It was a dramatic, spectacular weekend of action in both Las Vegas and Alburquerque, New Mexico as Vergil Oritz and Angeleo Leo emerged victorious in main events. We have more on that, some fight news and some Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker nostalgia, as well, are part of the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap Podcast!"Host T.J. Rives returns with Insider Dan Rafael of his Fight Freaks Unite substack/newsletter and BigFightWeekend.com to cover it all.Was Ortiz's narrow decision win over Serhii Bohachuck in a 12 round slugfest in the Golden Boy main event one of the fights of the year? It certainly looks like it, as Dan has more on how Vergil got off the ground not once but twice and still won. And, what happens for him next at 154 lb. now that he's the interim WBC champ? Then, we get to Leo's KO of Luis Alberto Lopez in the Top Rank/ESPN main event in Leo's hometown in New Mexico. HIs devastating left hook KO of the IBF featherweight champ, certainly has to be considered for knockout of the year, as Lopez remained motionless on the ground for several seconds and was counted out. Dan gives his perspective and what's next for Leo at 126 lb. too? There's fight news on a couple of all time names in Nonito Donaire and Chocolatito Gonzalez who may be looking to fight each other later this year. Both have hall of fame careers and if they want to fight on, probably should look to battling each other at this aged, stage. We finish with some Pernell Whitaker nearly 35 year old anniversary nostalgia on a first round KO in an HBO main event that made him undisputed at 135 lb. but the card also featured two other great names in Hector Camacho and Meldrick Taylor, too. And, a heavweight showdown that he attended in 2006 where Oleg Maskaev scored a dramatic KO12 of Hasim Rahman to become the WBC heavyweight champ and it became the first time ever in the four betlt era that four non-Americans now had portions of the heavyweight title. He was there and reminisces about it.It's all part of the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap Podcast" as part of the Big Fight Weekend Podcast feed. Promoter Lou DiBella is one of the most outspoken men in the sport. In his former role at HBO, he worked with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Lennox Lewis and Pernell Whitaker and as a promoter he's been with Bernard Hopkins, Micky Ward, Sergio Martinez and many others. He lost a brother to suicide, rescues animals (including a zebra!), was this week inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and here also discusses his relationship with the likes of Eddie Hearn and Al Haymon. Lou's induction has caused him to be reflective in recent weeks, thinking about the best and worst the sport has to offer, while remaining positive that it is, overall, a force for good.
Today, Josh and Fares share some of their all time favorite boxing knockouts from any decade!
Today we go into boxing and rewatch Chavez vs Whitaker while having a pale ale from Deschutes called Mirror Pond.
When you think Pernell Whitaker, you generally think defense, not brutal, late-rounds knockouts. But against Diosbelys Hurtado in 1997, that's what we got. Faced with getting a big fight with Oscar de la Hoya, Whitaker, for some reason, took on Hurtado on HBO. After trailing on all three cards through 10 tedious and foul-filled rounds, Whitaker knew what he needed to do and did it. Remembering Joao Gilberto, Pernell Whitaker, Fernando Cortado, Pumpsie Green Joao Gilberto was the Brazilian guitarist and songwriter who was a key figure in bringing the bossa nova style of music to the United States in the early 1960’s. He is best known for the song “The Girl From Ipanema” which he sang in Portuguese and his then-wife Astrid sang in English. Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker was the boxing great who won the world title in four divisions. He was especially adept as a quick, defensive boxer. Fernando Cortado was American computer scientist who developed the time-sharing operating system so that computer time could be divided among many users. Pumpsie Green was the first African-American player to play for the Boston Red Sox, the last major league team to integrate.

Incredibly, despite solid media coverage even as an amateur, Pernell Whitaker was overlooked relative to his ability and accomplishments throughout his career. It really wasn't until later on, after he was forced to retire as his body broke down, that he got the love and attention he deserved from the start. Now that Whitaker is gone, it's forcing boxing fans and pundits to reexamine how great he was. My guest on this podcast is top trainer and 2019 IBHOF inductee James "Buddy" McGirt. We discussed Buddy's recent work in the corner of WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Sergey Kovalev, as well as young prospect and 2016 Olympian Janibek Alimkhanuly. We also discussed Buddy's HOF career and legendary fights with Frankie Warren, Saoul Mamby, Howard Davis, Meldrick Taylor, Simon Brown and Pernell Whitaker. We talked about his notorious management team Al Certo and Stuart Weiner. We then got into his adjustment to retiring from the ring and his becoming a trainer of champions such as Arturo Gatti, Antonio Tarver and Vernon Forrest. It was a really great conversation - enjoy!
Dubbed “The Boy Wonder,” the 22-year old promoted his first bout on Sept. 30, 1969, featuring Bennie Briscoe in the main event at the Blue Horizon. Since then, Peltz has become one of boxing’s most consistent promoters and is synonymous with Philadelphia boxing and, in particular, the Blue Horizon, where he promoted bouts for 32 years. Peltz also served as Director of Boxing at the Philadelphia Spectrum from 1973 to 1980. The crowd of 16,019 for the WBC junior lightweight title fight at The Spectrum in l976 set the record for the largest crowd ever to watch boxing indoors in Pennsylvania history, while the 14,930 who saw Briscoe vs. Hagler in 1978 is the largest crowd indoors for a non-world championship contest. Peltz has promoted cards at many other Philadelphia venues, including the old 7,000-seat Arena at 46th & Market Street, the Arts Palace at Broad & Pine Streets, as well as the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia, his current home. In addition to Philadelphia, Peltz has promoted boxing matches at nearly every casino in Atlantic City. Among the fighters who boxed on Peltz-promoted cards include Bobby “Boogaloo” Watts, Eugene “Cyclone” Hart, Willie “The Worm” Monroe, Stanley “Kitten” Hayward, Marvin Johnson, Alfredo Escalera, Mike Rossman, Billy "Dynamite" Douglas, Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver as well as Hall-of-Famers Jeff Chandler, Bobby Chacon, Orlando Canizales, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, George Benton, Emile Griffith, Michael Spinks, Thomas Hearns, Aaron Pryor, Pernell Whitaker, Roberto Duran and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Peltz was honored with the James J. Walker Award for “Long and Meritorious Service to Boxing” by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 1999. Noted for his ingenuity for making great matches, Peltz follows in the great tradition of Philadelphia boxing promoter Herman Taylor. In addition to promoting, Peltz is an avid boxing historian and archivist.
