Discipling Nations and Managing Cities – Principle Based Public Policy by Dennis Peacocke

This teaching by Dennis Peacocke is excerpted from a series on City Action Councils—a precursor to GoStrategic's School of Kingdom Citizenship. Our cities and countries are being managed by someone—the questions is, according to what principles? Many governing bodies are tactical rather than strategic, and pragmatic rather than grounded in sustainable building principles. Given this, what should our dependency on the state be as citizens? How can we mobilize principled policy changers and effectively engage the challenges of our public systems? This teaching explores these questions and more, offering a vision for believers to restore the elders to the gates. For more on the 12 Master Principles visithttps://www.gostrategic.org/12-master-principles/ For more on the series Tending Your Garden visit https://www.gostrategic.org/product/tending-garden-mp3/ For more on the School of Kingdom Citizenship visit https://schoolofkingdomcitizenship.com/ For more on the ministry of GoStrategic visit Latest - GoStrategic

Christians are increasingly criticized for their opinions in the public square and often labeled as Christian nationalists. But should this criticism cause us to retract our opinions and retreat? Or is Christian cultural engagement exactly what our nations need?  We are called to faithfully reflect Christ not only in our personal lives, but everywhere–in our families, churches, workplaces, and yes, truth must even influence politics, and our work in public institutions and culture. Our guests, Dennis Peacocke and Katherine Gallagher from our affiliate organization, GoStrategic, help us consider strategies and practical ways that we can meaningfully engage in these areas for Christ, and for the nations.View the transcript, leave comments, and check out recommended resources on the Episode Landing Page!Disciple Nations Alliance Website

This week, we're joined by Wish Ronquillo Peacocke, author of “A Fraction of Momentary Love” (link below) and host of the Human Thesaurus podcast. We talk about the etymology of food, why it's important to call things what they are, and how even across oceans people are still excited to buy gluten-free water. Also, we decide that a food revolution is coming, bolstered by people like you who are learning more and more every day about where their food comes from, how to cook it, and how to eat it. We answer the question on everyone's mind: “what is plant-based rice?” I speak briefly on the importance of trust between a creator and their community. Finally, we discuss Wish's book of poetry, and how the best way to eat is to nourish your soul. It's bonus episode time, ya huh we're dropping an extra episode this week, which is why we're sitting here awaiting your listening pleasure on a Tuesday! I know right, so exciting, anyway this naturally means that Em will be back, as per usual, on Thursday for an amazing little chat with Melissa Leong from Masterchef. Today though it's all about giving Em's high school bestie, Michael Lucas a chance to get his chat on with one of his friends and coworkers, Stephen Peacocke. Stephen came to prominence for Aussie viewersplaying a local river boy called Brax on the TV soap ‘Home and Away'. Michael knows him better from playing the characters he created for his own shows, like tradie Ben on the drama series ‘Five Bedrooms' and as the ex AFL player turned sport reporter, Rob Rickards on Michael's award winning series ‘The Newsreader'. Stephen is an actual unicorn according to Michael and his costar Kat Stewart, you'll find out why plus hear more about how he got to where he is now. You'll also get to hear Michael reveal his theory on why he's still so down to earth, even though he's won multiple Logies and appeared in major Hollywood movies. There's even some behind the scenes goss from the forthcoming season of ‘Five Bedrooms'. So find your favourite chill out zone and prepare to get to know the man behind some of Australian TV's favourite knockabout blokes. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A basic question in mind and metaphysics is the relation between the nature of mental content (or meaning) and the nature of the domains of entities and relations to which those contents refer or which they are about. Does an explanation of this relation require us to give meaning priority, or instead is the metaphysics of the domain always involved in explaining the content? In his new book, The Primacy of Metaphysics (Oxford University Press, 2019), Christopher Peacocke argues for the idea that the metaphysics of the domain must always be involved – that one must always draw on facts about metaphysics to explain meaning but not vice versa. Peacocke, who is Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, applies his general thesis to various specific domains, such as temporal phenomena and the self, and considers how it bears on such further issues as the integration of metaphysics and epistemology and the limits of intelligibility. In this week's message, Pastor Adam Peacocke reminds us that we are called to dream crazy big dreams! And to engage with a God who is crazy-big with love, compassion and mercy. In order to be a source of life and good in our communities, we have to be interruptible. We must make time and be of service to those in need. Every day, there is an opportunity to serve, if we are willing. If we live out the values and love that God has placed on our hearts, our churches will be on-ramps of blessings into the world.

Realism about Measurement and Realism about Magnitudes

MCMP – Metaphysics and Philosophy of Language

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2015 57:04

Johanna Wolff (Hong Kong) gives a talk at the MCMP Colloquium (8 July, 2015) titled "Realism about Measurement and Realism about Magnitudes". Abstract: A realist about measurement, roughly speaking, holds that measurements give us information about, or epistemic access to, the way the world is. Measurement, on such an account, is objective. A realist about magnitudes, understood either as properties or relations, holds that the way measurements provide such objective knowledge is by tracking features of the world, namely certain quantitative properties or relations. Does realism about measurement require realism about magnitudes, or can we be realists about measurement without any additional commitment to magnitudes? Operationalists (Bridgman 1927, Stevens 1935) and nominalists (Field 1980) have traditionally held that it is possible to be a realist about measurement without being a realist about magnitudes. Realism about measurement without realism about magnitudes also seems to be promoted by Representationalism about measurement (Krantz et. al. 1971-90). Against these attempts to divorce realism about measurement from realism about magnitudes, Mundy (1987), Swoyer (1989), and more recently Peacocke (forthcoming) have argued that realism about measurement, while conceptually distinct from realism about magnitudes, nonetheless requires a commitment to magnitudes. My primary question in this paper is how exactly we should understand realism about measurement and realism about magnitudes respectively. A secondary aim will be to see how traditional arguments in favour of realism about magnitudes fare, depending on how we understand these two realisms.
