Michael Johnson, creator of Shockwave Defense, has helped over 100,000 men worldwide get physically fit, overcome limiting beliefs, and take charge of their lives. A criminologist and self-defense specialist, Michael is also a skilled helicopter pilot. In his 30 years of experience, he's noticed one common obstacle: men struggling to embrace their masculinity and overcome limiting beliefs. At the young age of 2, he began his journey as a martial artist and has since become highly skilled in several disciplines. In this episode of The Real ResQ, host Jason Quinn is joined by Martin Lehmann, Danish Air Force Rescue Swimmer from Rescue Squadron 722. Martin shares thrilling accounts of his missions, starting with his first, where he was still in the qualification phase and was hoisted into the bush to retrieve an elderly man. He vividly recalls rescuing two children swept away from shore in a dinghy, and being hoisted onto a burning vessel to save the sailors before it was too late. In the last mission he brings us through, he was hoisted onto a sinking fishing vessel to try and help save it. Martin's bravery and quick thinking in these high-pressure situations are commendable. As a rescue swimmer in the Danish Air Force, he shares his experiences and insights into their search-and-rescue operations. They use the EH101 helicopter, a variant of the Leonardo AW101. The Danish Air Force covers a vast coastline and provides medevacs from various islands to hospitals in Denmark. They also support the police and participate in international missions. Martin emphasizes the importance of taking it slow and maintaining a calm mindset during high-pressure situations. Enjoy! This episode is powered by Vertical HeliCASTS. PART 2BECOMING THE PROTAGONIST. Dr. Joshua Appel recalls his journey to becoming an elite PJ in the Air Force, his path to becoming an ER doctor, his connection to the Murph Challenge, and the incredible rescue of Lone Survivor Marcus Lutrell. About Josh: Appel served active duty from 1994-99 as a pararescue specialist in emergency medical tactics, as well as combat and survival skills, continuing on with the United States Air Force Combat Search and Rescue Squadron as a reservist throughout medical school. The rescue team that recovered the lone survivor, Marcus Luttrell, was led by Appel.Josh and the MURPH (from the Fit at Midlife site): Hero WOD's are usually programmed and set up in gyms, and it is a great opportunity to commemorate these heroes to instill and retell the stories of heroism and sacrifice. Murph was first registered on CrossFit's Main Site on August 18th, 2005. No one can tell when exactly it became a tradition for gyms to program Murph on Memorial Day. But in 2007, Josh Appel, an Air Force pararescue jumper who headed the team that jumped to save LT. Murphy's team, took the concept to his gym, Albany CrossFit, and the rest of the CrossFit community did the same. Ten years later, it's an honorable tradition for gyms to close on Memorial Day, working only Murph as their workout, often accompanied by a barbecue or other community bonding event. #lonesurvivor #murphchallenge #becomingtheprotagonistSupport the show

The following is a 1st hand account from the Pilot of the boldest and most massive air disaster rescue mission ever undertaken by the Canadian military in the High Arctic. Edge of your seat story, and incredibly emotional.Every year, in the cold and darkness of late October, personnel at Canadian Forces Station Alert on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, gather at a cairn near the runway to remember the crew and passengers of Hercules 130322 who lost their lives during a resupply mission to the station. On October 30, 1991, at approximately 4:40 p.m., flight 22 of Operation Boxtop – as the biannual resupply mission is called – was on its final approach to the station from Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. As the CC-130 Hercules from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron, loaded with 3,400 litres of diesel fuel, began its descent, the pilot flying lost sight of the runway. Moments later, radar contact and communication were lost as the aircraft crashed approximately 16 km south of the station. The crew of another CC-130 Hercules, also bound for Alert, saw the fires of the crash and identified the location of Boxtop 22. The crash took the lives of five Canadian Armed Forces members – four died in the crash and one perished before help arrived.Don't forget about our training programs! Capt. Evan Southern is a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) pilot who flies the CH-149 Cormorant search and rescue helicopter, a variant of the Leonardo AW101 (EH101).This episode details the harrowing Search and Rescue (SAR) mission of 15 November 2021, where hundreds of motorists were trapped on a British Columbia highway due to landslides caused by torrential rain. You'll hear how Capt. Southern and his crew -- who are members of 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron located at Canadian Forces Base Comox -- were the first to respond to the call for help. The Squadron ultimately deployed three Cormorant helicopters in different configurations to respond to this particular SAR mission. You'll hear about the Cormorant's capabilities and some of the tactics that SAR pilots use in training and how they apply that to operational missions. The Cormorant crews worked all day to rescue over 300 people, breaking all previous records for people rescued in a singe mission by the type.If that wasn't enough, 442 Squadron also responded to two other SAR missions that day -- one for a vessel in distress, and the other for a small aircraft that was reported to be down. You'll hear about the skill and professionalism at 442 Squadron, whose motto is "That Others May Live".Thanks to Capt. Southern for sharing his first hand account of that day, and thanks to his crew as well because there is no doubt it's a team effort. We commend 442 Squadron for the work they do year-round that others may live!Go Bold!

Elliott and Goulding began as radio announcers (Elliott a disc jockey and Goulding a newscaster) in Boston with their own separate programs on station WHDH, and each would visit with the other while on the air. Their informal banter was so appealing that WHDH would call on them, as a team, to fill in when Red Sox baseball broadcasts were rained out. Elliott and Goulding (not yet known as Bob and Ray) would improvise comedy routines all afternoon, and joke around with studio musicians.Elliott and Goulding's brand of humor caught on, and WHDH gave them their own weekday show in 1946. Matinee with Bob and Ray was originally a 15-minute show, soon expanding to half an hour. (When explaining why Bob was billed first, Goulding claimed that it was because Matinee with Bob and Ray sounded better than Matinob with Ray and Bob.) Their trademark sign-off was "This is Ray Goulding reminding you to write if you get work"; "Bob Elliott reminding you to hang by your thumbs."

World War 2 was a lot of things. "Fun" is not one of them. Rescue missions were commonplace, extremely dangerous, and rarely successful. Still, the 4th Rescue Squadron alone saved over 500 lives, and Chris has put together a hybrid film/documentary chronicling their experience. If you're wondering what that means, it means it's a documentary when it can be and a scripted film when it can't. For example, it's very difficult to shoot footage of a battle that happened almost 80 years ago. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
