I worked with Seema at the National Theatre on a show called "My Country; a work in progress" in 2017, a verbatim show about the UK's reaction to the EU referendum result in 2016, known as "Brexit". Rufus Norris's production Small Island has returned to the National Theatre's Olivier stage, chronicling the experiences of a couple of the Windrush generation. Another epic on the same stage, Our Generation, distills the experience, in their own words, of young people today. Rufus Norris, artistic director of the National Theatre, speaks about the role and responsibility of the National Theatre as we emerge from the pandemic. Benedict Cumberbatch admitted to giving himself nicotine poisoning for his role in BAFTA-winning film The Power of the Dog. Joining Samira to discuss the practicalities as well as the impact of smoking on screen are actor and former president of the actors' union Equity, Malcolm Sinclair; Philippa Harte, set decorator for BBC period drama A Very British Scandal and Dr. Alex Barker, Lecturer in Psychology at the Nottingham Trent University. During the first lockdown in 2020, when all the museums were closed, the poet Alison Brackenbury became Front Row's “poet in remote residence”, sharing poems inspired by the museums we couldn't visit. Julian began his life surrounded by music with his siblings, and was sent away to music courses by his parents, where he developed a real need to make music and share it with others. Between his classical training at King's College Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music in London, he explored the world of historical performance at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, where he swiftly learnt Swiss German, how to improvise on the organ, and much more. Soon after his studies, on a course with Mary King and Rufus Norris at English National Opera, Julian discovered some unusual tips and tricks he would later apply in his work with singers. Julian now plays harpsichord at the highest level, coaches, and conducts – including his recent acclaimed recordings of John Eccles' Semele with the Academy of Ancient Music and Cambridge Handel Opera Company, and the world premiere recording of Stephen Dodgson's Margaret Catchpole: Two Worlds Apart for Naxos, and is also the Artistic Director of Cambridge Handel Opera Company. Special guest Adam Pecht returns to Your Stupid Minds to cover another poorly thought out and shoddily made horror film: 1990’s Demon Wind! Cory (Eric Larson) and his girlfriend Elaine (Francine Lapensée) visit the beautiful Napa Valley. The recent suicide of Cory's father compels him to visit his family’s old home. He assembles ten of his closest friends to help with the investigation, including Elaine’s jock ex-boyfriend Dell (T-Force’s Bobby Johnston), some nerd (Stephen Quadros), and a magician who is probably their drug dealer (Rufus Norris). Despite the creepy gas station owner warning them, they go to the house and encounter a bunch of creepy stuff, such as a minotaur head, weird demon children who turn people into dolls, skeletons, flying knifes, a handwritten book with Latin phrases, and so on. Needless to say they all die and/or turn into Star Trek aliens. Spoiler alert.

How is a script transformed into a staged play? The UK’s National Theatre is one of the world’s most prolific producing houses and its artistic director Rufus Norris might have the biggest job in British theatre: balancing its commercial success with the need to take a chance on a new play. His latest production, Small Island, is the first theatrical adaptation of the well-known novel by Andrea Levy about Caribbean migration. Set in the 1940s, it deals with the experiences of Jamaicans and Britons around the arrival of the Empire Windrush in London. Arts broadcaster and journalist Fiona Lindsay talks to Rufus Norris, as well as members of the cast and crew, to explore the technical and creative challenges of this epic production. With unique access to the rehearsal room, she takes us behind the scenes at the National Theatre to discover how a complex and much-loved story is brought to new life on stage

Tim enjoyed a rare night out at the National Theatre to watch the new play about #Brexit, My Country; a work in progress. Directed by Rufus Norris and written by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, it's a play with a difference, using the transcripts from hundreds of members of the public who were asked what they thought about a changing Britain and its relationship with the European Union. She's been described as a swearing, chain-smoking version of Mother Teresa. Mother-of-two Liz Clegg was once a firefighter in Devon who hung out at music festivals. These days she spends most of her time in France, raising funds and caring round the clock for hundreds of young unaccompanied children in the so-called Jungle in Calais. Her efforts have attracted international attention, with Clegg being invited to discuss her work in the US. Her admirers in the UK include the actress Juliet Stevenson. London Road is a film of the groundbreaking musical play. Directed by Rufus Norris, it tells the story of a community in Ipswich recovering from a series of gruesome murders. Louis de Bernieres' latest novel The Dust That Falls From Clouds looks at the lives of those 'left behind' by the First World War Channel 4's The Tribe is applying the techniques usually used in programmes such as 24 Hours in A+E to a tribe in rural Ethiopia - lots of cameras, lots of microphones and unique access to a largely hitherto unknown community. Patrick Marber's play The Red Lion deals with non-league football, corruption and compromised integrity. A retrospective exhibition of the work of Belgian artist Carsten Holler has opened at The Hayward Gallery in London. His work is characterised by playful interactivity - will it impress or delight our reviewers? Tom Sutcliffe's guests are Abigail Morris, Emma Jane Unsworth and Kerry Shale. With John Wilson. Five of the world's greatest ballet stars are together on stage this week in Kings Of The Dance at The London Coliseum. John talks to principal dancers Roberto Bolle and Marcelo Gomes. John Banville, the Man Booker Prize winning author of The Sea, also writes crime fiction under the pen name Benjamin Black. Now Banville, writing as Black, has taken on the legacy of Raymond Chandler and penned a hardboiled detective novel. John Banville discusses Chandler's iconic private eye, Phillip Marlowe, and the re-creation of Chandler's literary style. The life of French designer Yves Saint Laurent is the subject of two films this year. The first biopic looks at his taking over Christian Dior's fashion house at the age of 21, and finding creative success whilst battling with personal demons. Linda Grant, Orange Prize winner and author of The Thoughtful Dresses, reviews. Director Nicholas Hytner discusses his plans for the National Theatre in the year ahead. It's the last year Hytner will be responsible for the theatre, before Rufus Norris takes over the role. The season is dominated by new works from David Hare, Polly Stenham and Tom Stoppard. With Mark Lawson This morning it was announced that Rufus Norris will succeed Nicholas Hytner as the new director of the National Theatre. Norris, who has been associate director of the National Theatre for two years, where he directed the Amen Corner and London Road among other productions, will take over from April 2015. Rufus Norris talks to Mark Lawson about his future plans. As Sir David Jason, the star of Only Fools And Horses, Open All Hours, The Darling Buds of May, and A Touch of Frost, marks his five decade long career with an autobiography, he reveals why his career began almost by accident and how he can do an uncanny impression of Julian Clary. The artist Jeremy Deller shows Mark around his latest exhibition, All That Is Solid Melts Into Air, which has opened at Manchester Art Gallery. The show, which will tour the UK, explores what Deller sees as the continuing impact of the Industrial Revolution on British popular culture. Producer Ekene Akalawu.

With Kirsty Lang. It's been eight years since Lesley Garrett stepped on to the opera stage. Television, West End musicals and Strictly Come Dancing have been occupying her instead. Now she's back with Opera North, the company she began her career with, in a new production of Poulenc's one woman opera La Voix Humaine. She reflects on playing a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and sets a challenge for contemporary opera composers. Feast is a new play created by writers from Cuba, Brazil, America, Britain and Nigeria, and directed by Rufus Norris. It explores the Yoruba culture and what happened to it after slavery created a far flung diaspora. British writer Gbolahan Obisesan and director Rufus Norris discuss the genesis of the project. A new DVD From the Sea to the Land Beyond is a lyrical portrait of Britain's coastline from 1901 to the present day. The film travels through both World Wars, into peacetime and the modern age, and is all drawn from the BFI National Archive. The coast is explored as a place of leisure, industry and wild nature, and the film has been directed by Penny Woolcock, with a specially composed soundtrack by Brighton band British Sea Power. Penny Woolcock and British Sea Power's Martin Noble talk about their collaboration. An American adaptation of Michael Dobbs' political thriller House Of Cards is a genuine first, being a major TV series that is not being shown on television. Instead this big budget drama, starring Kevin Spacey, will be available only via Netflix, the download website. Mark Damazer delivers his verdict on whether this particular house of cards will stand or fall. Producer Stephen Hughes.

Det handlar om Stockholms filmfestival i veckans Kino. Vi har pratat om utseendefixering med hedersgästen Willem Dafoe, försöker navigera mellan fakta och fiktion i call girl-debatten. Och träffar festivalens solstråle Peter Fonda. En av festivalens utländska hedersgäster är den amerikanska skådespelaren Willem Dafoe, som tilldelas det nyinstiftade priset Stockholm Achievement Award. I juryns motivering står det bland annat att han med sin trettioåriga karriär - där han spelat allt från Gröna trollet i Spindelmannen till Jesus i Kristi sista frestelse - är en av världens mest mångfacetterade skådespelare, som kan "hypnotisera en publik genom endast ett ögonkast". Och just de där speciella ögonen och det speciella utseendet var det som Kinos Thella Johnson bestämde sig för att fråga om, när hon träffade Willem Dafoe på festivalens första dag. En av favoriterna till att ta hem pris i tävlingsserien på filmfestivalen i Stockholm är Beasts of the Southern Wild - som redan tagit hem priser på tunga festivaler som Sundance och Cannes. I just Cannes fick Kinos Lisa Bergström en intervju med regissören Benh Zeitlin, som då fortfarande var ovetande om det kommande prisregnet för hans sagolika film om den sexåriga flickan Hushpuppy, som bor i en stad som vagt liknar New Orleans... men som i filmen kallas för The Bathtub. Den svenska filmhöstens stora samtalsämne är Mikael Marcimains Call Girl. En film som anklagats för att peka ut Olof Palme som sexköpare av minderåriga - medan upphovspersonerna menar att det är en fri fantasi med inslag hämtade från verkligheten. Kino bjöd in filmens regissör, Mikael Marcimain och manusförfattaren Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten för att prata om gränsen mellan fiktion och verklighet. Regissören Rufus Norris är en av den brittiska teaterscenens klarast lysande stjärnor. Han har skrivit operan Doctor Dee tillsammans med Blurs Damon Albarn och blivit hyllad för sin uppsättning av musikalklassikern Cabaret i West End i London. Och på Stockholms filmfestival kan man nu se långfilmsdebuten Broken, om en elvaårig flickas dramatiska sommar i ett på ytan idylliskt bostadsområde - där det finns mängder av hemligheter under den lugna ytan. Karin Svensson älskade filmen, och stämde träff med regissören Rufus Norris på hans hemmaplan numera. På English National Opera i London. En av dem som är med och bestämmer om Broken, Call Girl eller Beasts of the Southern Wild kommer att vinna priser i tävlingsserien är Peter Fonda, som är ordförande i juryn. Lillebror till Jane Fonda och pappa till skådespelerskan Bridget Fonda, och som trots att han varit verksam som skådespelare, regissör och manusförfattare sedan tidigt 60-tal fortfarande förknippas mest med filmen Easy Rider från 1969, som han skrev manus till. Där han i sin roll som Captain America, en sorts mc-buren hippie, far runt på en fientlig amerikansk landsbygd tillsammans med sin lika flippade vapendragare Dennis Hopper, som förresten regisserade denna oväntade succéfilm. Karsten Thurfjell träffade en ungdomsidol på bästa humör. Veckans Bäst just nu-tipsar från Kinoredaktionen är Nina Asarnoj som bland annat arrangerat sin egen Nora Ephron-minneshögtid.
