era. Whether you bumped Hot 97, Kiss or Power or downloaded joints off Napster, Limewire or Kazaa, you knew special this time was. We gotta thank to Nas, Jadakiss, Killa Cam, 50, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, Ghostface, Fabulous, Black Rob, M.O.P., Ja, Styles P and Fat Joe for giving NYC back their sound. This show is a homage NYC mix show and because we're always trying to find a balance like Atmosphere, our next episode we're giving you our college radio edition. Think of Non Phixion, D.I.T.C., Freddie Foxxx, Screwball, Wee Bee Foolish, El-P and J-Live. Think Fat Beats, A-1 and Turntable Lab. Think of the joints you copped off Sandboxautomatic and HipHopSite. Think of the message board era of Okayplayer, HipHopInfinity, UGHH and the best of all, the Philaflava forums. We are going to give you the ultimate yin and yang that NYC hip-hop had to offer during these great times. https://linktr.ee/_red_river_podcast Long time coming but we finally had Howie on the show. Also invited Joe Songco to be my co host this week cuz I knew the 3 of us could talk for hours. Topics covered were everything from baseball, Kiss, Queens NY, Anthrax, Non Phixion, etc. We talked for 2 hours and could have gone another 2. But we will just do a part 2 for that one. Episode 106 is going to leave most of you in neck braces. After spending the last few episodes on Kanye West, we're taking it back to the essence of Take It Personal Radio. We've got head bangers from M.O.P., Ghostface Killah, Gang Starr, The Beatnuts, Xzibit, Dilated Peoples, Mobb Deep, Big Pun, Non Phixion and Onyx to name a few. At the break, we discuss the classic indie record The Future Is Now. Ill Bill and Sabac catches some shrapnel in the discussion, but it's all love. We also discuss Black Star's No Fear of Time and Kweli gets annihilated, ain't no love. Other topics include David Chappelle, Onyx, Supreme and we ask where do the biggest supporters of hip-hop reside. This episode is what TIP is all about - plenty of laughs, good discussion and even better music! www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio
We had this week's guest fall through at the last minute so we sat down and listened to Non Phixion's The Future Is Now rather than doing nothing. Non Phixion's only full length studio album as a collective celebrated 20 years recently so we decided to give it another listen and have a conversation about it. No number, no guest and even still we find a way to drop this work for your ears. Beers, Beats & The Biz is live now on iTunes, Soundcloud and Spotify: Follow us on social media, download, rate, subscribe, share and don't forget to five star rate us.
Episode 103 is the 3rd installment of our indie hip-hop tribute series. This time, we're joined by Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, who sits with the crew to discuss one of hip hop's greatest eras. We hear stories about how it started for them, the Masta Ace beef, working with Bobbito, The Alchemist, Rashida Jones, Beetlejuice, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch, Eminem and Cage. During the late 90s and early 00's, Eastern Conference Records was a staple in independent hip-hop. Who better to tell vivid tales of the indie hip-hop movement than one of the guys responsible for it? We've got joints by Non Phixion, Saukrates, Natural Elements, Jigmastas, J-Live, Arsonists, Company Flow, Cage, All Natural, Rascalz, Cannibal Ox, J.U.I.C.E., Sir Menelik, Kool Keith, Ill Advised, Choclair, Mr. Lif, Mike Zoot and of course, The High & Mighty. What made this era one of the greatest? The music was fresh, innovating, original, honest and most importantly fun. D-I-Y in full effect. Record stores in full effect. Online chat groups where you shared music was definitely in effect. That feeling of excitement while scarfing down a slice of pizza or Gray's Papaya because you couldn't wait to see what Fat Beats on 6th Ave had. When Fat Beats wasn't enough for your fix, you went to the LES to peep A-1 or took the iron horse to Fulton Street, to check out Beat Street and grab a treat from Juniors after. The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical. Now, let's re-live those memories and magic this era gave us. From my Old School dusty archives. And just because....
The first episode I did with Lord Goat (formerly Goretex) is in the top five most listened to episodes of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace. You know him from Non Phixion and Heavy Metal Kings, and of course his solo material. This was long overdue, especially because his newest record dropped a couple months ago. "Final Expenses" with Stu Bangas. In my opinion, it's the rap record of the year. We go deep. This is the doom and gloom episode. Strap in kids... this gets dark. Vaccines, 9/11, Global enslavement, control, instagram head games and why John Stamos is a jerkoff. Supercoven.
On this episode we talked to the Lord Goat aka Goretex of the legendary Hip Hop group Non Phixion & member of powerhouse rap collective Heavy Metal Kings a long with Ill Bill & Vinnie Paz. Lord Goat talks about his storied career & the turbulent ups & downs of the music business. He also tells some very fascinating tales from Non Phixion's early years including hanging out with Russell Simmons at his penthouse in New York City . BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the LORD GOAT interview session! It can’t get much better than this, Vangardians. Lord Goat fka GORETEX of the legendary NON-PHIXION has been warning us of this exact moment in time over the past two DECADES. Thanks to friend of Southern Vangard Radio, J57, we connected with GORE ELOHIM to get his take on the COVID-19 pandemic, having to live with “The Future Is Now” all of these years and the advice he has for all us during this unprecedented time. Don’t fret, we get into PLENTY of music talk - including the recent reboot of “COFFIN SYRUP”, his upcoming project with STU BANGAS as well as ILL BILL, and what else he has in the works this year and beyond. You know what it is - there’s so much more inside we couldn’t even begin to explain - so stop your pussy footing around - drop one of those bullshit podcasts out your playlist to make room for the SV, push play and while you’re listening just remember Doe and Meeks ALWAYS serve up that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live April 26, 2020 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks
BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep251: COVID-19 Edition 11! It’s Week 5 of quarantine here at Southern Vangard Radio - Doe and Meeks are getting pretty good at this virtual thang for the most part, hopefully we’ll be able to return to a more normal show in the near future. Until then, it’s Doe in Marietta and Meeks in the SWATS still putting it together Twice A Week for ya’ll regardless! Lots of new joints this week for the mix, although we are admittedly a little lighter than usual - but we’re making up for it by having a longer than usual preview of our upcoming Thursday interview session with the legendary LORD GOAT fka GORETEX of NON-PHIXION! Our convo with GORE ELOHIM is can’t miss content, so go ahead and press play on Ep251 to hear a few joints off his latest release, a reboot of 2011’s “Coffin Syrup,” and lock in to the interview snippets at the end of the mix until the full session drops on Thursday! BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the SABAC RED interview session, COVID-19 Edition 02! First and foremost, Meeks and Doe hope everyone is taking care of themselves physically, mentally and spiritually given the situation the entire world is in right now. Second, we’re gonna keep delivering that Smithsonian Grade twice a week as usual, but a little differently as Meeks has to dial in virtually for the time being. Given the special set of circumstances, it’s time for a special interview session. This week, with blessings from Sabac, we’ve decided to give y’all a glimpse into the prep and banter that goes on before the interview officially starts - trust us, you don’t want to skip ahead! So - Sabac Red, where do we start? As a solo artist and as a member of the legendary NON-PHIXION alongside ILL BILL, LORD GOAT (aka GORETEX) & DJ ECLIPSE, he’s been educating, and damn near foreshadowing, us on precisely what’s going on in the world right now for over 20 years. We immediately get into the state of the world today, what’s going down on the ground in the Bay Area and the perspective he has now given life is imitating his art. Don’t worry - we talk music too, folks - and more importantly, his new music with J57! ‘Bac breaks down how their first collaboration in 8 years came together, why the Non-Phixion tour last fall gave him the inspiration to make new music and how his son, DJ LUFU, helped him craft the chorus and ended up being on the track! We also get into a TON of history about his days running promo at WILD PITCH, how his relationship with MC SERCH developed, hearing NAS’ “Illmatic” and O.C.’s “Word...Life” come together in real time - the stories are straight ridiculous, folks. We might have to get a part 2 together, we could have gone on for hours. Alright, enough talking, more listening - cop the new single “Block Cheese & Bocce” from Sabac Red and J57 now, wash your hands and keep your distance while you tune in to what is ALWAYS that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live March 22, 2020 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks
BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep246: COVID-19 Edition 01! Well folks - what do you say? Nothing to say that hasn’t already been said other than we’re back at it - albeit a little differently. Don’t get it twisted - DOE & MEEKS will STILL be providing you that twice a week Smithsonian Grade while also doing what we can to protect our families & the community. The format remains the same - mix on Tuesday, interview session on Thursday - it just means Meeks will be dialing in to Dirty Blanket Studios live from the comfort of his own home until we get through this thing. Got it? Ok - back to our regularly scheduled program. If you haven’t noticed, there is a TON, and we mean a TON of great, new hip-hop out, so we’re gonna light up Ep246 with a bunch of new joints, as well as a mid-mix interview with ESTEE NACK! It’s been a few years since our interview session with Nack, so we got him on the horn to catch up on new projects with GRUBBY PAWZ & SUPERIOR as well as get the scoop on his near-death experience in the DR at the end of 2019 - right after the release of his jaw-dropping feature on WESTSIDE GUNN’s “Hitler Wears Hermes 7.” If that ain’t enough to get you riled up - our interview session this week is with none other than SABAC RED of NON-PHIXION! Vangardians - can you believe the timing of this? Sabac and crew have been warning ya’ll about the situation the world is in right now for 20+ years - and it’s THIS week that we have an in-depth interview with him!? We can’t make this shit up! Check the interview snippets at the end of the mix until we drop the full on Thursday, and while you’re listening - delete those other half-ass podcasts from your playlists that distract you from the real - they can’t deliver it like Doe & Meeks can! Sat down with our friend The Lord Goat, to discuss an assortment of topics. His name change, the upcoming ep with Stu Bangaz, and the Non Phixion tour. We jumped topics, and went from him meeting Qtip at a dunkin donuts. As well as early Geffen records stories. Didnt go too deep on origin because we covered that on my other podcast," If i ruled the world" episode 14. Come join us and go down a musical rabbit hole we call metal minutiae ! Enter the Supercoven. The Lord Goat aka Goretex! A member of the legendary Non Phixion, Heavy Metal Kings. Brooklyn Goon. Glenwood Projects. He invited me to his house out on Long Island to talk. Real Hip Hop, dope discussions, all of this and much more on this premiere episode of Hip Hop Marvels Podcast!!!! The legendary DJ Eclipse! I met up with him in Queens to chop it up for a little bit. He takes us way back to when he was a kid growing up in Rhode Island when he first discovered Hip Hop and how he became a DJ. A member of the Rock Steady Crew, Eclipse broke out being a member of Non Phixion after making a name for himself in his town by DJing parties. He takes us through all of that, La Coka Nostra, his history in radio from having "The Halftime Show", his company "Pay to Winn Management" all the way up to his show on Eminem's channel on Sirius Satellite Radio, Shade 45 with "Rap Is Outta Control" with DJ Riz. A lot of history with insight into his career and how he has over 30,000 records in every room in his house including the kitchen but not the bathroom. This was dope to do. Much respect to Eclipse! Enjoy.
Joe & Toby connect the many musical dots between the iconic hip-hop trio 3rd Bass and their biggest hit “Pop Goes The Weasel” (1991). What we geek out over in this episode: The life and music of English singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Henry Rollins, The Who’s “Eminence Front” (1982), Stevie Wonder’s “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” (1974), “Back to the Grill” (1992), and Non-Phixion’s “Black Helicopters” (2004).
I sat down with the Cult Leader. ILL BILL. Founder of "Non Phixion", a member of "La Coka Nostra" and along with Vinnie Paz, he is one half of "Heavy Metal Kings". He invited me to his house in Brooklyn to have a conversation, which, he rarely does. So, for that, I'm thankful. We go way back to Canarsie, to 5714 Farrigut Road in the early 80's when he started listening to metal and hip hop in the Glenwood Projects. When he was in a death metal band, "Injustice", playing the "Battle of the Bands" at South Shore High School (which I attended as well) and playing at L'amour opening for bands like "Sepultura". From the beginning of the formation of "Non Phixion", his solo career, the birth of "La Coka Nostra" with Danny Boy, DJ Lethal, Everlast of "House of Pain", Slaine and Big Left. To working with DJ Muggs for the "Kill Devil Hills" record and the formation of "Heavy Metal Kings". There's a lot of history here leading up to his brand new record that he did with Stu-Bangas, "Cannibal Hulk". Sit back and study your lessons and enjoy this episode with ILL BILLY IDOL with a little cameo appearance from our old friend "Tommy Rebel". Respect.

Eclipse also talks about the history of hip hop group Non Phixion and the significance of the Rock Steady Crew in Hip Hop culture. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the #DJEclipse interview session! Fresh off putting a ribbon on an incredible 18 years of The Halftime Show @ WNYU radio this past March, Eclipse gathers 'round the Southern Vangard Radio campfire to dish on the old and the new for almost 90 minutes! We kick things off with a report on how things have gone since the final episode of show, it’s humble beginnings and evolution as well as how college radio has changed over the years - which ultimately led to Eclipse breaking away from the college radio platform. Of course we hop in the wayback machine and talk about Eclipse’s beginnings in Rhode Island, navigating a move down South in the mid-80s and how the universe managed to put him on the path to hip-hop history while he was there via chance meetings with T-Ray and MC Serch. Once the story heads up north to NYC, we hear about his days at Wild Pitch, being at the session for O.C.’s “Time’s Up”, his transition to Fat Beats and eventual involvement with the almighty Non-Phixion & Uncle Howie Records. We get into the new new as well as Eclipse gives us an update on his “Rap Is Outta Control” show on Sirius radio, running his artist management firm Pay to Winn and his involvement in planning the annual Rock Steady Crew anniversaries. All of this and more is inside folks - so pull up a chair, press play and remember it’s nothing but that #smithsonian #grade // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #dj #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #PROVIDENCE #COLUMBIA #NYC #WORLDWIDE Recorded live March 29, 2016 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks

This Wednesday, we were blessed with the presence of the one and only DJ Eclipse of Rock Steady Crew, Non Phixion, and Halftime Show fame. Naturally Peter and E took a trip down memory lane as they reminisced about Fat Beats and Tramps and shared some pretty crazy stories. Like that time Mariah Carey introduced herself to Eclipse thinking that he was Stretch Armstrong. Or that time Necro threw a dead pigeon into the crowd. Great times. Shout out to Sam Diamond for winning our first ever ticket giveaway on #NW3RADIO, and see if you can spot a very familiar voice from Hot 97 in the mix too.
**TO LISTEN OR DOWNLOAD SEE THE END OF THE SHOW DESCRIPTION!** Broadcast on location from an extremely active derelict 19th Century factory grounds - on this epic six hour journey into darkness we have: Ill Bill joins us for a feature-length interview to discuss his new project with Vinnie Paz, Heavy Metal Kings coming in 2011. We discuss the aesthetics of the album as well as exploring his relationship with brother Necro in 2010 and his upcoming project with Sean Price, entitled The Pill. In addition to all of this, Ill Bill suggests that there may well be a reunion between underground hip hop icons Non Phixion, including Goretex, for a tour and possible future album work. A must hear for all hip hop fans worldwide. Joell Ortiz is the man of the moment. In this frenetic and entertaining interview, we discuss and dispel the numerous accusations and rumours surrounding his involvement with Slaughterhouse, Joe Budden and their forthcoming signing to Shady Records. As well as divulging information about Eminem's new 2011 album, including a new track he is recording at the moment with Royce and Slaughterhouse, Joell explores the possibilities once his Free Agent album drops and he is a personification of its title. We talk future collaborations including his track on the new Kool G Rap album and his inclusion on Pharoahe Monch's long-awaited project. Twista has had one of the most prolific and long-lasting careers in urban music. With his new album, Perfect Storm, released November 9th and a feature-length documentary being filmed based upon his life by Big Punisher film-maker Vlad Yudin, Twista has a lot to look forward to. In this interview we go deeper than the average and debate the importance of change within society, recognising how the words rappers utter into microphones can do more than simply make heads bop. We talk Obama, Wocka Flocka and more in a concentrated effort on all parties. Chuck D is one of the most active men in hip hop. Fresh from a massively successful Public Enemy US tour, Chuck finds time to join us for a typically intense and thought-evoking discussion about the digital revolution within hip hop, the importance of his forthcoming South Africa tour, the difference between truly great hip hop "artists" and rappers and much more in this inspiring 40 minutes with an icon. Sucio Smash, until two weeks ago, hosted one of the most important, radically uncompromising radio shows in hip hop. So the question remains as to why on earth his show, Squeeze Radio, would be discontinued by the station that had benefited from his presence and his predecessors presence, for over 20 years. We talk to the man himself about the incident, the ethos of good hip hop radio in general, his "big" future plans and much more in a very important interview for Conspiracy Worldwide Radio and hip hop as a whole. Diabolic released one of this year's most awe-inspiring albums so it was a pleasure to talk with him once more about his forthcoming album and his project on Redphone Records with Nightwalker and Reef The Lost Cause, his dissatisfaction at many live show promoters around the globe - PLUS! a live Diabolic spit to kneecap any competition. Goretex has been busy making new music. He has a release coming before the end of the year and is eager to show the world that Goretex (Supercoven)is still a massive force to be the reckoned with and an emcee that will continue to break new boundaries with his words. Keeping with the Halloween theme, Goretex takes us on an informative journey into UFO Disclosure, Scientology, cult leaders and even finds time to share with us some facts about key UFO governmental cover-ups. Are Non Phixion going to regroup? Goretex says he is all ears. AND THAT'S NOT ALL! Steve Leighton has been a real vampire for over 8 years. His website http://vampirewebsite.net claims he is wanted by the US government for his lifestyle choice, so it was our intrigue that brought us to talk with him on this dark Halloween special. What he reveals to us in this feature is so genuinely creepy, it will make you change your mind, your heart and possibly your underpants. PLUS!
