Almost everyone shies away from advocacy as a way to make a difference. We donate to climate change organizations, but we don't meet with a member of Congress or write a letter to the editor. We donate to anti-hunger organizations, groups dedicated to racial justice, and many others, but we don't become advocates on those issues beyond signing an online petition or going to an occasional rally. Why? Because most of us see advocacy as too hard or too frustrating, too complicated, or too partisan, too dirty or too time-consuming, too ineffective or too costly. But what if that's all wrong? What if deep engagement dissolves discouragement and can actually bring joy? What if you can become an advocate for a cause you care about and feel fulfilled, not frustrated? And what if engaging as an advocate is essential to protecting our democracy? In this episode, your host Cindy Watson will be joined by Sam Daley-Harris, Sam Daley-Harris founded the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS in 1980, co-founded the Microcredit Summit Campaign in 1995, and founded Civic Courage in 2012. The 2024 edition of his book Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy was named an editor's pick by Publisher's Weekly BookLife. There's an old Joke:What's the difference between ignorance and apathy? The answer: I don't know and I don't care. That pretty much sums up the way many of us feel right now. This podcast was recorded in mid- February, 2025 about a month after the inauguration of Donald Trump. In the few short weeks of his second term as president, he has fundamentally changed most of which we older adults have long considered the basis of our democracy - freedom of the press, birthright citizenship and three equal branches of government. He is attempting to cut off aid to foreign countries, drastically alter our concerns about climate change, pardon convicted insurgents , more than decimate the FBI and CIA, change the way we approach public health concerns, annex foreign countries, allow a select group of billionaires to make drastic changes to the way our government works and even wage war on paper straws. We re frustrated about our seeming lack of ability to do anything about it and to make our voices heard. So I invited Sam Daley-Harris, author of "Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational advocacy" to help us learn how to make a difference.Throughout the last three years, Specifically for Seniors has attempted to bring conversations of interest, importance and just plain fun to you, our listeners. We have talked with artists, politicians, authors, physicians, historians, journalists, comedians, biologists, retirement experts, political activists and other podcasters. But in our more than 90 podcasts, we have never become actively involved in attempting to change our world. The current president and his sycophants, however, have forced Specifically for Seniors to change direction. We older adults must make our voices heard to create a better life for ourselves, our children, grandchildren and beyond.Specifically for Seniors hereby issues call to action, urging older adults to accept our responsibility as advocates to work toward transformational change in our communities, government , our world and in ourselves Important Links:Sign Up to Stay in Touch or Learn MoreReclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational AdvocacyWhitehouse Comment LineIndivisibleMoms Demand Action Citizen's Climate LobbyFriends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL)RESULTS.org

Building relationships with elected officials is important for your organization. In 1980, Sam Daley-Harris founded the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS and its sister organization RESULTS Educational Fund. In 1990, he organized the World Summit for Children Candlelight Vigils. In 1994 the first edition of Reclaiming Our Democracy: Healing the Break between People and Government was released. The 30th anniversary edition will be released in 2024. In 1995, Sam founded the Microcredit Summit Campaign along with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus and FINCA founder John Hatch. In 2012, Sam founded Civic Courage. Civic Courage helps NGOs train their members to create champions in Congress and the media for their cause. Sam's first client was Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL). In 2019 CCL volunteers in the US and Canada had 4,305 letters to the editor, op-eds and editorials published (up from 65 in 2010), and had 1,700 meetings with members of Congress, Parliament or their staff (up from 106 in 2010). In episode 487 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Sam left Florida State University and returned to the University of Miami, why it's so important for you to share your own story and for others to share theirs, how you can create champions in Congress and in the media, how we can go back to compromise and collaboration in politics, how we can turn today's youth into engaged voters, how we work with the media for better PR, how we can build better relationships with elected officials, and how we can get transformational advocacy with commitments. Activist, author, and nonprofit founder Sam Daley-Harris has been using and training people on transformational advocacy for almost 50 years and is optimistic about America's future. “With transformational advocacy, you're trained, encouraged, and succeed at doing things as an advocate you never thought you could do, like meeting with a member of Congress and bringing them on board to your issue,” he explains. Advocates he works with are making big changes on issues like hunger and climate change. “I'm optimistic because I have my eye on volunteers and what volunteers are doing. If I had my eye on the news, I would be pessimistic.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If, as Sam Daley-Harris believes, “cynicism is obedience”, then active citizenship is a form of rebellion. That seems to be the argument in both the 2024 edition of Daley-Harris' RECLAIMING OUR DEMOCRACY and in our discussion today about how to resurrect American democracy in 2024. But what about the role of leadership in transforming America? And why would anyone invest all their spare time in trying to revive a sclerotic system that has thrown up the Biden-Trump rematch in 2024?Sam Daley-Harris is the founder and president of RESULTS, an international citizens's lobby dedicated to creating the political will to end hunger and poverty. Daley-Harris is the author of the book Reclaiming Democracy: Healing the Break Between People and Government, recently reissued to commemorate its 20th anniversary. In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, a study by Pew Research highlights a concerning trend among Americans: nearly two-thirds feel exhausted, 55% express anger, and a mere 10% report feeling hopeful about politics. Our guest Sam Daley-Harris believes we need advocacy organizations to train individuals to take bold actions — the sort that have an impact and leave volunteers feeling empowered and transformed. Daley-Harris is the founder of the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS in 1980 and Civic Courage in 2012. Jimmy Carter hailed the first edition of his book, "Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy," as a “roadmap” for global involvement in shaping a better future. Kirkus Reviews praises the updated 2024 edition as "A handbook for aspiring activists that readers will find to be both inspiring and practical." A conversation to kick off election year, Daley-Harris suggests how to head off despair, and Laura shares some closing comments on citizenship and spaceships. American democracy is under attack in 2024. Last week I talked with SAM DALEY-HARRIS about the life-tested lessons in his book RECLAIMING OUR DEMOCRACY: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy. I recommend the book and the episode. I follow this week with my 2017 conversation with FRANCES MOORE LAPPE and ADAM EICHEN. LAPPE, who published Diet For A Small Planet over 50 years ago and whose work since has consistently updated the best the 60's had to offer, and EICHEN, who graduated from college in 2015, met on a pro-democracy march. They co-authored DARING DEMOCRACY: Igniting Power, Meaning, and Connection for the America We Want - their report on pro-democracy movements near the end of Trump's first year in office.

We know we make a difference in our family, and we make a difference on our block. And yes, we make a difference in our community. But I say that when we look to our state and our nation and our world, people don't see the difference they make. It's just crystal clear to me. I'm in on the joke that it's not accurate that we don't make a difference. We do. I just see it in a crystal clear way.Sam Daley-Harris has updated his seminal work, Reclaiming Our Democracy, Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy. Originally written decades ago, it reflected the success of the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS. Since then, it has helped guide that effort.RESULTS has earned respect for being a critical piece in lobbying on behalf of the global population of people living in or near extreme poverty. The result has been a 66 percent reduction in infant mortality, saving tens of millions of lives.“This 66 percent decline wasn't only RESULTS, but when it comes to the advocacy, RESULTS was a central leader in the US and then Britain and Canada and Australia and elsewhere in this tremendous progress that volunteers had a real hand in,” Sam says. Why update the book? The answer seems simple to anyone whose read a newspaper in the past decade. Sam matter-of-factly summarizes the context, saying, “Our democracy is in trouble.” He adds, “We need to really get our act together.”Sam explains the meaning of the book's cover image, saying, “We're saying that there's a missing piece in this puzzle, and the missing piece is us.”To do this work on behalf of those living in poverty, Sam deploys a superpower he describes as being in on the joke that what you do to change the world doesn't matter–because it does.AI Episode Summary1. Devin Thorpe, the host of the Superpowers for Good show, introduces his guest, Sam Daley-Harris, an influential figure in social change, the author of Reclaiming Our Democracy, and the founder of RESULTS, an anti-poverty lobby.2. Sam shares his origin story, beginning with a background in music and two impactful deaths that occurred during his high school and college graduations, leading him to ponder his life's purpose.3. His journey shifted when he attended a presentation on ending world hunger organized by The Hunger Project, which inspired him to get involved after realizing hunger solutions existed, but people were not acting on them.4. Sam's advocacy work started with educating high school students about political will and engaging citizenship, subsequently creating RESULTS based on the disconnect he saw between public awareness and political action.5. RESULTS focuses on child survival issues and has been a significant influence in reducing the global child death rate by 66% over the past 40 years through continuous lobbying and advocacy.6. A personal story of success is recounted, where Sam received written gratitude from Jim Grant, the then-head of UNICEF, for the advocacy work RESULTS volunteers did to increase the Child Survival Fund.7. Sam details the reasons for updating his book "Reclaiming Our Democracy" in response to the current challenges faced by democracy and the public's eagerness for ideas on making a difference.8. The puzzle piece on the cover of his book symbolizes that the "missing piece" in democracy is the citizens themselves, awakening to their power to make a difference.9. Sam's superpower, "being in on the joke," refers to his awareness and conviction that individuals do have power and can make a significant impact on state, national, and global issues despite common skepticism.10. The book Reclaiming Our Democracy provides guidance on transformational advocacy, highlighting the importance of organizational enrollment and community building, skill development, and enabling individuals to experience breakthroughs in advocacy. If you want to help reclaim our democracy, please share this post! How to Develop Knowing We Can Change the World As a SuperpowerSam cleverly describes his superpower, knowing that we can change the world, as being in the joke. He explains, “You do make a difference. Don't believe all that stuff that you read or you think that you don't.”Sam shared an impressive example of how volunteers organized using the principles of his book to make a big difference in the U.S. Federal budget for international aid.In 2019, the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria had saved 38 million lives since its inception in 2002 to 2019. It was up for a three-year replenishment, and President Trump called for a 29 percent cut to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Now, most people would go, “Well, what can you do? You can't fight city hall. President's calling for…” No, no, no, no! RESULTS volunteers–there were others, but results volunteers led in getting hundreds of Republicans and Democrats to sign letters to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, to the leaders of the appropriating subcommittees in the House and Senate to co-sponsor resolutions, all in support of the full funding for the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria. At the end of that year, 2019, two Republicans and two Democrats stood on a stage in Lyon, France, at the Global Fund replenishment and announced that the US Congress would increase the Global Fund by 16 percent and by the end of the year, the president, President Trump signed into law legislation that didn't cut it by 29 percent but increased the Global Fund by 16 percent. That incredible achievement alone will save millions from the triple-health threat fought by The Global Fund.By following Sam's example–and the guidance in his book–you can learn to make your confidence in knowing we can change the world into a superpower that will allow you to do more good.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You may have signed a petition online, but what about actually meeting in-person with your representative to advocate for a public policy change? Sam Daley-Harris founded Results, a citizen lobby committed to creating the political will to end hunger and the worst aspects of poverty. He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss effective strategies for advocating for change that won't leave you frustrated by the process. His book is “Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy.”
We must up our game in 2024. We sign petitions and make donations, but how many meet with a Congressperson or write a letter to the editor? SAM DALEY-HARRIS, founder of anti-poverty lobby RESULTS and Civic Courage, has a new 2024 edition of RECLAIMING OUR DEMOCRACY: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy. His message: Find and get involved this year with a group that offers a rich structure of support - that coaches you, empowers you, emboldens you, and educates you. America's political and cultural climates are tense to say the least. And if you look at polls and surveys and interviews over the past year, it seems that 2023 was an especially fiery time in the political realm. So going forward, what will 2024 bring? Sam Daley-Harris says unity and peace are possible -- or at least rational debate and discussion -- and so is change for society's good. And he wuld know. He wrote the book on it, called "Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Activity."

Here we explore an optimistic and realistic look at how we can and must restore the health of our atmosphere to levels that support all life on this planet. Fiekowsky has extensively researched and come up with specific, concrete steps we can take that can bring about a restoration of the kind of healthy climate humankind has flourished under for 10,000 years. Peter Fiekowsky is an MIT educated physicist and engineer, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and a social innovator. He has worked at NASA and the Fairchild/Schlumberger Artificial Intelligence Lab in Palo Alto, California and has taught at MIT. He holds 27 patents and was instrumental in launching the Foundation for Climate Restoration whose purpose is to work with top scientists, innovators, policymakers, and others to create the understanding and policy needed to further climate restoration. He is co-author with Carole Douglis of Climate Restoration: The Only Future That Will Sustain the Human Race (Rivertown Books 2022).Interview Date: 9/25/2022 Tags: Peter Fiekowsky, citizens' advocacy organization Results, immunization program, Muhammad Yunus, microlending, hunger project, Sam Daley-Harris, Blue Planet Systems, ocean restoration, synthetic limestone, planetary population, CO2, Ecology/Nature/Environment, Science
How do you empower citizens to effectively engage with their government to solve big problems? We talk this month to the person who literally wrote the book on this topic, Sam Daley-Harris. He's the founder and CEO of Civic Courage, and he'll share some of the successes he's seen with the organizations he's coached. One of those is Citizens' Climate Lobby. In 1980, Sam founded RESULTS, a grassroots advocacy organization working to end hunger and poverty. He is the author of Reclaiming Our Democracy: Healing the Break Between People and Government, which tells the stories of life-changing moments people had in discovering their power to make a difference. In the aftermath of the midterm elections, Sam will also explore the lessons we can apply to our climate advocacy. Devin: What is your superpower? Peter: My superpower is this: I did a seminar workshop 20 years ago. On my wall in my office, it says, “My mission in life is to leave a world that we’re proud of to our children.”Author Peter Fiekowsky, an MIT-trained physicist, activist and Silicon Valley entrepreneur, has a plan to restore the climate to health by 2050—forget merely meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. For context, he points out correctly that meeting the Paris targets is both challenging and only better than not meeting those thresholds. By achieving carbon neutrality in 2050, the world would no longer be contributing to global warming. Until then, however, the atmospheric carbon would continue to rise along with average global temperatures. The only thing that makes that scenario acceptable is that not doing so could be much worse. He argues that a path for complete climate restoration is open to us now. He puts forward the plan in his book Climate Restoration: The Only Future That Will Sustain the Human Race. There are two shocking things about his plan. First, it can be implemented fully by the end of this decade. Second, we can do it cheaply; his budget is 1/1000 or three orders of magnitude smaller than conventional plans for meeting the Paris Agreement. Those shocking facts make it easier to ignore him because his plan sounds too good to be true. Today, I’m suggesting only that we pause long enough to fully consider the possibility that we could do much better than merely achieve climate mediocrity over the next three decades. In his book, Peter sets out the “Big Four” elements of his plan to offset carbon emissions well before 2050, allowing us to return atmospheric carbon to pre-industrial levels by that time. While we spoke about each of the four actions in our conversation, which I hope you’ll watch or listen to, I’ll quote from his book here to capture the full benefit of written clarity. The Big Four include:Synthetic limestone manufacture. Nature has permanently stored 99 percent of Earth’s carbon in the form of limestone. The calcium carbonate made by shellfish and corals eventually sinks to the seafloor, where it becomes limestone. This has been happening for over a billion years. Recently engineers have learned to mimic the chemistry that oysters, mussels, and corals perfected long ago. Companies in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia have developed ways to use captured CO2 to produce synthetic limestone, high-quality rock that can substitute for the aggregate from quarries that is now used to make roadbeds and concrete.Seaweed permaculture. Kelp and other seaweeds, called macro-algae, can grow as much as two or three feet a day, swiftly building their tissues from sunlight and CO2. Kelp forests once lined many of the Earth’s coastlines, pulling down more CO2, acre for acre, than the rainforests of the Amazon, while also providing shelter for fish and other sea creatures. When the seaweed dies in the course of its natural life cycle, it tends to sink. In the right circumstances, it takes the carbon it contains to the ocean depths, sequestering it far from the atmosphere for hundreds or thousands of years.Ocean iron fertilization (OIF), also called ocean pasture restoration (OPR). OIF mimics in a controlled fashion the process that cooled the Earth 10 times in the last million years during the lead-up to ice ages. This powerful approach utilizes nature’s fastest large-scale carbon removal pathway and can be scaled up rapidly, with important benefits to ocean and fishery health while “farming” only about two percent of the ocean’s area.Acceleration of natural methane oxidation. With the ability to remove CO2 by increasing two kinds of ocean photosynthesis as well as by manufacturing rock, we’re all set to restore the climate, right? Not quite. There’s one more challenge to solve, which has to do with the melting Arctic. Methane is the main component in the natural gas you may use for cooking or heating. It was produced in the ancient vegetation that turned into coal and oil, and it’s produced today when vegetation decays in wetlands. Methane has a short half-life in the atmosphere about eight years, compared to a millennium for CO2. But a ton of methane causes about 120 times more warming than a ton of CO2.I’m going to resist the temptation to attempt to further explain his Big Four. It suffices to say that he’s thought this through carefully and is asking for scrutiny before moving toward full implementation.Peter’s clearly defined mission to leave a world we’re proud of to our children is the superpower that defines his work.Never miss an episode. Subscribe! How to Develop Your Mission As a SuperpowerPeter highlights a past success as evidence of the value of focusing on our collective genetic desire to protect our genes. Over the course of a decade, working with Results, the nonprofit advocacy organization founded by Sam Daley-Harris, he helped UNICEF gain funding to increase child immunization rates from 8 percent to 85 percent, saving millions of children. That kind of success is extraordinary. Behind that victory was an exercise in defining a personal mission. His hangs on the office wall and says, “My mission in life is to leave a world that we’re proud of to our children.”Interestingly, he argues that it isn’t unique. Instead, he makes the case that our genes drive us all to what’s right for our descendants. Our DNA is designed to keep our DNA line alive across generations. And the way it does it is it manages our emotions a little bit. We enjoy those things which are good for our community and for society. So having very interesting interviews like this—you and I are smiling broadly. We love it—singing in the choir, making dinner for your family, making dinner for your block, making dinner at the church or the synagogue. All those things make us very happy. And you say, Why? Well, because our DNA figured out that contributing to the community—we want to make individuals be happy when they do it so they do it more.By following Peter’s example and tapping into your innate desire to serve the community, you can make your mission a superpower for good. When you purchase a book after clicking a link from this post, we may earn an affiliate commission. For nearly 25 years, the Child Tax Credit has helped eligible American families with the cost of raising children. In 2021, the American Rescue Plan included significant changes to the credit: the amount per child was increased, 26 million more children were made eligible for the benefit, and the credit became a monthly cash payment as opposed to an annual lump sum. The impact of these changes are profound with experts saying that childhood poverty could be cut in half. In this final episode of Add Passion and Stir's Child Tax Credit series, we explore the impact the credit is having on families and it's role in reducing child poverty in America. Share Our Strength's Billy Shore speaks with Kim Ford, CEO of Washington, DC-based Martha's Table and Cailyn Thomas, Family Engagement Specialist at Martha's Table. For Kim, the power of the credit's direct monthly cash payments: “It's very different when you respect someone to the point where you say, ‘this is your money and you make your own decision with it.'” We also hear from Sam Daley-Harris, an activist and founder of the international citizens' lobby RESULTS, about the role everyone has in advocating for an extension of the credit. As Sam describes it, “Transformational advocacy is where the advocate grows and sees themselves in a new light, sees themselves in a way they never imagined possible, sees themselves as a community leader.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Devin: What is your superpower?Sam: What is my superpower?I think it's that I'm in on the joke. I actually know that people can make a difference, and I keep my eye on that ball.I look at the news, and I get a little depressed by the news. But I look at what the grassroots groups I am working with are doing, and I get excited. Last year [President Trump] called for a 31 percent cut to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria, which over the last 17 years, along with its partners, had saved 27 million lives. Results volunteers got 162 Republicans and Democrats to sign one letter to the top appropriators on the subcommittee that appropriates it saying, no, don't cut it. The appropriations subcommittee has nine people on it. When those nine subcommittee members get a letter signed by 162 [of their Congressional colleagues] saying pay attention to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, [it matters]. So I pay attention to those volunteers who are getting 162 Republicans and Democrats to say no, don't cut the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. When I look at the Citizens' Climate Lobby, last year, they had enrolled 45 Republicans and 45 Democrats in the House Climate Solutions caucus when four years ago you couldn't get one Republican to put their name on anything with the word climate in the title. How exciting does that get about breakthroughs in new territory! So, I'm in on the joke that people think, somebody thinks, everybody thinks we can't make a difference [on big issues]. I know that we can. And I keep my eye on the ball [and on all of those who are making a difference.] That really feeds me.You can watch the full interview with Sam here: sam.s4g.biz.Sam Daley-Harris may be the most impactful person you’ve never heard of. He runs with the likes of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus. Trained as a musician, Sam founded RESULTS, a leading anti-poverty lobby that deserves credit for dramatically reducing child mortality globally over the past 40 years. He first began asking questions about his purpose when a friend died in 1964. He was further shaken by the assassination of Robert Kennedy in 1968, again causing him to ponder the question of his purpose. In 1977, he attended a presentation on ending world hunger. Up to that point, he had assumed that if ending world hunger were possible, it would have happened. So, clearly, it wasn’t. He learned some unsurprising facts that changed his thinking. There is no mystery to growing or distributing food. The problem was simply creating the will to end hunger. The event planted a seed of confidence—hope—that collective action could change things.Sam jumped in with both feet. Classroom by classroom, he spoke to 7,000 high school students about fighting global hunger. In every presentation, he asked the students if they could name their congressional representative. Only 3 percent could! From this disappointment, he saw an opportunity.Because so few people are aware of and are engaging with their representatives in Washington, he figured out that they could make a big difference by organizing a small group of people. He saw that a systematic approach could change policies that would save lives. The approach included writing letters to the editor and opinion pieces for newspapers to shape public opinion and directly lobbying members of Congress through letters, phone calls and personal visits. In 1980, he founded RESULTS to do just that. In those 41 years, the number of children dying from hunger and preventable disease has dropped from 41,000 to 14,000 per day. There is still work to do, but millions of people are alive today because governments, responding to pressure from citizens, have funded efforts to end hunger.Along the way, Sam’s confidence in the power of collective action, the unstoppable force of a citizen-led campaign for change, became absolute. In 2007, he helped Marshall Saunders, founder of Citizens' Climate Lobby, organize a parallel effort for fighting climate change. Muhammad Yunus now sits on the board. Today, the organization boasts over 180,000 members in 590 groups around the world. Sam is confident that this effort will help to reverse climate change. How to Develop Confidence in Collective Action as a SuperpowerLet’s not belabor a simple plan. When I spoke with Sam for this book, he said the best way to gain confidence in collective action is to participate and practice. Sam shared with me the story of Marshall Saunders’s first meeting with a member of Congress. Marshall was so nervous that he couldn’t remember what he had prepared to say. Now, it is routine. Citizens' Climate Lobby members, including Marshall, met with 1,800 members of Congress and their staff members in a single year. Practice makes progress and builds confidence.Sam notes that it is essential to join a group that will empower you as an advocate. Some organizations designed to lobby Congress use a different approach, focused on collecting money from donors to pay Washington lobbyists to push the agenda. Others, like RESULTS and Citizens’ Climate Lobby, empower and encourage their members to use their voices. When you join an empowering group, you will receive training on writing letters to the editor and OpEds that will get published. You’ll get coaching on writing letters to members of Congress that will get read. You’ll even have opportunities to join with your peers to visit the halls of Congress and meet with your representatives to make your case. As you experience this, you will gain confidence in the power of collective action to make a significant difference in the world. Dr. Scott Leckman is a dear friend, so yes, this is personal. If we are known by the company we keep, I certainly want to keep his company. Rotary connected us, specifically the Salt Lake Rotary Club where he is a past president. For the year ended June 30, 2019, Scott served as the district governor for the state of Utah. (District 5420 is, I believe, the only Rotary district to cover exactly one U.S. state.) He has been the district’s leading voice on polio eradication for at least a decade, often leading immunization trips to India. It turns out, Rotary is just the tip of Scott’s iceberg. He served for years on the international nonprofit Results board with Mohammed Yunus and Sam Daley-Harris fighting extreme poverty globally. He served as the Chairman for a year. He presently serves as the Chairman of the board for Citizens’ Climate Education, the 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit affiliate of the 501(c)(4) advocacy organization Citizens’ Climate Lobby. The organizations jointly work toward finding common ground in the political arguments around climate change. He also helped to found the Health Access Project, an effort to organize doctors to provide volunteer care for low-income, uninsured people living in Salt Lake County. To date, the organization has provided more than $20 million of free medical care. There is more but suffice it to say, Scott is an extraordinary humanitarian. It is my honor to call him a friend and a privilege to share his story with you. Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin.
Just how powerful and influential is grassroots advocacy? Our guest this month, Sam Daley-Harris, will share examples of organized citizen lobbying that had a major impact on national policies and priorities. Sam is the founder and CEO of Civic Courage, a non-profit that coaches organizations to improve the effectiveness of their advocacy work. In 1980, he founded RESULTS, an organization working to end hunger and poverty, which later became the model for Citizens’ Climate Lobby. Sam Daley-Harris, author of the book, Reclaiming Our Democracy, helped develop a model of advocacy that empowered citizens to connect directly with lawmakers. This model has helped shape organizations like Citizens Climate Lobby and the Friends Council for National Legislation. Sam reveals some of the sources for his own inspiration. His parents--their faith and public witness--along with insights he gained from his twelve years playing in the Miami Philharmonic orchestra directly contributed to his success in addressing world hungry, promoting micro-loans for the poor, and in training climate advocates. Sam highlights the important roles advocates play in taking on climate change. Another climate advocate, Glen Retief, had the opportunity to take on the rebel role during the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa. He stood up to the racist policies of his government, but not as a rebel. Instead, he took on the role of advocate--lobbying, writing letters, and going to meetings. You will hear about the seemingly impossible task to turn his country around and the extraordinary lessons he learned that he now applies to his work in promoting solutions to climate change. Glen is the author of the Lambda Awarding winning book, The Jack Bank--A Memoir of a South African Childhood. Art House Elizabeth Doud takes on the role of Siren Jones in her one-person performance, The Mermaid Tear Factory. Based in Miami, Florida, she has been a catalyst to engage other artists in conversations around climate change. Each year she helps organize Climakaze Miami. Elizabeth explains why she sees Miami as the city of the future--both with its international changing demographics and the many ways climate change is reshaping the city. She also shares why artists need to break away from telling the story of climate science and instead dig deep into the hard emotions around climate change. Puzzler Question You attended one of the recent student walk-out demonstrations. While there you spoke to a parent, Claire. Claire’s daughter was a protest organizer. Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. For decades, Sam Daley-Harris has quietly gone about changing the world. Much of the global success in eradicating extreme poverty can be credited in part to him and his leadership at RESULTS. His secret has been to train and empower ordinary citizens to be effective activists. He helps organizations learn the secrets to empowering a group’s membership to act independently and effectively to drive change. This requires organizations to train their membership with the skills they need and at the same time to step back and allow the membership to act on their behalf--even when members might muddle the message. His approach has proven effective not only with RESULTS on poverty but also with the Citizens Climate Lobby. Today, Sam is focused on a new organization called Civic Courage, teaching other organizations how to empower their members.
