For the final week of "Nick's Picks", we're diving into the 2024 wrestling meets horror mash up Dark Match! Dark Match is a 2024 Canadian slasher film written and directed by Lowell Dean, starring Ayisha Issa, Steven Ogg, Sara Canning, and Chris Jericho. The film is about a small wrestling company that takes a gig in a town where things are not what they seem.

“If the Ghostbusters and the Scooby-Doo gang got stoned together in Stanley Park and Frankensteined a high-larious single-camera sitcom, it would probably look something like Paranormal Solutions Inc.” That's how our valiant host Sabrina Rani Furminger opened an article she wrote in 2016 for the Westender newspaper about the first season of Paranormal Solutions Inc., a fabulous series from the funniest people in Vancouver. Eight years later – and nearly 10 years after visiting their set in Gastown where they filmed much of season one – the Paranormal Solutions Inc. gang is back, with season two. This time around, the PSI gang is even funnier, more of a collective hot mess, and getting themselves into even zanier and grosser paranormal situations than in season one, even serving up a delightful smorgasbord of homages to some of our favourite horror properties, from The Blair Witch Project to Halloween to The Shining to Cujo – and, for some reason, there's also a lot of kale. The new Canadian film, INFLUENCER, now on Shudder, shows such a scenario but now in a horror film.Madison (Emily Tennant), a travel vlogger, model, and advertiser is in Thailand. Her personal life is a wreck, and she doesn't much seem into her now fulltime job promoting herself, her sponsors, and the vacation spots she journeys to. When she unexpectingly is forced to extend her trip, she meets another young woman, CW (Cassandra Naud), that will show her around. Soon something unexpected happens that may endanger her life.The film is directed by Kurtis David Hardner and co-written by him and Tesh Guttikonda. Besides Emily Tennant and Cassandra Naud, Sara Canning and Rory J. Saper star as well. Receiving fairly good reviews, the movie focuses on some modern themes like the internet and the small world we live in. Your co-hosts take a look at this interesting film and give their thoughts.

On April 18th, 2019, journalist Lyra McKee was shot dead during rioting in the Creggan area of Derry. On this episode about what happened next, Lyra’s partner, Sara Canning, talks about the night Lyra was murdered and how her death impacted her, her community, and Derry itself. There has, though, been some progress on things Lyra felt passionate about – same sex marriage is likely to be made legal and abortion laws liberalised. It's been a month since Lyra McKee was killed in Londonderry. She was 29 and was already making waves in journalism as well as being an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. The night she was shot she had been watching rioting in Creggan, a housing estate on the outskirts of the city. The New IRA said its members carried out the murder. At her funeral politicians were urged to find solutions to Northern Ireland's problems and Lyra's partner, Sara Canning, addressed them personally, seizing the opportunity to speak to them candidly. From the very start, she faced the TV cameras to pay her own tributes to her girlfriend. This weekend she's been speaking at an equal marriage rally in Belfast. The children’s show that aired from 1968 to 1970, and into syndication after that is going to get a horror retake. Reports are that Warner Brothers and Syfy are teaming up to bring the Splits gang back as a film is about “a boy named Harley” who is celebrating his birthday by attending a Banana Splits TV show taping with his family. Things then “take an unexpected turn, and the body count quickly rises.” Release details are still coming, though Dani Kind, Steve Lund, and Sara Canning will be joining the cast. They are now striving, as a start, to add 30 original movies a year to their lineup including 8 horror movies from Blumhouse this year that will not show in theaters, only exclusively on Amazon. Blumhouse is the company that has brought us tons of great films such as Split, the most recent Halloween, Happy Death Day, and Get Out.
