Archiving the Heart: Greg Brown on Music, Family, and Throwing Out Old Notebooks, ep. 266

Iowa folk music icon Greg Brown is living that retired life. After playing his farewell retirement concert in 2023, he's returned with a new book: Ring Around The Moon: A Songbook, which highlights a song selection personally picked by the songwriter himself, as well as family photos, personal anecdotes and self-penned drawings. The book features a foreword by Seth Avett (The Avett Brothers) who calls Brown's songs "plain spoken expression of the nearly inexpressible." In our conversation, we touch on topics like inner peace, happiness, personal growth and self-acceptance.He speaks of how art has impacted him in ways the artist will never understand. He talks about what it's like to be on both the receiving and sending end of this exchange. It especially impacted him when he learned the poet Allen Ginsberg listened to an album of his while he was dying. I asked him about his music archives, which he calls "a bunch of old notebooks on a shelf" and "a couple boxes of old photos," which assisted him in recalling family connections for the songbook. Going through the photos and old songs instilled a sense of music nostalgia, including collaboration with Iowa musicians at the Wednesday Night Jam at The Mill. Music nostalgia surfaces several times through the pages like his incredible story of founding the successful and beloved Red House Records. There's also discussion on a few choice Greg Brown songs like "If You Don't Get it at Home," addressing replacing love for materialism and drug use. We talk about "Brand New '64 Dodge," chronicling Brown's personal experience with JFK's assassination in 1963 and "Two Little Feet," written in Alaska where he was inspired by Native American myths he heard and felt in the area. Greg Brown's songbook was an awesome trip down memory lane for some of the best folk songs ever written from one very serious, yet very silly songwriter. It was an honor to dig in with one of the best to do it!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? It's been ten years since Boston-area Meg Hutchinson has released an album and she did it super quietly, so no shade if you didn't realize that your favorite middle sister is back with some seriously devastating songs. Meg grew up just outside of Great Barrington, MA where she had an idyllic childhood surrounded by woods and framed by her desire to become a folk singer. That dream was realized after she graduated college, quit her organic lettuce farm job and moved to Boston in the early 2000's. There, she wove herself into its vibrant folk community gigging around New England, performing in the subway and getting signed to the prestigious Red House Records, where she released three albums.Throughout her life she has suffered from several mental illness, experiencing her first major bout of depression at age 19. Not understanding, she felt ashamed and hid her illness for nine years. After a huge whirlwind 2006 tour in England where she experienced a high never felt before, Meg came home and felt mania and severe depression all at once. She called her family to help and it was her younger sister, Tessa, who eventually got Meg professional help. After a long road stabilizing and healing, Meg has a grasp on her bi-polar disorder, which she calls by its former name: manic depression. She's discovered her calling as a palliative care hospital chaplain and hospice worker. She's no longer working music. She's playing music and that's how she approached this new album: All The Wonder All The Beauty, an album she says “is about things we don't want to talk about.” She writes about her mental illness, midlife and death. This is an intense discussion with one of my favorite people! I'm so happy she's released this album and excited for you to get to know Meg Hutchinson.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week The Show On The Road features living folk-blues legend and underground guitar icon David Bromberg. Host Z. Lupetin got to speak with the now 74-year-old Bromberg in a hotel room before the pandemic shutdown prior to Bromberg playing a show at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles back in February, 2020. Coming out of the fertile Greenwich Village scene on the heels of Bob Dylan, Ramblin Jack Elliot and other shaggy troubadour-storytellers, Bromberg's encyclopedic knowledge of American songwriting traditions made him a coffee-house wunderkind who refused to be pigeonholed in one genre. By the age of thirty, Bromberg was the go-to guitarist for Dylan, Willie Nelson, John Prine and Ringo Starr, and he could be found jamming at dinner parties with George Harrison. A man of many interests and talents, Bromberg actually stepped away from performing for nearly two decades at the height of his notoriety, moving to Chicago to learn how to build and then appraise violins. He became obsessed with identifying the best instruments just by sight, and even opened a respected instrument shop in Wilmington, Delaware called David Bromberg Fine Violins. He returned after twenty two years off the road with the triumphant and Grammy nominated "Try Me One More Time" in 2006, and has assembled an energetic band of friends that continues to join him on his high energy new offerings. Bromberg's muscular and ever genre-bending 2020 release “Big Road” pays homage to his heroes like Charlie Rich and 1930's bluesman Tommy Johnson, but also injects heavy doses of swampy rock, horn-heavy funk, and good-humored folk storytelling along the way. Stick around to the end of the episode to hear him play a new acoustic tune called “Buddy Brown's Blues”.

ROB ICKES AND TREY HENSLEY are a powerhouse acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene. Rob is a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Dobro Player of the Year and Trey a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy who made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11. White-hot picking and stone country vocals are still the driving force of the duo, but now with added grit and a nod to the rootsier side of Americana. Their new Compass Records album is ‘World Full of Blues’. LARRY CAMPBELL & TERESA WILLIAMS have been called “The First Couple of Americana” (Mojo). Multi-instrumentalist-singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams’ acclaimed eponymous 2015 debut, released after seven years of playing in Levon Helm’s band – and frequent guesting with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Phil Lesh, Little Feat, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady, brought to the stage the crackling creative energy of a decades-long offstage union. A whirlwind of touring and promo followed, and when the dust cleared, the duo was ready to do it all again on ‘Contraband Love’, their new album on Red House Records and a riskier slice of Americana. WoodSongs Kid: Duncan Stiit is a fifteen-year-old award-winning dobro player from Knoxville, Tennessee.

DAVINA AND THE VAGABONDS shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger and dark theatrical moments. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and even Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice. Sowers is a true original. ‘Sugar Drops’ is her first album on Red House Records and marks the first time this Minneapolis-based artist entered a proper studio to record an album. It’s a distillation of bluesy barroom baritone and bravado, graveyard jazz grooves, and noir-ish confessional lyricism backed by boisterous piano, guitar, and strings, the music actualizes. TURLACH BOYLAN and DAVEY MATHIAS are two masters of traditional Irish music. Turlach Boylan was once cryptically introduced onstage as “a musician’s musician”. He learned his music standing in the Culleybackey kitchen of County Antrim flute master John Kennedy, kickstarting a lifelong pursuit of the elusive musical quality ‘Lift’. Davey Mathias is literally a guitarist’s guitarist. He has often performed with fiddler Randal Bays, himself a highly respected Irish music guitarist. WoodSongs Kid: Hudson MacCready is an twelve-year-old guitar player from Knoxville, Tennessee.

JOHN GORKA is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. After 14 critically acclaimed albums, countless national and international tours, and collaborations with the likes of Nanci Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Ani DiFranco, Lucy Kaplansky, Patty Larkin, and many more, Gorka is now releasing ‘True in Time', a 12 song collection he put together with long time producer, Rob Genadek on Red House Records. THE WAR AND TREATY are the husband & wife duo of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount. The band's blend of roots music, bluegrass, folk, gospel and soul boasts a sound that's both stirring and sensual, driven by joy, determination and an unceasing upward gaze. It's music inspired by darkness and despair that ultimately finds a higher spiritual purpose. It's manifested on the group's latest EP, ‘Down to the River'. WoodSongs Kid: Although only 8-years-old, Ashlyn Smith flat-picks the guitar well beyond her years. Her hometown is Louisville, Kentucky.

From New Jersey, folk legend John Gorka got his start living in a music club's basement and acting as resident MC and sound man. His exposure to folk troubadours inspired him, and before long he was performing his own songs – mostly as an opener for visiting acts. Soon he started traveling to New York City and folk meccas like Texas' Kerrville Folk Festival (where he won the New Folk Award in 1984) and Boston where his stunningly soulful baritone voice and original songwriting began turning heads. In 1987, the Minnesota-based Red House Records caught wind of John's talents and released his first album. He moved to Windham Hill/High Street before returning to his musical roots at Red House.Over the years of his rich career, Gorka has established himself as one of folk music's most respected and beloved singer/songwriters, representing the bridge generation between the Folk Revival and the rise of Americana. Folk Alley caught up with John at the 2017 30A Songwriters Festival where his performances of songs and stories from his long and successful career (plus a beautiful Prince cover) were captured by BeeHive Productions.

NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE have been called the Greatest Cosmic, Psychedelic Country Rock and Roll Band Of The Universe. They began as a spin-off from the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart teamed up with John Dawson and David Nelson. In the next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums, selling over 4 million records. The band recently teamed up with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and released two albums to rave reviews, 'Where I Come From' and '17 Pine Avenue'. CHARLIE PARR is a roots musician like no other today. The Minnesota musician has built a frenzied following of fans around the world with his energetic performances and 12 records. On his 13th album and Red House Records debut, 'Stumpjumper', Charlie showcases his blistering finger-picking as he switches between acoustic guitar, dobro and banjo -- and keening, cut-through-the-crowd vocals that resonate with a conviction that runs deep and true. WoodSongs Kid: Madison Broughton is 12-years-old. This native of London, Kentucky won 1st place at the Mountain Soul Vocal Competition Sevierville, Tennessee earlier this year.

MINTON SPARKS fuses music, poetry, and her intoxicating gift for storytelling to paint word pictures of the rural South that put you square in the middle of the people and the places she knows like the back of her hand. She delivers words in beelines of bluesy rhythm and worries the hooks-and there are hooks-backed solely by the nimble acoustic guitar work of John Jackson, whos perhaps best known for having played with Bob Dylan. Her latest album is 'Gold Digger', captures her and Jackson performing 11 memorable story-songs. DALE WATSON is a country music maverick, a true outlaw carrying on where Waylon Jennings left off. A member of the Austin Music Hall of Fame, he stands alongside Waylon, Willie Nelson, and George Strait as one of the finest country singers and songwriters from the Lone Star State. Dale's current release is 'El Rancho Azul' on Red House Records.

Many people play roots music, but few modern musicians live those roots like Minnesota's Charlie Parr. Recording since the earliest days of the 21st century, Parr's heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don't strive for authenticity: They are authentic. It's the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up without a TV but with his dad's recordings of America's musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. With his long hair, fathertime beard, thrift-store workingman's flannel and jeans, and emphatic, throaty voice, Parr looks and sounds like he would have fit right into Harry Smith's "Anthology of American Folk Music."In July 2015, armed with his 12-string and resonator guitars, Parr stopped by the studios at Beehive Productions in Saranac Lake, New York, to record a few songs and talk to us about about his formative years living and playing music in the legendary West Bank of Minneapolis, Minnesota, making his way to Duluth where he now calls home, and about his Red House Records debut, 'Stumpjumper'.

Folk Alley Sessions

Many people play roots music, but few modern musicians live those roots like Minnesota's Charlie Parr. Recording since the earliest days of the 21st century, Parr's heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don't strive for authenticity: They are authentic. It's the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up without a TV but with his dad's recordings of America's musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. THE PINES rose out of the prairies of the Midwest and are one of the most distinct and powerful indie-rock/Americana groups to hit the national scene in years. Founded by Iowa natives David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey, the band caught the attention of acclaimed indie label Red House Records. The Pines' new album, "Dark So Gold" shows a young band that has fully arrived with a sound and song craft that stands apart on the indie music landscape. THE TRISHAS are 4 girls from Austin. All can sing, play and write songs ... sometimes all at once. None are named Trisha. They first shared a stage in January 2009 and their intention was simply to perform a couple of songs as part of a tribute to Savannah's father, singer-songwriter Kevin Welch. With nearly two solid years' worth of buzz and confidence-building shows and opening for the likes Dwight Yoakam, Raul Malo, Rodney Crowell, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Todd Snider, the band has released their first full-length album, "High, Wide & Handsome." Their musicianship, songwriting and soaring four part harmony shows a band with a sister-like tightness looking to expand their grassroots audience outside of Texas.

JOHN GORKA AND ELIZA GILKYSON are considered two of the best contemporary Singer/songwriters touring today. These longtime friends recently teamed up with Lucy Kaplansky to form the super folk group Red Horse. The trio's self titled debut CD was released last year and it became an instant folk classic and a big hit with fans. JOHN GORKA is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who was raised in New Jersey and came out of New York City's Greenwich Village folk scene that produced such songwriters as Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. His award-winning songs have been recorded and performed by such notable artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith and Mary Black. John has recorded eleven solo albums, six on Red House Records. His latest is So Dark You See. ELIZA GILKYSON is a politically minded, poetically gifted singer-songwriter, who has become one of the most respected musicians in roots, folk and Americana circles. The Grammy-nominated artist was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2006, she was recognized with 3 Austin Music Awards and 4 Folk Alliance Music Awards, one of which was for "Song of the Year" for her tune "Man of God." Her latest solo CD is Roses at the End of Time on Red House Records. BLITZ THE AMBASSADOR may seem like an unusual booking for WoodSongs at first glance. The Ghanaian-born, New York-based composer, and producer unleashes psychedelic Afrobeat colors and triple-time rhymes with a lightning-fast mind, the political boldness of Chuck D, and the sixth groove sense of Fela Kuti. All set to swirls of brass, distorted guitars, and the crackle and pop of old amplifiers. However, for his WoodSongs performance, Blitz will be performing a more intimate, stripped down set. Check out his video for "Remembering The Future" to see this talented artist in action as Michael welcomes the show's first hip hop artist and explores the genre's connection to folk music.

HOT TUNA is founding members of the legacy rock band Jefferson Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. They have just released their first studio record in 20 years "Steady As She Goes" on Red House Records and will be performing on WoodSongs in a special acoustic performance to celebrate the album. From their days playing together as teenagers to their current acoustic and electric blues, probably no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years. The pair began playing together while growing up in the Washington D.C. area. While in The Jefferson Airplane, putting together the soundtrack of the 60s, the pair remained loyal to the blues, jazz, bluegrass, and folk influences of the small clubs and larger venues they had learned from years before. While in San Francisco and even in hotel rooms on the road, they would play together and worked up a set of songs that they would often play at clubs in the Bay Area and while on the road, often after having played a set with the Airplane. This led to a record contract; in fact, they had an album recorded before they decided to name their band Hot Tuna. With it they launched on an odyssey which has itself continued for more than 35 years, always finding new and interesting turns in its path forward. MOUNTAIN HEART is bluegrass super group that has been fearlessly revolutionizing the way acoustic music can be presented and played. The band's name has been synonymous with cutting-edge excellence in acoustic music circles since the group's creation in 1999. Widely known throughout the music industry for continually redefining the boundaries of acoustic music, the band is one of the most highly awarded ensembles ever assembled. Mountain Heart, or members of the band, have either won or been nominated for Grammy's, ACM, CMA, and multiple IBMA Awards. The band is out touring in support of their 7'th album, "That Just Happened", which was released in late 2010 on their own imprint, MH Music Group.
