Episode Overview:In this episode of The Catholic Man Show, hosts Adam Minihan and David Niles dive into a lighthearted yet profound discussion about the phrase "killing two birds with one stone," the joys and challenges of high school reunions, and a deep exploration of friendship—both human and divine. The episode centers on John 15:14-15, where Jesus calls His disciples friends, not servants, offering a transformative perspective on what it means to live in communion with Christ. A powerful confession experience ties the conversation together, emphasizing the shift from doing things for God to doing them with Him.Key Discussion Points:Opening Banter (00:00:16 - 00:04:55): Adam and David humorously debate the origins and modern misuse of the phrase "killing two birds with one stone," referencing historical and biblical imagery like David and Goliath, and even a viral video of Nolan Ryan hitting a bird with a baseball.Life Updates (00:05:00 - 00:11:39): David shares his excitement for an upcoming family reunion in Wyoming, while Adam talks about his son Leo's second-place finish in mutton busting at a local rodeo and his anticipation for a 20-year high school reunion, sparking a funny reflection on aging and pride.Sponsorship Spotlight (00:12:00 - 00:13:15): The hosts highlight their long-time sponsor, Select International Tours, encouraging listeners to explore pilgrimage opportunities at selectinternationaltours.com and join their upcoming trip to Italy in October. What We're Drinking (00:13:29 - 00:15:47): Adam and David enjoy The Sassenach, a blended Scotch whiskey with a Gaelic name meaning "outsider" or "stranger." They praise its Highland-like flavor and art deco bottle, likening it to a Mad Men-style decanter.Literature and Reading (00:16:46 - 00:20:43): David discusses reading G.K. Chesterton's Man Alive, recommended by Monsignor Gallus, a Chesterton scholar, and touches on Plato's The Republic. The hosts reflect on Chesterton's whimsical style and the influence of classical works on Christian thought.Main Topic: Friendship with Christ (00:22:08 - 00:58:51):Biblical Foundation: Adam introduces John 15:14-15, where Jesus says, “You are my friends if you keep what I command you. No longer do I call you servants… but I have called you friends.” This passage sets the stage for a discussion on authentic friendship.Philosophical Insights: Drawing from Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics (Books 8-10), the hosts explore his three types of friendship—pleasure, utility, and authentic (virtuous) friendship. Aristotle views authentic friendship as the highest moral achievement, impossible without virtue, as vice renders true friendship unattainable.Christian Perspective: The discussion connects Aristotle's ideas to Christian theology, with references to Augustine, Aquinas, and Cicero. Aquinas describes charity as the highest form of friendship, requiring mutual love, willing the good of the other, and a shared life—mirrored in Christ's relationship with His disciples.Old vs. New Covenant: The hosts contrast the Old Covenant's servanthood (e.g., Abraham obeying without full understanding) with the New Covenant's friendship, where Christ shares divine knowledge, inviting us into intimacy and communion.Confession Insight: Adam shares a transformative moment from confession, where a priest challenged his mentality of doing things for God, urging him to focus on doing things with God. This shift reframes Christian life as a...

Greetings my friends. Spring has sprung in Atlanta. Everything is covered in the yellowish glow of pollen. Fortunately, I've doubled up on allergy meds this year. It seems to have helped. The Friel Sisters were the focus. Here in Ames, Iowa it happens that we have a Friel Drive. It isn't as lovely as the Friel Sister's voices and the instrumentation which accompanies them. You asked for a picture of what we are doing while listening. Mine is attached." Mike Sigler emailed a couple photos: “Hi Mark, Mike Sigler here. I've been listening to your podcast regularly for a while now and have been meaning to write for almost as long. So what have I been up to: I've been running sound for a little Celtic music dinner concert series at The Old Brogue Falls Church Virginia, one of the several Irish pubs in the Washington DC area. The series runs in the Fall and the Spring and consists of two dinner seatings and a wonderful performance of Celtic music. I've been running sound for them for about two years (a new skill for me) and have been having a blast. I've attached pictures of the groups from the last two concerts, one by Jug of Punch (Pat Egan (Guitar), Sharon Knowles (Harp), Tabby Finchan (Key Board), John Knowles (Fiddle)) and the other by Charlie Zahm and Tadd Marks. We've got three more concerts coming up this fall and I'm very much looking forward to them. Thanks for all you do – your show keeps reminding me to play and engage where I can (even if I seem to always find out about the local festivals only after they are over!). Best," Jeremiah Donier emailed an image: "Marc, I love your podcast and music. After visiting your merch website today and getting a free CD, I think you can use more designs. Attached is something I created based on the "Some Like it Scot" photo by Rich Johnson, https://www.pinterest.com/pin/176766354114786077/. I reached out to the photographer for his permission to design this and was given the okay. So, I wanted to create something fun and uplifting for the New Year with the saying "Up with Kilts! Down with Pants." I can add your logo too and whatever else you want to see (except for what's under the kilt of course - he he!). I can provide a vector file so it can be printed and scaled to whatever size is needed for the podcast's merchandise. This is free because I don't have much money to contribute, you give so much joy to the podcast listeners, and it is my small way of saying thanks for being so wonderful. Let me know what you think. Patrick Rieger emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, I feel like I have been slacking this summer sending you pictures after having sent so many. Celtic Pittsburgh hasn't been doing much the past few months though we do have plans in the works for an event in October. Meanwhile, the renaissance festival season for my family and I started when we attended the Great Lakes Medieval faire the weekend of July 27 and 28. It was a great weekend, and we needed time away from the daily routine. With life so busy for everyone we hardly see friends anymore, and this was a chance to see many of them. We were happy to find that our friend Captain John Stout, aka Richard Brentar, has returned to Great Lakes after having been absent for a few years. I'm not sure what I enjoy more, his music or his stories, he always has lots of great stories to tell. We also saw the Jackdaws, Celtic Mayhem, and Michael Manderen. Sadly we didn't make the shows of Menagerie Music this year but we did manage to catch up with Lisa from that duo. My family and I plus a couple of friends went to see John McCann and Hamish at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle in Pittsburgh on August 3. These two are a lot of fun and have great energy, and get the place jumping. I have seen them for 15 years, starting when they were part of the Corned Beef & Curry Band. Sadly that band broke up when one of the three decided to explore other musical paths. I'll be sending more pictures of Celtic musicians come September after trips to two more ren faires. Until then, slainte!" Cheryl Arvio emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, Sorry these photos aren't better, but this is Socks in the Frying Pan from Friday night's show at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago. Brilliant, as they always are! Bummed that they are not playing Milwaukee Irish Fest this year, but happy we got to see them (and pick up their new CD) in our hometown. Best,"

It's totally worth a re - listen; she is so funny. Also wow, yep, that episode was almost two years ago. Time flies!" Patrick Rieger sent Some More Irish Pictures: "Hello Marc, A few more photos to share. First up, a few of Terry Griffith, the last few times he was on a stage with an in - person audience at Mullaney's Harp and Fiddle. One is from the 2020 fundraiser for the Pittsburgh Saint Patrick's Day Parade on February 13, 2020, and another is from his gig on February 28, 2020. Within a few weeks, the words Covid and Coronavirus quickly became part of our daily vocabulary, and the shows came to an end for a couple of years. On June 4, 2022, we had a retirement party for Terry. The best part of the night is when he strapped on a guitar and led the packed pub in A Health to the Company. There were tears and cheers for him throughout the evening, but most came during that special song. The last photo is from tonight, January 27, 2024. John McCann on acoustic guitar and Hamish on percussion packed the Harp & Fiddle. Lots of great music and an interactive audience.”

I have always liked Celtic music and anything to do with Scotland or Ireland. It wasn't until I took a DNA test that I figured out why. I always thought I was mostly German because of my name and where it originates. Turns out I got mostly my moms side and they are all UK based. Ireland, Scotland and Yorkshire. So now I even enjoy it more knowing that it is my history." Aimee Greenfield sent a picture: "Hi Mark, I love to weave and listen to Celtic music. This music has inspired me for the last 30 years while creating! The music is definitely woven into my current project of Turkish Beach Towels. Thanks for the entertainment!"

Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743. Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. But we are not experts in any field — literature, race relations, politics, etc .— and we know that our reviews of these books come from a place of privilege. We encourage our community of readers to add to these conversations with their own thoughts, critiques, and questions. We want to open up a safe place for people. That being said, we also realize that getting into race, sexuality, gender, and other difficult topics can be triggering. We aim to include content warnings whenever they are applicable but we are not perfect. So as we continue to do our best, know you have the room to tell us when we can do better and even, if you want to, share resources with us. Let's learn, grow, and have fun together.

Hey Obsassenachs! This week on The Sassenach files, I'm breaking down 606: “The World Turned Upside Down”. Come join me as I chat about the creative writing and cinematography choices that make this episode great along with why I felt this episode really needed to be split in two. I also talk about the fine line between dreams and reality in this ep, Brianna's slow and steady growth as a character, Jamie's choice to reveal his encounter with Mary McNab, and a quick game of connect the dots for all the little bread crumbs that have been dropped throughout the season.
Dallas returns to share about her trip to Scotland.

Plus, we take a deep dive into the mind of Frank Randall, Pan says some not-nice things about Hal, and JeSuisPrest recites a sonnet to Sam Heughan's impressive range of heart eyes.

In this special, we talk all about what book lovers want in their stockings this holiday season! From cozy throw blankets to reading accessories we can't live without we have you and the book lover in your life's favorite things. Listen below and scroll down to click and look and shop. First and foremost if the avid reader in your life doesn't have a Kindle Unlimited Membership Plans you will be their HERO for this gift. Kindle Unlimited is a service that allows you to read as much as you want, choosing from over 2 million titles, thousands of audiobooks, and up to three select magazine subscriptions. Explore new authors, books, and genres from mysteries and romance to sci-fi and more. You can read on any device. That means your smartphone, tablet, or computer. There is so much great content and you simply can't beat the price. If they do have it you can renew their subscription for several months or a year. Again, Hero. Second and second-most (don't look at me what comes after foremost?) is getting your very own What The Smut Merch! You know you want it. Now on to household gifts Lisa wants the reader in your life (or you) to be cozy with a gorgeous sherpa fleece book blanket by Storiarts. These blankets are beautiful and you can read them! Lots of great classics to snuggle up underneath. Kandy picked this adorable cat bookshelf fleece blanket because she was cold and had to share her blanket with her cats' Radar and Echo. Hey, it's not always about you... But if you know a crazy cat lady that reads until her eyeballs pop out this is the gift for her... or him. Karen picked this "Bookmarks are for quitters" mug for Lisa and suggested how to make it into a little gift set with some tea or coffee included. Kandy suggested this Love Your Shelf Insulated Cup from Cardigan Librarian for those Romance readers that don't drink hot coffee. It's perfect for iced coffee, water, or any morning beverage. Of course, you know we are gonna remind you about how much we LOVE FrostBeard Studio Candles, right? The Trashy Romance Novel Candle has been rebranded to the steamy romance novel which was Karens' pick and Lisa chose Old Books. Kandy didn't want to be left out so she picked Sassenach. You've read her first smut story, right? Our collective favorite is bearshifter. We may have spent too much time on their website. Our third and final blanket is from lithographs.com. These awesome blankets have hidden words in the pictures and offer a huge variety that creates perfect gifts for nearly anyone on your list. Then some wonderful reading accessories Kandy's number one pick is the Gooseneck Tablet Holder she recently picked up from Amazon. It's great for reading in bed or on the couch and would make a terrific gift for anyone that you would like to ignore you and read more. Lisa loves this adorable Octopus Page Holder. Kandy thinks it's perfect for tentacle porn! Leave it to Karen to suggest an accessory that can double as a sex toy. This Personalized Leather Bookmark by Malina Leather Crafts can double as a spanker in a pinch! Another item Kandy loves (and already owns) is these book darts that are gorgeous and classy ways to mark your place. She loves them for marking non-fiction pages to reference later. We all agree if you have a bathtub you NEED a Bathtub Tray. Kandy picked this great one with Wine Holder and Book Holder from Henrys Daughter Decor. Here are the personal gifts for readers. Karen fell in love with this adorable book wallet she saw on TikTok and then found it from Well Read Company. It's beautiful and has a zipper closure to keep everything where it belongs. There are also loads of designs so you are sure to find just the right one. Lisa was ticked that she couldn't get this cute T-shirt by Ann Arbor T-shirt Co that says "My weekend is fully booked" because of the sizes. It goes up to a 2XL so grab one for your reader (or yourself). Karen picked another cute T-Shirt from CustomixDesign "I Have No Shelf Control" It comes in a wide range of colors and sizes and is adorable! Lisa suggested this Kate Spade Canvas Tote with a stack of books and an interior pocket. Stuff their stocking with these awesome stockings! Lisa found these so many books so little time socks on amazon and they are killer! Lisa picked these adorable book-themed pouches from Storiarts. They are just the right size for carrying our skull collection. Books! Some fun book gifts. Karen digs this scratch-off reading recommendation poster by Book Bundles by Viv. Great for folks who want more variety in their reading choices. Kandy picked this recycled readers book subscription for only $11 a month. You can choose a genre and get selections monthly. Lisa suggested this personalized book to make for the person you love. Why I love you from Love Book is your very own illustrated own story.
