“Forest bathing” is the exceptionally simple Japanese practice of taking a walk — or a seat — in the woods. Why? For your health, of course! In our last episode, we learned about Chicago's urban forest — including the $416 million in benefits all those trees provide, in terms of energy cost savings, stormwater mitigation and air purification. Today, we're taking advantage of that urban forest by taking a bath in it. (And no, there is no soap or water required.) Our guide is the co-founder of The Spiritual Guidance Training Institute, Jeanette Banashak, who's also a faculty member at Erikson Institute downtown. Banashak has been leading forest bathing and nature companionship experiences for four years. She took Curious City to the Jarvis Bird Sanctuary on the North Side for what she called “a playful, slow, mindful, joyful walk [and] sit in the natural world.” The goal of forest bathing is to disconnect from urban life, de-stress and connect with nature. Banashak said the practice is rife with health benefits, from lowering blood pressure to improving immune function and calming your parasympathetic nervous system. And although the practice does not require a guide, Banashak has a dream of training facilitators of these experiences to offer weekly sessions, year-round, on every side of the city. Lucky for us, Chicago has plenty of parks, bird sanctuaries, and natural spaces in which you can forest bathe. So join us. All you need to do is make the time and press play.
Whilst at Everest Basecamp this year, Kenton recorded this episode with Mark Fisher and Erich Roepke who made arguably the most exciting Everest discovery of recent years when they found Andrew Cormyn (“Sandy”) Irvine's boot on the North Side of the mountain late last year. It was almost exactly 100 years since Irvine and Mallory went missing on their 1924 Everest expedition and whilst Mallory's remains were found in 1999, there has been no trace of Irvine… until now. Erich and Mark tell Kenton what led them to make this discovery and their subsequent actions. We're not going to give anything else away here - tune in to hear the whole story!

When your son has co-written and directed a full feature movie it's a big deal. When this movie has been chosen to open the Generation section of the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival you start to get excited, and before you know it you are in Berlin on a snowy Valentines Day in a huge auditorium excitedly waiting to see the movie for the first time. The opening night was a sell out with 1,000 people gathering in the bar and lobby area before the doors opened for the theatre. I wanted to capture this special occasion so with a mixture of nerves and excitement I turned on the microphone and chatted with some of the stars of the movie and the producers to learn about their roles and to get a hint of what we were about to see on the big screen. First I spoke with two of the actors in the movie, Lewis Brophy and Ian Tabone. To learn more about the business side of the movie and the importance of the festival itself I spoke with producers Rory Gilmartin and Meridith Duff. And then just before his huge night began I managed to catch my son, Brendan Canty, to capture his excitement on what must be one of the biggest professional moments of his life. While the cast and crew were here for the international premiere of Christy, what the huge crowd were not expecting was that Knocknaheeny from the Northside of Cork were here in force and before we filed into the theatre we were treated to a special flavour of Cork by the Kabin Crew. It's time to take our seats and watch a movie! Christy will be on our big screens this summer.. Sox fans! Our Chicago White Sox were embarrassed this past weekend by the Chicago Cubs. When will the pain stop? When will the Sox be competitive again? It's a sickening feeling to realize the good times might be very far away. We are hanging onto prospects, hope and the feeling that it can't be this way forever. There are silver linings... not many... but they are there. Jonathan Cannon has had a nice month of May and Miguel Vargas was tough to stop on the North Side. Little sizzle and no steak. Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson are reinstated? When, if ever, will they be inducted into the Hall of Fame? Thank you for the continued support. Go Sox. #WhiteSox
