See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In 2010, the long-time passion project of Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter, came to life. Covering the lives of professional boxers and half-brothers Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund, The Fighter was directed by David O. Russell, and stars Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Melissa Leo. Made for $25M, The Fighter pulled in $130M in the box office, and this flick covers a lot of ground, like family squabbles, picking up bartenders, Massachusetts accents, crack addiction, and oh yeah, boxing. But does it hold up? Listen as Jon, Colin, and guest host Dave discuss subtitled movies, the pride of Lowell, and caricatures of characters as we see if The Fighter can box its way out of a wet paper bag, or if it smokes too much crack and goes down jumping out of a window to be confronted by our Moms.

Today's episode is about an Italian–Canadian professional boxer who competed from 1991 to 2007. He was a World champion in two weight classes, Gatti held the IBF junior lightweight title from 1995 to 1998, and the WBC super lightweight title from 2004 to 2005. He also participated in The Ring magazine's Fight of the Year a total of four times (1997, 1998, 2002, and 2003). Gatti was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on December 10, 2012 in his first year of eligibility, becoming the tenth Canadian boxer to be so inducted. Gatti was famously known for his trilogy fights with Micky Ward, specially the 1st and the 3rd fight which got put part of HBO's 10 best fights of the decade also I highly recommend you to go and watch them fights as they are really the definition of warriors going at it. Furthermore, Gatti Death came as shock to many as he was only 37 years old and it came with a lot of mystery and confusion with his wife first being arrested for homicide and then released after an autopsy done in Brazil ruled his death was suicide, however there was a lot of claims by friends, family that Gatti would never commit suicide and that the wife of Gatti was guilty of murder as her motive was Gatti's fortune, which Rodrigues inherited since she was able to coerce Gatti to void their prenup agreement three weeks prior to his death.

In this podcast Dan tries his darndest to help Kevin, a man who has somehow never seen a movie, understand what a movie is.Today: The Fighter (2010)
Hang on, man, two consecutive boxing flicks? Yeah, why not. The Fighter is 10 years old and it was heaped with plenty of critical & financial kudos back then. Does it still deserve those raves? Well, one of us was more enthusiastic about David O. Russell's Raging Bull-esque hit than the other. Russell works with his frequent leading man Mark Wahlberg again as Marky Mark lives in the skin of real-life pugilist Micky Ward. Wahlberg, for good or bad, has to play second fiddle in his own movie because Christian Bale and Melissa Leo (oh, and those sisters!) take over completely. Scenery? Oh, it's chewed. Bale certainly does a tremendous job of portraying a drug addict and former star boxer cum trainer. He is, as always, a remarkably committed actor and this is HIS film. And that's how Dicky Eklund would want it. So if you're in the mood to hear about an authentic boxing picture (complete with a sexualized Amy Adams), the 58th episode of Scoring At The Movies is your welterweight champion of the world. Our website is scoringatthemovies.podbean.com Irish up your tweets and send some of them our way: @moviefiend51 and @scoringatmovies In 2 weeks, we'll cover a "football" movie in preparation for the NFL season, The Last Boy Scout

The Gatti-Ward trilogy, fought from May of 2002 to June of the following year, really did have everything: broken bones, a busted eardrum, a “Round of The Century,” relentless trading and constantly switching momentums, blood and plenty of guts and, after it was all over, respect – with respect between the two fighters being huge and respect from the entire boxing world dutifully pouring in.
Micky Ward! The Fighting Pride of Lowell is joining Woodsy on today's podcast. Micky gives us a bit of what he went through in the legendary Gatti-Ward fights and then shares his thoughts on the sport of boxing today. Jerry Capobianco is the head trainer to Joe Smith and is next on the pod. He talks possible opponents for his fighter and tries to make sense of the championship title picture at the Light Heavyweight division. Psychiatrist and Doctor, Johnny Lops, closes the show. Him and Woodsy talk white collar boxing and the preparation, aftermath, and conclusion of his journey into the ring.
Fridays with Forrester...Drew (DrewsMorningDish.com) is here, we discuss how Hall Of Fame voting could be altered, how far the Ravens should to go keep Matt Judon and much more-including some wild #FinishThis scenarios. And we wrapped the show by chatting with the legendary Micky Ward about how he's trying to combat CTE, reflections on his iconic trilogy with Arturo Gotti and why he loves Baltimore's own Gervonta Davis.

Ward and interviewer Tris Dixon go back nearly two decades and they discuss Micky's storied career, the epic fights with the likes of Reggie Green, Shea Neary, Emanuel Augustus and Gatti, how he rejuvenated his career and much more. They also talk about Ward's CTE diagnosis, a neurodegenerative condition he has from fighting, and much more besides as they meet up in Ward's Lowell home.

While reading about the New England Golden Gloves tournament held every year in Lowell, Mass., (the home of "Irish" Micky Ward) our host discovers a true character Harold Reitman, M.D. Dr. Reitman won the heavyweight division of this tournament in the early 1970s but turned down a pro boxing contract to instead finish medical school in Boston. Amazingly, "Hurricane" Peter McNeeley would fight Dr. Reitman in 1995 just two bouts after mixing it up with Mike Tyson. While discussing Dr. Reitman's unique life and journey we also learn about some of the legends of the New England Golden Gloves tournament including Micky Ward, Dickey Eklund and the late, great Ralph Lally.

“Irish” Micky Ward (born October 4, 1965) is a retired junior welterweight professional boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts. Micky is regarded as a working class hero, a blue-collar athlete who has overcome many difficulties in life and prevailed through determination and hard work. Ward won three New England Golden Gloves titles as an amateur before turning pro in 1985. He started off 14-0 in his professional career. Ward was known for his devastating left hook to the body and his ability to withstand punishment while waiting to land his trademark shot. A perennial underdog, he has been known to suddenly drop his opponent in the late rounds with a single shot to the body as he did against Emanuel Burton. After a 15-year pro career, the veteran Ward gained widespread fame in his May 18, 2002 fight with Arturo Gatti, broadcast live on HBO. In 2001, Ward´s battle with Emanuel Burton on July 13 had been named the Ring Magazine Fight of the Year and it served to set up the much-anticipated Ward-Gatti matchup. Ward-Gatti I saw both fighters withstand an amazing amount of punishment through 10 rounds of non-stop action. Ward, who dropped Gatti in the ninth round with a vicious left hook to the body, won the fight by majority decision.Ward-Gatti I was hailed as the “Fight of the Century” by boxing fans and writers, and Round 9 of that bout was called “The Round of the Century” by Emanuel Steward, who co-hosted the fight live on HBO. Ring Magazine named Ward-Gatti I the Fight of the Year for 2002. In their rematch, Gatti neutralized Ward´s body punching power by boxing and staying low. In the third round, Gatti knocked Ward to the canvas with a thundering overhand right which landed on Ward´s ear. Ward sprawled into the turnbuckle and stayed down for the mandatory 8 count. Nobody, especially Gatti (who after the fight called it “the hardest punch I´ve ever landed”) expected Ward to get up, never mind finish the fight. Commentators noted that if it had been any other fighter than Ward, the referee would have stopped the fight in the third round. Ward and Gatti had a third fight, on June 7, 2003. Despite dropping Gatti in round six, Ward lost by a ten round unanimous decision. Ward-Gatti 3 was named Fight of the Year for 2003 by Ring Magazine, which meant that Ward had earned that honor three times. Before his final fight with Gatti, Ward had announced his plans to retire after the fight. Micky captured both the WBU Intercontinental Light Welterweight title and the WBU Light Welterweight title. He also won the respect and admiration of many fans worldwide. The song “The Warrior´s Code” by the punk rock band Dropkick Murphys is dedicated to Micky Ward, and his photograph appears on the cover of the album. Ward´s life is chronicled in a biography by Bob Halloran entitled Irish Thunder: The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward. Micky Ward´s trilogy with Arturo Gatti would become the cover of the video game Fight Night Round 3, on the PlayStation 2 and XBOX versions of the game. And to top it all off The movie “The Fighter” staring Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward and Christian Bale as his half-brother, Dickie Eklund recounts Ward´s climb to fame.

A statue of Rocky Balboa looms over most people’s visions of boxing and boxing films alike, but that hasn’t stopped contemporary filmmakers from mining the gritty world of professional pugilism for its comeback stories and unlikely heroes. On this week’s show, we watched three such films, starting with "Chuck," the new biographical film about Chuck Wepner, the club fighter who largely inspired the Rocky story when he lasted 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali in 1975. "Chuck" director Philippe Falardeau guests on the program, talking with Chance about Wepner’s rare comedic and charming persona in the world of boxing and what it was like to cast for iconic figures like Stallone and Ali. At the 30-minute mark, Chance and Noah meet the 2016 film "Bleed For This" at the center of the ring to discuss the vanity and traditionalism that goes into making a stock Hollywood boxing drama. At the 43-minute mark, they reappraise 2010’s "The Fighter" and have somewhat different thoughts on the merits of David O. Russell’s shifty Micky Ward biopic. Ready? Touch gloves.

Boxing's best radio show is back at it!!! Tonight we welcome some of the best fighters from Ireland and of Irish blood. First up, American Irishman and boxing icon "IRISH" MICKY WARD stops by to talk boxing with the crew and find out what he's up to. 2-time world champion & boxing legend STEVE COLLINS returns to the show to update us about his pending return fight against Roy Jones Jr. Former Commonwealth & Prizefighter championMARTIN ROGAN joins the gang to talk his career and what's next for "Big Rogie" Middleweight contender ANDY LEE gives us his time just two days before his wedding to talk boxing and what's in store for him in the future. Former world champion and Irish boxing legend "POCKET ROCKET" WAYNE MCCULLOUGH stops by to talk boxing and give an update on what he's been up to these days.
First up, fresh off the “Monday Night Football” scare the Texans put into his Ravens, Baltimore's future Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed joins us. And he joins us from a very interesting place, too. Keep your ears peeled for that as we discuss the difficulty Baltimore's secondary and defense endured in the latter throes of the game in Houston. We ask Ed if that's yet another instance of a disturbing trend for the Ravens or if he thinks the issues are fixable. We also talk about our times hanging at the Pro Bowl together and one of the funniest stories you'll ever hear that involves his former teammate at the “U” in Miami, fellow Pro Bowler Reggie Wayne. Then, we dial up multiple Grammy Award winning R&B/soul maestro John Legend. Legend's newest album “Wake Up,” a collaboration with The Roots – Jimmy Fallon's “house” band — is as good as anything he's ever done. We talk about the album, which has generated five MORE Grammy nominations for John, before turning to his fantasy football team and his real-life football team – the Bengals.Yes, Legend is an Ohio-native, which means he's also an Ohio State Buckeye fan. We have fun with that, what with the way I bleed Maize and Blue.Last, but certainly not least, Mark Wahlberg joins the podcast on the very day his movie “The Fighter” earned six Golden Globe nominations (including one for Wahlberg for Best Actor in a Drama) and his new genius show on HBO, “Boardwalk Empire,” earned a nomination for Best Drama Series. In other words, the only thing more on fire than Wahlberg is his beloved New England Patriots, fresh off yet another stunning beat-down of a nine-win team hoping to earn its stripes by beating them. We talk about it all with Wahlberg, who, before playing fighter Micky Ward in “The Fighter” was also Vince Papale in “Invincible.” I make a suggestion as to who Wahlberg should play next if he cares to make one last sports-related biopic. We also delve into the crucial topic of whether or not there will be an “Entourage” movie once that critically-acclaimed show of his signs off of HBO next year.In between all of those interviews, The Worm returns to the podcast fresh off his bye week. Senior Producer Jason Wormser is joined by NFL Network reporter Kara Henderson in two different Hot Topics segments in which, trust me, we hit absolutely everything under the sun. It's all to the good, as they say. I'm just trying to sound cool for Legend. Hope it works. You tell me. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
