Dan's first story today is the retelling of the moments that led to one young woman becoming a firm believer in the paranormal. She sees something… experiences something… that she just can't deny.  Then, we'll explore the lore behind a curse associated with New Hampshire and Maine's Saco River. Lynze brings three fan stories. The first is an intense reminder to steer clear of ouija boards. Then, a creepy but not too creepy telling of ghost that has seemed to linger in the same machine shop for thirty or so years. Then, to finish out the show, a really bothersome story about a possessed stuffy! Thank you for continuing to send in your stories, Creeps and Peepers! Please keep doing so!!Send them to mystory@scaredtodeathpodcast.comSend everything else to info@scaredtodeathpodcast.comWant to be a Patron? In this chilling episode, we dive into one of Maine's most enduring legends—the Curse of the Saco River. What began as a tragic encounter between Native Americans and early settlers became an eerie legacy that has haunted the waters of the Saco River for centuries. Legend has it that a grieving chief, enraged by the drowning of his son, cast a curse upon the river, condemning it to claim three lives every seven years. October 9, 2022 Maine's Wood Island, about 35 acres in size, is about two miles east of the entrance to the Saco River and less than a mile from the village known as Biddeford Pool. Congress appropriated $5,000 for a lighthouse on Wood Island in March 1806 and the light began service in 1808. The 1808 tower lasted until 1839, when a new 44-foot conical rubblestone tower was built. Keeper Thomas Orcutt's dog, Sailor, achieved widespread fame in the late 1800s and early 1900s because of his habit of pulling a rope with his teeth to sound the station's fog bell for every passing vessel. Wood Island Light Station, Maine. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont. In 2003, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation called Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse was formed to care for the light station. The group has been working for a full restoration of the lighthouse tower, keeper's house, and other buildings. In the summer season, boat tours are offered to the island and light station from Biddeford Pool. Keeper Thomas Orcutt's dog, Sailor, became famous for ringing the fog bell at Wood Island. Courtesy of the Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Three people are interviewed in this episode. Brad Coupe is one of the founders of Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse and served as its longtime chairperson, and George Bruns is the current chairperson. Richard Parsons serves as the group's historian and his new book, Wood Island Lighthouse: Stories from the Edge of the Sea, was published this year by the History Press. This episode is also available in a video version on the USLHS YouTube channel, with added video clips featuring co-host Sarah MacHugh at Wood Island. Wilderness therapy programs have evolved over the last twenty years to better help those with learning differences that impact mental health. Many young people who enroll in wilderness therapy programs have undiagnosed learning differences, including dyslexia, ADHD, etc., that need to be addressed for a healthy change to occur. In this episode, we dive into this topic with Sanford Shapiro, a learning specialist at Evoke, and Anson McNulty, Operations Director at Summit Achievement, who has dyslexia.   Sanford's Bio from the Evoke Website:  Sanford Shapiro, M.Ed Learning Specialist & Executive Consultant for Evoke Therapy Programs Sanford Shapiro is a learning disabilities specialist who is a highly sought after trainer and speaker, noted for his ability to bridge gaps between therapy and cognitive science. He has been interviewed on TV and in print for his insights into learning differences and social-emotional concerns. Education & Prior Work Experience Sanford has had an extensive career as a teacher-trainer, school director and special needs consultant. Sanford's knowledge is steeped in research and heart, born from personal and family experience as well as professional and clinical work. Known for his success with dyslexic learners, gifted students and those on the autism spectrum, Sanford's mission has always been grounded by sharp insights about the day-to-day lives of children and adults who learn differently. Strengths Sanford has lived abroad in Australia as well as the west coast and mountain ranges of the northwestern U.S. Sanford was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and lived and worked in Appalachia and New England. These diverse experiences have reinforced the idea that different cultures are to be celebrated and yet always finding the joy in common ground. Interests Sanford and his wife Debbie, parents of two young adult sons currently live in the beautiful UNESCO world heritage city of Cuenca, Ecuador. This is their current base of operations and life, and enjoy traveling back to the USA for friends, family, and work. Sanford is also the author of two children's books, A Light Within (2017) and A Light Within My Dyslexia.   Anson's Bio from the Summit Website:  Anson grew up in the West Village of New York City, where he got to experience the vast culture and diversity the city has to offer. As Anson is dyslexic, he went to a special boarding school in midstate New York where he started to develop his love for nature. Anson attended Unity College in Maine where he received a Bachelor's degree in Outdoor Recreation Administration. Anson first discovered Summit Achievement shortly after graduating college. He was drawn to this work as it allowed him to be outside and give back to youth. He experienced so much support in his journey through dyslexia, and Anson wanted the opportunity to provide that same support to young people. Anson has worked at Summit Achievement since 2002. Since starting out as a guide, he's held multiple roles at Summit. Currently, Anson serves as the Operations Director, as well as being a co-owner. Anson is responsible for hiring and training guide staff and for overseeing the general day-to-day operations of the program. In addition to his education at Unity College, Anson is also certified as Wilderness First Responder, CPR Instructor, and CPI (Crisis Prevention and Intervention) Instructor. When Anson is not at Summit, which isn't often, he likes to spend time with his family on the Saco River and enjoys the scenic roads of New Hampshire and Maine on his motorcycle.

I Want to Believe the Podcast – S3 E14 – The Haunting of Wood Island Lighthouse SEASON FINALE!! Welcome to the I Want to Believe podcast! What lurks on the shores and structures of Wood Island? We’ll let ya know… But first!! A quick reminder that ALL of our I Want to Believe social media & email are below. ALSO you can watch my documentary, Otherworldly Amor on Amazon Prime right now, DVDs are available. Alright, enough of all that... let’s talk about the the Haunting of Wood Island Lighthouse. Wood Island Light is an active lighthouse on the eastern edge of Wood Island in Saco Bay, on the southern coast of Maine. The light is just outside the entrance to Biddeford Pool and the end of the Saco River. The lighthouse was built in 1807 and is a 47-foot white tower of granite rubble. The light itself sits 71 feet above high water. Its automated beacon alternates between green and white every 10 seconds. Wood Island Light is Maine's second-oldest lighthouse (after Portland Head Light) and the nation's eleventh-oldest. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Wood Island Light Station on January 21, 1988. As it stands right now, the United States Coast Guard maintains the active beacon of the lighthouse, while The Friends of Wood Island Light, a non-profit organization, has assisted the Coast Guard by maintaining and restoring parts of the lighthouse and keepers’ dwellings which they now own. In Episode 85, Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger head to an island on the Saco River in Biddeford, Maine. This site is ground-zero for an alleged atrocity that took place in 1675, when three British sailors tossed a Sokokis Indian baby into the river to see if he could swim. The baby's pregnant mother dove in to try and save him, but also drowned in her frantic attempt. These British sailors didn't know it at the time, but this woman was the wife of Chief Squando, a powerful sorcerer. And the children were his. Squando placed a powerful curse on the river that gave rise to a legend and monster that took countless lives in the Saco River.

Catch the last days of winter at Fireside Sleigh Rides in North Conway, New Hampshire. Joining host Robin Milling are owners Jason and Heather Blakeney; brother and sister equestrian experts who took their love and expertise with horses hitching them to a romantic sleigh ride through snowy trails along the Saco River. Homeschooled, Jason tells Robin they would do their homework on horseback and both have degrees in equestrian studies so starting a business together where horses were involved was a natural progression. Arrive at a quaint log cabin office where hot apple Cider and hot chocolate awaits to take along on the ride. Jason takes out the sleigh led by Percherons named Freckles and Pretty Face with Freckles' foal in training leading the way or taking a break to nurse! Unnamed at the time, Jason jokes that patrons were all giving their ideas based on his shiny black coat such as Darth Vader for starters. They went with Pecos (like the river that flows through New Mexico and Texas). There is the private sleigh ride with room for four but two is always better for the full coziness of snuggling under warm wool blankets. Or if you want a party 'Big Red,' the Bob Sled can accommodate 10 adults and eight children. Both rides end up at a fire pit complete with sticks and marshmallows ready for toasting. Or bring your own chocolate and graham crackers and you can make S'mores. If you miss the snow, trail and wagon rides are available during the summer at their farm in Brownfield, Maine.
