Beziehungsweise eigentlich beschwert sich Birdman, der Riggan immer wieder in Visionen erscheint. Meist nur als Stimme, aber einmal auch in full flesh und in full costume mit riesigen Schwingen. Riggan Thomson will etwas von Bedeutung schaffen: Eine Theateradaption einer Kurzgeschichte am Broadway. Er gibt alles was er emotional und finanziell zu bieten hat in dieses Projekt. Birdman aus dem Jahr 2014 besteht aus einem einzigen zweistündigen Shot (zumindest will er so wirken), ein Film über Theater und Filmbusiness, über Fanservice versus Kunst, ein Film über Ambitionen und ein Film übers Scheitern. Người ta nhận ra không phải tác phẩm điện ảnh nào đạt tới đài cao danh vọng như Oscar đều là “khó xem”, đặc biệt với “Birdman”, khi ngoài việc gặt hái cơn mưa giải thưởng tại lễ trao giải danh giá này vào năm 2015, tác phẩm còn đạt doanh thu cao gần gấp 10 lần. Điều gì làm nên sức hấp dẫn lớn đến vậy cho bộ phim mà nội dung thật ra nói về một nam diễn viên đã già, đã hết thời, đang cố gắng vật lộn với những ám ảnh xưa cũ và tìm lại chính mình - ngoài lối diễn xuất tuyệt vời như đo ni đóng giày cho Micheal Keaton? Ngoài những ấn tượng với lối dựng phim hầu như không cắt cảnh, tất cả nối dài như một màn kịch trên sân khấu và âm thanh bằng những nhịp trống khi trầm khi bổng dồn dập không nguôi? Câu trả lời là hãy tự thân chiêm ngưỡng tác phẩm, tự thân chìm đắm vào 120 phút phim, tự thân cảm nhận những điều mà có lẽ chỉ diễn ra trên sân khấu ấy, chắc hẳn, khán giả sẽ không bao giờ có thể quên một nỗi ám ảnh mang tên “Birdman”.   Khát vọng hào quang Để tóm tắt phim thì rõ ràng đây là một câu chuyện có vẻ đã cũ. Bộ phim nói về Riggan Thomson, một ngôi sao đã từng rất thành công trong vai siêu anh hùng Người chim. Hai mươi năm sau khi hết thời, Riggan đang cố gắng tìm lại ánh hào quang cũ qua công việc đạo diễn kiêm diễn viên chính của vở “Chúng ta nói gì khi bàn tới tình yêu” trên sân khấu Broadway. Ông đã tự bỏ tiền để mời diễn viên và dàn dựng vở kịch nói này, thậm chí phải đặt cả nhà để vay ngân hàng. Nhiều người cho rằng Riggan trở lại để tìm kiếm bản thân và chính ông cũng tự thuyết phục mình như thế. Nhưng rõ ràng, điều mà ông đi tìm lại là sự nổi tiếng, là sự chú ý mà ông từng có. Với những ai chưa chạm tới vinh quang thì có vẻ ánh hào quang của sự nổi tiếng là quá xa vời, có thể đạt được, có thể không. Còn với Riggan, tất cả đã xuất hiện, đã tồn tại trong đời. Ông đã ngấm nó, đã gặm nhấm và thích thú. Cho nên, giống như một cơn nghiện, tưởng đã dứt ra hoàn toàn, mà sự thật, nó vẫn ở đó, chỉ đợi thời cơ để tiếp tục trỗi dậy, khao khát, thèm muốn và bằng mọi giá phải đạt được. Một phần trong Riggan muốn tách ra khỏi hào quang quá khứ, tách ra khỏi nhân vật mà người ta “đóng đinh” cho mình, là siêu anh hùng Người chim, một phần khác, ông thèm khát và mong mỏi được trở lại, được sùng bái và tôn thờ như trước kia. Khao khát được Yêu. Nỗi khao khát ấy được lặp đi lặp lại từ đầu tới cuối phim, bằng cả những chi tiết được trau chuốt tỉ mỉ, bằng cả những câu thoại được thốt lên. Là đoạn Riggan nói chuyện với vợ cũ của mình khi hai người gặp nhau và ông đề cập tới chuyện gán ngôi nhà mà ông tính để dành cho con gái sau này cho ngân hàng. Riggan kể rằng trên một chuyến bay, ông đã ngồi sau hàng ghế của George Clooney, một ngôi sao hạng A của Hollywood. Lúc đó máy bay đi vào vùng nhiễu động, rung lắc ghê gớm. Trong lúc ai cũng hoảng sợ thì bản thân ông lại vô cùng bình tĩnh. Ý nghĩ duy nhất lóe lên trong đầu là nếu có tai nạn, thì ngày mai, con gái của ông sẽ đọc bảng tin về cái chết của George Clooney chứ không phải ông. Rồi tới Sam, cô con gái nghiện ma túy của Riggan, tưởng như là một cô gái hời hợt, lạnh lùng với tất cả, phán xét tất cả nhưng cô cũng nhận ra cái khao khát cháy bỏng trong Cha. Chính cô đã nói thẳng vào mặt Cha rằng ông không tìm kiếm nghệ thuật gì cả, ông chỉ đang muốn hòa nhập lại với cái thế giới đã quên mất ông là ai bởi bản thân Riggan đang có nỗi sợ, sợ mình chẳng là gì hết, sợ bị lãng quên. Chính vì nỗi sợ ấy, người ta thấy vở kịch “Chúng ta nói gì khi bàn tới tình yêu” mà Riggan đang dàn dựng cũng như một lời bộc bạch của ông. Trong vai một người chồng bị vợ phản bội, phút cuối, Riggan bắt quả tang cô vợ ngoại tình và đau đớn thốt lên “Tôi không được Yêu, tôi không tồn tại, thậm chí, tôi còn không ở đây”. Sự thật phũ phàng Riggan loay hoay vướng vào cái vòng tròn luẩn quẩn vớt vát hào quang đã cũ với những ám ảnh không thôi về nhân vật Người chim. Nhà làm phim thật tài tình khi ngay từ những phút mở đầu đã bày ra hình ảnh Riggan bay lơ lửng giữa phòng như một siêu nhân thực thụ. Rất nhiều đoạn trong phim khán giả mơ hồ lầm tưởng ông liệu có phải là một siêu nhân thật, liệu đây có phải một phim về siêu anh hùng khi liên tục những hành động bay nhảy, dùng ý chí điều khiển đồ vật của Riggan được sử dụng. Cho đến tận những phút thứ 90 của phim, người ta mới biết thật sự đó chỉ là những tưởng tượng của Riggan. Chính bản thân ông còn bị ám ảnh về nhân vật đến như vậy thì những người hâm mộ ông làm sao dễ dàng thoát ra được. Chưa hết, “Birdman” dường như còn dẫn dắt người xem tới hậu trường của giới showbiz, để cho ta thấy được rất nhiều mặt trái trong đó. Thế giới của những ngôi sao, của sân khấu đằng sau ánh đèn tỏa sáng là những khoảng tối đầy mệt mỏi rệu rã và lố bịch. Những nhân vật bao quanh Riggan đều là đại diện cho một tiếng nói nào đó của thực tại muốn thức tỉnh và dội gáo nước lạnh vào ông.  Jake, luật sư đồng thời là bạn của Riggan, mở miệng ra là Tiền. Trong đầu Jake lúc nào cũng loanh quanh tiền đầu tư, tiền bán vé, diễn viên nào sẽ mang lại lợi nhuận. Bất chấp những gì có thể diễn ra một cách tồi tệ, doanh thu là vấn đề bận tâm số Một. Lesly, một cô diễn viên trẻ được Riggan ký hợp đồng diễn, luôn cảm thấy hoang mang về bản thân và Laura, người tình chưa từng được một lời động viên ngọt ngào của Riggan. Cả hai đều có những áp lực kinh khủng để rồi phút chốc, họ sẵn sàng ôm hôn nhau, trao cho nhau những âu yếm của một cuộc đụng chạm đồng giới không suy nghĩ. Nhà phê bình phim có tiếng Dickinson, người luôn giữ khư khư góc nhìn định kiến với Riggan, sẵn sàng nhấn chìm vở kịch của ông dù chưa xem và cũng không có ý định xem chỉ vì ông đã thuê những diễn viên non nớt vào nghề mà không báo cho bà biết trước.      Và một Mike, anh chàng diễn viên nổi tiếng ngang tàng, chỉ sống thật trên sân khấu, còn lại, cả cuộc đời anh ta như là một tấn trò, một vở kịch khổng lồ cho anh ta mặc sức diễn một cách chân thực nhất. Giữa những con người ấy, Riggan xoay vần để gắng gượng hoàn thành vở kịch mà ông cho rằng sẽ níu lại những gì đã mất bằng sự trau chuốt tỉ mỉ từng đạo cụ, từng chi tiết nhỏ. Thế nhưng, thực tế cuộc sống tiếp tục kéo “ông già mặt xệ, da nhăn, cơ bắp rệu rã” ấy tỉnh giấc. Giờ người ta không đánh giá ông như là một nghệ sĩ mà người ta đánh giá ông là một “celebrity” - người của công chúng. “Tối nay họ cười cha nhưng ngày mai họ sẽ Twitt” - Sam đã nói như thế khi Riggan e sợ mình sẽ trở thành trò đùa của thiên hạ. Thế kỉ 20 đã trôi qua được vài phần rồi, người ta có Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Blog để mà đặt tất cả lên và phán xét, những thứ mà bản thân Riggan từ chối công nhận và cũng chưa bao giờ thử dùng tới. Việc ông mặc đồ lót chạy cuống cuồng ra đường vì một sự cố nho nhỏ ở rạp hát không hề làm ông bị mất mặt mà trái lại, chỉ sau một đêm, có tới hàng trăm ngàn lượt xem trên mạng và họ lại nhớ tới ông, ngôi sao một thời. Lúc này, để được nhớ tới có gì khó đâu. Ngay cả việc Riggan tự bắn tung cả mũi của mình, phải vào bệnh viện lắp mũi giả cũng tạo nên hiệu ứng vô cùng đặc biệt. Sam lập tài khoản Twitter cho Cha và sau sự việc đó, có tới hơn 80 ngàn lượt follow Riggan. Người ta không nhắc tới vở kịch với biết bao công sức, nước mắt, thậm chí cả máu mà Riggan đã đổ xuống, người ta chỉ theo dõi ông vì ông tự bắn tung mũi mình ngay trên sân khấu. Ánh hào quang ấy là Thật hay là Giả? Ai thật sự quan tâm tới Riggan và những cảm xúc của ông? Hay cả khi ông nói ông ghét nhất hoa hồng thì người hâm mộ và cả con gái ông cũng mua ngập một phòng toàn hoa hồng để chúc mừng ông sau buổi diễn? Được Yêu tức là như thế thôi ư? Cuối phim, người ta có thể thở phào nhẹ nhõm khi Sam, cuối cùng, cũng mang tới bệnh viện một bó hoa tử đinh hương cho Riggan. Loài hoa có ý nghĩa là “càng ở gần Cha lâu thì con càng yêu cha hơn”. Phim có một cái kết mở để người xem tự cảm nhận, là một sự hẫng hụt tiếc nuối nhưng cũng là hạnh phúc của Riggan bởi người mà ông yêu thương nhất, là con gái ông, đã nhìn thấy cái Đẹp, cái Thật, cái Thăng hoa mà Cha cô đã đạt được trong cuộc đời bằng tình yêu thật sự, trong sáng, đầy ắp thấu hiểu và sẻ chia. Dường như, nước mắt và máu của Riggan đã đổ xuống không hoàn toàn vô nghĩa!

It's not everyday that you have to deliver 50 packages. Unless you're a FedEx driver. In which case, that's a slow day. Always pressed for time, this FedEx driver went back to help a woman who was having a rough day. Amanda Riggan didn't know that 15 Million people would soon know how she helped that woman. Running a local non-profit, Hungry Heroes, which has a mission to feed para-military departments throughout the country, all while delivering FedEx packages in South Carolina was almost that a single mom of a young daughter could shoulder. With some help and support from organizations and her community, Amanda was able to overcome what she didn't know to assemble a team to help grow the cause that is rooted in healing. "Move your feet." Amanda tells those that pay attention. When you do, you start to accomplish what you're meant to with those that you're meant to do it with. One day in May 1997, a young couple on their way to work off a dirt road in the mountains of Colorado spotted a man dragging a woman’s body up a trail. The man fled, leaving behind a bloodied, dying woman. The beautiful, wooded area seemed such an incongruous place for a violent crime that the couple had a hard time believing what they were seeing. Indeed the investigation into the death of young street walker Anita Paley would lead from that idyllic spot to the seamy underbelly of Denver and a world of prostitution, drug dealers and violent criminals. And it would expose the lives of two of that world’s inhabitants, the suspect, Robert Riggan, and Anita’s friend, Joanne Cordova, a former cop-turned-crack addict and hooker. In the past, Cordova had submitted to violent sex with Riggan in exchange for drugs; it was just part of her life on the mean streets. But when her friend Anita was murdered, Joanne had to make a choice. She could go to her former colleagues on the police department and tell them what she suspected, and put her life in danger as “a snitch.” Or she could look the other way, and let a suspected killer walk free and continue his attacks on women. Facial Expressions: What can you learn about a person by just looking at their face?Richard MullerYes, unless that person is a top actor or a top poker player, or a top politician.I've discussed this at some length with Paul Ekman, the modern expert (and the inspiration for the TV series "Lie to Me"). All of us make inadvertent micro expressions, that other people read. Some people are extremely good at it. Ekman told me that he could easily find an expert by going to a local police station and asking for their "best interrogator." Such a person was invariably someone who could tell when a person was telling the truth or not. Such people really do exist.Ekman himself had become an expert, not by instinct, but by study and self-training. Yet, he said, he could not successfully judge professional poker players. They were the best he had met at both reading the faces of others, and hiding their own. The very best not only hid their own, but gave false signals to others to mislead them. Their "tells" were extremely subtle, since they were competing with other experts at reading micro expressions. I immediately was confirmed in my prior decision not to play cards for money.A really good movie actor takes advantage of these micro expressions to convey to an audience innermost (but in this case false) feelings. The audience doesn't even know why the actor is so compelling, because we are not trained to pick up these expressions consciously. This is why there has always been advice (especially to young women) to avoid dating actors. They can too readily mislead you about their feelings.I recommend the movie Birdman in which actors are playing actors; look at the skill they use when they are portraying an actor acting, to make you realize that they are just acting, but when they are not acting as if they are acting, they use their full skills to make you forget they are acting. (I hope you can follow that!)  [Spoiler alert] The one exception in this movie is when Riggan (played by Michael Keaton) talks about how his father abused him; he uses all of his acting skills, without holding back, and as a result not only is Mike convinced (played by Edward Norton), but so are we.Recognizing the skill of professional actors led me to a temporary conviction that professional actors should not be allowed to be politicians. When I suggested this as a law, my wife pointed out the flaw. Many of the best actors never become actors; they go right into politics. I'm currently reading the wonderful book Dreadnought by Robert Massie, and he is describing how Bernhard von Bulow, German chancellor before WWI, exploited his skill at this.There is a famous quote, whose origin is actually not settled (attributed to every famous humorist in history), that the key to success is the ability to fake sincerity.

"Birdman" is one of the best movies of the year.  Michael Keaton (Riggan) riffs on his persona as a third-rate actor mostly known for playing a superhero (Birdman, in this case) who is staging a Broadway play in which he wrote and also stars.  Ambitious to say the least.  Aiding and abetting Riggan is group of loyal thespians, marshaled to their cause by Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) a famous actor and last minute replacement to the cast.  Shiner's presence is a boon for the show but ultimately a threat to Riggan.  In the days leading up the premiere, Riggan must juggle his cast, his ego and even his tighty-whities (in Phil's favorite scene).  It's no accident that the term 'balls' gets repeatedly bandied about in "Birdman" as a way to encompass the magnitude of what Riggan is attempting.  This film will leave you with a lot to discuss and many great performances to enjoy.  Phil said "Birdman" is best appreciated by those with a background in theater.  Andrew marveled at the cinematographic excellence of Emmanuel Lubezki's dexterous camerawork.  Wait, we didn't even get to talk about the whole stylistic conceit of the film!  Aw, just go out and see "Birdman", it gets four feathers from In the Queue, the highest rating!
