The Bible is most aware of the problem of anxiety vortexes. But whereas too many believers today get sucked into those vortices the Bible counsels sober-mindedness. In this episode we unpack just what is sober-mindedness and offer some steps for how to achieve emotional sobriety. If you've ever watched professional golf you'll have realized that the pros intentionally seek to remain calm, sober-minded. Why is that? In the NFL Patrick Mahomes is a superb example of sober-mindedness, if not also athletic excellence. Let's examine some biblical cues so we can move toward emotional health. In the episode's cultural reflection I unpack further how unprecedented are the Trump administration's efforts to assess and trim the Federal bureaucracy. America's founders, when they established the grounds for our nation, never foresaw the explosive and unconstrained growth of what has become the fourth branch of government: the bureaucracy. Come laugh and think with me.
If youre still telling yourself this lie LISTEN UP.....because i told myself it too.
[1 Peter 4:7] End of all things is near, THEREFORE... In this second sermon focusing on this passage, we narrow in on the first statement about being of sound judgement and sober - having a focused mind with control and clarity in all areas of life for the purpose of prayer. Sobreity in Paul's letters and the teaching of Jesus has a goal: alertness, prayer, and resistance to sin as the end draws near.
What if huge transformations in your life only take small changes done every day? This is exactly what Michelle Smith did when she first got sober in order to prevent herself from turning to a drink.Michelle was dealing with grief from the loss of her mom, her husband was deployed to war and she was suffering from postpartum depression. She struggled with shame and guilt and used alcohol to quiet the noise. Her parents died way sooner than they should have and she recognized that she was an adult orphan. Michelle realized that she was putting her children in the same position she was in. And she decided drinking was a nonnegotiable.Michelle shared her experience of waking up after early sobriety and rediscovering her feelings and what she will do with those feelings. She discovered her true joy.Michelle and I talked about basic habits that we started layering in this phase of long-term recovery. She shared how she started with drinking water, then walking, and listening to amazing podcasts. All of this went against her the old version of her life and drinking wasn't fitting in the way that it did before.Michelle's perspective on life in long-term sobriety is so refreshing and real. She is a no-nonsense, strong and confident woman. She refuses to over-commit. She has healthy boundaries today to protect her own mental health. Michelle shared a practical tool she uses to help remind her of these things every day.Michelle Smith is a bestselling author, keynote speaker, and the founder of Recovery is the New Black, a digital community for women living or exploring an alcohol-free life. Since getting sober in 2016, she has integrated both her personal and professional experience toward normalizing sobriety in our boozy culture.www.recoveryisthenewblack.com Instagram & Facebook: recoveryisthenewblack Support the showSupport the showOh, and by the way, if you didn't know, my program Sober Freedom Transformation is now open! How do you balance your life between work and self-care?Kristi Coulter is a woman in long-term sobriety and a former high-level executive at Amazon. She justified her drinking because she didn't look like those other people who were problem drinkers, and she was successful. Sobriety gave her a story but also the stamina to do difficult things. Kristi was a high achiever as a young person and then quickly continued that in her career. At Amazon there was so much to do and the jobs were so hard it was impossible to be an overachiever. This became a perfect storm for someone who needs to overachieve. After her first year of sobriety we start to ask ourselves what do I want. Kristi also shared that she had to learn how to be nice to herself and her creativity started coming back. With time she learned to set healthy boundaries which was huge in her growth. This helped her balance her work life and her personal life and learn to respect herself in long term recovery. We discussed the power of sustainable change, slowly doing things consistently over time to make HUGE transformations. Kristi Coulter is the author of the memoirs EXIT INTERVIEW and NOTHING GOOD CAN COME FROM THIS. She also works as a freelance editor and writing teacher. Compassion is the #1 way we can really change the way we look at alcohol. How often do we try and use shame, guilt, or blame as a means of holding ourselves accountable? And how often does it fail to be enough? If you haven't heard of the book This Naked Mind, it was absolutely transformative in Karolina's life, and today she is joined by their head coach, Scott Pinyard. Scott opens up about his backstory, finding freedom from alcohol using the book This Naked Mind, and how he ultimately came to work at This Naked Mind Institute. This is actually the same place where Karolina attained her own alcohol-free coaching certification, and she and Scott look at what's so unique and powerful about their approach. Scott also dives deep into this idea of compassion first, and why shame, guilt, blame, and willpower can only get a person so far. This Naked Mind leads not only from scientific research, but experience and that compassion is the number one way to really change beliefs around alcohol. Discover the power of a compassionate stance, the importance of emotion-based goals, and freedom to create your own alcohol-free journey!
