In this episode of History 102, Rudyard Lynch and Erik Torenberg are joined by Bismarck Analysis's Samo Burja (podcast host: Live Players) to uncover the hidden threads connecting ancient Babylon to Silicon Valley. Did you know that 2,500 years ago, people complained about information overload just like we do today? Or that some civilizations saw 70% of their population enslaved? Rudyard and Samo peel back the layers of history, revealing: The shocking similarities between ancient Athens and the Taliban Why California might be birthing new religions as we speak How deforestation toppled empires (and why it matters now) From psychedelic Greek philosophers to the eerie parallels between Polish-Lithuanian and Cambodian history, this episode is a mind-bending tour of humanity's greatest triumphs and strangest quirks.

Welcome to the season five premiere of Post-Growth Australia Podcast. What better way to launch our new season than with Rob Dietz, co-host of Crazy Town Podcast, (https://www.resilience.org/crazy-town-podcast/) perhaps the standard bearer of degrowth themed podcasts. (Rob Dietz). Rob is the Programs Director of Post Carbon Institute (https://www.postcarbon.org/) (PCI). A brilliant public speaker and story teller, Rob talks us through the journey of Crazy Town Podcast, which he co-hosts with colleagues Asher Miller (https://www.postcarbon.org/our-people/asher-miller/)and Jason Bradford (https://www.postcarbon.org/our-people/jason-bradford/). He also discusses the other initiatives and campaigns run by PCI, in addition to his unique vision of a Post-Growth future. (Crazy Town's Logo). We asked Rob to share two of his favourite Crazy Town Podcast Episodes that are linked below. We do warn you, that once you start listening to Crazy Town, you might not be able to stop! Episode 34. Fear of Death and Climate Denial, or… the Story of Wolverine and the Screaming Mole of Doom (https://www.resilience.org/stories/2021-03-25/fear-of-death-and-climate-denial-or-the-story-of-wolverine-and-the-screaming-mole-of-doom-episode-34-of-crazy-town/) Episode 60. Chillin' and Killin': How Air Conditioning Has Altered Human Behavior and the Environment (https://www.resilience.org/stories/2022-06-16/chillin-and-killin-how-air-conditioning-has-altered-human-behavior-and-the-environment-episode-60-of-crazy-town/) Rob would also like us to share PCI's report: “Welcome to the Great Unraveling: Navigating the Polycrisis of Environmental and Social Breakdown (https://www.postcarbon.org/publications/welcome-to-the-great-unraveling/).” It is quality reading and we are pleased that it is making ripples. The song of choice for this episode is ‘Safe Room (https://shockoctopus.bandcamp.com/track/safe-room)' from host Michael Bayliss' band ‘Shock Octopus (https://shockoctopus.bandcamp.com/album/a-decade-into-darkness).' First released in 2011, its apocalyptic tale – of a world that has become so impacted that even the billionaires who created the mess in the first place have no safe place to hide – is becoming all the more prophetic a decade later. Michael and co-host Mark have had our music recently played on the Freedom of Species radio show, here (https://www.3cr.org.au/freedomofspecies/episode/how-can-we-be-effective-advocates-bees) and here (https://www.3cr.org.au/freedomofspecies/episode/orca-revolution-why-are-orcas-attacking-boats-iberian-peninsula) respectively. (The iconic cover of the 'Safe Room' single). We are also excited by the fact that Rob presented at an online Degrowth conference run by New Economy Network Australia (NENA). PGAP has interviewed NENA's convenor Michelle Maloney twice. The video of Rob's talk can be watched here. (https://www.neweconomy.org.au/event/crazy-town-mid-week-sanity-preserving-degrowth-hilarity/#more-9711) Your co-hosts Michael Bayliss and Mark Allen are pleased to be back for season five of Post-Growth Australia Podcast. We hope you like the cosmetic changes of this episode (graphics courtesy of Squeaky Pea Designs with photos from Photographica). We are looking forward to another season of quality guests and topics. This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero's work, On Duties (De Officiis), which presents a largely Stoic view on ethics, virtues, relationships, and duties or moral obligations Specifically it examines his short discussion about how faction or partisan divisions arise within a society. Generally, this takes place because those involved in government give priority to their own individual good or the good of a part of the community, over the common good. Cicero also discusses "electioneering" - a common practice in the century leading up to the fall of the Roman Republic - and how it can be problematic. He sets out rules for how a person ought to engage their political rivals and opponents - treating them as common members of their shared society, rather than as enemies. We at The Report Card are on summer break this week, so we are re-upping one of our favorite episodes from the past year: Bleakness in American Schooling with Robert Pondiscio. Over the past few years, American schooling has been on a bumpy road. COVID-19 is the most obvious issue here, but it's not only that. As https://www.aei.org/profile/robert-pondiscio/ (Robert Pondiscio) argued in the March edition of https://www.commentary.org/articles/robert-pondiscio/american-schooling-bleak-broken/ (Commentary), American schools have become overcome by bleakness. "We want children to grapple with 'honest history' starting in elementary school and to discover the power of their voices by writing authentic essays about their personal problems. Small wonder, then, that children are more depressed and medicated than ever before. A half-century of psychological research indicates that our beliefs about the world shape behavior and our sense of well-being. Whether one views the world as good or bad, safe or dangerous, enticing or dull, is correlated with outcomes such as life satisfaction or depression. We may think that we are doing children a good service by being 'real' with them, refusing to spare them from the unpleasant facts of the tired world they will soon inherit, thus inspiring them to seize the day and set the world right. But strong evidence is emerging that we are mostly succeeding in creating a generation of overwhelmed young people paralyzed into learned helplessness." In this episode, Nat and Robert discuss this bleakness—its sources, its effects, and how we might overcome it. Is free speech something we should be challenging? Where does it stop? What will we lose? How do we manage this important issue, especially in times of a global pandemic, as well as the other crisis' humanity faces, including the climate emergency? When does someone go too far? Levin notices a strange cultural trend. Although things may look great from a mere statistical perspective, something more ominous is going on in the background. Levin writes: “This mix of seemingly good and bad news is no paradox. The good news is often just one consequence of the bad. There are fewer divorces because there are fewer marriages. … There are fewer abortions because there are fewer pregnancies. … There are fewer out-of-wedlock births because there are fewer births in general. … Fewer teenagers are dying in car accidents because fewer teenagers are getting driver's licenses. There is less social disorder, we might say, because there is less social life. We are doing less of everything together, so that what we do is a little more tidy and controlled.” Subscribe to our podcasts About Yuval Levin "The Changing Face of Social Breakdown" by Yuval Levin Report | The Divided State of Our Unions See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We're back to the deep and dark web! This week we're looking at the positive (and innocuous) aspects of the dark web. While it may be a place for illicit trade, the dark web is also a space for free speech and anonymity, and people are taking advantage of this by creating anonymous social networking sites and speaking out (and whistleblowing) on important issues. Tune in to hear us discuss the power and moral implications of being able to be anonymous online!   Head to our website (www.thesocialbreakdown.com) to find the sources we cited in the episode and help us do a short survey. Click the "Survey for Swag" tab, fill it out (it's short!), and we'll send you a Social Breakdown sticker in the mail. Thanks!

The Social Breakdown team is at it again! This time we're talking about the myths of the model minority. It's important to break down this myth, because we live in a world of identity politics where we fight over who gets to speak for whom and how we represent ourselves within institutions. Who is the model minority, and how did this term come to be? What social pressures defy or reproduce stereotypes? And what problems does this myth create for other people of color? Join us in our conversation on the model minority and the taken-for-granted notions of this myth. We have our eyes on you, Silicon Valley!
