Chris Nicholson joins me to discuss the military and political situation surrounding Taiwan. We talk about the two ways China can try to take control of the island: a direct invasion or blockade. Chris believes that a direct invasion would be too costly. However, China does seem to have the potential to cut Taiwan off from the rest of the world with its navy. Furthermore, its collection of intermediate-range ballistic missiles gives it the ability to inflict serious harm on the American navy, should the US choose to get involved. US submarines remain a large advantage, but everything else is potentially vulnerable. Moreover, China's naval advantage is increasing over time.We also talk about why we should care about Taiwan in the first place. Chris explains the semiconductor issue, why it's important, and the latest moves by the Biden administration to shut down Chinese progress in this area. I present my theories about what China is doing with regards to Zero Covid. I argue that there are three main possibilities: 1) the government discovered a new method of social control and wants to hold on to it; 2) this is all about pride in the success of its system; and 3) they actually think it's a good policy. We discuss the implications of what sticking to Zero Covid could mean for the future of Chinese growth and military power. Click here for a video and the transcript of the conversation. In the video, you can see us reference a map and pull up other useful things from the internet as we talk. I first met Fred Wickham at the old Coda venue here in Kansas City as the lead guitar player for Country Band The Naughty Pines. I subsequently learned of and became a fan of his band Hadacol and now the Fred Wickham Caravan. Hadacol was around in the late 90s and early 2000s with Wickham, bassist Richard Burgess along with Wickham's brother Greg. They recorded two critically acclaimed albums and toured extensively across the nation. The music critic writing for Salon Magazine once called the band's brand of country “so tough they don't have to prove it.” An attorney by day, Fred has never abandoned his role as a generative/working musician in the Heartland. The Fred Wickham Caravan now blends country, soul and rock and roll into a sound that fits nicely under the Americana umbrella. Comprised of some of Kansas City's finest roots musicians, the Caravan originally formed to support Wickham's 2017 solo release Mariosa Delta. Produced and recorded by the late, great Lou Whitney in Springfield, Missouri, the album received widespread critical acclaim both nationally and abroad. No Depression called Mariosa Delta “a sparkling gem of an album…a great record, part document, part tragedy, all heartbreak,” while PopMatters said the album was “reminiscent of rambling folk and country legends like Dylan and Cash.” For the Caravan record recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Town without Soul, Wickham and Burgess have recruited some of their favorite musicians and best friends to form a six-piece band capable of jumping from one musical style to the next while maintaining a sound that is all their own. Guitar legend Marco Pascolini lends his unmistakable stylings on electric and pedal steel guitar. Cowboy Bart Colliver, Kansas City's most soulful keyboardist, adds accordion and great harmony vocals. Matt Brahl, one of KC's finest drummers and an old friend who actually played with Wickham and Burgess during the final days of Hadacol, jumped right in after original drummer Sam Platt departed. Rounding out the ensemble is Wickham's son, Fred Jr., who had become an accomplished mandolin player while no one was watching.

Anya Burgess, owner of Sola Violins, a full-service violin shop in downtown Lafayette, Louisiana joined Jan Swift of Discover Lafayette to discuss her journey and career in music. Anya moved to Acadiana in 2000 as a Teach for America instructor. Growing up in Winchester, Massachusetts, she knew very little about our region. But her desire to "land somewhere different" led her to teach at Washington Elementary School in St. Landry Parish, and she has remained here ever since. Growing up playing classical music, she was exposed to more traditional Appalachian and Irish music when she studied folklore at Indiana University. She picked up the violin during her college days, after being trained in piano in her younger days. Anya settled in the Arnaudville area and still lives in the region on five acres on the Bayou Teche with her two boys and her husband, Richard Burgess. She loves the space they have which allows the kids to run around. She also maintains a shop behind her home where she originally repaired and built violins until she opened a full-service shop, Sola Violins, in downtown Lafayette. The moves allowed for the expansion of inventory and services and great accessibility for most of her clientele who travel from Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Alexandria, and beyond. One of the only violin shops in the state, Sola Violins specializes in the restoration, rentals, and sales of violin family instruments. Their clientele includes everyone from students to professionals and Cajun to classical players. Anya is also a violinmaker, having learned how to make violins in college. Surprisingly, our area has a great number of violin players, and as Anya says, "In this region, we may have one of the most per capita of violin players!" She is a board member of the Violin Society of America. Anya Burgess' tools of the trade in violin making and repair. A great deal of Sola Violins' business involves the complete restoration of instruments. Symphony players, people who inherit instruments, and people bringing in instruments damaged by the elements are included in her clientele. She works on all instruments included in the violin family including the viola and cello, as well as the occasional member of the bass family of instruments. The store also offers accessories, books and other accouterments needed to play the instruments. Sola Violins offers guidance for teachers and you can reference the list of local string teachers here. Anya at her store, Sola Violins, in Lafayette, LA. Anya Burgess makes and plays violins. "I have an elegant presentation, but I want my store to be a welcoming place. I want it to have a living room vibe. My goal is that more people play music It's my number one goal." Photo by: Christina Clusiau Interestingly, COVID has affected the type of business Sola Violins attracts, but not the volume of business. Anya has found herself just as busy in 2020 as in years past, but this year has seen more rentals of instruments than sales, as people have picked up instruments to pass the time. Anya rents to people of all ages and notes it is very affordable to rent an instrument as you determine before purchasing if the choice was the right fit. A lifelong musician, Anya plays the fiddle with two Grammy-nominated Cajun bands, Bonsoir Catin and the Magnolia Sisters. She is the newest member of Magnolia Sisters, which she joined eighteen years ago. The band was first nominated for a Grammy in 2010 and again in 2015. Fellow band members include Anne Savoy, Jane Vidrine, and Lisa Trahan. She also plays alongside Bonsoir, Catin band members Kristi Guillory, Christine Balfa, Maegan Berard, Ashley Hayes Steele, and Danny DeVillier. Bonsoir, Catin was also nominated for a Grammy in 2015 and Anya recalled with delight the experience of traveling to the awards ceremony with both bands. Anya Burgess plays the fiddle with two Grammy-nominated Cajun bands, Bonsoir,

Watch the penultimate in our Gospel of Mark Series - The Crucifixion.
Join Richard as he shares from Mark 13:3-22. - www.gatewaychurchashford.co.uk - The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times 13 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!” 2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” 5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. 9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13 Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’[a] standing where it[b] does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. 20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

Jon Michelet gikk bort 14. april 2018. Michelet selv ble tildelt Østfoldprisen i 2013, Norsk Sjøoffisersforbunds hederspris i 2015 og Anders Jahres kulturpris i 2016 for sitt arbeid.Musikk og sjømannsviser ved Richard Burgess.Produsent: Litteraturhuset FredrikstadRedigering: Stian-René Koppegodt EvensenJingle: Christoffer Schou See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

How do you teach ethics to engineering students? Guests Dr. Beccy Hambright and Richard Burgess talk about their experience tackling that question, particularly when it comes to students in K-12. They share their history at the Texas Tech University College of Engineering, where they supported students and teachers in engineering and engineering ethics. Hambright ran the Texas STEM Center until 2012, and Burgess teaches engineering ethics classes to students. Hambright and Burgess then discuss the importance of ethics in the field, pedagogical techniques for K-12, the importance of diversity, and project-based learning in class. Episode #64: Last year, we released 37 episodes on a wide variety of topics in music. From rights to royalties, we covered subjects important to artists and those who support them. On this episode, we look back at the major issues we reported on in 2016 and those who they impacted most. We hear from musician Melissa Ferrick about the Spotify lawsuits that started the year, then A2IM's Richard Burgess gives us the scoop on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and how it's creating problems for the industry. David Israelite of the NMPA clearly breaks down how the Department of Justice has handled the consent decrees and what that means for creators. These stories are still developing, so check back for updates! Episode #38: What do artists like Katy Perry, Debbie Harry, Lionel Richie and hundreds of others have against one piece of legislation? Along with many in the creative community, they're calling for reform of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The DMCA was drafted in 1998 — before platforms like Napster and YouTube existed — with the intent of bringing copyright up to date with the digital age. Unfortunately, according to those calling for reform, the outdated act has allowed tech giants to profit from copyright infringement while artists' own earnings plummet. On this episode, we dissect the issue and discuss solutions with Richard Burgess, CEO of A2IM, RIAA's Senior Executive Vice President Mitch Glazier, Perry Resnick of Music Managers Forum, and musician and lawyer John Strohm.
March 11, 2014. Although mass digitization was ongoing in 2008, the practice has since become much more prevalent. Thus, it is important to understand how mass digitization fits into an orphan works solution. Because many of the comments submitted in response to the Notice indicated that the issue of mass digitization should be treated separately from the issue of orphan works, it also is important to understand whether mass digitization fits into an orphan works solution. The Copyright Office discussed the intersection of mass digitization and orphan works at the public roundtable meetings, the types of digitization projects that should be covered by any legislative proposal, the relative risks and benefits of mass digitization projects, the types of entities that might be able to engage in such activities under any legislative proposal, and the types or categories of works that should be covered. Karyn Temple Claggett, Catherine Rowland, Frank Muller, Jan Constantine, Jonathan Band, June Besek, Richard Burgess, Michael W. Carroll, Blane Dessy, Melissa Levine, Andrew McDiarmid, Corynne McSherry, Mickey Osterreicher, Brooke Penrose, Janice T. Pilch, Leah Prescott, Jerker Ryden and Ben Sheffner. March 11, 2014. The Copyright Office's 2006 Report did not suggest creation of an exception to copyright for use of orphan works, but instead recommended that Congress limit the remedies that the copyright owner could seek against good faith users of orphan works to injunctive relief and "reasonable compensation" for the use of the work. The appropriate structure and scope of remedies continues to be a significant issue of concern for both copyright owners and potential users of orphan works. During this panel discussion, remedies and procedures in the context of orphan works were discussed by Karyn Temple Claggett, Catherine Rowland, Patrick Boyle, Richard Burgess, Greg Cram, Emily Feltren, Elizabeth Townsend Gard, Ann F. Hoffman, Ariel Katz, Lee Knife, Nancy Kopans, James Love, Maria D. Matthews, Mickey Osterreicher, Salley Shannon, Chuck Slocum and Michael Weinberg. The Today programme says its "fair, balanced and impartial" in its science coverage. The statement came in response to comments after interviewing former Chancellor of the Exchequer Lord Lawson, a climate change sceptic, alongside Sir Brain Hoskins, Professor of Meteorology and Director of the Grantham Institute of Climate Change at Imperial College. Today was the cause of further frustration on Monday when many listeners felt a story about genetically modified potatoes had no opposing side represented. We speak to some of those listeners about Today's coverage of controversies in science. British success at the Sochi Winter Olympics has created added interest in the games - as well as an 'enthusiastic' response from TV commentator Aimee Fuller to snowboarder Jenny Jones' bronze medal win last week. But what about radio coverage from Sochi? We'll be asking the Head of BBC radio sport, Richard Burgess, why 5Live Sports Extra has been quiet throughout the games when listeners have an appetite for more from Sochi. The BBC's Director of Television, Danny Cohen, has promised no more all-male comedy panel shows. We find out from the Radio 4 Commissioning Editor for Comedy whether Radio 4 will also go so far as to ban all-male comedy shows. And Feedback listener and folk music enthusiast Diana Butler takes us behind the scenes at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards to find out whether the network is pushing this once niche music into the mainstream. Producers: Karen Pirie and Katherine Godfrey A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
