REPLAY - Some of our recent popular episodes to get ready for the new season of Nirvana Sisters... In this episode of the Nirvana Sisters Podcast, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Elizabeth Poyner, a gynecological oncologist and expert in midlife women's health. Dr. Poyner shared her extensive knowledge on the intersection of hormonal health, stress management, and overall well-being for women, particularly during midlife. We kicked off the conversation by discussing our personal "nirvana" moments of the week, highlighting the joy of seasonal changes and family milestones. Dr. Poyner then delved into her journey from specializing in cancer surgery to focusing on midlife women's health, emphasizing the importance of understanding how stress impacts our bodies and the role of hormones in managing that stress. A significant portion of our discussion centered around adrenal fatigue and HPA axis dysregulation, with Dr. Poyner clarifying the differences between adrenal fatigue and adrenal insufficiency. She explained how chronic stress can lead to dysregulated cortisol production, affecting our overall health. We also explored the importance of androgens, particularly testosterone and DHEA, in women's health. Dr. Poyner highlighted the benefits of these hormones for mood, cognitive function, and overall vitality, while also discussing the various methods of hormone delivery, including creams and troches. As we moved into the topic of brain health, Dr. Poyner shared alarming statistics about women's risk of dementia and the protective role of estrogen. She emphasized the importance of starting hormone replacement therapy early in the menopause transition to potentially reduce dementia risk. Finally, we wrapped up the episode with Dr. Poyner's recommendations for supplements that can support midlife health, including vitamin D, omega-3s, and magnesium, and the significance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise and community engagement. This episode was packed with valuable insights and practical advice for women navigating midlife health challenges. We hope our listeners find this information empowering as they strive for their own nirvana in health and well-being. Karly is a Ph.D. student and graduate instructer at the University of Memphis. Her research focuses on the intersections of gender, religion, and agency--examining evangelicalism, purity rhetoric, and contemporary purity culture. Mylie is a PhD researcher at Queen's University Belfast--amongst other topics, her research includes the lived experience of women in Northern Ireland and the rhetoric of Christian dating books for young women. Karly says she approaches the topic of purity culture more from a research standpoint, while Mylie says she can provide story and experience based commentary. In this episode we explore the vast, weird world of purity culture--what it is, what messaging we learned about it growing up in the church, and the many different ways it has impacted our faith and sexuality. Heads up--the content warning for this episode is extensive and heavy, due to the sensitive nature of this topic and all its implicationsContent Warning: mentions of incest, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, sexual assault, marital rapeReferences: "Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science That Will Transform Your Sex Life" by Emily Nagoski https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22609341-come-as-you-are?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=T0snlFOmvG&rank=1Follow us for more ✨bad✨ content: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calledtobebad_podcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calledtobebadWebsite: https://calledtobebad.buzzsprout.com/Sponsor of this episode: https://www.arthumorsoul.com/Want to become part of the ✨baddie✨ community? Kris couldn’t think of a better time to bring in the wonderful Dr. Nefertiti Poyner, to talk about resilience and the right protective factors that will serve us through the storms of life. In this episode, Dr. Poyner shares her unique insights for staying resilient in times of crisis and stress, how we can let go of toxic people and patterns in our lives, and advice for directors and leaders to get through the pandemic with a little more grace and sanity.   Key Takeaways: [12:20] Dr. Poyner always wanted to be a teacher and had great role models in her family and throughout her own upbringing. She loved teaching but could have used the knowledge she knows now about socio-emotional health and why some children struggle with balance. [14:30] The Devereux Center for Resilient Children provides assessments and reports for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. They also lead workshops and programs for helping adults learn how to fill their own cup, so they show up in the world with more empathy and compassion for others. [27:16] There is strength in asking for help. [29:13] Fun Fact: Dr. Poyner loves the Golden Girls and definitely would be a Sophia. [30:21] Having empathy for your team doesn’t mean you always have to agree with them. It means you are walking in their shoes because you would want them to do the same. [32:56] Teachers still have to prove all the time that they work hard and that their job and industry should be taken just as seriously as any other profession. [36:44] Protective factors don’t make challenging times go away, but they do buffer our experience. Examples of protective factors include: The Umbrella — one or two close friends that protect us through the rainy days of life. A Sense of Internal Belief About Ourselves — when we like the person we see in the mirror, we are more resilient. Protective Self-Control — we can learn to be vulnerable about our emotional ups and downs, and see that others won’t judge us or think of us as weak.   Quotes: “If you do have to do virtual learning, keep it interesting.” — Nefertiti “Nobody can make you feel any way. You allow that to happen.” — Nefertiti “It takes a healthy village to raise a healthy child.” — Nefertiti “Give yourself permission to waste a little bit of time.” — Nefertiti   Mentioned in This Episode: Kris Murray The Child Care Success Company Child Care Success Academy Child Care Success Summit — offering $1 ticket Grow Your Center Devereux Center for Resilient Children Nataly Kogan Gretchen Rubin

Today I’m talking with Dr. Nefertiti Poyner of the Devereaux Center for Resilient Children and I’m going to to tell you right now, she is an absolute delight.  Educators and the children they love and teach are being stretched in every direction,  Dr. Poyner shares some of the principles that create the “ordinary magic” that helps us all to bounce back.  She shares a fantastic script for building resilience and relationships in the midst of all the frustration that children are feeling as they navigate new restrictions in the classroom and helps us all to remember how to “live today well.”   Find show notes at https://www.notjustcute.com/podcast/episode36

The title of James Poyner’s book, Trump Tweets: His Social Media Phenomenon (Wilkinson Publishing, 2017), tells you everything you need to know about the world you about to enter. In temperament, and style, Trump was unlike any presidential candidate who came before him. The media and the public were enthralled with his antics. However, what stood out for many was Trumps thoroughly unique communication style. This book gives an in-depth look at how Trump used Twitter to attack, criticise, publicise and expand the reach of brand Trump. Poyner uses several key events to move the book forward and tell the story of how Trump used Twitter, from the start of his presidential campaign right up until Inauguration day. Exploring not only Trumps tweets but the publics reaction to them, Poyner is able to capture unique moments in history and examine how they impacted the race to the White House. The term Twitter-storm was coined long before Trump threw his hat into the presidential race but no other figure, since the social media platforms inception, has been able to cause a storm quite like Trump. Poyner leads the reader down the rabbit hole and through a world of tweets, trolling, tantrums and ultimately victory. Trump Tweets is available now in Australia and will be available in the U.S. on June 1. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
