This week, we highlight a live panel for APG's 20th anniversary, hosted by Ross Golan. The event honors not just a company, but a community of artists, songwriters, producers, and all those who believe in the power of music to inspire, challenge, and connect us.Twenty years ago, APG set out with a bold vision: to be an independent powerhouse for both music publishing and artist development. Founded by Mike Caren, APG has grown into a unique space where creativity thrives and where artists can build their brands and realize their visions on their own terms. It's been a launchpad for incredible talent like Charlie Puth, Kehlani, Kevin Gates, Ava Max, and so many others. But more than that, it's been a platform where music creators are empowered to succeed on every level—whether it's securing partnerships across film, TV, and advertising, or finding the best possible collaborations with writers and producers who help bring their music to life. We had the pleasure of interviewing Sophia Scott over Zoom video! Known for her soulful storytelling and powerhouse vocals, EMPIRE's SOPHIA SCOTT is blazing a permanent trail for herself in Nashville and beyond with her newest single “One Of These Days,” available now. Painting a poignant visual from her parents' struggling marriage, Sophia illustrates how she defined her own perspectives on love, offering a candid glimpse into her own personal story and emphasizing the mantra: ‘everything's meant to be.' Penned with Tiggs (Nathan Fertig) of Ross Golan's Unknown Music, “One Of These Days” is where vulnerability meets hope… “I wanna live like I'm dying, I want to laugh till I'm crying but my heart still breaks, I hope it falls into place, maybe one of these days,” Scott sings. “This is the most personal and arguably most important song I've put out so far. It tells the story of my parents' divorce, then my own first love and heartbreak, and finally dives into me trying to figure out my career, bills, and life as an adult. Hoping that there is resolve at some point and that all the hard things that have happened along the way start to make sense ‘one of these days,'” says Scott. “'One of these days' becomes a mantra for my whole life essentially. After all, life is about the journey and the lessons learned along that journey.” Bringing poise, gusto and grit to her own unique genre, Sophia's musicality is dynamic and exciting. Her boundary-defying creative range flows seamlessly through the country, pop, rock, and R&B sounds that she grew up on. She writes from the heart and shoots from the hip, unafraid to explore the depths of her emotionally-charged experiences. Instead of retreating, she confronts heartbreak head-on and turns trauma into triumph with her lyrics. Following a childhood immersed in music, she spent six years in Los Angeles, playing locally renowned showcases (We Found New Music, Breaking Sound) and headlining her own residencies, before planting her roots in Nashville. A viral YouTube cover of Tove Lo's “Habits (Stay High)” helped set the stage for Scott's buzzworthy originals, such as the “Closure” and “Quit, which cracked 1 million Spotify streams and earned high praise from Atwood Magazine, who raved, “Having grown up on classic rock, R&B, and country/soul. Scott takes care in crafting both the sound and meaning of her songs – never shirking one for another.” Her latest singles “Sweetheart” and “Side Effects” offer an exciting preview of her much anticipated project, expected in 2022. In 1974 country music, singer songwriter, Dolly Parton got wind that Elvis Presley wanted to record her new song, “I Will Always Love You.“ According to Dolly, the deal fell through when Elvis's manager demanded 50% of the publishing revenue. Dolly refused, released the song herself, and years later arranged a more equitable deal with Whitney Houston, who of course made it a massive hit.  It's a juicy bit of industry history that actually speaks more to our current reality than you might think. What Elvis's management did, demand a cut of the publishing revenue on top of the money he'd already make from album sales and live shows, is not an anomaly.  Songwriter, Emily Warren knows this all too well. Emily's a songwriter and performer in Los Angeles. You've heard her on the show before in part, because she's written some huge hits, including Dua Lipa's “New Rules” and The Chainsmokers “Don't Let Me Down.”  What happened to Dolly in ‘74 has happened a lot to Emily. She says that countless times, after an artist decides to record a song of hers that she wrote without any involvement with the artist, she'll get an email from the artist's management team, asking for a cut of her publishing. She says the emails are polite, but the mask and implied arrangement: give us a cut of the publishing they say, or we won't put out the song.  So Emily's started talking to other established songwriters she knows, Tayla Parx, Ross Golan, Justin Tranter, and Savan Kotecha—they've all been asked to give up publishing. Together they decided they wanted to do something about this practice. So they formed an organization called The Pact, a group of music professionals who refuse to give publishing away for songs where artists do not contribute. Their goal is to make the music business more equitable for the creative laborers. The single finds her reminding fans of what she does best: create vibrant, uplifting music that is real and honest to who she is as an artist. “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” caps off a busy 2020 for Stefani. She had two top 10 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart with fiancé Blake Shelton, “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere.” And her holiday album, ‘You Make It Feel Like Christmas,’ was just reissued with two new songs, including Ryan Tedder co-write “Here This Christmas.” And The Writer Is… Gwen Stefani!Artwork: Michael Richey White See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Happy holidays! I'm grateful to have had such thoughtful conversations with all of my guests on Coffee with BAO in the last couple of months. And also for the the chance to share their stories and to get constructive feedback from many of you. Thank you so much. There's no new episode of Coffee with BAO this week. But I wanted to tell you about why I started the show and where I'd like to see it go. A lot of interview shows are what I consider "Success Porn," glorifying people who've done great things by detailing how hard they worked or how innovative their solutions were. That's cool, but that's not what I wanted to do with Coffee with BAO. On my show, I want to emphasize that it's OK to be a work in progress. I want to highlight stories of people who made a few wrong turns and reiterate that wherever someone is in their path, it's an ongoing process and that we call can keep learning from each other. I wanna link to three podcasts that influenced the approach I took on Coffee with BAO. "How I Built This" with Guy Raz for giving Insight into the struggles, failures, and pivots of people who have accomplished notable things. https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510313/how-i-built-this "Open Belly" with Danielle Lehman for Seeking out stories of immigrants, industry outsiders, and oftentimes, showing how people reinvent themselves to pursue their culinary dreams. Open Belly is exceptionally well-produced by my good friend Danielle Lehman and her team. https://www.openbellypodcast.com "And the Writer Is..." with Ross Golan. I love the format of the casual conversation because such interesting stories are told that way. Ross draws a connection between a songwriter's life story and their work and their process. Overall, a great variety of music industry stories. https://www.andthewriteris.com What's next for Coffee with BAO? I'm looking forward to making Coffee with BAO even better in 2021 with better production value and more awesome guests. One thing I've been struggling with is getting more people to discover my show. So I'm asking you to help share your favorite episode with two people who you think would appreciate the show. I'm also using your comments and testimonials to apply for grants for the show. And when I get enough of a budget, I'll run some ads to grow my audience, so if you're feeling generous, please head over to coffeewithBAO.com to hit the blue "support" button and pitch in whatever you think this content is worth. It's a weird time, so no pressure. We had the opportunity to interview Max Frost! It began as an experiment.Music had always been the focus of my short, 17 year old, guitar playing life in Austin, Texas. I was obsessed with The Beatles, Hendrix, Sinatra, and Sam Cooke. The Blues were my foundation. I hung with a crowd of young musicians who shared my love of the classics. We listened to vinyl. We played in bands. My safe, little vintage rock world was turned on its head when underground hiphop came knocking at my door. Rappers wanted me to sing hooks on their songs. I never in a million years thought what I did made sense in hiphop. Eminem and Outkast had blown my mind as a kid, but it was still an alien world to me.As uncomfortable as it was, I jumped in. At first, my bluesy singing made the hooks come across as a sort of “blue-eyed soul” thing. I didn’t identify with that. The hooks I loved most had been sampled from old records. They contrasted the beat in a cool way. They felt distorted and fuzzy and their juxtaposition with modern music had an accidental magic. The experiment was to see if I could convince people that my hook was a sample. I sang more laid back, more like a crooner than a hard attacking soul singer. I distorted my voice with guitar amps and heavy reverbs that created a huge space. The summer I turned 19 I made this slow beat and wrote a hook over it called “Nice and Slow.” I used my sampled vocal approach and started sending the song around and playing it for people. The response was always, “Whoa! Where did you sample this from?” At that moment, my sound was born.By the spring, my songs were gaining some attention. “Nice and Slow” and “White Lies” charted on Hype Machine and a few months later I signed with Atlantic Records. A major-label deal marked a serious second chapter in my creative life. Songs were no longer practice swings. They counted. There were real stakes now. But with a new opportunity in front of me, I dove in head first.I now had access to collaborators and studios that enabled me to indulge in new sounds. Though I remained a producer on all the tracks and played 90 percent of the instruments, the songs were elevated thanks to the input of the brilliant writers and producers I met — guys like Benny Blanco, Nick Ruth, and Franc Tetaz. What began as an experiment in a basement lab blossomed into a larger-scale process, resulting in the songs on my EP, Intoxication.Sonically, I was inspired by artists like Amy Winehouse and Raphael Saadiq, who breathed fresh life into the classic ’60s soul sound. Their vintage songs have a modern edge to the production. My process is the reverse. I try to write songs that, if played on an acoustic guitar, are very modern. But my execution of the singing, instrumentation, and production is vintage.Lyrically, the songs on Intoxication personify love, money, and death as a drug, reflecting the way my submission to imagination has consumed me like a chemical. My experiment became an abstract mind state that I want the listener to visit. The experiment of music has led me to places I never thought I’d go in this world. In 2016, I did shows in Australia, Germany, London, and all over the US. It always shocks me to speak face to face with a person who has been listening to my music from the other side of the globe for years. It reminds me that, despite how much time I spend alone in a dark studio, there’s a world of people out there that you are trying to reach. If you really expose your truth to them in a song, it doesn’t matter where they are. They will respond. My travels have also led me to collaborations with artists around the world. I released a track called “Ghosting” with an amazing producer named St. Albion and also wrote/produced a track for a new artist from Australia named Mike Waters. As much as I’m focused on my own music right now, I look forward to one day spending a lot of time helping other people develop their own experiments. My last year of high school and only year of college were only made possible by my abuse of Adderall. I first discovered its powers attempting to write college essays, and pretty much lost my mind from there. It allowed me to get away with chronic procrastination and mainly focus on music. But it certainly spiraled me into an unbalanced state of sleeplessness, anxiousness, highs, and lows that left me a pretty worn out person. My Adderall years manifested themselves in a song I made with Cook Classics and Ross Golan called “Adderall” that I recently released. I sort of told the sad story in a funny way and tried to make it light hearted, and it seems that people have reacted. I’ll do college shows now where people come with their prescription bottles and ask me to sign them (which might be a crime or something I don’t know…). Credits:Theme Song: Scott Russo & Design: Oscar Rodriguez We want to hear from you! Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber put this question to the test in their new song "I Don't Care." The track takes us inside the head of an antisocial party hopper, who'd rather be back home with his lover. Nate and Charlie investigate how the songwriters works that message into their music and speak with Ross Golan about Ed Sheeran's songwriting brilliance.
