It's an easy way to support our work.Devin: What is your superpower?Sam: My superpower is that I'm in on the joke, and I want to say it this way. We know we make a difference in our family, and we make a difference on our block. And yes, we make a difference in our community. But I say that when we look to our state and our nation and our world, people don't see the difference they make. It's just crystal clear to me. I'm in on the joke that it's not accurate that we don't make a difference. We do. I just see it in a crystal clear way.Sam Daley-Harris has updated his seminal work, Reclaiming Our Democracy, Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy. Originally written decades ago, it reflected the success of the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS. Since then, it has helped guide that effort.RESULTS has earned respect for being a critical piece in lobbying on behalf of the global population of people living in or near extreme poverty. The result has been a 66 percent reduction in infant mortality, saving tens of millions of lives.“This 66 percent decline wasn't only RESULTS, but when it comes to the advocacy, RESULTS was a central leader in the US and then Britain and Canada and Australia and elsewhere in this tremendous progress that volunteers had a real hand in,” Sam says. Why update the book? The answer seems simple to anyone whose read a newspaper in the past decade. Sam matter-of-factly summarizes the context, saying, “Our democracy is in trouble.” He adds, “We need to really get our act together.”Sam explains the meaning of the book's cover image, saying, “We're saying that there's a missing piece in this puzzle, and the missing piece is us.”To do this work on behalf of those living in poverty, Sam deploys a superpower he describes as being in on the joke that what you do to change the world doesn't matter–because it does.AI Episode Summary1. Devin Thorpe, the host of the Superpowers for Good show, introduces his guest, Sam Daley-Harris, an influential figure in social change, the author of Reclaiming Our Democracy, and the founder of RESULTS, an anti-poverty lobby.2. Sam shares his origin story, beginning with a background in music and two impactful deaths that occurred during his high school and college graduations, leading him to ponder his life's purpose.3. His journey shifted when he attended a presentation on ending world hunger organized by The Hunger Project, which inspired him to get involved after realizing hunger solutions existed, but people were not acting on them.4. Sam's advocacy work started with educating high school students about political will and engaging citizenship, subsequently creating RESULTS based on the disconnect he saw between public awareness and political action.5. RESULTS focuses on child survival issues and has been a significant influence in reducing the global child death rate by 66% over the past 40 years through continuous lobbying and advocacy.6. A personal story of success is recounted, where Sam received written gratitude from Jim Grant, the then-head of UNICEF, for the advocacy work RESULTS volunteers did to increase the Child Survival Fund.7. Sam details the reasons for updating his book "Reclaiming Our Democracy" in response to the current challenges faced by democracy and the public's eagerness for ideas on making a difference.8. The puzzle piece on the cover of his book symbolizes that the "missing piece" in democracy is the citizens themselves, awakening to their power to make a difference.9. Sam's superpower, "being in on the joke," refers to his awareness and conviction that individuals do have power and can make a significant impact on state, national, and global issues despite common skepticism.10. The book Reclaiming Our Democracy provides guidance on transformational advocacy, highlighting the importance of organizational enrollment and community building, skill development, and enabling individuals to experience breakthroughs in advocacy. If you want to help reclaim our democracy, please share this post! How to Develop Knowing We Can Change the World As a SuperpowerSam cleverly describes his superpower, knowing that we can change the world, as being in the joke. He explains, “You do make a difference. Don't believe all that stuff that you read or you think that you don't.”Sam shared an impressive example of how volunteers organized using the principles of his book to make a big difference in the U.S. Federal budget for international aid.In 2019, the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria had saved 38 million lives since its inception in 2002 to 2019. It was up for a three-year replenishment, and President Trump called for a 29 percent cut to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Now, most people would go, “Well, what can you do? You can't fight city hall. President's calling for…” No, no, no, no! RESULTS volunteers–there were others, but results volunteers led in getting hundreds of Republicans and Democrats to sign letters to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, to the leaders of the appropriating subcommittees in the House and Senate to co-sponsor resolutions, all in support of the full funding for the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria. At the end of that year, 2019, two Republicans and two Democrats stood on a stage in Lyon, France, at the Global Fund replenishment and announced that the US Congress would increase the Global Fund by 16 percent and by the end of the year, the president, President Trump signed into law legislation that didn't cut it by 29 percent but increased the Global Fund by 16 percent. That incredible achievement alone will save millions from the triple-health threat fought by The Global Fund.By following Sam's example–and the guidance in his book–you can learn to make your confidence in knowing we can change the world into a superpower that will allow you to do more good.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileSam Daley-Harris (he/him):Founder and Senior Partner, Civic CourageAbout Civic Courage: Civic Courage trains nonprofit organizations to create structures of support that allow their members to make a profound difference as advocates on issues they care about. Website: civiccourage.org and reclaimingourdemocracy.comX/Twitter Handle: @civiccourageBiographical Information: After a career in music, Sam Daley-Harris founded the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS in 1980, co-founded the Microcredit Summit Campaign with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus and FINCA founder John Hatch, and founded Civic Courage in 2012.  The completely revised and updated edition of Sam's book, Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen's Guide to Transformational Advocacy, will be released on January 9, 2024.  Publisher's Weekly BookLife has made it an “Editor's Pick” and called it “[A] rousing guide to…enacting change in cynical times.”  Kirkus Reviews has said, “Overall, the author's analysis of effective action is as persuasive as it is accessible, and his call to democratic participation is inspiring.”  X/Twitter Handle: http://twitter.com/samdaleyharrisPersonal Facebook Profile: facebook.com/sam.daleyharris/Linkedin: linkedin.com/in/sam-daley-harrisSuperpowers for Good is a reader-supported publication. But this week Russia said if its demands are not met, it sees no prospect for extending the deal beyond the middle of July. Ukraine is a major grain exporter, accounting for 10% of the world's supply of wheat, 15% of the corn market, and 13% of world barley. The charity The Hunger Project says if the grain deal fails it will put millions of people at risk of severe hunger or famine. We as people tend to think of learning and training and preparing, so that…we can commit to something truly big and worthy. A grand purpose. My guest today argues, in the most compassionate way possible, we have it backwards, and that the greatest people ever known simply committed to something they believed in, and the journey within it is what made them great. It crafted and honed them. The challenge and trials and triumphs along the way is what refined them. Then the charge is not to prepare to commit, but to commit now, and become what the commitment requires, along the way. My guest is Lynne Twist, a recognized global visionary and legendary humanitarian. Lynne wowed the world with her first book, The Soul of Money, but I have her on the show for her brand new book releasing currently, "Living a Committed Life: Finding Freedom and Fulfillment in a Purpose Larger Than Yourself.” That's what caught me, this 180 look at making big commitments. That again, the greats, like Ghandi, didn't prepare to change the world. They just committed to it and the effort formed them into the people big enough to do it.  Lynne's story is the same, as her journey began when she heard about the The Hunger Project where their goal was to end world hunger, and knew she was supposed to devote her life to it. She spent a decade there and has influenced more people through more humanitarian efforts than nearly anyone. Lynne has been an advisor to the Desmond Tutu Foundation. The United Nations honored her with a “Woman of Distinction” award. From working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta to the refugee camps in Ethiopia and the threatened rainforests of the Amazon, Lynne's on-the-ground work has brought her a deep understanding of the social tapestry of the world and the historical landscape of the times we are living in. Over the past 40 years Lynne has worked with over 100,000 people in 50 countries in the arenas of fundraising with integrity, conscious philanthropy, strategic visioning and having a healthy relationship with money. Reimagining Climate Action and Achieving the SDGs: Our Individual and Collective Work   Side Event to UNGA 77 and Climate Week Panel and Reception Hosted by Church World Service (CWS) Monday, 19 September 2022 4 - 7 PM EDT Location: Church Center of the UN New York, NY   About   For fourteen years, Climate Week has “brought together the most influential leaders in climate action from business, government, and the climate community” at the same time as the UN General Assembly High-level meetings. Climate Week aims to increase ambition and accelerate action for urgent climate action, and the timing is more critical during UNGA this year as the world experiences more frequent and severe climate shocks affecting all people, but most disproportionately for the most vulnerable (eg. food insecure, impoverished, indigenous persons, women, smallholder farmers). Climate change is also promulgating unrest and forced displacement; there are more displaced persons around the world now than ever before in recorded human history.    Most people in low and middle income countries are people of faith, and the role of places and leaders of worship, communities and individual action will only continue to be critical to achieve the SDGs. As a faith-based civil society organization in consultative status with the UN, CWS is uniquely positioned to engage with delegates and high-level attendees of UNGA regarding critical matters around the world's progress - or lack thereof - toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.   This side event served as a follow-up to CWS' side event during the 2022 High Level Political Forum entitled Reimagining Our World and Future Together: an integral approach towards sustainable development. In a panel discussion between the Netherlands, UNDP, Seattle University, MPOWERD and CWS, speakers addressed systemic gaps and the value of improving social safety nets and partnerships (SDG 17) to ensure resilience - especially among the most vulnerable - and the achievement of the SDGs. Speakers were asked to consider the role of “Inner Development Goals” (IDGs), or the capabilities, qualities and skills within each person.    The event featured a panel discussion and interactive dialogue with the audience. We would like to thank the audience for their participation and apologize that this summary podcast doesn't do total justice to the richness of the conversations that took place during the session.   Panelists (Moderator) Maurice A. The latter is said to have been named the godfather of business and has been responsible for teaching some of the world's greatest business minds including Tony Robbins, Robert Kiyosaki and Jack Canfield through the Money & You program he created together with Bobbi DePorter.  And Doria then partnered Robert Kiyosaki for 9 years to bring the program to Asia Pacific.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Originally a Court Reporter working in Los Angeles and Hawaii, Dame Doria had an epiphany in 1976 which set her on a very different path.  Doria, after involvement in The Hunger Project realised that her life purpose was to work towards ending world hunger and poverty on a global scale.  The transformational training industry is currently worth about 100 billion a year, including all of the different facets contained within, and Doria is a key representational figure for that industry. The core of what Excellerated Business Schools and Money & You teaches helps its graduates to create a supportive economic system around their life purpose. Doria was knighted as Dame of Honor by The Sovereign Order of the Orthodox Order of St. John – Russian Grand Priory for her lifelong service to humanity. She was later advanced to Dame Commander of Grace, and then to Chancellor of the California Priory of the Order for her contribution to the growth of the Order.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I was very blessed. I attended the first business school for entrepreneurs of its kind in 1978, so the business school was created in 1978 and Money and You was launched in 1979, and that's the work that I originally inherited.' – Dame Doria  ‘That was when I had this sense that I had a job to do in the world and not be a party girl. Not that I was that much of a party girl but, you know, I just thought I'd spend a lot of money travelling, having fun and being a 26 year old!' – Dame Doria ‘We have a tremendous history in the industry but ultimately Marshall and Bobbi were the people that created that industry.' – Dame Doria ‘He just takes me to the most beautiful divine life that I have had. I just keep going more internal, and focusing more on love, and love and light, and letting go of everything that's fear based and anything that creates fear in other human beings.' – Dame Doria  ‘Why has your program influenced and impacted so many people who are well known like Tony Robbins and was it Jack Canfield as well?” – Helen. ‘And Mark Victor Hansen, Chicken Soup for the Soul, yeah.' – Dame Doria ‘The way that I was placed in the Universe was for me to “support and lead an organisation that was going to churn out social entrepreneurs that were going to go and do good work in the world.”' – Dame Doria ‘Together, as we, ourselves, transform and thrive, we will make sure that all of humanity does so as well and we will co-create a whole new world.' – Helen    ABOUT THE HOST HELEN LEE Founder & Principal Coach of Lee Heiss Coaching, Helen Lee coached thousands of clients worldwide and multinationals in Asia-Pacific in the last three decades. We all need a purpose to help us feel fulfilled, but Lynne Twist, founder of the institute ‘The Soul of Money', author of Soul of Money, and co-founder of the Pachamama Alliance, has made a bigger commitment. She wants to transform the conditions of life on this planet. Lynne isn't just a global visionary, she's actively working toward alleviating world hunger, as well as supporting social justice and environmental sustainability. “With the climate crisis it's the Mother speaking very convincingly: ‘you're off course, I'm giving you feedback, big, big, powerful feedback. It's happening for you, not to you, it's humbling you. You need to change course'.”In this latest episode of Into The Magic Shop, Lynne shares her incredible journey from developing her spirituality as a child, to winning the Stanford poetry contest, to becoming a pro-activist, and subsequently discovering EST (Erhard Seminar Training, later Landmark Forum) with Werner Erhard, before meeting Mother Theresa.“Whether people believe in God or not, when you saw Mother Teresa, you saw the largest definition of what we would call God. Not somebody in the sky somewhere, but the experience of God living within a human being.”Mother Theresa taught Lynne that money is called currency because it's a current, it's not designed to be accumulated. Money, like water, needs to flow, to purify, clean and grow. “The vicious cycle of wealth is challenging and intractable, and it has as much misery as the vicious cycle of poverty.”So, if you're looking to live a more purposeful life, download and listen to Lynne's story and let her inspire you to take action. On today's podcast: Why we are a manifestation of our past Why EST was transformational  Meeting Mother Theresa and working to end world hunger Why privilege is as brutal as poverty Why the pandemic and climate crisis are happening for us Links: The Soul of Money Institute and Lynne Twist Global Compassion Fellowship

Running a small business can be pretty challenging. Particularly over the last couple of years where uncertainty has run fairly rife, and we've all had to embrace the art of changing plans at the drop of a hat. Something that Christine Khor strongly believes is that if we are tapped into a strong sense of purpose, a compelling mission and vision or a why, we actually manage to push through the challenges more successfully. When we can inspire others with our purpose, we tackle these challenges with more support.  In this episode Christine and I talk about how as marketers, it's our role to communicate this purpose. And there's a few ways that we can do this, including strategically partnering with another organisation that aligns with your purpose. Hello F.I.R.E. Goddesses!  Welcome to Episode 63.  I am ecstatic to welcome my next guest, Sophie McLean. Sophie McLean's mission is to contribute to the creation of a new culture for humankind; or the shift from Homo Sapiens to Homo Spiritus, as Dr. David Hawkins so beautifully wrote. Born in Algeria, educated in Morocco and France, with a professional career in the USA and UK, Sophie has led an eventful life. She has been a helicopter pilot, a teacher, a designer, a relief worker, a war refugee, a CEO, and served as a United Nations representative on The Commission on the Status of Women's Hunger Project. She has been shot at, shipwrecked, and widowed. She has lived on a farm, a boat, a penthouse, and in an ashram. As a wisdom teacher, Sophie has spent decades leading transformational seminars to over 80,000 people around the world, of all ethnicities, ages, religions and social backgrounds – all engaged with the universal existential questions of “Who and what am I?” and “What is my life about?” Her seminar and podcast topics span both human and metaphysical dimensions – exposing and deconstructing the automatic ego, consciousness, freedom, love, stress, anxiety, fear, relationships, health, sex, money, ownership, leadership, spirituality, creation and evolution, the feminine and the masculine, responsibility, and making an effective, actionable difference in the world. Sophie engages people in a rigorous review of their life and a systematic questioning of their conclusions on the basis that without examining our network of ideas, beliefs, social and cultural judgments, and our assumptions about the world, those are transformed into constraints. Her interest is in the nature of what it means to be human. Sophie's book, The Elegance of Simplicity: A Wisdom Teacher's Epic Journey to Awareness, is a compelling, thought-provoking work of autobiographical fiction, one that communicates life-altering concepts proposing an effortless pathway to awareness. It's a deeply authentic and dramatic story of self-discovery, about what is possible when you take responsibility, own your power, and become one with life. In Sophie McLean's life and work, she strives to bring elegance, worldly experience, grit, courage, and insight leading to revelation and transformation. Sophie's Website Sophie on Instagram
