Rusha Latif is an Egyptian-American researcher and author based in the San Fransisco Bay Area. In episode 44 of Tahrir Podcast, we discussed her book, “Tahrir's Youth: Leaders of a Leaderless Revolution,” (American University in Cairo Press, 2022) which explores the role of the Revolutionary Youth Coalition (RYC) in the 2011 Egyptian revolution. Rusha challenges the prevailing narrative that the revolution was spontaneous and leaderless, offering a compelling ethnographic study that highlights the organizational strategies and leadership dynamics within the RYC. The book delves into the personal and political stories of key youth leaders, examining how their diverse backgrounds and shared commitment shaped the revolutionary movement in Tahrir Square. Through their experiences, Latif provides critical insights into the potential of horizontal leadership and participatory democracy in revolutionary organizing. Tahrir's Youth not only preserves the voices of Egypt's youth revolutionaries but also offers lessons for future movements around the world, especially in understanding the complexities of leadership and the limits of grassroots mobilization.Episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/tOBCbOXe7m0Rusha's book: https://aucpress.com/9781649030207/Streaming everywhere! https://linktr.ee/TahrirPodcastReach out! Imagine a fun night out in a trendy gay bar in San Francisco in 1974. You feel a freedom to be yourself in a place where you belong, surrounded by others who understand and support you. Then a handsome stranger approaches you and introduces himself as a cartoonist. He says he's noticed you from across the room and hands you a little portrait he made of you on a napkin. You're swooned, and you enjoy some drinks and dancing with your new friend before he finally convinces you to go somewhere more private. It's not until your body is found buried in the brush that you realize you've come to lovers lane with a serial killer. This is the case of the unsolved murders of Gerald Cavanaugh, Joseph Jae Stevens, Klaus Christmann, Frederick Capin, Harald Gullberg, Warren Andrews, and the other unnamed victims of The Doodler Killer. Listener discretion is advised. Investigators believe that the killer may still be living as an openly gay man in the San Fransisco Bay Area, never having faced justice. "I simply do it, because they say I can't”…powerful words from this week's podcast guest. In this episode of the White Tiger Podcast we have the honor to sit down with an amazing individual with an equally amazing story. Today, we introduce you to Jim Metzger. Jim is the President and Founder of High End Development, which has been a leader in the construction industry since 2006.What makes Jim's story so unique is not so much his success, but his challenge. Jim grew up as a child of a single mom in a poverty stricken community in the San Fransisco Bay Area. While struggling with self-doubt as a kid, Jim battled with drug addiction, homelessness and eventually found himself doing time in prison. Jim's path eventually came to a point where he had to make choice to either continue to be part of the problem or make the decision to be part of the solution. Jim shares an amazing story about the power of perspective and how a making a conscious choice to change his behavior, ultimately change his life. He also talks about why each of us need to have consequences in life in order for us to focus on making the right choices and avoid continually making the wrong ones. Jim also shares how he is giving back to the homeless community and why the skills and the lessons learned from the street, give them an advantage to finding significant success in life.Listen to this great conversation with Jim Metzger only on this week's episode of the White Tiger Podcast.

What does it mean to talk to our kids about race? What does it mean to engage in conversations of justice, race and privilege, in the context of diversity? How do we approach these conversations with our kids even when it's hard? What if we don't know what to say? On Episode 105, we interview Cara Meredith about talking to your kids about racism and racial justice. In This Episode, You Will Hear About: How to talk about racism with your children and teens, even if you don't know what to say The importance of diverse children's literature in your home Resources to help you and your children continue to learn and talk about racism Resources Mentioned During the Episode: Some of Cara Meredith's recommendations for diverse children's literature (including books for tweens and younger teens): God's Dream by Desmond Tutu God's Very Good Idea by Trillia Newbell The World Is Awake by Linsey Davis Listening With My Heart by Gabi Garcia A full list of Cara's recommended diverse children's literature A full list of Cara's diverse children's literature Recommended Reading List Pick up a copy of Cara Meredith's book, The Color of Life: A Journey Toward Love and Racial Justice Resources to learn more about racism (for older teens and adults) Be The Bridge: Pursuing God's Heart for Racial Reconciliation by Latasha Morrison The Color of Compromise by Jemar Tisby I'm Still Here by Austin Channing Brown Just Mercy by Byan Stevenson The study that Cara mentions about how children as young as 6 months old can distinguish someone of a different race Prophetic Lament: A Call For Justice In Troubled Times by Soong Chen-Ra Quotes and Tweets: Children are not colorblind. @caramac54 When talking to your kids about racism, start where you are at. If something is on the news, talk about it. @caramac54 I fight for racial justice because systemic racism toward back and brown lives still exists. But my marching is for a justice and a wholeness and peace that are also mine. When I allow redemption to take hold of me, I can't help but want this redemption for everyone. @caramac54 We had to learn how to hold the oppressor and honor the oppressed, for love can redeem everything, including both the oppressor and the oppressed. We had to enter the fullness of lament. @caramac54 It's a matter of mothers and fathers everywhere, of flesh and blood, of adoption and circumstance, embracing each and every one of our children. @caramac54 No longer do we ignore the suffering and pain and death of others, but with compassion as our only sword, we listen and we enter in to heartache. @caramac54 Fighting for justice isn't something we do for others, but it' something we do for ourselves. @caramac54 Subscribe and Connect With Us: Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Google Podcasts Google Play Instagram - @imbetweenshow Twitter - @imbetweenshow Facebook - @imbetweenshow Pinterest - @imbetweenshow YouTube - @imbetweenpodcast And don't forget to subscribe to our podcast, so that you will never miss an episode! _________________________________________________________________ Meet Cara Meredith: Cara Meredith is a writer and speaker whose work has appeared in numerous publications, including Christianity Today, iBelieve, and For Every Mom. This week on Iaq Radio+ we welcome John T. Hull. John has over 25 years in the roofing and coatings industries. He is a recognized authority on roof restoration and moisture detection within the roof and building envelope. Mr. Hull has provided technical support, training, and consulting in over 30 Countries. His expertise in roof restoration has contributed to roofing projects at NFL stadiums, airports, universities, hospitals, military bases and even the White house. "Introduction of the Moisture Mob" The last week of October in 2019 IAQ Radio's own Z-man and Restoration Global Watchdog attended a Technical Symposium on Moisture Detection and Measurement in Dublin, Ireland. The symposium was hosted by Tramex, Ltd the global leader and innovator of high quality precision moisture meters for the building envelope and construction materials. Cliff Zlotnik and Pete Consigli collaborated on a presentation on the History of the Water Damage Restoration and Drying Industry. Other notable industry Subject Matter Experts (SME's) who were invited to present on the technical aspects of the symposium theme were Mickey Lee and Lew Harriman. Mickey and Lew have both been interviewed multiple times over the years on IAQ Radio prior to the symposium and are well known with the show's audience. During the symposium Cliff and Pete got to meet other subject matter experts from the restoration, flooring, roofing and related fields hailing from the US, UK and the EU who were in attendance at this invitation only event. Tramex CEO Andrew Rynhart served as the Symposiarch (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/symposiarch) presiding over the proceedings and coordinating hand selected SME's to present to the global invitees and Tramex management on their area of expertise. Last November 22nd Andrew was interviewed on IAQradio followed on December 6th by one of the SME's Cliff and Pete heard present in Dublin on concrete. Robert "Bob" Higgins is a leading authority on the properties, characteristics and performance of concrete from its mix ratio, pour, curing process, use as a substrate for floor coverings, to trouble shooting moisture related problems with concrete used in buildings and structures. The Z-man's blog for Bob's podcast was tag lined "Fact or Faction"! In that spirit and in the hallmark and tradition of IAQRadio's unique style and personality, Cliff, Joe and the Restoration Global Watchdog would like to introduce the "Moisture Mob" (MM) to the industry! The Moisture Mob is an informal network of recognized subject matter experts from a variety of related disciplines who are passionate about disseminating accurate information to the industry on how moisture impacts materials and environments. The MM's purpose embraces an "esprit de corps" epitomized in their motto, "Truth and Accuracy in Moisture Measurement...or Face the Consequences!" The consequences of unchecked moisture and humidity in the built environment and building systems and materials can result in product failure, installation problems, uncomfortable living conditions for building occupants and microbial growth and mold which has deleterious effects to the structure and occupant health. In addition to Andrew Rynhart and Bob Higgins other "MM" charter members yet to be interviewed from the Dublin Symposium on IAQradio are Hardwood SME Howard Brickman from Boston, Sports Flooring SME from Atlanta, William Thornton, Flooring Inspector Extraordinaire Roland Vierra from the San Fransisco Bay Area and this week's guest John T. Hull, Roofing SME. Spring boarding off Andrew and Bob's podcasts and blogs, IAQradio will do a series of four shows over the next several weeks with the Moisture Mob. This Friday on Valentine's Day, please join Radio Joe, the Z-man and Restoration's Global Watchdog for an interview with John T. Hull, a sunshine state resident like fellow MM member Bob Higgins. Florida often characterized as "humidity central" is home base for John hailing from the Florida peninsula's gulf coast. John's Moisture Mob's theme for the show will be,"Roofs, Moisture Meters, Inspections & Solutions for Leaks: Lessons Learned from an Industry Veteran!" LEARN MORE this week on IAQ Radio+!
Copyslut released a brand new track Friday 12/6 called "The Offering". The song recreates a Broadway musical meets hard rock concert, creating a larger than life experience. It emulates the nonlinear journey of healing and transformation. I got the chance to talk with Copyslut about The Offering and new music. Copyslut is a queer band, spearheading the decriminilization of sex worker movement within the San Fransisco Bay Area. http://www.copyslutband.com This Oakland-based edgewalking foursome makes music filled with sex-magic, catharsis, and healing vibes. They bring their fans into a rich experience, letting go of shame and re-sensitizing their bodies through earnest storytelling and groovy hooks. It’s the full spectrum of entertainment: musical theater meets stripper meets rock & roll. It’s both playfully campy and intensely authentic. Founded by Chatz on vocals and Ray on guitar, the band consists of Eli Maliwan (bass) and Roxanne Medina (drums), making Copyslut a sultry foursome. Copyslut was born on a cold summer day in 2017 during San Francisco’s Pride weekend in a blaze of glitter, filled with all the sass of Freddie Mercury. What started as a love project between three close friends (Chatz, Ray, and Kendal) sparked what is now a driven musical project grounded in healing through pleasure.

Today, we talk to Lucy Kang about her documentary and what she learned during her extended research into the Community of Grace and its inhabitants. Guest: Lucy Kang is a journalist and producer at KPFA. Most recently she has come out with her radio documentary on one of Oakland's unhoused communities, entitled The Community of Grace. Welcome to Episode 6 Construction Nation! Before we get into this awesome episode with Tom Taylor, Senior Vice President at Webcor Builders, be sure to SUBSCRIBE to Construction Dream Team on iTunes or Stitcher and leave a 5-star review! This helps the podcast reach even more awesome listeners and we appreciate your support :D. The following show notes are a transcription from the audio conversation between Sue Dyer and Tom Taylor. Enjoy! Tom Taylor's career journey Tom didn't initially expect to end up in the construction industry. While pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree at Michigan State, he worked an internship at a large general contractor. At the end of the 10 weeks, he fell in love with the teamwork, sense of accomplishment, the variety of people, and has been hooked ever since. Tom started early as a superintendent and moved into project management in the Detroit area. The work he and his team did at that time focused on building schools; a rewarding experience that gave a sense of community contribution. Tom moved to California in 2005 and took a step backward from his director/PM role in Michigan to learn what it means to build in California including seismic bracing, digging 70-foot holes, and more! Tom spent 6 years on the San Fransisco general hospital project and from there moved into overseeing the northern California operations at Webcor the last 2 years. About Webcor Builders Webcor Builders has been around over 50 years, founded in the San Fransisco Bay Area. They are a self-performing GC with 750 salaried employees and over 1,000 tradespeople. Webcor employs the largest group of carpenters in California. Webcor is a superregional company able to build most things. They are part of Obayashi Corporation, a large international firm stationed in Japan that provides financial backing among other things. Webcor's biggest competitive advantage according to tom is their extraordinary people! They are proud of who they are, what they do, and focus on being a positive force in the community. Community Involvement Webcor has been involved in community rebuilding for over 35 years. A few examples of job-site level projects that gave back to the community were serving at a local soup kitchen, sponsoring students, and providing employment opportunities to veterans. Tom's Favorite Part of the Job Collaborating with people on challenges and opportunities to produce exceptional outcomes is Tom's favorite part of his job. He loves the process of brainstorming, asking questions, and getting different perspectives in order to form solutions that no one individual would have come up with on their own. Tom's Leadership Strengths Tom says his biggest strength as a leader is his ability to support people to draw out the best in them. Asking tough questions, encouraging and challenging people in a way they feel supported and comfortable so that trust can be established. The acronym S.A.M. stands for setting direction, aligning resources, and motivating/inspiring. Motivation is important along with feedback; showing the person they are appreciated and that they add value. Monthly Construction Scorecard 5 projects Tom has worked with at SFO have used the Construction Scorecard aligned with the process of Structured Collaborative Partnering. The correlation between the scorecard's ability to predict how a project is going to perform has been astonishing. The Construction Scorecard has worked effectively with 5 completely different projects with different stakeholders, variables, and teams. How does the Construction Scorecard work? It provides the opportunity on a monthly basis for a large portion of the team and stakeholders to score how the project is going and provide feedback on critical issues. It identifies key challenges and opportunities on a regular basis and is transparent. It holds people accountable and offers the space for safe and honest input. It is meritocratic and values the best ideas across the team and stakeholders. Lessons learned using the scorecard One project at SFO was not doing well in terms of the budget and schedule which was reflected on the scorecard. When Tom and his team embraced the feedback from the scorecard, they were able to collectively make changes that have up to this point produced positive results and gotten the project back on track. How Accountability Positively Affects a Team Accountability empowers employees. It emboldens them and gives them a sense that their voice is heard. Accountability embraces the key components of building trust such as talking directly, transparency, delivering on results, and keeping commitments. People's energy shifts from challenging, questioning, and doubting others to support: how they can help the other person be successful. It has resulted in a profound shift where people place their time and effort. What kind of Projects can benefit from the Construction Scorecard? Any project can benefit! Some less complex projects may require less executive engagement, timing, and depth, but it is always helpful to start off with a rigorous and detailed process to make sure you're assessing how the team is performing early-on. If a project starts off well with a plan and trust, it generally will go well throughout. You can scale back the Scorecard as the project proceeds, but it is a good investment of time throughout! The worst challenge Tom has faced in his career. Tom's worst challenge occurred more than 20 years ago. They were building a new high school at an incredibly fast pace in Michigan with a 16-month timeframe for a 400,000 sq ft. school. Three weeks before the school was opened (the schedule could not be shifted), an elevator tech fell two stories from a ladder and was permanently disabled. Tom remembers being in the elevator with the EMT helping this gentleman out. It was a dark moment in Tom's career that he has not forgotten. Tom relates this experience back to the usefulness of a scorecard and how had the team dynamics been a bit different, perhaps this event could have turned out more fortunately. Best advice ever received Tom's best advice ever received comes from his dad which is that you must ALWAYS have a positive attitude. As a leader, you must be able to walk into every day no matter how bleak things are and see a positive path forward. You must set the vision, explain to people where you're going, and create enthusiasm as to how you're going to get there -- all of which requires a positive attitude. Yes, it is I...Tyson Saner. Very grateful that you are joining me, brand new host of this program and pale imitation of former host Marc Hershon. It is a great honor to be entrusted with the keys to the Succotash SoundCast Soundkingdom and I look forward to carrying on the tradition that has been listening to and sampling Comedy (and otherwise) Soundcasts for your own personal variety show, between your ears, in the theater of your mind... Today I have for you what can best be described as an average amount of soundcast clips. Six seems to be the magic number but it's certainly not set in stone as long-time listeners of this program can attest to. Soundcasts to look forward to hearing clips from include Fascination Street, Logical Nonsense, Your Mom's House, The Stanley and Branley Show, The Los Angeles Breakfast Club: On The Air, and the High Content Podcast. We also have a double dose of comedian and raging moderate Will Durst's famed "Burst O' Durst" segments. I am grateful that Mr. Durst has agreed to continue supplying us with his unique take on the politics of our times. You'll be hearing those later in the program. And if you're in or near the San Fransisco Bay Area you will find, on the aformentioned website, dates, locations, and tickets for Durst's latest one-man show: Durst Case Scenario: Mid Term Madness. And, as always, Succotash is sponsored by Henderson's Pants. As the associate producer of this show, when I was finding clips for this program and sending them off to Mr. Hershon I NOW realize that a few of my contributions over the years may have stretched the definition of "Comedy" a bit. Sometimes my decision to submit a clip was made by it being interesting or different or having a particular quality about them that I felt made them worthy of inclusion on Succotash. (I always had backup ideas for clips to submit in case my submissions couldn't be used for whatever reason but to Mr. Hershon's great credit, my submissions were rarely, if ever, unused.) Now I am completely aware that something "having a particular quality about them" is nebulous at best and nothing if not 100% a subjective viewpoint. Whether or not something is "interesting" or "different" is also, pretty much 100% subjective. This, of course applies to comedy. Maybe not 100% with comedy but very probably. Anyway, just something to bear in mind as we explore the highways and byways of Soundcastland together. THE CLIPS Fascination StreetIt debuted on iTunes on July 3rd, 2017 and it is Hosted By Steve Owens of San Antonio, Texas. Last year, in 2017, Mr. Owens had the good fortune to spend a great deal of time with actor and Hollywood Legend, Clint Howard. There is a two-part episode of Fascination Street that is with Mr. Howard. The clip you are about to hear is from an interview that Mr. Owens had with Clint's father, another Hollywood legend, the Late Patriarch of the Howard family of actors and entertainers, Rance Howard. According to Mr. Owens, this is the last interview Mr. Rance Howard ever gave. Logical NonsenseHere's a soundcast from Ontario, Canada whose 1st episode is listed on iTunes as having been posted in October of 2017. The description of the show on Soundcloud and iTunes is: "Jab & Breezy take an explicit & comedic look into popular pop culture topics that make no sense to them. Every Tuesday without shame they will share their experiences and opinions while dissecting the nonsense and sharing new mind blowing facts and history that will leave you cry laughing. Follow us to join in our weekly challenges, where J & B compete against each other in a unique contest of wits or might." Your Mom's HouseHosts Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitsky podcast is part of the "All Things Comedy" network which, according to Wikipedia, "is a digital media co-operative and content creation studio and home to a community of professional comedians. It is the brainchild of comedians Al Madrigal and Bill Burr, founded in October 2012." I previously grabbed a clip of their episode "403" back for Succotash Epi 156 "Boozin' With Bill is Back" from July 29th, 2017 Sometimes they have guest for their program - which is often streamed LIVE on YouTube - this Clip is from episode 435 in which they do not have a guest… The Stanley and Branley ShowSometimes a soundcast will have very little biographical information attatched to their pages. The Stanley and Branley Show is one of those soundcasts. The description for the show on both their Soundcloud and iTunes page reads as follows: "Welcome to the worst call-in show you never heard." So far they have 60 episodes with several mini or bonus episodes and they've been posting on iTunes since May of 2016. This clip is from episode 60, published February 13th 2018, and in it Stanley and Branley listen to dating advice from a YouTube video. If you want to hear more of these mysterious Soundcasters you can go to the aformentioned Soundcloud or iTunes. The Los Angeles Breakfast Club: On The AirIf you pay a visit to the Los Angeles Breakfast Club homesite, you will see the cheerful sentiment "Making Los Angeles a better place since 1925". In case you have never heard of the Los Angeles Breakfast Club - or the LABC for short - you can also read the description of the club there OR listen to this epi of Succotash, during which I will read it to you. On February 28th, 2017 the Los Angeles Breakfast Club : On The Air soundcast debuted. As described by host Phil Leirness in this same episode, "for many decades, The Los Angeles Breakfast Club was a fixture on the Radio" and on the soundcast Mr. Leirness called it a "return of sorts to the days of yesteryear..." The show features interviews, newsreel clips, a selection of musical interludes from throughout the near-century the LABC has been operating and various speakers who share their experiences and generally have a good time. Succotash's very own former-host-turned-executive producer, Marc Hershon, began announcing duties for this program in its 6th episode, published July 1st, 2017. High Content Podcast I became aware of this show as I was looking for soundcast-related gigs on Craigslist. I happened across an ad from someone looking to start a soundcast who was seeking a co-host. That someone was High Content Podcast's host, Iraj Lopez, who dropped his first episode on Soundcloud back in June of 2017. Since then he has released episodes consistently, occasionally with co-host Joe Buratti, guests such as Ariel Robinson and comedians local to Humboldt County where this soundcast is based, including Joshua Barnes, Jessica Grant, and Matt Redbeard. Also featured in the episode with Matt Redbeard was Chris Durant, the co-creator of Savage Henry Magazine - a well-known humor publication in Humboldt County that sponsors many comedy events throughout the year including a comedy festival every Labor Day weekend that had its sixth iteration in September of 2017. The show's topics range from pop culture, politics, science, nature and what is both frightening and exiting about humanity. When there isn't a co-host or guest the show features host Iraj Lopez brainstorming ways to improve the world and various "what-if" scenarios. Our clip is from Episode 27, entitled "I want to boil a gallon of cum," posted on Feb 18th, 2018. Well, that about does it. It's been a sort-of-but-not-really maiden voyage. I'd like to thank Kenny Durgess, Will Durst, Joe Paulino, Scott Carvey, Bill Heywatt, Henderson's Pants and of course our Executive Producer Marc Hershon for their support and contributions to this episode and EVERY episode of Succotash that came before I had even heard of the program back when Mr. Hershon started posting episodes in March of 2011. I hope you will continue this journey of discovery with me and I look forward to continuing to bring you this "Whitman's Sampler" of soundcasts from all around the world where they record in English. For everyone here I bid you farewell and gently remind you to please, Pass the Succotash... — Tyson Saner
