We had an incredibly honest (and fun) conversation with Canada's Sweetheart and friend, Cheryl Hickey, host of Entertainment Tonight Canada. Cheryl received more no's than yeses on the road to becoming who she is today and shares the realization that what you put out is what you get back. A lesson her mom taught her a long time ago. A valuable takeaway in an industry that, in the beginning, can be competitive and messy. Cheryl has interviewed powerful celebrities in Hollywood including Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Swift, Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey. She works closely with Toronto's SickKids Foundation and with Plan International Canada, an organization dedicated to advancing children's rights and equality for girls in over 75 countries across the globe. It's interesting to note that one of the things preventing accelerated giving in North America is the retention of talent. Donors have said that the reason why they are no longer able to give donations is that their contacts in organizations keep changing. This poses a threat to the fundraising activities of organizations which is why Aaron Sanderson says that it is crucial for team members to build rapport with donors not for themselves but for their specific organization. He says that cultivating these relationships should be the main priority of fundraising leaders, the question is, how do they motivate their team members to do this? And more importantly, how do they encourage talent retention in their organization? Aaron Sanderson is the Vice President of Philanthropy at Plan International Canada. He is an international award-winning fundraiser with over 13 years of experience at leading not-for-profit organizations like War Child Canada, SickKids Foundation, and BC Children's Hospital Foundation. He also has over 8 years of senior volunteer experience with not-for-profit boards and committees including AFP Toronto, Habitat for Humanity, the Arthritis Society, Heritage Toronto, and the University of British Columbia. On this episode of the Philanthropy212 podcast, Penny talks with Aaron Sanderson about leadership development for fundraisers, the challenges posed by the new generation of fundraisers, the importance of emphasizing the need to build connections for the organization, and why checking in on team members is crucial in retaining talent.

At least here at home, we see girls picking up academic awards on assembly days at schools and we know that for years, women have been out-graduating men from university. Yet, conversely, there's still a wide wage gap and under representation of women in executive and other leadership roles. It turns out that something critical happens to the confidence of girls and women as they pass through their teens and into early adulthood. My guest for this episode is Caroline Riseboro, president and CEO of Plan International Canada, a non-profit organization whose work on behalf of children's rights and equality for girls is well known to many of us. Plan International Canada recently did a survey on confidence in girls in women and the results are startling. We talk about what societal shifts need to happen to address gender equality and how parents can help prepare their daughters for some of what they will encounter in the world. Guest host Mary Otto, President of Local 43, and member of NSGEU's Political Action Committee interviews Erin Casey and Joan Helson about a campaign called Dignity. Period. From a blog written by Erin Casey: "One-third of Canadian women under the age of 25 say they've struggled to afford menstrual products (Plan International Canada, 2018). One in seven girls in Canada have either left school early or missed school entirely because they don't have what they need to manage their periods (Always Confidence and Puberty Study, 2018). Nova Scotia is the province with the highest rate of food insecurity in Canada. When people with periods can't afford food, they can't afford other necessities. They likely have to choose between groceries and period products, often putting their children's needs ahead of their own. Dignity. Period. is a campaign to help people with periods in Nova Scotia access the menstrual hygiene supplies they need to thrive—to live safely and with dignity. We're inviting people across the province to host Pad Parties and collect donations of period products for Feed Nova Scotia to distribute to their 145 member food banks, meal programs, and shelters." https://www.feednovascotia.ca/blog/dignity-period To like Dignity.Period Halifax Facebook page, visit: https://www.facebook.com/DignityPeriodCampaign/ For a transcript of the podcast, please visit our website: http://nsgeu.ca/nsgeu-union-matters-e7-dignity-period/

Do your fundraising programs jump from solicitation of smaller annual gifts to large multi-year commitments? If you said yes, you're not alone! A relatively new focus in fundraising, many organizations are eager to unlock the capacity of that ‘missing middle' by implementing mid-level giving programs. But, as we hear from our guests, Amanda Hatt, Director, Annual Programs at the QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation and Ainsley Dowle, Senior Manager Philanthropy at Plan International Canada, it's not just a matter of amplifying strategies used for lower level giving or scaling how major gifts fundraising is done. Rather, it's about creating a new way of engaging with donors that builds a closer relationship but still respects where they are at. Listen as they share their insights born from growing their mid-level giving programs. And finally, look to the future of mid-level giving with KCI Senior Vice President Celeste Bannon Waterman who shares how artificial intelligence will play a role in these types of programs.
