Peter Sterling moved to Sedona, Arizona, drawn to its energy vortices, its natural beauty, and its powerful connection to a higher purpose in life. It was in Sedona that Peter discovered his affinity for, or more accurately, his mystical connection with the Celtic harp. It was 1993 and he took to the instrument, without any formal training or lessons, like the proverbial fish to water. His playing talent sprung forth in an almost organic manner, surprising Peter most of all. As part of this emergence of his muse, and tapping into the positive energies that swirl around Sedona, Peter decided that it was time to rethink much of his life. Making changes to his diet, engaging in energy healing, chiropractic medicine, herbal treatments, and shamanic workshops, Peter “came out of the shadows,” as it were and emerged a wholly changed person. His career as a recording artist began in 1994 with his first album, Harp Magic, released on the World Disc label. Success came almost immediately as the recording was nominated for the Best Instrumental Album award by NAIRD (now A2IM), an organization for independent musicians. His acclaim continued and grew exponentially in the 2000s with multiple nominations from the prestigious website New Age Reporter/Zone Music Reporter, including several nominations for Album of the Year. His albums consistently charted high up in their top 100, including grabbing the #1 spot for his 2012 release, Patterns of Reflection and 2013 Twilight Serenade.. His most recent recognition came in 2020 when he won the Hollywood Music and Media Award for Best New Age song. And also in 2022 winning the Gold COVR Visionary Award for his album The Winding Way. His latest single and video The Long Cold Winter released in march of 2022 has won several awards in international film festivals including the Los Angeles Cinematography Award,Swedish International Film Fest, European Cinematography Awards to name a few.Websiteharpmagic.comBooksHearing the Angels Sing

Welcome to No Need to Ask Podcast! My name is Amani Duncan and I will be your host on this journey. I recently launched a new series for No Need to Ask entitled "CEO Talk". On this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking to one of the music industry's greats - Madeline Nelson, CEO of Heads Music. Madeline is a seasoned music executive with years of experience, ranging from her work as manager of R&B supergroup Blackstreet to her A&R work with Michael Jackson, Marketing work for J. Cole and current management of Wyclef Jean. After holding the role of Senior Vice President of A&R / Artist Relations across all 3 of the Major labels at Sony Music, where she served as a direct report to CEO Doug Morris, Madeline shifted back to artist management and also founded an indie label staffed entirely by Women. The experience at such a high level at Sony Music gave her a keen understanding of what products should go to market and best practices for organic entry of those products. It also fueled her determination to work towards equality for Women in the music industry.Madeline’s business is an independent, boutique-style music company based in New York City, that focuses on services within management, brand strategy, record label, and publishing.Madeline firmly believes in exploring new technology as a strong way forward for the music business and embraces digital streaming services as an opportunity for artists to take more control of their careers and be paid more fairly.Learn more about Madeline Nelson at www.headsmusic.com. Take a deep dive into the rapid growth of the indie sector, one of the seismic shifts that gained the most attention at the Music Tectonics Conference. Our guide to this shifting terrain is Tracy Maddux, CEO of AVL Digital Group, the parent company of CD Baby, AdRev and DashGo, which all provide DIY Musicians with trusted tools for distribution, marketing, and monetization. Being independent doesn’t mean being alone: learn how Merlin, A2IM, and other organizations unite indie players to multiply their advocacy and negotiating power with governmental bodies and DSPs. As Tracy explains, indie growth is not just about scale. It's about options, audiences, and working together. Tracy places independent music’s growing market share in the context of the music biz and beyond, and shows how that growth interacts with other trends like globalization and the crumbling of the mainstream to shake up power structures. Get a deeper understanding of Mark Mulligan’s prediction in last week’s podcast that the rise of the self-empowered artist will be a more powerful shift than music streaming! In this week's episode Blasko and Mike revisit one of the first ever episodes and discuss how their predictions for 2017 and Paul Resnikoff's article: http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2016/12/19/music-industry-anti-predictions/ Wireless headphones won't take over the world (yet). Apple won't close its iTunes download store (yet). Streaming music won't reach 250 million paying subscribers. (Currently at 100 million.) *According to IFPI's Global Music Report, streaming now makes up the majority (roughly 60%) of digital revenue and for the first time, digital revenues make up 50% of the share of total recorded music industry revenues. Rough estimates show that if 10% of the global population eventually subscribes to a music streaming service, the music industry's worldwide recorded music revenues will far exceed its best year ever in 1999. In fact, a recent Goldman Sachs report predicted that streaming will hit $34bn in revenue in 2030, as part of a healthy $41bn industry.  The Grammys will not be spectacular. Independent artists make up 55% of nominations in all non-producer and non-spoken word categories, according to tabulations from A2IM. In 43 of the 81 categories, the majority of nominees were on independent labels. Independent music is doing better than ever with a record global market share of 37.32% according Billboard. Last year more than two-thirds of Grammy nominations were independent releases. Independent music's authenticity, vitality, and genre diversity ensure its keystone role in the recording industry and American culture. ‘Spotify screws artists!' will finally die.  The music industry won't change YouTube. (artists don't want another losing war against technology (right or wrong). Which means YouTube is all about exposure and micro-penny payments, in 2017 and beyond.) Vinyl won't disappoint.* Sales reports from most Coalition Of  Independent Music Stores show Black Friday sales  increases ranged from +5% to an astounding +53%, with an average increase of 13.8%.  Only two stores reported decreases from their 2016 sales, while a couple reported flat sales.  Less comprehensive data from Small Business Saturday was also positive, ranging from flat to +19% over 2016 sales. Streaming will grow; the number of streaming companies won't. Check out our sponsor Rockabilia and pick up all the merch you've ever wanted at www.rockabilia.com Want more industry insight? Episode #53: The idea of large companies collecting information about you for free feels shady, especially when they use that data for profit. Most big tech businesses collect personal information in some fashion, including your favorite streaming services. On one hand, data helps these services tailor your playlists and lets artists know who's listening to them. On the other, data mining can invade listeners' privacy for profit. On this episode we talk to the founder of a new streaming service called Resonate. Peter Harris hopes that his alternative model will benefit artists -- and protect consumers' privacy. We also welcome musician, music business consultant and activist Kiran Gandhi back to the show to demonstrate how artists can benefit from data-driven insights. A2IM CEO Richard Burgess then goes into detail about his recent Op-Ed on Hypebot, “O.P.I.P. Yeah You Know - Free?”

How To Fix The Music Business

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2016 37:44

These days, success in the music business is about survival. Major labels can lose millions and still stand because they’re owned by giant corporations. A couple of consecutive bad years for a major and there’s usually a purge, new management brought in, the roster overhauled, maybe they’re merged with another label. And a dreadful side effect of risk aversity that follows these changes is that the music that gets signed and released becomes progressively “safer”. It’s different for independent labels. Successful independents constantly reinvent themselves, and rarely play it safe with the artists they sign and music they release. The best indies are on point, way out in front of the majors, showing us where music is going. It’s inherently risky, especially when you’re paying the bills yourself. Which is why the accomplishents of Beggars Group are all the more stunning. Founded by Martin Mills as the Beggars Banquet label in 1977 during the height of punk rock, Beggars Group has deftly navigated 40 years of changes in musical tastes and technology. They haven’t just survived, they’ve thrived. Evolving into a label owner and distributor, Beggars Group handles Matador Records, XL Recordings, Rough Trade Records, Young Turks and 4AD. A cursory glance at the roster of acts they distribute is staggering. Jack White. Alabama Shakes. FKA Twigs. Radiohead. Warpaint. Grimes. The National. Adele. And over the past 40 years, they’ve been instrumental in bringing some of the most important alternative music ever created into the world by artists like Gary Numan, The Pixies, The Prodigy, Dead Can Dance, and Cocteau Twins. At the helm of Beggar’s digital business is our guest on the show for this episode, Simon Wheeler. As the largest independent music group of labels in Europe, Beggars Group can change the landscape of digital music with their strategic decisions; and Simon has helped crafted and execute these strategies at Beggars since 1997. He’s been inside the guts of every significant digital music opportunity the industry has faced since the beginning. And in this episode, we get deep inside the streaming music landscape, what it means for independent labels, and where Simon feels we’re heading after 20 years in digital music. Along with many in the creative community, they're calling for reform of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The DMCA was drafted in 1998 — before platforms like Napster and YouTube existed — with the intent of bringing copyright up to date with the digital age. Unfortunately, according to those calling for reform, the outdated act has allowed tech giants to profit from copyright infringement while artists' own earnings plummet. On this episode, we dissect the issue and discuss solutions with Richard Burgess, CEO of A2IM, RIAA's Senior Executive Vice President Mitch Glazier, Perry Resnick of Music Managers Forum, and musician and lawyer John Strohm.
